Traveling for work and stopped in for an iced coffee before hitting the highway. I knew I wasn't walking into a specialty coffee shop or even a Starbucks/DD but they had their coffee menu proudly displayed. I ordered an iced mocha latte, a pretty straightforward drink. Watching this process was prob the most painful 20 minutes of my life. The counter person who took my order/made my coffee took about 3 minutes on each step. Ice in the cup - 3 minutes. Coffee grounds in the machine - 3 minutes. Milk in the cup - 3 minutes. Conversation with a co-worker about filling the coffee machine later - 5 minutes (in the middle of my order). There were hamburgers and fries ordered after my coffee that came out first. The final straw was watching them add 6 coffees worth of chocolate syrup to finish it off (they had already added enough for one drink 12 minutes earlier). It looked so bad I walked away before they could spend another 3 minutes finding/putting a lid on. Unfortunately I paid first, so I ate the $6 and walked away, incredibly disappointed. Let's just say that if you're getting off the interstate and want a taste of local food and to stock up on all things locally sourced, this is the place to go. I'm not a Vermontian (Vermontite?) so I can only observe as one from a place where it's hard to find quality anything, art/health/positive lifestyle are not often priority, and encountering genuine strong community connection feels so rare that it feels like magic when it happens. THAT SAID - this place being my first stop in Vermont really set the stage for pretty much the total opposite of everything I'm accustomed to (and next several days in the state passed the vibe check too!). It was wonderful to see so many healthy options inclusive of all types of dietary needs, as well as wide variety of locally sourced produce, ingredients, packaged goods, sauces, and more. Flowers/bouquets for sale in various parts of the store is a lovely touch! Had to smile each time I passed them. Everyone was so friendly and seemed brimming with enthusiasm and joy each time one person ran into another. I don't know if everyone *really* knew each other, but they all gave off an energy that they were so happy to cross paths and were all old friends. This being my first stop upon crossing state lines had me in such an inspired mindset for the weekend I even made a little walkthrough tour TikTok, and one day hopefully soon it will adventure its way out of the drafts. I have family in VT but have never been able to stop by this Co-op. Many Co-op's don't allow the general public, however, the Putney Food Co-op does! If you live in town you can secure a membership card by volunteering. The prices are fantastic even for a non member. I stopped at their deli and got a Ruben ($9.99) and also, "made my own sandwich (starting at $9.99)". Not only was the service fantastic, but the food was incredible. Fresh, large portions, and delicious. The Co-op itself is lovely and has so much to offer. Old school ambiance. If you're in the area, you should definitely stop in!! read more

