Off duty staff was having an inappropriate conversation with bartender. Asked them to stop and one started screaming making a high pitched noise afterwards. Then the bartender took my drink away saying I was cut off, even though I had to start recording because the off duty staff was being aggressive, that was when she started screaming/making some kind of high pitched noise in response. It was all a bit weird, when I asked for a refund the bartender claimed he didn't know how to leave a refund, and that's when the off duty staff member tried to give me cash. The conversation itself was inappropriate in my mind, as a customer I don't go to a bar to hear about staff gossip and how they are going to get drunk. I definitely don't go to a restaurant to hear an off duty staff member scream about it when called out. They could have just told me they don't care about my opinion, but screaming seems a bit over the top. read more

Moved to the area a few months ago have been coming to Blackbird most Wednesdays for their special on wings! Servers have been kind to my husband and I and any friends we bring along. Can be busy but I've never had to wait more than 30 minutes to get seated which is a win for me! First time here, we were greeted by bartender almost immediately as we sat at the bar to watch the leaf game! Ample t.v's had 3 different play off games going! Nice upscale pub quite busy on a Thursday night! The happy hour menu is minimal but prices are very reasonable with appies to please! The steak bites are fantastic and we had pizza after hog& pineapple 8 inch! Definitely a small portion but with the appie it was enough for me to share with my hubby! This place exceeded expectations! I'm actually sitting in the bar right now as I write this. Try the Fried Pepperoni. So good. But be warned, it's spicy! I went here once before when it first opened and it was not good. Even though its a pub it is an upscale urban bar so the prices were more expensive then a regular pub but I was willing to pay it because I thought the food would be trendy and above average. When I ordered the food was nothing but ordinary pub food with a nice description written about it to make you want it and way overpriced for what you were getting. However, like I sad that was my first experience. I recently went again with friends who wanted to go so I thought that I should give it another chance and boy am I glad that I did. What I got was so absolutely delicious. It was called "Junk chips" and the price that you paid for what you got was not bad at all. It was $18 but you got their housemate kettle chips, a delicious beef brisket shredded on top with many other toppings including their pickled onions which are to die for. After looking at the menu their is more that I want to try so I will definitely be back and update my review and I have more experiences :) read more

Yelp is telling me I haven't written a review for this place yet, which surprised me because I've been here so many times now. These guys are owned by the same company that has a few other pubs in town like The Berwick over in Cranston (also great), The King's Head, Bank & Baron, etc. Each pub definitely has it's own personality. Blackbird is on the classier end of the spectrum and is more akin to it's brother Tommyfield over in Seaton. This definitely isn't The King's Head! When deciding to come here the conversation between my wife and I goes something like this: Wife: Do you want to go to OJ's? Me: I'd rather go to Blackbird. This is code for "Is my wife going to have tomato bacon soup or am I going to get a better beer selection?" Once State & Main opens in Mahogany, replace tomato bacon soup with pretzel sticks. I don't always win, but it's not a loss for my wife either to come here instead as she also enjoys it. They have a good sized beer list with a variety of craft options from around the city. They have specials every night for both food and drinks and now that some of the newness has rubbed off from this place, you can probably get a seat most nights without a wait. I've tried something different for dinner every time I've been here. Their pizzas are good, the poke stack is great (for Calgary comparisons only), the fried chicken is excellent, the enchilada is huge, where do I stop? The only thing on the menu that was a miss for me is the sausage. The menu tells a good story, but I found it dry. As with most pubs, the service is generally good, but there is the odd server that's not a great as the others. Really the only less than great visit we've had here was early on when it was busy and had to sit at the bar and be served by the bartender. The service was poor as he was busy trying to pour drinks for the entire place and keep an eye on essentially an entire section. read more

