Cute little store to stop and grab a snack or small meal from. They have a little bit of everything.

Looking for a few souvenir gifts, we stopped in for the gift shop. We went directly upstairs and didn't check out the general store on the first floor, although it looked to have a large assortment of things. I would have liked to check it out, but my teenage sons were ready to leave after visiting the gift shop. The gift shop was clearly marked with an arrow to go up the stairs. There were so many cool things, we circled the shop several times and kept finding new items we didn't see previously. Wind chimes, incense, mugs, toys, clothes, kitchen gadgets, paintings, candles, etc. It really had something for everyone. The cashier was very nice and offered assistance while also allowing us privacy to shop without feeling like we were being watched. My only suggestion would be for more souvenir items specific to VT. There were a few but not many. I was able to find some silly things - a VT tic tac toe board and a small map of VT puzzle. There were bottle openers as well, but that wouldn't have been suitable for the friends we were getting gifts for. My son bought himself a multi-tool pen and little notepad. There aren't many good general stores left these days, but this is definitely one of the best that remain true to form. Parking may be tricky on a "busy" day, but there's space down the road and it's good to walk now and then. Lots of food and supplies to choose from. Unfriendly service and lukewarm coffee. Don't bother with this store Their coffee is way back behind the registers and not possibly bke for me to read the labels or blend descriptions. When I ask the person at the counter what blends they have she looked at the coffee and read off the names facing the coffee and gave me no description until I asked. She did not smile and did not seem to enjoy serving customers. When I got my refill it was tepid so they clearly do not monitor the temperature of their coffee and do not seem to care. When I told a different person that the coffee was lukewarm she said "OK" no apology and poured me a partial smaller cup of a different blend in a paper cup so I could check the temp, which was ok so I poured it in my cup which filled it 1/2 way and she was not going to top it up. When I asked for the cup to be filled again no apology and a terse comment when she handed it back. Horrible customer service and I will never stop here again. read more

Wow. What a beautiful spot. A general store with an incredible view of the falls. We found this place on Yelp and decided to stop for a snack on our way to Lyme NH for a wedding. The store has that small town feel I was hoping for but was jam packed with so much more than I imagined. From a huge beer and wine selection to locally produced goods to sandwiches and in-house made heat & eat items I was truly impressed. Food is great! Definitely try the chicken pesto sandwich, it's delicious. They have a wide variety of drink options from local to international brands. Found a local maple seltzer that is surprisingly refreshing and not too sweet. Definitely going to go here again for lunch. Also pretty inexpensive for a sandwich and drink. read more

Stopped here recently with the family. Food is excellent, the people who work there are super friendly, and the gift shop upstairs has such unique high quality gifts. I was able to do all my Christmas shopping in one place because of the variety of items for sale, and they feature local artist as well. Nothing like an authentic country store. read more

We had business in Vermont before phase II of their re-opening. Finding a bathroom on the road was next to impossible. I'd bought gas at one place - the clerk said the restrooms were "closed." Another spacious mini-mart at least had the courtesy of posting a sign - "out of order." This store came to the rescue. I walked in prepared to offer them beaucoup bucks to use their loo - but I figured I'd ask. "Oh, sure!" [she didn't ask me if I was going to buy something - instead she beckoned clearly in the right direction]. The accommodation was spotless. And each employee was as helpful and cheerful as the first. Now the important part: the deli is astounding. There are standard sandwiches and salads to grab-and-go. We had turkey with cheddar and it was lovely and substantial - and not costly. We did not try any of the black board specials, but from the descriptions they're tantalizing. There's an array of soft drinks (and beer). There are groceries and Vermont specialties. I bought a quart of maple syrup. I looked at the cheeses - all local - and dared not go there if only because we had no way to keep it cool on the way home - in the car for hours. Visit this store. Super cute. Super local. Super staff. This was probably my favorite place we visited in Putney! The Putney General Store offers a little bit of everything: grocery, pantry staples, dry goods, beer, wine, deli, sandwiches, coffee and pastries. Though I didn't buy much on our visit, I really enjoyed wandering the aisles looking at all the local options. The cold brew was great - and they have non-dairy milk, which was greatly appreciated! And the pastries were divine. I had already eaten breakfast, but their offerings were TOO GOOD to pass up! The staff were very friendly, helpful and happy to offer local recommendations for activities/places to visit. I will definitely be back when we visit the area again. This place is #sandwichgoals My best friend and I stopped off in Putney on our way from Vermont to Connecticut in the hopes we might find a decent deli sandwich. What we ended up with were two of the best sandwiches either of us had ever had. She had the avocado + veggie and I had the Sarah. They were HUGE. No scrimping on meat, cheese or veggies, and the flavors were divine. The shop also had a nice little wine, beer and dairy section. I live in Seattle, so who knows if or when I'll be back, but if you are traveling southbound on Interstate 91, so yourself a massive favor and pop by! read more

We stopped in for sandwiches on our drive back to NYC. What a charming place! All of us enjoyed our food - I had a breakfast sandwich with a very delicious everything bagel. Seating wise there is a large bar against the front window with pedestal seating, as well as 2 tables and chairs in the refrigerated section towards the back of the shop. The market has lots of different products, fresh, packaged, and frozen foods, as well craft beer and kombucha. I found Canadian imported fragrance-free goats milk lotion and spicy hot chocolate. We didn't didn't explore the upper level which I assume was chock full of odds and ends. I would definitely stop in again if we find ourselves in the area. read more

I was born & raised in Vermont; it's places like this that make me miss it so dearly. The building the store is in was originally a mill from the 1700s. In the 1840s it was converted to a store and has been operating continuously ever since. They have a butcher counter with fantastic cuts of meat & freshly ground hamburger (eat your heart out Shaws!). I even saw some seafood in there. There is a great selection of local microbrews and a wall of wine. They also carry tons of local Vermont products like cheese, maple syrup, Ben & Jerry's, salsa, candles, soap, soda, juices & so much more. In the back there is a cafe where they serve sandwiches, hot entrees, coffee & tea and various pastries. There is a toy department & video store as well (is there anything they don't have!!!). This is a neat, classic, small town store. We'll drop in here if we're in the area and need something quick. They have your basic supply items along with beer, wine, deli and coffee. The entire building was rebuilt after a fire and the inside has a really nice rustic look to it. There are two levels to explore. There's a seating area on the main level for those getting coffee or something to eat. For your basic supply items, prices aren't bad considering it's a smaller, non chain store. Very, "quaint" country style General Store in the center of town. You can order breakfast and sandwiches, get coffee and cold drinks. Plus the usual misc. items they stock their shelves with. Lot's of local items along with home made items made there. Cookies, cakes, brownies, etc. A few tables inside and outside on the porch. Seems popular with the locals. They seem to hire only kids who are usually rude and don't know how to do their job correctly. They've overcharged me and other customers multiple times and the most recent time I went, I asked for my food to be heated up multiple times. They assured me it had just come off the grill so it was already hot. When I bit into it the food was cold. I've been coming here since I was a kid and it's sad that the new staff and employees have made the place go downhill. read more

Rustic feel to the place without the grunge often found in many other general stores, helpful staff look for ways they can assist. We are so excited the new Putney General Store is reopening on Saturday May 6th. The "soft" opening appears to be going extremely well. Well-stocked and well-staffed with delicious looking deli food and sandwiches. Typical grocery items to grab when you've run out and a good selection of beer and wine.
