Food, service and tv plus nice set up made our stop in Soledad to charge car a nice break. The steak nachos and steak sandwich were the hit with our crew. Salads were big and look nicely done. We saw they made homemade salsa so we had to try it. Chef made us homemade chips with it and we all loved it. Spicy good salsa and great chips. Drinks were reasonable - 24 ounce specialty brewery beers and local wine add a nice local touch. With so many fast food, this was a good spot and very nice service team. Will be back! read more

Really good food and love weekends with seafood items. I've only ever had 1 bad thing there and it was a hamburger which had too much pepper or something and it made the meat taste bad. Even replacing the hamburger was the same. I wouldn't make that a deciding factor to not eat there. read more

This little restaurant has been here for a long time. It's right off Hwy 101 so is accessible to travelers and locals alike, and there's easy parking nearby for large vehicles such as big rigs and RVs; the walk from said parking isn't far. You enter through a pair of double doors (the left side seems to be perpetually locked, though...), turn right, then enter through another door to be greeted by a host stand and dessert case. I haven't tried any of their desserts nor have I even glanced at the dessert case - mostly because I'm usually too full after a restaurant meal to have dessert. The restaurant is decorated in dark woods, paired with dark tables and chairs, and a dark carpet. It reminds me of an old club with lounge. There's a bar with alcohol; they clearly serve multiple kinds of alcoholic beverages from beer to wine to a little stronger offerings. Both the décor and bar contrasts uncomfortably with the diner feel of the serving staff and menu. The restaurant really needs to decide whether it's a lounge or a diner and stick with whichever it chooses. The hostess was pleasant. She showed us to our table after welcoming us. Our server brought us menus after we were seated. The server was nice but I wouldn't say she was very attentive. She mostly left us alone. Our meals were good but mine wasn't extraordinary. I got the chicken fried steak. I ordered my eggs over-medium and the yolks came out a tiny bit overcooked but still somewhat runny. The whites were nicely cooked, though. I asked for country potatoes but was given hash browns. I chose to overlook it but was disappointed when I discovered the hash browns were very bland. I had to add a lot of salt and some ketchup to make them taste good. The country gravy and the breading on the chicken fried steak were bland, as well. More salt and pepper added helped but they were still disappointing. I got lemonade to drink. It's nothing to write home about, just from a fountain. I would have expected something a little better than just fountain lemonade from a restaurant that looks like a fancy lounge, even if it acts like a diner. As I said before, our server mostly left us alone during our visit. She checked on us once after bringing our food to us, then didn't return at all. We had to get the attention of someone else to ask for our check. I don't know if she was on a break and the others failed to check on us or what the issue was, but it was very awkward. We waited about ten minutes after finishing eating before we had to get someone's attention to get the check. Overall, I don't know that I'd return here for breakfast. It wasn't busy, the food was only ok, and the service wasn't quite adequate. Giving three stars only because the service we did receive was pleasant. read more

Classic Diner with a Latin twist Remember those good old Northeastern Diners like the one in the 1982 film "Diner"? Well, The Windmill is not exactly one of those, but there is some resemblance. For example, they have a long counter where many of the locals hangout come breakfast time. Or the dinning area, although larger than your classic dinner's, is set up like one. Every time I go there, I am reminded of a couple of diners in Queens, NY where I used to when I was a college student. Well, The Windmill may resemble a NY diner, but the similarities are mostly superficial. At heart, the Windmill is a restaurant that serves good food with plenty of Latin/Mexican flavors. Most of my stops there have been during my hiking trips to Pinnacles National Park when I usually stay at the Valley Harvest Inn adjacent to the restaurant. And almost all of my meals there have been early morning breakfasts before I leave for the hike. The meals at the Windmill are tasty and come in large portions. I am told that many of the ingredients come from the local farms and/or ranches. I have had a couple of steaks there and I swear they tasted much better than average steak you get in the city, but that could be due to the fact that when you hike, you get hungry. And when you get hungry, everything tastes a lot better! I myself love all their breakfast items most of which I have tried over the last many years, but if you are an eggs/omelette kind of person, try something under the "Breakfast a la Mexicana" category. Any of those five are guaranteed to fill you up and keep you going until late afternoon when your hike is over and you are ready to head back to the motel! The people who work at the Windmill, young or old, boy or girl, tall or short, ...... all are very friendly and nice. I have never met a server in this place who did not do a fantastic job of getting me the meal I asked for, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. To top it all, the prices are very reasonable as well, so what are you waiting for?! read more