This is the latest pub from the same ownership group (The Kilt and Caber, Berwick, Tommyfield) and like the other pubs has a style and ambience all its own unlike other "chains." The wood (bar), the high ceilings, and many windows creates a very comfortable spot for a pint and some chow. Numerous USB ports are available for convenient device charging - a nice addition! While not unusual, the addition of hooks for jackets under the high tops and bar is also handy. The menu differs from the Kilt or the Berwick (if you have ever eaten at those establishments). I guess it would be categorized as gastro-pub fare, but really who cares? The choices are varied and from my own samplings and those of my bar mates, we agree (#multipledudesagree) that the eats are worthy! Try the French onion soup, fish and chips (fish is lightly battered), southern fried chicken or the rib appie. The pizzas look amazing, although I have not tried one yet. Service is good whether you sit at the wood, in one of the large booths. Servers know their taps and menu well and easily answer questions about them. In general the staff handles the busy happy hour efficiently. Daily drink and food specials are available. Mondays are $1 rib night - this a full size rib not the deep fried tips. And Thursdays are a must with half price wine and buck-a-shuck oysters. Since the Blackbird is new it does get busy at happy hour so get in early or slide in later. Well, it's wayyy south Calgary, so great if you live down here, I guess! The pub was noisy and had a few young tattooed rowdies mocking people as the came in. Cute! It's a nice looking pub though. We came for nachos, and they were a'ight, but not much cheese (cheese is important), and they had lettuce on them (weird)! The order, however was definitely huge. My partner ordered some southern fried chicken meal and THAT was delicious. I doubt I'd be back here. Although the burger and the fish and chips meals that walked past us looked awesome. I have been to the Blackbird many times and the food is consistently good. Their fried chicken is amazing. When in doubt, get the fried chicken. Their pizza is also really good. Nice thick crust, crispy on the outside but fluffly on the inside. Don't stop there, there are many other great things on the menu. Great cocktail and beer selection. The staff is nice, freindly and approachable. It's somewhat quite unless it's super packed on wings night type thing. Bathrooms are always clean and the decor quite appeals to me. A new addition to the SE, Blackbird has a great interior, I love the deep blues, lots of seating (although often all filled up, but good for them!). Have had a few hit or miss experiences here. First visit was good, half price wine on Thursday - can't complain about that and enjoyed the Autumn Salad, I added chicken to it which they served on the side in a separate bowl which was a bit odd but I dumped it on top and it was a good salad and very filling. Another visit was good for the most part, ordered the fried pickles and a few other appies which were all good, hubs ordered the fried chicken sandwich which came out raw, very undercooked but management dealt with it properly, re-made the sandwich and took it off the bill which was appreciated. Oh well it happens, it's a huge piece of chicken! Visited again and ordered the fried chicken dinner, which hubs said was good, everything was cooked well which was good, I ordered just a caesar salad and it wasn't great, way to much parmesan on top (hard to believe in a thing like to much parmesan but this was excessive) but it was the dressing that was really off, it tasted just like tuna. I think they make the dressing in house which is awesome and I know it includes anchovies but this was very fishy and no garlic or tang at all, could have easily just been a bad batch or not stirred enough? A few hit or miss visits but they haven't been open that long yet, they do serve brunch which I'd like to try and their bar snacks and nachos look awesome so I will definitely be back to try a few more things and figure out the winners on the menu! read more

This is a pretty average neighborhood Pub, the food is adequate the service is good. I find the staff friendly and though it can get busy on Fridays and weekends I still find their service prompt. Decided to check this place out after the girlfriend raved about how great it was. I'm pretty hard to impress on a good day, but I have to say the food was not bad compared to the options we have in the neighbourhood. That being said, you're going to get a kick in the can over the price. $15 for chicken wings is just an example. The beer list is terrible. They decided to pick some of the worst craft beers this city has to offer. I can get behind supporting local but it's clear nobody tasted half the lineup to see it if would fit. I hope some changes are made because I really want to love this place. After being open for a couple days they were already out of 4 menu items. We snacked on a couple appetizers but we decided to skip the main course... you know, because they didn't have them. Substandard open, good appetizers and a shaky beer list have me giving second thought on a return. Maybe once they've got the kinks worked out they will become the gem of the area. A bit loud and super busy on Wednesday nights (wing night) but another visit on a Sunday afternoon was much nicer. The decor is really different for a pub and the food is definitely better than the usual pub fare. The fried pepperoni with spicy mustard was great & the pig fat popcorn was good, too. As for the wings, the pineapple teriyaki are unreal and they have really nailed the dill pickle flavour, too. The beer taps favour local craft brews and offer a wide selection of both local and world beers, which is nice. Can't wait to go back and try some of their other offerings. read more

