I really am surprised with the positive reviews of this winery. We went once a few months ago, and will never go back. Firstly, the outside appeared completely rundown and unkempt. We wondered if the place was still in business, since it looked like they hadn't landscaped in months. We walked in to a huge room that had all the feels of a commercial garage. It was cold, and it smelled like soured grapes- not in the good way. The air in general was stifling, they could stand to open some windows. Speaking of which, there were no windows or natural light. We were mixed in with storage containers and equipment, and cheap fold out chairs and tables. The gal behind the bar was nice, but the wine was bland and lacked any notes. All in all, it feels like a mom n pop operation where the mom n pop got way in over their head and started cutting corners as soon as they drew up the plans for a winery. :/ read more

When we had our Golden Wedding Anniversary rededication and reception at Rock Hill Winery everything except the weather was perfect. For us 4 friends...wines were way too sweet and smelled corky. But apparently it's just the aged barrel? Hmmm. After 4 of our 7 tastings we decided to leave. Still got charged the $15pp. Oh well. I don't think the owner was happy we had our own opinions of his wines. He was rude. Visited the winery recently and was warmly greeted by the owner Don. We truly appreciated the ambiance of the winery and the history of it being brought lovingly to life by Don and his wife Judy. My husband and I enjoyed the fact that Don asked us questions about our likes and dislikes before our tasting. He then poured accordingly. The wine we tasted was delicious. Don went into detail about the making of his wines and after many years in the business he definitely know what he's doing! We purchased two bottles to take home and enjoy. Visited Rock Hill Winery in 2019 & 2020. In 2020 tasting was in a nice, covered outdoor patio with good spacing & seating, nicer than indoor. Good crowd and tasty wine samples. Bought a tasty Estate Cabernet Franc v. 2016 (purch. in 2019 - see pic) & a tasty white Sauvignon Blanc (purch. in 2020, no pic). Was planning to stop by in late-June 2021, but apparently they were temporarily closed. They may be re-opened on weekends now. I'm not sure of their current status, tasting process, and staffing right now (Aug. 2021). Look into it and hopefully you can visit for tasting. read more

These high rating reviews don't make sense at all. Came here last weekend with my partner and noticed how this place is very rundown and unkempt. We sat at the bar, and the owner was very unprofessional and was rude. We were asked to choose 7 wines from the list to try as part of their tasting. We chose our 7 tastings but weren't given the ones we requested. Wouldn't give my partner any of the ones he had requested. The owner complained that he had to throw away some opened wine bottles from the previous day and didn't want to open new bottles. Hmm, well, maybe you shouldn't offer a wine tasting if you're so concerned about opening new bottles? Or maybe create a set wine tasting menu to avoid "throwing out" unfinished bottles? The service was terrible. There was a group of 4 seated next to us who arrived shortly after us. The owner ignored us and gave all his attention to them. We were there for over an hour and haven't gotten our 4th tasting. Meanwhile, the group were close to their last 7th tasting. While we all were seated at the bar, keep in mind that with the group next to us and the owner standing right in front of us, we had to keep waving him down and to get his attention to pour us our next tasting. After our 5th, we gave up and decided to leave. The wines weren't that great. Tasted wattered down. The owner gets offended if you didn't like one of the wines, and he tries hard to convince you with an excuse. Will never go back. And I wouldn't recommend this place at all. read more

Went to this winery last Saturday, we were the only guests when we arrived and the owner sat us down at the bar. Shortly after a group of 4 came in and they sat next to us. For the next hour the owner gave them all his attention and and didn't listen when I requested which wine I would like to taste instead giving me the same one my girlfriend asked for. Overall terrible service, took way too long to pour us our glasses, and didn't listen to what I requested. I do not recommend trying this place. read more

