Went to the Winkin Owl today to play darts, have a drink, and grab some lunch. We had to order at the bar because the waitress didn't seem particularly interested in serving us. Not long after, four guys came in to play pool, and the language was nonstop--every second word was an expletive. Then one of them started loudly describing a very explicit personal story, and it just kept going. They were extremely loud and made the whole atmosphere uncomfortable. I mentioned it to the waitress, but she didn't seem to care. We ended up leaving, and we won't be back. read more

I have been going to this pub for some time, even during owner Malkeet. Good beer prices and wings are 36 cents. The food is a 5/10 as the menu is bland and boring. Average staff as some should not work with people. It is operated like a club house and If favored by staff your treated well, like Big Jim a patron that gets special attention. Recently, I waited 25 minutes for a brew and watched a server pass me by 7 times. How long would you wait? They did not like me going to the bar to order and was accused of yelling. No, but I was not happy. Last month I saw a customer get harassed by two others when the guy just wanted to watch football. When bartender Tyler decided to punt the customer in favor of the two others. Lots of shots for Tyler at the bar that night and plenty of inappropriate vocalizations by staff afterward. Spike the owner, where are you? read more

So I have to let you all know that the previous owners from 4 years ago have bought this place back, renovated and re-opened. They had sold to a group that ran it into the ground, hence the bad reviews. We went in on Tuesday Nov 26th 2019, and I order wine & wings, hubby had beer. The place is spotless! completely cleaned to within a inch of it's life. Bathroom sparkles (so presume the kitchen does too). Staff are lovely, and worked there under the original owners. The wings are the best I've had here in the past 4 years. The wine was actually good - not that cheap shit other pubs try to sell you. I must tell you that I'm becoming very picky on my food. The Winkin' Owl is back to being good. read more

New management has saved this place again. We stopped going for a few years when the other owners were there. Saw it changed and we are so happy we gave it another chance. Food was super good, wing specials are yummy and not tiny sized with lots of choices. The fish and chips are really good. Specials every day and the staff is attentive, friendly and fast. If you have not been here for a while, give it another shot. Its so nice to have them back.. we missed them. read more

Yelp this place has reopened. My son and I stopped in on February 9 for wings and beer. We had three flavors of wings and have to say that the wings were delicious. Just like the good old days. Great wings, great service, good beer. We will be back read more

Wing night Wednesdays. This place has created some very good concoctions for wing flavors. I don't get why it has such a low star rating. The service is great. Acknowledged as soon as I entered.. $4.50 pints of grizzly paw during happy hour. Supporting local breweries. Can't get better than this. read more

The food and drinks were all amazing but it's so hard to hear the person you're sitting with at a table over the tv and music. Also our table was dirty before we sat down, almost like it wasn't cleaned after the last people that were at the booth. The foods amazing, the atmosphere not so much. read more

So I love the vibe here - part parent's basement rec-room, part run-down suburban English pub. It's a huge place with a live-music stage on one side and by all accounts it seems fun. Being nested at the end of Bow Bottom Trail in a strip mall, makes it more of a neighborhood destination, and you get the sense that most of the customers here are regulars. We went on wing night, which is one of my favorite days of the week, because we'd heard the 'Owl has 69 flavours of wing. As it turns out the wings were the most disappointing part of the evening - they are obviously culled from the scrawniest chickens they could find. The m.o. Is to deep fry, then coat in the vast range of flavours ranging the gamut of sticky-sweet to hot and sour... while it sounds like it should be magical it really isn't. Frankly the wings are kind of gross and retain kind of an industrial-freezer burn taste regardless of the unimpressive sauce they're dunked in. Luckily this was off-set by a pretty generous serving of well-appointed nachos (for the price) and an okay selection of strip-mall-bar-quality beers and efficient service. read more

When out to have a bite and play some darts. First time at this place. Its bright yet cozy like a pub should be. Lots of tvs with different games. They have two dart boards, a pool table and a few VLT's The staff was good and took good care of us. The food was really good. Had the perogies and sausage and it was delicious. I will definately go back read more

