Disclaimer; I would've given 4 stars, if it wasn't for the following: We came during a Sunday (happy hour all day) and ordering three things specifically because they were on happy hour - Fried Brussels Sprouts, Moscow Mule, and the Pint House Margarita. We were charged full price for all three. Not a huge deal, I asked the bartender about it and he gave me $5 cash back. Cool. We also ordered some food - Chez Manny burger and the Southern Fried Chicken. When the burger came out, it didn't have anything on it that the Chex Manny described. No goat cheese, arugula, or pickled onion. That's what my lady ordered, so that's what she should get, right? I went back to the kitchen with her plate, told them about it and they took the plate to fix it, no words exchanged. I waited about 10 min outside the kitchen to get the "fixed" burger, when my lady texts me to say they brought her fixed burger 5 mins ago. Glad we got it corrected, but it was not fun to waste our time on simple stuff without a word being said. I'll come back again, but please, make sure the staff know what is what. Cheers. read more

Came here on a Sunday and it was awesome. Not too crowded, but not dead either. I was hoping the basketball game would be on but they didn't seem to have any TVs but it was all good. I was really intrigued by the pork belly donuts but decided to skip them and try them on a future visit. The bottomless mimosas are only $12.50 (with food purchase) and they are seriously bottomless- my glass was always refilled quickly without asking. Got the biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon and it was awesome. Huge home made biscuits plus creamy sausage gravy. The potatoes on the side were nicely seasoned and crispy- it is sad how many places mess up breakfast potatoes and make them either bland or soggy, but these were great. The bacon was alright- nothing too noteworthy but its bacon so nothing to complain about either. My small complaints would be that after a while, the food did get on the salty side and the sausage gravy had a little too much pepper for my taste. But overall, an awesome spot. Their menu during the week looks equally interesting and they have a nice cocktails list plus daily specials AND 15 beers on tap! There's even a separate craft beer bar (that was closed on Sunday I think). I am sure I will be back for brunch, and maybe during the week as well. Overall a good spot with solid drinks and a great menu. read more

I got the Drunk Happy Meal and it was a delight!! Wagyu Beef Cheeseburger, fries, toy, a little lolly - and duh, a PBR + shot of either tequila or whiskey. It is totally worth it for $22.95. Service was pretty quick. It was a Saturday night and not busy at all. Lots of outdoor seating and found a parking spot easily. read more

3.75 Walked in, friends were nowhere to be found. Walked toward the bar and noticed another room on my left. Oh hey. Very dive bar-esque. There were tools and ladders, and bags all over the place. While we were looking through the menu, a gentleman was hanging up a frame while two ladies watched him making sure it was properly hung. Uhh, should we be here? Surprisingly, they have 805, woot. While we waited for the pool table to open up, we decided to rummage through the old board games stored on the shelves along the walls. After dominating in scrabble, woot, the pool table finally opened up. After dominating in pool, woot, we decided to play one more game before heading out. Y'all will NOT believe what happened. Ive probably been here like ten times at this point and on sunday at 7pm, I walked in and the bartender immediately told me no as soon as i walked in. I thought it was really weird and just left. I was not being belligerent or combative. How about offering me a water and not serving me a drink if you thought I was too drunk? Im not exaggerating when I say he literally followed us blocks away to confront us because my friend flicked him him off for being a racist (Im asian). GUYS. The bartender literally left his job to confront us on the street. Im speechless and actually embarrassed for him. I can't believe that happened. I feel like the bartender was just looking for a fight. And he tried insulting my friends sweater for some reason...? I don't think Ive ever encountered such an emotionally unstable bartender. read more

I've been to The Willows many times -- pretty standard bar with good food, but the bartender working at 7pm 03.20.22 changed my perception of this establishment. We walked into the bar and my friend was immediately denied service. We were not belligerent or disruptive, we literally just walked into the bar and were immediately denied service. The denial of service felt racially motivated (towards my friend) and I confronted the bartender about this. After we exchanged some colorful vocabulary, we respected his decision not to serve us and left the bar. The bartender then chased us outside to accost us on the street, clearly looking for a fight, talking about the clothes I was wearing -- being petty and immature. This person is a liability for the establishment and should have his employment evaluated for harassment. I've never seen this kind of behavior from bar staff and from the reviews, it looks like we are not the only people this bartender mistreated. read more