Stopped in for some wine tasting on Friday afternoon. Luckily we were the only customers as it was a little early, Around 1. We enjoyed a tasting and even got to sample a new wine they were working on at the moment. All was delicious! We left with 2 bottle of the 2015 Four Way. The service was excellent. The hostess was very kind and friendly. And so was the winemaker who gave us the preview taste. The yelp deal was well worth the money. We will be returning for sure! As we entered the winery's property, the fall kissed vineyard guided us gently down the cobblestone road to a barn style building covered in grape vines! I can not wait to experience this scenery in the spring! The sloped stairway led us into the grand tasting room. What a beautiful space for a private event!! Immediately it becomes clear it is harvest time and grapes are present. The virgin hues of fresh crushed wine hit my olfactory senses~ wich delivered a message right to my brain....I am ready to enjoy some wine!! This was an experience that is worth waiting for. There is limited seating and the waitlist can be long... Don gently takes you by the hand as you stroll through a food and wine pairing adventure. This is a worthwhile experience for all levels of wine conevesours. There were couples and small groups enjoying satisfying tastes accompanied by some of the best wine I have tasted. We live near the Rock Hill Winery and I am a member of their club. While we stop in for a tasting periodically, my wife and I attended our first "event" there this past Sunday. It was a dinner / wine pairing and it was fantastic. Don the owner is not only a great wine maker, he is also very well versed in associated facts and details which he can share in an articulate, interesting, informative manner. I now also know - based on this event - that both he and his wife are culinary wizards and can make nutritious, well presented, temptingly tasty cuisine. Both the food and the wines were delicious! We were served 7 courses with the appropriate wine with each to show how they complement each other. First we would try the wine without the food and then with ... to better differentiate the impact of the combination. The late afternoon progressed like this: 1) Fresh Pineapple / 2014 Muscato 2) Asparagus Wrapped with Prosciutto & Cream Cheese / 2015 Chardonnay 3) Brie Cheese with French Fig Jam on Baguette / 2015 Sangiovese 4) Jumbo Prawns with Butter & Garlic / 2014 Syrah 5) Creamy Dubliner Cheese / 2014 Estate Barbera 6) Choice Angus Tri tip, Yukon Potatoes with Sour Cream and Green Beans / 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon 7) Cheesecake Medley (Vanilla, Chocolate, Raspberry) / Lite Larboard The wine was poured very generously ... for willing takers ... but "not pushed" on anyone. This place's hours says it's open on Noon Sundays, so we drove out there. The sign on the gate at the road said open and it was swung wide open. We drove through a very obnoxious bumpy stone road to get to the winery - seriously, this thing will do damage to your struts and shocks in certain less-resilient types of vehicles. Never had to drive over such a stupid obstacle as this. Then we get there and the sign on the front entrance says "We are Closed." Very poor impression. We left. read more

My wife and I stopped in on a Friday, due to covid restrictions, the winery is only open for tastings on Saturday and Sunday. Luckily the owner, Don, was able to break away from working on an irrigation pump to visit with us and let us try 6 different bottles, he would have opened more, but my wife was already a bit tipsy, and I was the designated driver. This was my first time checking out a winery in the area, we just moved and I didn't realize there were wineries in the area! My fiancé purchased a Groupon deal for their wine pairing/dinner a few months ago and we finally had the opportunity to use it. We invited a few friends to join us and weren't sure what to expect, but we had a great time. Albeit we were the youngest people there, but Don-the owner and our host for the evening was entertaining and informative about wine, explaining each of the wines we tried as well as how they change the flavor of the food they were paired with. The wines were mostly good, I'm not a chardonnay fan and this evening didn't change my mind. The food was also pretty good, I think Don's wife is actually the one that prepares everything. My favorite wine we tasted and my favorite course was the dessert cheesecake trio with the Lite Larboard, which is essentially a "port" wine but since it wasn't made in Portugal they can't technically call it a port. Regardless, it was delicious! My second favorite was the brie, fig and baguette accompanied with the Syrah. The ladies helping Don were super sweet and friendly as well. They provide about 2, 2 ounce pours of each wine and we tried 7 different wines. Overall it was a good deal, well worth the money for the Groupon! read more

Sorry, took so long to post. We stopped in on July 6th. Walked in to this open area that looks like a wine storage area. Very nice but we were not sure if we came in wrong door. We followed the voices and found the tasting bar. From there it was awesome. Only two other couples when we arrived at bar area. We had a great time meeting new people. Wine and attention to detail in descriptions were great. They even brought out a small cheese plate for each couple which was really nice. We bought four bottles of wine to take home and a glass to walk around outside with. Lovely day. read more

