Whistle Stop was a great, late night option in Indianapolis. My friends had come to pick me up from the Indianapolis airport and we wanted to stay in the city to eat dinner. There were not too many late night places open, but we were referred to the Whistle Stop by a neighboring restaurant. It is a small town bar vibe, with the music at a moderate volume at the front. There are also games, including arcade games like Pacman as well as board games to enjoy while waiting on the food. I got the brisket mac and cheese, which was topped with barbecue and white sauce. The meat was juicy and tender, while the mac and cheese was cheesy and flavorful. Service was also quick, and the waiter was very attentive to our table. AWFUL service! Came in before the concert last night at a table. Server literally walked past us 8 times without even saying hi. My friend had to go to the bar to ask them to tell to make her wait on us. 2 of us had to leave by this time for the concert having never been waited on. Mind you we were there for 40 mins. Came back after the concert to grab the shirt I left & again sat at a table to try to get food. Again about 5 times she went by us with us even saying excuse us & she never stopped. 30 mins later we left again without even being waited on or greeted by her. She seemed to only seemed to be able to handle one table at a table. There's only like 8 tables back there. I STRONGLY encourage you to NEVER schedule you around an event. I've been here a couple times, on different days, and it's never been too busy. The service can be hit or miss, but the food is great for bar food and the drinks aren't super expensive. It's very dark inside and has different levels of seating areas, but we always like to sit by the front window and people watch. The pizza rolls are such an amazing find- reminds me of my childhood, but are elevated to be even better. The brisket fries are insane. So much food! They have the gooey, melty cheese that you want on top of loaded fries. The fact that they are waffle fries and not regular fries really kicks them up a notch and allows the toppings to get into every nook and cranny for the perfect bite. Part of our group will also always get wings, but I didn't remember to take a picture. They are perfectly crispy and really flavorful, so I recommend those as well! This is just a short walk from Gainbridge and is open late, so I recommend The Whistle Stop as a ~pit stop~ for a snack and one more drink before ending your night if you went to a game or event! read more

This is a great bar just south of downtown Indy. They have an incredible bourbon selection, great drink prices, and high quality bar food. It's got very cool "dive bar" aesthetics inside, too. Came here from out of town after the convention center at 930pm on a Saturday with wife and two teenagers due to a lack of other available options. It probably wasn't the best move taking 15 year olds to a bar, but we were starving from a long day, and they let us in. LOL I'm glad we stopped in! The food was good, the service was excellent, and the dive bar atmosphere was welcoming. Looks like a great place to watch a big game with a few friends over a beer and dinner. In town for lacrosse tourney wanted something walkable. Food was phenomenal suggest fried pizza rolls with Parmesan and ranch, wings with bbq sauce. Don't forget to get the fried funnel cake fries. I had no idea what to expect when we came here. It was definitely more of a dive bar than I had expected and pretty small (I wasn't even sure we had the right place at first from the outside.), but I'll take a small dive bar any day over the large, painfully loud, cover-charging sports bar we had originally wandered into (and quickly left). The friend I was with is a singer and was beyond thrilled that there was karaoke. We had an awesome time here last night. It was exactly what we were hoping for -- a fun, laid-back place to celebrate & unwind after our band's late-night gig was over. This unassuming gem of a place is located near the Lucas Oil Stadium and blends so well into the neighboring buildings that it's easy to overlook, which is a shame. Even at the prime dinner hour we visited, it was fairly slow compared to what we expected to see around that time on a weekend. Regardless, the food and folks here are amazing! Emily and Taylor made us feel like welcome friends both nights we went in while attending GENCON, and we will definitely return any time we are in town. Tip: When you're here, make sure to ask about the food as there are likely more options than appear on the menu, including (possibly) bourbon ice cream. If you like BBQ, the brisket fries are not to be missed! My understanding is that they have a new owner who is very interested in the food side of things and likes to experiment, so look forward to new items with some regularity. read more