The Willows now has the distinction of having San Francisco's meanest bar tender. I went to order some lunch with my two daughters, after having walked for some time trying to find a place to eat in the area. This was on Saturday 10/9/21 at about 4 pm. After checking if this was the correct place to make an order, I asked the black haired lady who was behind the bar if she had a slushy or any other drink for children, I received a curt answer of "no". OK, we were hungry so took a look at the menu for food. My younger daughter, 8 years old, was to short to see the menu on the bar top (and also tired from walking), so climbed to sit on the stool to see better. For a short while, we were happy having found a place open with food. Then, before we could finish looking and order, this black haired lady scolded my daughter, she had to "get off the stool". It did not matter that my daughter was just a customer who wanted to order food (after being told this was the place to order), she had to get back right away. Now, some here in S.F. may think it's cool to treat children this way, and believe in the excuse that there is some law that you can't order food at the order area sitting on a stool (there is not) -- however I think this smacks of something else. Yet another establishment and lady who thinks they can get away treating the most vulnerable class of San Franciscan's anyway they like. Maybe you can not treat the pantless men this way in S.F. (who happened to be right around the corner this day) --but kids? In S.F., they are free game, so many adults see them as just getting in the way -- but for me, this gives The Willow's the distinction of having "Meanest Bartender in San Francisco", for treating little girls like nothings, throwing them out hungry just for wanting to sit a moment to make an order. Most reading this will think it's nothing, I beg to differ. Time to start standing up for our little ones who have had their lives interrupted by so many COVID measures and other mandates that put children at the back, our smallest citizens who are frequently abused, and rarely listened to. Please say no to The Willows treatment of children, and if anybody who cares a little about the dignity of children and knows this Black Haired Bartender, please tell her you read this yelp review, and that you agree, she is "Meanest Bartender in San Francisco" to effectively throw a little girl out for just trying to make an order. And I wonder, does this mean bartender remember when she was little, can she be so blind to the "meanie" that she has now become?? read more

You know, there are some reviews on here that try and talk down about some of the staff. I come here, from out of town, over 200 miles away from here, and this is my goto stop when I come to see my cousins and friends. I have sat here for 12+ hours, eating and drinking and never once saw any rudeness from staff that was not deserved. The cook Manny, he is worth his weight in gold!!!! The food is outstanding!!! Josh has a great attitude and tries to get along with everyone. Even those that are trying to be disruptive. I will continue to spend my visiting days here. Live the vibe. Quiz night Wednesdays: this pub has regular weekday events such as pub quiz Wednesday's as well as live DJ thursdays. First time here with a friend, it's a very casual almost dive-y bar for reasonably priced after work drinks: lots of craft beers and even whiskeys, but I don't see any wines which is my normal booze of choice. My long time customer friend mentioned that the bartender is one of the least friendliest he has encountered in town. But he still comes back so I guess service is not bad enough to deter him. Pub quizzes can get a bit noisy. The quiz master Steve tends to drag the night on especially after first two rounds, more drinks to be had... We ordered a patty melt, which was not bad although a bit greasy. Food here seems to be pretty average pub grub. 2 Stars as I didn't find the place very comfortable with bad service and a rather rowdy crowd, but if you're looking for a casual dive bar and don't mind the noise, it could be more enjoyable...perhaps I just didn't drink enough! read more

We came here for a company lunch at around 12pm on a Tuesday. The place was pretty empty and we were able to find a large table for everyone to seat. The waitress was friendly and got us menus and water quickly. I must say the food was surprisingly delicious! I had a Grilled Chicken Breast Burger ($10.75). I added a slice of Swiss cheese and a fried egg for a dollar each. The chicken was tender and had a nice Smokey flavor. The buns were huge but they were soft and fluffy. I also tried some of the Brussels Sprouts ($7.75). They were not stingy with the portion size. Some fancy places would give you tiny pieces of brussels sprouts and all you can taste is how charred they are. However, not here and I loved it! We are thinking of coming back here and try The Drunk & Happy Meal, which comes with a burger, fries, a pint of beer, a shot, and a toy! Lol read more

They hate Asians! My white husband and I'm Asian sat there for 30 minutes and they were not crowded waiting for any kind of service. When we sat there were 6 empty tables and by the time I looked around those tables were filled and they had their waters etc while we were still waiting for a hello. While other tables were getting water etc... they looked at us waving and didn't serve us at all.. I say Asian haters. read more

This second review is for brunch. While the Willows is great for beer, it's really not that great for food. I stopped by with a friend and got the carne asada scramble. Let's just say the food was underwhelming and that the eggs were over cooked and bland. I paid extra for guacamole and they gave like a tablespoon of it - totally not worth the price. I feel like I could probably do better myself... I think the Willows are great for hanging out with friends but don't be expecting too much on the food. read more