Rock Hill Winery is tucked into rural Placer County just off Sierra College north of Loomis. The winery is surrounded by a decent vineyard with a very scenic vista. You first enter on a weird cobblestone driveway that may seem quaint, but is very bumpy almost to the point of annoyance. The main tasting room is easily accessed with paved parking and a nice exterior. Entering the barn, I was somewhat disoriented by a lack of signage and direction. The tasting bar is a U-Turn around the main office with a horseshoe shape and bar stools. On a late Sunday afternoon, the winery had several guests and only one person working. This made is very difficult to get served and keep his attention during the tasting. I have been to many wineries at many different levels of staffing and customer load, but this visit was very disappointing. The tasting menu was very generous with nearly 10 different wines, although the taste and quality were inconsistent. To be fair, I have yet to find a Placer County winery that appeals to my palate and several of the wine blends were interesting. Most of the reviews here are stellar which makes my experience different, but after visiting many other wineries, something is up. The grounds and facility are nice, but the service and quality are not consistent with the other wineries in the area. read more

For starters, I had no idea this place even existed, so kudos for them on opening up this winery operation surrounded by beautiful palm trees and views of rolling hills. The wine tasting attendant was quite lovely as well. So one star for exterior setting and one for customer service. Sadly, once I stepped inside the "tasting room" and tried the 10 different wines provided in the tasting, I couldn't include anything else to the "pro list" in visiting Rock Hill. The inside of the wine tasting room was just awkward. Dark, kind of smelly, no music with these make shift tables. I understand covid forces businesses to alter their seating arrangements, but I also shouldn't feel like I'm walking into someone's garage on accident for a winery experience? The wine, well, there was one red blend that was ok, but everything else was just confusing. The varietals were not like any I've tried before. Just a strange experience overall. read more

Had a great time with Don and his staff at their food and wine tasting. My girlfriend got us reservations with a deal from groupon and it was an absolute bargain considering the food and amount of wine you get. Don was an excellent host and very knowledgable. I also liked that it didnt feel very "pinkys up". They were a very welcoming group. To top it all off they had a surprise raffle and I won a free bottle of wine! I stopped in around 12:15 on a Friday afternoon and literally had to force myself away to make my 1:30 appointment. Don the owner/winemaker was engaging and kind. Incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. It was such a nice time chatting away and tasting wines with him. I was the first customer of the day and we walked into the cellar together and he selected today's bottles. Don continues to share info and suggestions thru the tasting and tons of stories. We even got a sneak peak/taste of some Sangiovese- just picked that morning and fermenting. Such a cool experience! If you're looking for a place where you can plow through the tasting menu and be on to the next-- this isn't for you. If you love wine and people who love wine- stop here. I loved the chard and the Pinot noir. I didn't taste everything yet but I'll be back. read more

When we walked into this place, it had a musty, sulfuric odor and I just knew I was going to hate this tasting. We only had 4 wineries to choose from in the area, so we saddled up to the bar and began our tasting! The wine tender was a sweet lady and began our journey into about 10 wines from their stock. Wouldn't have guessed that every single wine on their menu was fan-fucking-tastic!!! They all had this note that you could tell was the wine maker's signature flavor note..I can't place my finger on it but, I love it when I can tell that there's a theme to the winemaker's library. We left with several bottles including a Vino Blanco, White Rose & Tempranillo (which had ketchup notes...sounds horrible but it was great!). When we are ready to join another wine club, it will be with Rock Hill for sure! Impressive! But that stinky barn odor...whoo wee.. I dunno about that. read more

