CHECK YOUR BILL THOROUGHLY AT THIS PLACE. The Windmill lost a long time costumer today. I was charged 92 dollars for a Chinese chicken salad, a citrus salad, pesto pasta and two drinks. When we asked the waitress about the amount she said that with sales tax and a take out fee the amount was correct so we paid the bill without much fuss. When we got in our car we ended up calculating our meals out of curiosity and we realized we were over charged almost 40 dollars! We debated for awhile if we should go back and say something. Normally we are very non-confrontational but 40 dollars is a large sum to be overcharged. When we went back inside to ask for more clarification they ended up saying that we were charged for and extra salad. They reimbursed us 15.25 dollars for the "extra salad" with no apologies whatsoever. 15.25...........when we were overcharged almost 40! Make it make sense. read more

If I could give it 0 stars I would. Absolutely horrendous food with even more outrageous prices. I got a full rack of ribs around a week ago, completely cold and moldy . Not living up to the "fresh food" as they advertise. The menus all have different pieces so make sure to ask before hand. A lot of false advertisement around the establishment, with over charging. Especially with the beer (white claws, bottled beer). I called the restaurant multiple times to speak with management but apparently he chooses when to come in, sounds unprofessional to me. After being reassured for a call back, it's yet to come. All the charges have already gone through on my card but it's a constant recurrent with this restaurant. What a pleasant surprise! We pulled off the 101 to get a bite and gas and decided to try this place for breakfast. It doesn't look great from the outside but the inside decor is cute and the breakfast is excellent. They have both traditional and Mexican breakfast options. We were celebrating my friend BDAY, and the waitress was friendly. The food is a bit overpriced, and what I ordered was the southern Dinner which is Country fried steak and That meal was good. The dinner salad had no cheese, no croutons and it was just plain not so good. We also had the sampler platter which contained onion ring, hot wings and mozzarella sticks. I was served, I hope accidentally, a new york steak instead of a ribeye (the lunch specials were all new york steaks). So hungry I fell to without noticing, however didn't eat much, since it was lean and overcooked. It was clearly most of a new york steak that was left, and I found myself in a most ridiculous argument. The waitress claimed not to be able to tell, and the boss, who did not come to me, had to approach him myself, describe the difference so he knew that I knew (from Montana-butchered many large animals), actually brought out a ribeye, which was clearly not what was on my plate, and make up some similarities. Never so much disrespect at a restaurant, not the dirtiest hole. All I wanted was to be charged correctly. Every dollar counts on the road, and in my case, calories. I needed protein and fat badly that day. I can gobble up a 12oz ribeye, but barely choke down a lean new york. And the pie looked good, but didn't dare order anything more. I was flabbergasted, and starting to be amused and admiring of the tenacity and farce. I paid ribeye price and tipped 20 percent. read more

I like this place for its salads and burgers. I tried the new Greek salad...good vegetables, but they should have used artichoke hearts in water, not vinegar. I love artichoke hearts, but the dressing had vinegar and the artichokes about killed my tastebuds! I extracted all of the a.h.s and it was a VERY good salad. The Windmill....where do I start? Vibe - If you come here you have to remember you are in Soledad and not a 5-star steak house in the City. The waitresses are very kind and helpful. The hand-full of times I've been here it has been the same two girls severing. This place is full of regulars, however, they treated my group like regulars the first time we ate here. The restaurant is kept clean and I don't understand all the reviews saying it is dirty here, unless they clean it right before I show up every time (Which I Doubt). Food - Tasty is an understatement! I have tried their Burgers, Steak sandwich and steak & egg special. I have eyed other customers plates, and the pasta dishes and salads look just as tasty. The prices and portions are very fair. Overall - This place is not a place I'd take my date for Valentines or any other special occasion. If you are female or male and your date takes you here for Valentines, I would be reviewing my date not the restaurant. If you want a tasty, well priced meal for lunch I'd highly recommend this place. read more

We were passing through Soledad on our way down to LA and stopped in for lunch at The Windmill. The food is pretty much what you might expect. I kept it simple with a veggie burger and it was pretty good. It's amazing how many places manage to screw up a veggie burger for some unknown reason. On a Saturday night drive home from Pismo Beach to San Francisco, we found The Windmill the perfect spot for a comfort meal that would fill us up for the road ahead. You don't expect -- or need -- bells and whistles in Soledad, and you don't get them at The Windmill. What you get is a nice meal with fresh ingredients and generous portions. I was pleasantly surprised to find that if you're health-conscious and want to avoid fatty foods, there's something at this place for you. Plus, the service was fast and friendly, so we were able to get back on the road quickly. Our party of two adults and an 8-year-old kid more than sated our appetites for less than $25 (we did not have any alcoholic drinks). Two nights before we had to wait 45 minutes at Pismo Beach's ballyhooed Cracked Crab and wound up spending $140 (tip included). Guess which meal we were most pleased with. This is not to suggest The Windmill is a destination spot. But if you're in the vicinity and in search of a solid meal, this place gets our hearty endorsement. read more