On the cusp of the SOMA before heading into the mission The Willows is a great spot to get a shot, a beer, and a damn good burger. With patty options from waygu beef to a vegan black bean patty with a vegan bun they have food for everyone. My last visit here I came in for a late lunch. Josh, the bartender behind their main bar. He was more than knowledgeable about their food menu as well as his spirits. I was impressed with how he balanced his customer service at the bar while also serving the seated table efficiently. Really fun bar with DJ, two rooms/bars, pool table, and a board game selection. I came here with a large group of friends on a Friday night and had awesome time. I can't speak about eating in this place because we always order it to go as we work nearby. The burgers are actually really tasty. That's what the two stars are for... however, the orders are always without fail wrong in some way. Ignoring special instructions like "no mayo", completely forgetting entire items, etc. Every. Single. Time. And pricey as hell... Maybe if you eat in the restaurant it would be different, if I ever do I'll (hopefully) update with another star for great service! Really tasty though! **update** Same shit. Tonight, not only did they forget the bacon on our bacon cheeseburgers, but also the lettuce, tomatoes, onions, condiments, you know... all the stuff that usually goes with a burger. Cool bar with surprisingly yummy brunch! My friends & I visited here when we were looking for a brunch place to hit up before the Dubz art exhibit. A bar that hosts brunch, who knew! We started our meal with bottomless mimosas. The waiters/bartenders were quick to refill your glass when it starts to get empty. Appreciated that! The food itself took a while to come out but it did not disappoint. I ordered the biscuits & gravy and added bacon on the side. You have to hit a $10 minimum on food to get the bottomless mimosa deal. So adding the bacon took my meal right above $10. I believe the biscuits are made in house. They were warm, fluffy & delicious!! The gravy was also really good. The only con was the potatoes were a little burnt, but still edible! From what I can tell, it had good flavor. Overall, I'm happy I stumbled upon this place. Will definitely come back & visit whenever I'm in the area! read more

Ive been comming to this address for food fun and drinks since it was the original Hamberger Mary's in 1988. I moved back to South of Market 3 years ago and it is now The Willows. the brunch is always great as well as the burgers. the service has been quite good and even fantasic on most days...except for tuesdays. that is the day of the week i would avoid normaly however i do forget once in a while then I am reminded as soon as I walk in to order my food. the guy behind the bar on tuesdays is called Josh. my experience with him over the years has not been fun or pleasent ever. he consistently seems upset or angry to be there.I usually ignore his unfriendly/unwelcomly demeanor. today i invited a friend to join me for her first time. as usual Josh was unfriendly and not pleasant and curt. small talk is not his thing.I said hello and asked how his day was going his reply was "ok...what can I get you?" after ordering our food we sat outside and soon our food came Josh dropped off the food to our table with out saying a word and as he was walking away I asked if he could bring some mayo please. his reply as he is almost at the door in a curt and irritated tone "next time tell me when you order your food instead when Im already out here bringing your food". my friend asked me was he being for real? wow! im pretty sure this is not the first time The Willows have heard about this guys attitude problem. All of the other servers are always wonderful warm and friendly and im sure Josh has that abillity in him... i just dont experence that with him.I will just need to remind myself and my friends not to go on Tuesdays. read more

#7 I had such a great time at the Willows! My friend and I were in the city visiting a BFF of mine, David, and we were all super hungry. David suggested the Willows, I love it, but my other friend had not been before--but he was hungry and really did not care, "Just feed me," he said. We walked one block to the tavern. They were really crowded but we found three unoccupied stools. The bartender came right over to greet us, placing bev naps in front of us and offering beverages, starters, etc. He also handed us some food menus so we could figure out how to solve our hunger problem while we waited for our drinks. I decided on a black bean burger--one of the BEST I have ever had! David grabbed a basket of salt and pepper fries and our other friend ordered some mozzarella sticks. The black bean burger was so delicious, and every bite was exquisite. (I am getting hungry right now thinking about it!). It was served with a tiny little salad on the side which complimented the burger perfectly. The salt and pepper fries were crispy and amazing. Sometimes, a huge basket of fries is kinda good, some burned and some soggy--not at the Willows--every fry was crispy, salty and peppery...yummie! The fried mozzarella sticks were terrific as well. Crispy and full of melted mozzarella. They were exceptionally large for cheese sticks too. Needless to say, after all that food we were extremely full, almost to the point of being uncomfortable! We played Trivia Crack at the bar and while there is no reason to embarrass anyone--I killed it!!! The service was wonderful. The food was marvelous. The drinks were great. No complaints whatsoever. We had a really great time just visiting and playing games. Stephani Smiles for The Willows ;) read more