By far the best winery in the area! My wife and I have been wine tasting countless times, including many of the pretentious Napa valley wineries, and just couldn't get into wine...until we found this place! After stopping in here for tasting one weekend, we were instantly hooked and decided to become members. All of their wines are amazing, and the owners and staff are extremely generous. The pairing events are a must try as well. For what it would cost to eat at many chain restaurants, you get a night of gourmet food and excellent wines (nearly unlimited). Don, the owner, walks you through each tasting as you sample his wife's delicious bites ranging from prawns to prime rib to smoke salmon. If you hadn't got an idea of their generosity by what I previously stated, they are also offering personally delivering wine to club members during the pandemic. I can't recommend this place enough. I called Rock Hill to see if they were open and they were not. It was a Monday evening and I'm in town from Colorado on business. There was a television station on-site video taping an Interview of the owner. Not knowing me from Adam, Don said to stop by and he'd open a bottle of wine after the TV crew is finished. True to his word, Don gave me a tour of the winery and opened five or six bottles of wine. The wine was very good. He offered Pinot, Cab-Sangiovese, Cab-Zin, Cab Sauv, Grenache, and a late harvest white dessert wine. I think I forgot a wine or two. They were all very nice. I had the opportunity to sit with Don and learn the history of his winery and learn about wine. He has decades of expertise in wine making in the Sonoma region of CA and purchased this winery about 6 years ago. Don was very hospitable. I'm a lone straggler from out of state. He opened his business to me, showed me genuine hospitality and even provided crackers, cheese and meats to cleanse the palate. After trying his assortment of wine he closed up and thanked me for stopping by. Stated that I was a guest and that there was no charge! This is a classy operation. Don has a heart for winemaking. His wines are very good. Next stop I'm going to try his Carmenere and Bordeaux style blended reds. I really appreciate nice people who are passionate about their craft. Very fortunate to have stumbled upon this gem of a winery. read more

I'm a local resident and have been to Rock Hill before but last night really just stood out. I drive by this winery every day. It is an adorable setting tucked into a hill in the perfect town of Loomis. Placer County actually has a handful of great wineries and this is one to add to the list. A few friends were lucky enough to get to end 3 hours last night enjoying a wine and food pairing event at Rock Hill and to be honest I was not sure what to expect when we walked in. It was an intimate setting with about 20 people. WE all went around the table an introduced ourselves. Don, the owner already was entertain us with great stories and history of wine making. But the best part was that he was not talking at us... he was engaging and spoke with us. We got out of our seats and took a 5-7 minute tour of the grounds... nothing too long but just enough to get aquatinted with the place. (side note: I cannot wait to come back this summer and enjoy the summer concerts on the lawn at the amphitheater). Back at our seats we start off with a Rose (as Don fully explains about the wine.... we really learned so much which I absolutely loved) and fresh pineapple. He has us try the wine before the food and then again after to see the real difference in taste. We went though 5 other courses with wine and then desert and a port like wine (he even explained how true wine expert look and taste wine when rating them on the point scale. We all experimented on our own.) His daughter was there helping with all of the food and wine serving (and we really could have as many tastes of whatever wine we like... they did not hold back). And his amazing wife was the master behind the fantastic food. I cannot say enough about the food. It was truly mouth watering. I really was impressed as the food was honestly outstanding. All in all this was a wonderful night. There was not one point in the evening that someone tried to sell us. We actually had to ask what the wine club membership entailed as we wanted to join. It was such a low pressure night... you really felt like you were part of their family. There is so much going on at this place you really have to check it out for yourself. Don, the owner is so knowledgeable and his family is very welcoming. The wine is great and the events they have are fantastic. Located in Loomis. Directions can be difficult to follow going the back way. Lots of parking. Rock paved driveway leading in. There was plenty of staff walking around to direct wine tasters around to bar. Narrow areas behind the bar chairs but manageable. Not sure if there was a tasting fee. Tasting was like 10 wines made throughout California. They have sister vineyards around. Stephanie was working and greeted us. Provided a menu, pen, and glasses. She informed us some happenings including a meal pairing event with extra food was going on at the same time. It allowed us to try actual food with wine. A different perspective. She provided they have pairing events frequently. Staff including Stephanie were well versed on the wines. Food pairing items vary for event. Some food we had include pastrami wrapped cheese asparagus, cheese n crackers, and potato quiche. Food was hot and matched well with the wine. We tried all the wines. There selection include but not limited to a Chardonnay, Rose, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Four Way blend. There was something for everybody. Most of the wines we enjoyed. We ended up purchasing the blend (Barbera, Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, and Cab). Blend was a good sweetness, berry hints, subtle bite. Good: service, food, and most wines. Bad: maps can get you lost looking. Plan ahead. Worth additional visits. read more

This place wasn't open when we arrived but the owner was nice enough to give us a tour and some wine samples. It was a very cool experience tasting wine out if the barrels rather than the bottle. In order to buy any wine we actually got to bottle and cork it ourselves. That experience in itself makes this place my favorite winery on the auburn wine trail. read more