This is a great old bar on the Southside of downtown Indianapolis with $9.99 lunch specials that are perfect for a working man's lunch. The breaded tenderloin was perfectly prepared as were the fries. The service was quick and the bartender looked through many stations to find the afternoon baseball game that I wanted to watch. This is a hole in the wall bar right in the shadow of Lucas Oil stadium and across from the bus station. It is a dimly lit joint and has a bar area with seating and a dining area. There is also some seats that overlook the dining area. The bar is a full service bar and has a television above it. They serve signature cocktails and beer. They have a digital juke box in the bar area and the dining area has a couple of televisions and video games back by the bathrooms. There is metered street parking out front and some lots available in a reasonable walking distance. Currently, there is a lot of road construction going on around the bar, taking up some of the nearby street parking. I heard that this place had boozey ice cream, so I was all in. I had to come here. I was disappointed that they were no longer selling the ice cream, due to some controversy/drama. I was crushed (cue puppy face). I came here mainly for that, ohh well, I had to make the best of it. The bar has a local vibe. The bartender knew most of the patrons that were there very well. It was clear that they were regulars. The place has a limited menu with stuff like, burgers, fried banana peppers, an exotic grilled cheese, and chicken sandwiches. I ordered the brisket burger with fries. It took about 15 minutes for me to get my food and it was pretty good. Both the fries and burger were flavorful. I sat at the bar and eat my meal and my only knock was that the bartender lost track of me some times and got too wrapped up in conversations with patrons at the bar. Not a huge deal, because he was very friendly. But I was on a schedule and had to go. This is a decent hole in the bar located on the outskirts of the downtown indy bar/club district. It looks like more of a local spot and not very tourisy. It is definitely worth checking out. read more

I've never had a bad time here and word of advice to "newbies" it tends to get super busy before and after games. It is beside Lucas Oil Stadium and can at times receive a slew of homeless strange people wandering the streets. There is street parking if you are lucky but don't forget there is a parking lot beside the building. This establishment has kept me hostage because I was having such a good time! Was in town for the Olympic swimming trials at Lucus Oil and wanted a traditional dive bar to grab an app and cold beer. Happened to catch the owner Rob sitting at the end of bar. We had a great conversation about the bar and so much more. Rob even brought out a couple of his favorites which included duck empanadas and homemade butter pecan ice cream. It was such an experience- definitely the best we had in Indy. We like everything from the 5 star restaurants to good old fashion dive bars like this one. Cant beat good people and cold drinks. What a fabulous little gem of a find! My friend Ann and I had a day to kill in Indy after the Taylor Swift concert. Knowing nothing about the city, we had a Lyft drop us downtown so we could explore. We happened upon this little dive that had a big sign, "SWIFTIES WELCOME". As a Swiftie, we felt welcome! This building has a lot of history, and is the perfect spot to post up for some bar bites and drinks. Our bartender, Lila, made our day! We had so much fun chatting with her. She was knowledgeable and incredibly warm. There were only a few of us in the bar, and she easily kept us all serviced with a smile. Lila, you are a gem! Hope to see you next time we're in indy. PS. If you're looking for one of the ultimate hole in the wall bars in the downtown area, this is it! They've recently come across new owners, and have completely revamped their food menu to "boujee" hole in the wall bar food, so we had to go check it out. Had to try one of their new cocktails first. I went with "calm before the storm," because who can resist cbd blueberry acai water? I will say I think there was only a splash of that, as it tasted like it was 95% tequila, which can't complain about that! As for food, I ordered the adult grilled cheese. It had halloumi cheese, sliced watermelon, mint, lettuce, and onion. It is supposed to either come with balsamic glaze or honey Sriracha mayo, but I wasn't asked for either, nor did I specify. The flavors were really great together, but I will admit I did expect the cheese to be more melted than it was. It was more so like a club sandwich to me, instead of a melty, grilled cheese. Again, yummy, but not what I was expecting. The cotton candy cheesecake was out of this world. It literally tasted exactly how it sounds. If you are a cotton candy and cheesecake lover, you will love this. I will say I didn't really understand the m&m garnish, kind of threw off the flavor in my opinion. Kind of just ate them separate off to the side We came in on a busy Saturday and the one bartender was absolutely killing it. She was super friendly and gave us a few rounds of cold drinks in a timely manner. Definitely recommend this place before or after Lucas Oil events, or if you just want a fun hole in the wall spot!! We love The Whistle Stop! They have fun events both weekly and monthly (bingo on the first Tuesday of every month is a hit), and they have great food and deals on drinks. The ranch is delicious, the food is cooked fresh, and they've got deals on drinks throughout the week. We also appreciate that the staff are friendly and recognize you. Absolutely amazing!!! Didn't want to deal with construction or having to walk anywhere down thru there with my kid so I called here to see if they let kids in on a week night and they did!! Easy parking right out front with the construction. And first thing we saw was monster tots on the menu, which is his absolute favorite food and not easy to find, especially in places we can both go in. We also got the brisket Mac n cheese, soooo good and a chicken tenders basket, which was also great and perfectly cooked. Everything was delicious and not overpriced at all. Server was awesome and place was very chill. Music wasn't too loud and not crazy packed either. Will definitely be back again and so happy to find a new place with his favorite food!!! The atmosphere was great, but my fries were cold and they didn't have enough servers for the crowd. Most people at my table enjoyed their food but I do not recommend the fish and chips. It's made with salmon not whitefish and just tasted off. Go for a burger for sure. read more