You want a review of the food? Take a number. You're going to be waiting a long time because I never even got served by a waitress. I am extremely disappointed in this establishment's customer service (or lack thereof). Our party was ignored for 40 minutes while the waitress tended to other tables, some of whom arrived after us. In fact, one table arrived after us, had their food orders taken, received their food and ate their food in the time we spent waiting for the waitress to serve us. We tried to get her attention on our own, but she never even looked our way let alone asked us if there was anything we needed. I honestly don't know the reasoning behind this experience. Lack of organization? Low number of available staff members? Forgetfulness? Who knows. In any circumstance, it was a horrible night and we won't be returning here. read more

If you are looking for a one of a kind, extra special pub, this is not it. BUT if you are looking for a pub that has great pub food and unusual fare on their food menu, this is the place! Our group of four people ordered the flowing: Tuscan salad with steak slices, it was delicious even if the steak that was ordered medium rare came medium well. FishTacos. Generous and tasty portion! Spicy Chicken Fettucini that was as spicy as described in the menu! Chicken Fajitas that arrived on a sizzling hot platter accompanied with more fixins than you could ever dream of! Each one of the plates was huge! All of them can be shared by two people. We also ordered the Monday special of deep fried pickles at 24 cents each. These were on the smallish side and extra greasy. There is a pool table, two dart boards and 4 slot machines as well as the required tv screens set on tennis, soccer and Russian hockey ( it is July! ). I recommend this place if you want affordable, not your usual but tasty pub food . read more

I used to love this place ,but since the new management took over it went downhill.Last night,I witnessed the owner yelling at one of the servers infront of the costumers! he was very disrespectful to her and even told her to shut up.I thought it was very unprofessional And as a customer it was quite upsetting to watch something like that! After that happened,we found out that some servers and the whole kitchen staff walked out ,while we were waiting for our order.Needless to say we ended up going to another restaurant. Im sure after the whole "show" last night, he will lose alot of costumers! I guess its safe to say as much as I love their wings, its not worth to go back there. I refuse to patronize a place who doesnt respect their staff. I give 5 stars to the staff! And 3.5 for the food. read more

First time here. Been sitting here for 16 minutes without a drink refill. Wow.

I went here for the friday all you can eat, fish and chips with two friends. I was expecting it to be packed but it was practically empty. I also wasn't expecting it to be the best fish i've ever had especially for only 12 dollars, but i was hoping it would be at least ok. It came out pretty fast for me and one friend, but the other had to wait a good 10 more minutes. All of our fish were either overcooked or undercooked, really greasy, and rather bland. The onion rings my friends ordered were greasy as hell. I was the only one that temped fate by ordering a second helping. I regretted it almost immediately. I went home feeling rather ill (not food poisoning, but rather the amount of grease i think). Just as our order was coming out, a live band started getting ready. They were pretty obnoxious and annoying, and the music was pretty bad. Really annoying to try to eat while that was going on. I wouldn't recommend this place based on my experience, but maybe the rest of the menu item doesn't taste as bad. read more

Ever since the new owner has taken over this previously wonderful neighbourhood pub has consistently gone down hill. We are all about supporting our local eateries and when we saw the sign that said "under new management"'we though GREAT - let's give it another go! Well...that was a mistake. The restaurant had about 6 tables occupied, 2 servers and a bartender. Apparently they had a new chef as well! We placed our order which was 5 different types of wings, fish and chips and some veggies. After 40 minutes I asked our server if they were "plucking" the chickens? She replied it shouldn't be too much longer. After another 5-10 mins I got up and went over to the bar and asked again. Staying we had been waiting for 45 mins, the place was dead and it was ridiculous. I asked where the manager was, well apparently the new chef was the manager! And when I saw him earlier, it was the same NEW OWNER! When our wings finally came to the table, they were COLD!!! We promptly told our server we didn't want this crap and paid for our beers. So...moral of the story...don't believe everything you read! They are not under management, our beloved neighbourhood pub is the same shithole the new owner has turned it into. Save your money and support other locals like Filos, Lighthouse, Three Crowns. read more

I like how they greet you as soon as you walk in. Server was friendly but food and drinks took a ridiculously long time. With two other tables in the entire place a 1 drink took 10 minutes. Food took over 40 minutes. We ended up canceling our order and going to Brewster's. Defiantly won't ever be back read more