This restaurant, along Hwy 101 south of Salinas, has been around for a long time. I remember it from the 1960s. A really nice place, nothing fancy. Great, friendly service and servers. Like you are a guest in someone's house. All-American menu with a Latin flavor. You will certainly find something that will please you. You sit in booths and tables with the diner counter and kitchen ready-to-pick-up window along one wall. A banquet room is the place for Rotary, Lions and any other groups to meet and there is a larger room for parties and receptions. It is old, but clean. It may be a restaurant, but is serves as a center for Soledad activities. Burgers are good, Greek salad and other items are well done. Breakfasts are one of their best times, but people eat here throughout the day and evening. Always specials and an array of good desserts. Reasonable prices and endless coffee. A super stop while traveling. Kids present no obstacle, as it is a family place. I sure do like the retro feel, having grown up in the 1950s. read more

Came here yesterday for breakfast with my family as my daughter school was having a breakfast fundraiser for her 5th grade class. We got 2 windjammer breakfast which for me was 2 meals alone!! So much food but worth the price!! However I was disappointed in my eggs as I asked for over medium and got over easy. My daughter ended up getting some French toast, which sadly was slightly burnt. My son ended up getting the pesto chicken sandwich with fries, which was well worth the money according to my husband because it's like you got a whole baby chicken on our sandwich, that had a lot of flavor. The service sadly was lack luster. Maybe our waitress was new and just didn't know the ropes yet. She took our order and once it was done and she dropped it off that was the last we saw of her, until we finally flagged her down to bring our bill and to go boxes. The other waitress working was so on top it and remembered us from when our kids played baseball together many years ago, I wish we would've got her. However I won't let this one hiccup ruin me from coming back. read more

Ordered the "Windmill" burger for me and Greek Salad for my wife to go. I asked for a "side" of mustard because I like to dip my fries in mustard and put it on my burger. My biggest pet peeve when it comes to restaurants is cheaping out on condiments. The hostess assured me she put ketchup and mustard in the bag as I collected the bag from her. When I get to my hotel room and open the takeout bag, I discovered two tiny packets of mustard and ketchup. I'm so mad. Is mustard really that expensive? Maybe I should swing by the 99 cent store and then donate some mustard to this restaurant since they are too cheap to give me an actual side of mustard. It wasn't the greatest burger either and the fries seemed like they were from a frozen bag lacking salt. I ended up throwing away half the burger and pretty much all of the fries. My wife really liked her Greek salad. I'll admit it looked good. Good thing my wife read the description and caught the culinary error of putting bleu cheese in the Greek Salad. Needless to say, she asked to skip the bleu cheese. Little advise, Greek Salads have feta cheese and Kalamata olives not bleu cheese and black olives. The other ingredients looked really good and the fresh romaine lettuce was bright green. If it wasn't for the salad this place would get one star. I'm so, so irritated about the mustard. read more