Hometown favorite ! A must when coming thru Soledad. The servers are friendly and you usually get seated immediately. WIDE variety and style of food to choose from. Can't go wrong with any of the salads which all have fresh produce from around our county. (Home grown! ) My favorites here are the salads and omelettes. Every now and the the service can be spotty. Once my husband and I went and were seated on a far corner of the restaurant on a busy night. It took quite some time for our food and drinks to come out and the follow up was not great. Ended up having cold soup. This was once in the countless amounts of times we've been coming here; however, doesn't mean it can't happen again. Will continue to keep coming to this local favorite. I've eaten here twice and both times the food was good as well as the service. The first time we came for breakfast. My husband and I both ordered an omelette. They were both chock full of vegetables, but prepared a little differently than others we've tasted . It seemed they had steamed the vegetables but this didn't bother me as I love my veggies. The potatoes were good. The next time we came was for dinner and I ordered a salad and my husband had the pasta. The salad was fresh, crisp and delicious, however, very small. Although I enjoyed it I don't feel it was worth the price. The pasta was very good. If you're in Soledad and want to opt out of the chain Denny's than this is a better choice. read more

This is a very small town, no frills. We stayed here to check out Pinnacles National Park. After a long day of driving and exploring caves in the rain we were all starving! The Windmill hit the spot! We recently stayed at the Valley Harvest Inn, which adjoins the Windmill (see also our review of that establishment), and had dinner and breakfast at the Windmill. We were very happy with the food and the service. The Windmill is a pleasant, no-frills, folksy place with a full bar. The portions are large and the food is fresh and good (this is from two jaded Bay Area denizens, mind you). I was really impressed with the size and variety of the menu offerings. He had chicken tenders and I had a great burger, and we shared a lovely salad with citrus, apples, nuts, and blue cheese and blackberry pie a la mode for dessert. They have a modest wine list. I noticed when we were there that they were advertising all-you-can-eat ribs for $13.95 (whoa-bargain!), and they smelled delicious. We take a lot of little trips up and down the coast and are always on the lookout for good dining/lodging that's not terribly expensive. Valley Harvest Inn and the Windmill fit the bill perfectly. We're very happy to have found them, and we'll be back. read more

Not too bad for a small town. We ate here the morning we were leaving after staying at the Valley Harvest Inn. Better than their chincy continental breakfast. I got the sausage and eggs with sourdough toast. Hash browns were good, needed ketchup with everything! Good portions for the price, did the trick. Food is decent but the service was horrible . 15 minutes from when I was seated till a waiter acknowledged my presence. When she did arrive she seemed to be in a hurry like I was wasting her time. I never seen her again as the manager served me my food. After that, not a single visit from anyone. I finished my food and had to go to the register to get my check. I was greeted at the register by the manager , she asked me if I was ready for my check. I would have loved to drink a few beers on tap but since there were no waiters around with only guest at three tables I paid for my bill and left. I usually tip 20% with the exception of tonight. So I've been a long customer here along with my family and friends that go here all the time and honestly most of their meals are ok. However , I just had to let people know about their blackened chicken . First time , it had a Alfredo taste to it , I didn't complain nor call to express my feelings because I was trying to be compassionate, maybe they were short staff or maybe the cook wasn't having a good day. Either way I let it go . Second time around I did mention my experience and in hopes that this can get related to the cook when cooking the sauce . Not too mention this is a $70 1/2 family tray in which they almost force you to get the salad and bread too because if you don't it will still be the same price. After , I waiting an hour for the tray I just had to call to express how awful the pasta tasted . It was way too saucy and the sauce was sweet and tasted like alfredo sweet sauce . I called to speak to the manager when the actual cook that cooked my food answered the phone to he went on how his food was good and nothing was wrong with it. the manger was not professional as I never got a call back from him after leaving messages to call me back . Driving home from LA and already passing the spots like Solvang we were fast approaching Soledad. All my husband and I could think of was, "Isn't there a prison out here?" Anyway, we found a total of 4 yelp reviews for this place that were pretty good. We took our chances with our 4 and 6 year olds and walked in at 9:30 that night. It was truly great! My husband had some sort of tender steak with mushrooms and I had the spinach ravioli. Both were superb. We brought in our own wine for a corkage of $8. The kids had burgers and fries. Service was friendly. The only thing that was annoying was the bus boy literally sweeping the carpet floor right by our table. Obviously they were getting ready to close but this is a major pet peeve of mine. The waitress couldn't have been more adorable and sweet. It's definitely a family place and casual. I would imagine is probably busier than the time we were in but all in all, great value and tasty. read more

We are locals and eat here all the time. I am in the local Rotary Club that meets here Thurs at 12pm, every week. I know the owner and consider him a friend as well as one of the lead waitresses. Here is my non biased opinion. The food is of good quality, but over priced a tad. The restaurant is ALWAYS clean, and the servers (especially Adrianna) is sweet, efficient, and worth the tips. Ok maybe I'm biased about the servers, because Adrianna serves Rotary Club and does a fantastic job. The food, most days is good. Especially if your eating something easy like a delish salad, burger, or sand which. I personally do not like a lot of the dinners, with the exception of the Chicken Scallopini which is to die for. It's that good. I didn't care for the fried chicken, it is overbreaded. But my chicken is great, thus anyone's suffers in comparison. Should you eat here? Y E S! It's a great diner like atmosphere and definitely higher quality than Denny's and fast food. Try the California Burger, Chicken Scallopini, or the Crunchy Chicken Salad.