The Putney Food Co-op is such a gem, and I absolutely love getting their sandwiches--especially the custom veggie ones. The dill vegan mayo? Top-tier. Like, truly next level flavor. It elevates everything it touches and makes every bite a joy. That said, I do wish the veggie sandwiches came a bit more generously packed. I always order them custom, and while they're super tasty, I find myself craving just a little more--more veggies, more of that incredible mayo, just a little more fullness overall. The flavors are so good, I just want the sandwich to be as satisfying as the ingredients deserve! Still, the staff are kind and the vibe is cozy, and the Co-op always feels like a community hub. Really clean and modern! We went there for Brekkie, made to order bagel sandwiches and fresh made coffee. Prices were fair and the bagel sandwiches were amazing- the coffee as like liquid gold! Terrific sandwiches made to order at the counter. Breakfast sandwiches, paninis, cold sandwiches, grilled sandwiches... everything looked good. I had a grilled "Rachel" and it was both excellent and huge. This is of course also a full grocery with a mix of fresh, packaged, and prepared foods. The prepared foods are not cheap, and I advise you to ook at the dates before buying. Upon the recommendation of my son (a Landmark student), I stopped by the Co-Op to sample one of their sandwiches. Wow... very nice. I ordered one the bacon avocado & tomato panini & was very pleased with it. Very satisfying! I took the time to stroll around the store & would have to say I was impressed by the depth & breadth of the selection there. I am generally very protective of folks that work in the industry because I get it. And I know it's hard work. But our experience today makes me hope that my comments will help make improvements? The place was very busy.... day after Christmas travelers kind of busy. The food was fantastic. Fresh and flavorful, exactly what you need mid-road trip. This review has nothing to do with the food- which was truly delicious. However, The service was incredibly lacking. Details below if you care to keep reading. We ordered two sandwiches. It was taking absolute ages for orders to be taken.... and it felt like us placing an order was an annoyance. It took easily 25 minutes to get our sandwiches, which is a long time but understandable for freshly made sandwiches on such a busy day. When our order was finally called, the 12inch meatball sub we ordered was only a 6inch. I waited patiently for probably 5 minutes (a long time considering I made eye contact multiple times with the woman who handed me the sandwiches - and it's pretty obvious something must have been wrong with the food). She finally answered with "what's up" which felt again, like I was an annoyance. I told her about the issue, was very patient and polite, and then waited 10 or so minutes for the other half. Nothing came. Having eaten in front of him, I told my fiancé I'd go wait because they recognized my face and would maybe remember easier. I stood and waited for 15 minutes... no acknowledgement. The women behind the counter were chatting and high-five giving about finishing the rush... but no one looked my way. One lady came over eventually and said " you're Hannah right?" In reference to a sandwich for Hannah that they'd been yelling the order out for for about 20 minutes. And I said no, I'm waiting for the other half of the meatball sub. No apology, no kind of rush on the situation, and got a messily wrapped, not very pretty other half. I hate to complain. But it took us an hour and half to get our lunch today. And if we'd been treated politely or made to feel like our business was appreciated, it would have been okay. We are very patient. We are super laid-back. But we also both know how to work in customer and food service- and were frustrated with our experience. We will very probably come back, but we'll call ahead way in advance. We stopped in to Putney VT on our way home from Stowe Vt. Its hard to know what town to pull into when driving along 91 south. Here are a few reasons to pop into the Putney Co-op. They have a great selection of deli sandwiches and wraps. I had the Turkey Melt Wrap with bacon, alvacado and cheddar. It did drip a little bit but overall a good sandwich. A well appointed coffee bar is handy when traveling and I wasn't disappointed. The team at th Co-op had arranged a selection of 6 or 7 coffee varieties - the hand printed signs added a rustic appeal. Beyond the deli and coffee the Putney Coop is a bustling little grocery store. I know that picking up groceries while on a road trip isn't always a priority but this would be a perfect spot to load up for a ski trip. Check these guys out. The employee working behind the hot food counter informed me that they experienced their oven had set on fire earlier in the week, meaning they couldn't make any sandwiches that needed heat of any sort. That was fine, so I ordered the chicken Cobb wrap. It included chicken, bacon, tomatoes, avocado, Swiss cheese, honey mustard and lettuce on a Spinach wrap. I was very excited to receive the wrap, but upon biting into it, I bit into a piece of chicken that still had bone in it. Anyways, I tried to ignore that and enjoy the wrap. I noticed something white and thick in the wrap so I pulled it out to see what it was. I was appalled to realize that I was looking at a really fatty slice of bacon. Working in the food industry myself, I would never serve food like that to someone. It's funny because usually you trust the people that make your food, but I felt like I couldn't proceed with the sand which without looking through it's contents. Kind of a grubby little place to get a bite to eat. Dysfunctional set up where you must first wait in line to order your meal, go pay for it at a cash register before they start your order, get a paid receipt, bring it back to where you ordered your sandwich, wait in line to give your receipt before they begin to fill your order and then carry your filled order back to the cash register to get bagged. Took 25 minutes to get a take out sandwich Whew !! Why??? And the sandwich was crappily made in an obviously dirty food prep area. Bleech. These people need to grow up, get it together, and figure out how to serve their customers. read more

I love how Vermont has food coops all over the place. This was a great one to visit. Small but packed with items. I was impressed that for soup they had a Bouillabaisse complete with mussels. I've never seen that offered ever in any soup assortment outside of a restaurant. They also had a lot of nice looking home made hot items like stuffed peppers. We had just eaten which was too bad as I really wanted to try that Bouillabaisse soup so stuck to smaller items like cherry tomatoes and a fantastic pear gingerbread cake that was a lovely flavor pairing and nice and moist. Everyone was friendly and wanted to help us which was nice. If I lived in the area I would for sure be a member here. Great prices, nice staff, lovely home made food and plenty of parking. read more