I went for dinner around 6 pm. I ordered a 1/2 burger with fries. I asked for WELL DONE! My meal came and I looked at the meat and it was pink. :( I took it back to the counter as my waitress had not come to check on me. The burger had been cut in half when I got it. On the return, I piece was well-done, just as I wanted it. It appeared the original half still pink when I took a bite out of it wasn't done, they only did the first half! The waitress came and asked how it was. It said it was "better" (1 piece) but still not satisfactory. She offered to return it AGAIN and I decided not to. What's the point? To start off in all fairness, the staff is friendly and the owner Jose is a great guy... that being said this place in Soledad, CA used to be our go to spot, our family has always enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere, prices were fair and the quality of food was always flavorful, but this place has declined over time. My family was fortunate to have the ability to work during Covid and took our business to area local restaurants with the Windmill being one of the go-to spots helping Jose and the staff stay open and in business. Here's my downfall on today's visit.. as I looked at the menu, every item was way over priced, a cheeseburger $18 on up, pasta plate $25 on up, I wanted a club sandwich... $19 and up, I was speechless as I know food prices have started to come down a little bit and the owner shops at Costco as I do, but to keep prices that high in my opinion is gouging the consumer, I just didn't want to leave so I ordered the super Nachos for $20, handful of burnt chips, chicken was dry and tasted like left overs from prior night, hardly any beans and those were runny and couldn't find much cheese and what was there was watered down, asked the waitress for side of cheese and told her about the plate of Nachos, she apologized and got my side of cheese, when she brought it... it was bland. I expressed to the waitress my disappointment in quality of food as well as for the price I paid for what I got and she simply said.... sorry. I'm bummed because I really liked this place but can not afford meals at these crazy prices, sad that during Covid all the prices were fair and I was there to support... I wish my paycheck would go up that fast. Until the Windmill gets a hand on their menu prices and quality of food being served, guess it's back to Mc D's for a $10.00 cheeseburger. Everything we (4 of us) had was delicious and service by Mariana was excellent! We happened to get lucky by finding this place on Yelp and took a chance by stopping in! I personally had the Goldrush chicken entree, the others had the steak sandwich, the crispy chicken tenders salad, the loaded/broccoli baked potato, house salad, minestrone soup and the mozzarella sticks were all on point! My dinner was especially delicious with so many yummy flavors and the chicken was as tender as can be; no knife needed, the mashed potatoes and vegetable medley all made for a perfect dish! He continued to act in movies and on television until he passed away at age 85. Mickey had a funny secret that few people knew about. From time to time, he would get in his car and drive from Los Angeles to Daly City California (over 400 miles). He would end up at Lisa's Mexican Restaurant which is still located at 6582 Mission Street. When he came in, he was warmly greeted. He was shown to a special table reserved for him. He was served his favorite enchilada diner. Elena and I have been to this restaurant It is a true "hole in the wall" with great food and drinks. I have found my restaurant worth driving several hundred miles to eat a meal. We spent a three-day weekend in the small town of Soledad, California. There was not a big selection of restaurants. We decided to try The Windmill Restaurant. If you're looking for Asian food, this is not your venue. Soledad is a very Mexican-American town. If you're looking for a great Margarita, gin and tonic, bloody Mary, etc., this is not a venue for you. Only great beers and superb Soledad wines are on the drink menu. I ordered a shrimp dish. Elena ordered pasta. Both meals were stunning. Our server was quite friendly and attentive. We liked the food so much that we came back Saturday night after Elena had done an arduous hike in Pinnacles National Park. The restaurant was packed with happy customers. We both ordered fish and chips. In addition, I ordered a shrimp cocktail. I expected to see a glass arrive with six large shrimp in it. Instead, a large goblet arrived. It was filled with a chilled stew including the shrimp. It was the best shrimp cocktail that I have eaten in 73 years of my life. The fish and chips that followed were stunning and without equal. The final bill was reasonable. If I "drop off the radar for a day or two," you can bet that I drove a couple of hundred miles south to The Windmill Restaurant. read more

While driving south from San Jose, California we stop here for lunch and to stretch. Nicer than the average hole-in-the-wall restaurant. This place had good services, clean bathrooms, simple yet classic decor, and good food. The bread served with the salads was my favorite. Not sure how it is a season, but it was soft, yet light crunchy and not too filling. read more