A - List. Recommended. This is a nice, friendly neighborhood gathering spot for those looking to quench their thirst, engage in easy conversation and unwind. I felt comfortable from the moment I sat down. The girls are pleasant, helpful and efficient. There is a wide range of liquids to sample and the food is good. The evening and weekends can be busy. Friday and Saturdays, as you would expect, are busy. There appears to be a large following of regulars. Go and have some fun. Based on my visits, this is a good place. read more

What the heck has happened to this place?? We are regulars who have been going to the Winkin' Owl for well over 10 years. Over the past year the food and service have steadily decreased -- but their prices have increased on some items over 300%! We used to love going on Thursday nights for a family get together for ribs and beers, however, we may not be back for a very long time. We went in last night for rib night (gone up from $2.00/basket - $4.50/basket). Ordered a basket of ribs, basket of breaded shrimp and a beef dip. Although the place wasn't that busy our order took 45 minutes...and when we did get it the ribs were cold, the shrimp weren't cooked through (still cold on the inside), and they got our order for the chips wrong. They keep saying they have new cooks, wait staff, etc., but if they don't get their house in order soon they'll lose a lot of long-time customers. read more

This place used to be an OK dive pub, the new owners have run it into the ground. The wait and kitchen staff were awful last night, management issue for sure. Our waitress was almost in tears, she knew it was that bad. It was wing night, we gave up after waiting an hour for 30 wings. The place is messy and cluttered. Empty bottles sitting in corners instead of being put away, curtains to cover the dart boards are filthy. Close to home and it used to be OK for a beer, but they no longer deserve my money. I know I should not drink wine in places like this, the house red will make you shudder...ewww. read more

This use to be our favourite place to go for breakfast, dinner or lunch. The food WAS outstanding Now it is garbage, the burgers (use to be the best) are so greasy and gross. The new owners are going to run this wonderful little neighborhood pub into the ground read more

Greattttt Pub! Waitresses are very nice and prompt, lots of daily specials and the Platter is fantastic!

Well, where do I begin? Never have I ever met such a rude, and pompous sound guy. My band played here, and it was an absolute s show. The sound guy was not just a sound guy, and in fact was wearing multiple hats bartending. Changeovers took 20-30 minutes between acts which is absolutely ridiculous considering the musician's demands. All the while, the owner was sitting with his friends in the back observing while his bartenders sunk. Look I know I'm rambling around a bit, but the sound guy even had the nerve to challenge my choice of vocal pedal. Uhh dude? You are a failed musician. Sorry, but you should maybe consider changing your ways. Levels on the stage were horrendous, and none of the musicians could hear themselves. Even had me show up 3 hours early for a "sound check", where I actually didn't even get to sing. He claims to be the best sound guy in Calgary, but this guy would be unemployed if he was anywhere but the suburbs, and working for these guys. Back to the food, and service. Well if you like flat beer, and waiting for 40 minutes in between drinks then the Winkin' Owl is for you! What a bunch of rookies and a-holes. Oh, may I please get a drink? No, I'm off soon. Soon? What does that mean? Where is the owner? Can I speak to him please? No wonder the only people that were in the building that night were from the people there to see the show. WHAT A JOKE. Crap food, crap sound guy, crap sound, crap drinks, crap. Honestly, call John Taffer, because he is the only one who can save you now. read more

Crappy food!!! Worst wings & steak skewers are garbage. I know it's wing day, but don't offer discounted food if you can't put out a decent product read more

Nope it's open. It was closed because the last owners broke all kinds of health codes and they got shut down. I guess it's fixed now but here is the thing. Looks the same and the service still sucks. Real terrible service. Food was ok. Typical pup food no better no worse than other pubs but the service! If you like waiting for your drink, menu, food, cutlery or anything, this is your place. Seriously, I'm all for supporting local but I work hard for my money and when I feel like spending some of it, I sure don't want to be treated like I'm an inconvenience to the staff. Sorry I didn't know what food I wanted before you handed me the menu, does that really mean I have to wait another 15 mins before you come back to take my order? The only tables being looked after were big groups of guys. If you were a table of 2 or just a guy grabbing a beer and some snacks forget it. They have no interest in you. If I could give 0 stars I would. I'll spend my money around the corner at the lighthouse. Their service is fast super friendly and the place is clean. Or Filos, same great service good food more$. The thing is, there are choices here in Deer Run. I know the Winkin Owl won't be one of mine anymore. read more

