Eric's selection of European wines was astounding, the tasting room was well appointed, and he was a gentleman.

Service: Fantastic! Food: Delicious!…read more Cons: Parking is limited A gem of a place located in Newcastle. This tasting room is looking to provide high quality service that people would expect from more established wineries and they are doing it right. I've been here 4 times by the time of writing this review and the experiences have all been fantastic. All the staff really do invest in the guests. Very knowledgeable about the wine and dishes. They take the time to really break down the wine and food if you don't know your stuff like me. They check up on you frequently! I really enjoyed the Carmenere wine. It's not as dry and is easily palatable for people who don't usually prefer red wines. I'm not super knowledgable in wine, but the flavors were earthy and slightly dark fruity taste. Some nights they have live music or events to meet the owners. Can't wait to see how the vineyard turns out if this is just a sneak peak of what's to come!

Our wine host was friendly, super knowledgeable on the wine varieties as well as giving interesting wine descriptions. I thought the pours were generous and I didn't feel rushed. I liked that I was given time to investigate and enjoy which wines I wanted to purchase. I bought 4 bottles to enjoy at home. The Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Sierra red were my top three favorites. I docked a star since it's not really a vineyard and you have a view of Highway 80 but overall it's a great little escape and great way to spend the afternoon.

Wine Pickup Day!!…read more SITREP You know what I love about Wine-Pickup-Day? There's a free wine-tasting on the new varietals that have come in since you were last there! THE SETUP Actually became a fan of this wine brand when visiting their main site - Crystal Basin Cellars - up in Camino, CA. The Owens-owners are fun peeps and hosted a big group of us, taking us on a tour through their local vineyards. Have been up several times since over the last several years. Mr. Owen has regaled me with his debonair styles as he has had me enjoy a couple of bottling sessions there in Camino. SO.MUCH.FUN! THE REDNECK CLUB! (YEEE-YAWWW!) For a (relatively) poor working-schmuck like me, the Owens kindly have different tiers of Wine-Club membership, and luckily for me, the "bottom-of-the-barrel" (ME implicitly *wink!*) club is the "Red Neck Club!" - three (3) bottles of wine every 3 months! *Schawinnng!* That one was made for me! CRYSTAL BASIN STATION In the interim, Crystal Basin Cellars has expanded - like Caesar marching across ancient-Europa - their empire to include Folsom, CA! *Yeeee-Hawwww!* This means that when I'm impeded by travel-circumstances, I don't have to alway go up HWY 50 to Camino to get my wine! Mrs. Owen has kindly been "stationed" (exiled? Haha!) @ Crystal Basin Station with the same deLISH wine we would also find in their Cellars-location. And this was a special trip since I was almost a year behind on collecting my wines, so instead of 3 and I was able to collect my accumulated nine (9) wines! NEW VARIETALS! And you know what that means, right? NEW WINES!! So along with the usual wonderful wines - Sauvignon Blanc & Rose - Mrs. Owen had me try their newer Pommie (Pomegranate Sparkling) and the Fiano (a deeper rose varietal). Both were fruity, the Pommie being sharp & refreshing, and the Fiano a delightfully smooth to the tongue taste-treat. THE LOWDOWN Definitely worth the trip to Folsom to grab some wines at Crystal Basin STATION. [And don't forget to visit some time the main facility Crystal Basin CELLARS up in Camino!

We invited friends and family for an afternoon tasting, grabbed lunch from the café next door, and expected a warm local winery experience. Unfortunately, it turned into one of the most disappointing tasting room visits we've had. The biggest issue was the complete lack of hospitality and awareness toward an older woman in our group recovering from knee surgery. There was no accommodation, no concern, no acknowledgment whatsoever. Instead of any table service or attentiveness, we repeatedly had to get up and walk inside the tasting room over and over for every single pour. By the end of the tasting, we got more steps in than a cattle drive. The two ladies working behind the counter looked like they were counting the minutes until closing time. No smiles. No energy. No effort to educate us about the wines, engage with guests, or make anyone feel welcome. We honestly felt more like an inconvenience than paying customers. I've seen friendlier expressions on bulls during branding season. What makes this especially frustrating is that the tasting room wasn't even busy -- there were maybe three other couples there besides our group. This wasn't staff being overwhelmed. It simply came across as lazy, disengaged, and rude service. The only thing flowing less than the hospitality was the wine pours. What surprised us most is that we've visited several other local wineries in the area over the years and have consistently experienced warm hospitality, friendliness, and genuine customer care. So this experience really stood out -- and not in a good way. Usually wine country feels welcoming. Here, we felt like a herd that wandered into the wrong pasture. Such a shame because the location and concept have so much potential, and we really wanted to support a local winery so close to home. Sadly, our guests left just as disappointed as we did. This tasting experience had less warmth than a steel feed trough in January. Mad Cow Review Rating: -- Two Bulls Down Great opportunity. Terrible hospitality. Would've had a better customer experience being licked by a pasture cow.