Came here with a friend who works in the area. It's a short walk from the Van Ness Muni station which is nice. I'm definitely not a big weekday drinker but they have some nice beers and ciders on tap. As decorations they've got some of their beer tap handles on the wall - it's pretty cool. We ended up sharing a plate of carne asada fries which I haven't had in months. I always try and get some when I go home to SoCal but have rarely found them up here. Regardless they were decent. Obviously not the best I've ever had but then again how can you really mess up on carne asada fries. Protip: the entrance is on the Folsom side. Come here for the drinks! (Great Draft selection) Settle in here for the food! (Those fried brussel sprouts...mmmm) Stay here for Trivia Nights on Wednesdays! (May the best team prevail!) -------------- There are a few vegetarian options I saw on the menu, but did not inquire whethere they were vegan-friendly or not. It's a pretty large space, but seats get filled up quickly and can be hard to find a place to sit down. Bartenders are friendly & awesome. As for Trivia? Our team started out strong with a 1st Place standing after the first 2 rounds. We were doing really well and feeling like winners until we got to the section on Women's History. Those were some obscure questions! I know some of you guys are cheating and using Google. There's no way you can score 8/8 on so many roungs. Come for drinks and food during happy hour, sticking around to participate in trivia is questionable. Per a recommendation of a co-worker, a group of four headed to The Willows after work on Wednesday. On our minds? Beer, a stiff cocktail, and non-healthy food. The Willows meets all of these requirements AND plays some pretty awesome music while you wait. The good: + Two bars! One serving craft beer and another with the hard stuff. + Fried mac 'n' cheese balls - way better than the stuff you have at TGI Friday's! + Mix 'n' match sliders, go for the fried chicken. + Comfy seating, good for smaller groups. + Pool table and board games handy for those who need to be entertained. Not so good: + Trivia - we were temped to stick around and give it a go, as the four of us were truly intrigued. Not terribly impressed with the questions, the other players, and how it's managed. And no, we're not hardcore trivia buffs by any means, just like to play a fair game with a host who doesn't seem so scattered. A warm and friendly little gathering spot in SoMa. I stopped in for an evening of booze, burgers and brains (trivia) with some co-workers and was overall very impressed. What excited me the most was two-fold. First, the separate bar specializing in craft beers featured a fantastic selection, making for some satisfactory head nods with every new brew I ordered. Second, I love their menu, which had me salivating before ever trying the food. I settled on a DIY burger which comes with lettuce, vine ripe tomato, pickles and mayo. I added some cheddar and caramelized onions. For some reason I thought this would be just another bar where the menu was too clever and health-oriented for its own good, but the burger, like everything else, was clearly designed for someone who loves flavor over concerns about getting fat. The only downside was the service. We sat at our table for what must have been 30 minutes before figuring out ourselves that our orders must be placed at the bar. The waiter pretty much ignored us except when bringing out food, and even then he had no idea who ordered what. I ordered my burger with the salt and pepper fries but got regular ones, though they were still damn tasty. Tip: Be sure to stop in for trivia Wednesday nights after 7 pm. I visited The Willows on a night out with the guys for our monthly dinner and had high hopes for the food and drinks here based upon what I had been reading on Yelp. Unfortunately The Willows was a disappointment on pretty much all fronts, and it wasn't until I checked my credit card statement that I realized how shady the bartenders here can be. I bought a round of drinks for myself and the guys and instead of being charged for 3 drinks, I was charged for 5. I complained and they fixed the problem, but ended up increasing their tip (one they didn't deserve in the first place) by 50%. At $12/drink, these were the least special cocktails I've ever had and I will definitely not be back. The bartender I dealt will was a total jerk and I would be wary of using your credit card here. Check your statement and make sure you weren't overcharged! The food is very much overrated and there's not a whole lot to say about their bacon donuts, burgers, or any other menu item except that it's way overpriced and overrated. When coming into the willows today, I sat at the bar and immediately was met with a tipsy man next to me leaning over me arguing with the bartender because he wanted to be a high roller and buy some drinks and food for other customers, and the bartender didn't run them out fast enough. He was in the process of serving another patrons, including myself. Despite this man doing his best to get a rise out of the bartender, he kept his cool, brought him his check, and spent the rest of our time there being personable and timely.