Another great meal. Stopped in on another Sunday. Wanted a meal, so I ordered the Sausage and Perogies. Damn. So good. Fried onions, bacon. Topped with sauerkraut. Can't say much more than yum. Horrible service!!!! Waitress loudly yelling at other employees, bartender slamming stuff. VERY unprofessional!!!! Waitress never checked if our food was ok, which it wasn't!! Had to chase her down every time we needed anything. She brought us our bill without us asking for it, felt like we were pushed out the door! Then she went and sat at a table, ate cake, then returned to "waitressing". I WOULD NOT recommend this place. The GM also needs taught appropriate tone of voice. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. This was the single worst experience I have ever had a restaurant. It took 2 hours to get our wings, the waitress was absolutely terrible, the manager avoided our table and refused to speak with us and then we waited another HOUR to get the bill. 0/10 on every aspect, the wings were tough and chewy and the drinks were flat and Luke warm. New management has ruined this place for me. Never going back. read more

Went for their wing night and got very poor service. Waitress was extremely rude and threw our food on the table without a single word. When asked to speak with a manager I instead got the bar tender which shrugged the complaint. read more

Since changing ownership this place has nose dived We were regulars who have struggled to stay loyal but will now not return Last night we had the most horrific, unprofessional and incompetent service They "stacked" 10 baskets of food on top of each other( yes the dirty basket bottoms taken from the bar top where everyone so tochong were put directly on top of our food. The bar tender ten attempted to carry this stack, squishing everything g together to our table The centre of the pile slid out dumping hot chicken wings down the back of the person we were there to celebrate We could have accepted this "oops" but the response from the staff following was awful No one really cared his shirt was a hot wing mess, we could not get them to pick up the wings from the floor or bring anything to help clean him up They dumped the food on the table . When we asked which wings were winch ( they were not communal) the response was" I don't know there's a s**t load of them. Th then walked away after saying " hey buddy hope your ok" When we asked our waitress about it her response was"this isn't my d Fault ,what do you want me to do about it" We asked 3 times To speak to a manager' and none was produced When we said we were leaving and asked for the bill she disappeared for 10 minutes, to then say your good to leave- no additional comment, apology or indication of if we were to pay for the beer we had drank As we left my husband made the comment to our waitress that the manager was either not on site or to uninvolved to care about his neighbor hood customers The reply he received is "don't worry I competed your bill" So we took the birthday party down to another neighbor hood pub It's the absolute last time we will support this venue STAY AWAY!! read more

We USED TO frequent this pub for wing night. USED TO being the key word. Tonight we had the rudest experience ever known! One server had started yesterday, another 2 hours before we arrived and the third 2 days ago. Why? Because new management took over and ALL the former staff quit! Tonight, we sat for an hour before having our order taken. Then when the first half of the food came, the orders were wrong. The second half didn't come until after we had complained and the bartender swore at us. The owner was requested and took another 15 minutes to come forward. He promised 30% off for our whole group of 20 people. We gave him the benefit of the doubt and ordered more wings. Again we got wrong orders and were shorted some others. When we went to pay the owner had given his staff instructions NOT to give the 30% discount and left the building! What a crook!! No wonder his staff all quit. Please don't go here. We don't want you taken advantage of too. read more

Very bad food. Chicken alfredo sauce tastes like flour and beef in beef dip tastes like cardboard.

Came here a while ago with my husband after getting some dental work done. Had wanted to check it out because of the sign out front that brags about all the flavors of wings. Came into a musty, dark old bar, where obviously mostly locals hang out. One waitress greeted us with a mouthful of food and told us to sit anywhere. We chose a far booth in the back. The table was dirty, the seats had crumbs on them, and the menus were smeared with something sticky. I typically give places the benefit of the doubt, especially when it's my first time visiting them....But cleanliness is high on my priority list, and this was not off to a great start. If there's crumbs on your seats and your menus are sticky, how clean could your kitchen (where you prepare my food) actually be? The wings were nothing to write home about. Little meat that tasted rubbery. We took most of them home but ended up throwing them all out rather than reheat them. The Waitress we had was friendly and attentive (seeing as how it was mostly empty in there anyway.) That was the only saving grace for this place, unfortunately. read more