First visit here, pub is fairly new. Red wine selection is pretty disappointing and the nachos could stand to have about double the cheese. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard it was dead and that the service was not the greatest. We showed up and it was a full house, what impressed me the most was the service. Someone spoke to us right away gave us an honest estimate on how long a table was going to be vrs oh ya 1 minute. I had the Royal with Cheese burger, as the one individual we were with said she really liked it and was not a burger kind of girl. The waitress was friendly and made sure our drinks were never emptied for too long It was more than I expected and completely satisfied with the meal obviously there was left over. I love this place no matter which day I go in. I love the freshness and taste of the food. The servers and bartenders have excellent customer service. They the best wings in town. Very fresh and consistent in size. The wings don't taste frozen or super dry like others. Food is excellent here along with the wide selection of drinks and beer. My wife and I being local residents decided to try this new pub in our area last night. While being open for only 3 weeks we understand, the establishment has definitely work to do to bring us back as regular patrons. Starting with the inside appearance, this pub struggles between being a full on sports bar and that of a local pub where friends could meet for a good meal and drink to socialize. The number of TV's blaring loudly with sports games were only surpassed by the number of unread classics of the shelves at the quieter pub end where we sat. The young waitresses seemed interested to begin with in seating us, but as the meal went along, service was slow and often not completed with no complaints from us , but certainly noticeable in our voices when saying thank you. The food on the menu, as we both noticed right away, was eclectic, and far to strange to have the regular pub fish and chips and steak sandwiches that we had to also be available with anywhere from Korean to Mexican to overstated Italian. All would be great at individual ethnic restaurants for flavour and presentation, but an extreme challenge from a chef at a local pub to handle and give the food the credit it deserves. My wife had the what we thought was a safe choice in the steak sandwich and at first arrival it looked very appealing. She remarked that the steak was good but when going to cut the baguette type bread underneath, it was a struggle that only a chain saw could handle cutting in such a hard piece of bread. She gave up pretty quickly and just had the streak and soggy fries left on the plate. I myself, being on the hunt for the best fish and chips in Calgary over the past few years, even asking the waitress from the outset in ordering if the fish was locally made in house or frozen from the box, declared it was all made in house. I chose to go ahead and what was brought to me was a plate of 2 very greasy pieces of fish with some burnt batter on the outside and underneath the fries were like my wife's, limp and greasy also. Not to be rude, we struggled through our meals leaving segments of food on our plate at the end saying nothing to the waitress, not even being asked as standard how we liked our meals. We said nicely we were full and within seconds the bill and machine were at our table for me to pay . As we left, both having bad tastes in our mouths from the food, we remarked to each other that this new pub has a long way to go before we would be going back. We gave it our best but for now we would rather return to other local pubs where we know the meals and service have already made us want to return for a nice meal out. I can only suggest that the owner named "Chris" take heart in this review and start to review the quality of food he has being served, the patronage his is looking to attrack (we are the middle age couple with the money and opinions to share) and perhaps getting more feedback from his guests like other owners of nearby pubs do nightly as we have come to expect. Best Buttermilk Fried Chicken but terrible steak. Buttermilk Fried Chicken center is moist and outer is crispy and the portions are big. The sweet sauce on the dish is too sweet but my boyfriend liked it. The mashed potatoes were warm and chunky so not so good. The steak and frites was served lukewarm so I sent it back to be recooked. The second serving was hot but the cut had too much tendons, so very chewy, and the cooked onions I think were drowned in ketchup...yuck. The steak sandwich and the steak dinner is the same size of steak but the dinner is $2 more because you get onions and more fries but no garlic bread. Not worth it. No discount on having to send my food back or waiting over an hour to eat! Waiting to get bill or pay is worse. Overall hit and miss and too expensive for a neighbourhood restaurant. read more

I ordered wings and they didn't come until everyone was done their meal and we were ready to leave. BUT they did compensate us for our wait with no hesitation, and the waitress was very friendly.