One of my favorite food stores to shop at. You can find everything you need, literally at any co op. Not just food, but everything from vitamins and supplements, to household neccessities and kitchen supplies, and beautifully crafted and responsibly sourced clothing, accessories, and housewares and gifts. Every co op is a gift to our communities. Run by you, and of service to all. Really, apart from the healthy nutrition options, and products, the best part is meeting all the awesome people in your community. Putney co op has burger night on thursdays and game night as well. As well as a hot bar and kitchen and cafe. And they are expanding this year. How exciting. You should definitely go out and visit. You won't be disappointed. read more

This place is every crunchy granola's dream. Local, fresh and slightly overwhelming by the choices you have. Sure, it can get pricey but get what you pay for. The only way, unless you're a true local, to figure out what you like by trying it all. Daunting? perhaps...Delicious? you betcha! Right off the highway on Route 5. Don't shop here if you're hungry at all, or you will want to spend infinity dollars on bread and pickles and pastries and wine. So far it's my favorite co-op in Vermont. Decent size, full without being crowded. Lots of crusty, grainy bread up front. As a panivore, I appreciate this. There's a little tiny corner of beer, too. I especially like the little cafe inside. I got my sandwich to go, but there are a few tables inside and a small al fresco dining option. I got the vegan tempeh club, which was hearty and delicious. There is a large selection of groceries here as well as a great selection of food made to order. Was pleasantly surprised by the fresh options available-a nice change from traditional road trip food of McDoubles!! I ordered a falafel pita, (and I'm no vegetarian) - huge portion size, so I was stoked when I realized I'd have more to eat later! It was delicious!!! Man I'm really gonna miss this place!! Heading south for the winter, and this guy Clark at the co-op deli is really making it harder for me to leave. The co-op cafe always has the bomb-ass grub, either hot food & salad bar, or menu. Today I'm sitting there chatting with a fellow traveler, and his "open face bagel with smoked salmon masterpiece" arrives. Definitely not what I was planning on ordering, but the amount of drool it induced convinced me otherwise. I'm gonna attach a pic of mine. Check out the million dollar bagel. All for closer to $9. My daughter attends school in Putney and stops here often. She loves the pumpkin bisque! I would like to share something about their customer service. My daughter's birthday was coming up and I wanted to send her some cupcakes to celebrate. I called the Co-Op (6:30 the night before her birthday) and spoke with Adrienne. She listened to my plea for help, took my information and said she would call me back. She did, about 10 minutes later, after calling the Baker at home to see what they could do in a matter of hours. Not only did Adrienne make sure my daughter had beautiful & delicious cupcakes for her birthday, but she also went above & beyond and added a bouquet of flowers for me. My daughter was so surprised! As if out of a dream, the tiny town of Putney has one of the best food Coops anywhere. Although small in size, it's crammed to the walls with all the best local, organic veggies, fresh baked breads and colorful fruits - plus most of the other packaged foods you'd expect to find at the other "big guys". The deli has delicious sandwiches and soups made daily in their own kitchen, and the salad bar is well equipped. Both the indoor and outdoor eating areas a great for enjoying your meal, plus the staff are always friendly and helpful. This is a wonderful community space (see the boards as you walk in!) and a truly special place. If you're a vegetarian or vegan, the Putney Coop is one of the best stops off interstate 91 for a bite to eat! read more

Stopped here last Sunday while passing through town to grab a couple grocery items. We were very impressed with the ease of parking, and friendliness of the staff, along with the selection of items for such a small store. Even though it was busy and the lines were long, our check-out person was still super friendly and helpful. The bulletin board outside kept us busy reading for a good 10 minutes on our way out, great way to see what was going on in the area. read more

The epitome of progressive New England style. Half the customers may be from Brooklyn yet this small locally-operated coop feels as Vermont as the hills, cows and I-91. I cannot drive past and not stop and do so frequently. This is just a very special place and regardless of what you need - or don't - foodwise they've got something great to eat. read more
