The WELL at Sac state is a great facility. They do seem to be suffering from success as it is extremely busy at certain hours, so much so that I only really go late at night after my classes (~7-9pm) to avoid waiting double digit minutes for all machines. There's something for everyone here and as an alumni they offer very cheap post graduate memberships. Included (without choice) in your tuition however, is a $442 University Union / Well fee. Dang I am so lucky I happen to be in university when this was being built because my pre-paid alumni discount is a STEAL. Actually, the regular alumni rate is already a steal ($45/mo) for these facilities. There are about 12 (!!!) squat racks and every piece of equipment you can imagine. EVEN HIP THRUSTER PLATFORMS!!! You can rent barbell pads (no fee!) for your hip thrusters, too. It's amazing. They even have a tire flipping machine??? Didn't know that was a thing. It's super clean and spacious, too! Lots of natural light. Aaaaaand the locker rooms don't require you to bring a padlock from the 1990s. It's awesome. Only downsides are: - There's only ONE smith machine. Like why... - Parking during the week. $4 for two hours. - Heard it gets super crowded. I only went on a Saturday so far, and apparently collegiates are too hungover to workout on Saturday at 10am. Fine with me...but TBD on the rest of the week. All in all, an awesome place to workout! Loving it here. read more

The Well is such an impressive facility on the Sac State campus! They have so much to offer such as their climbing wall, fitness classes, raquet ball rooms, basketball courts, indoor tracks, and their countless machines and weights. The only downside is that it does get very busy during the semester and after work hours (5pm-8am ish). The facility is mostly Sac State students so it can also come off as a more social environment. I love that it is always clean. There are always wipes, mats, and weights that are available to be used in empty studio rooms. I'm going to miss working out here if I ever relocate! read more

Terrible experience with the staff upfront, they were very passive aggressive when it came to sorting out an issue I had getting in. It made the entire experience trying to become a member a bad experience. The Well is probably the biggest attraction on campus. There are so many great programs and equipment. I've been to a lot of gyms and this one by far is the best one I've ever been to. Once you workout at The Well, you'll never want to workout anywhere else. They have so much equipment downstairs on the fitness floor as well as upstairs in the Circuit Area if you don't want all the hustle and bustle of the fitness floor. There's also a huge room dedicated just for cardio, as well as several other cardio machines spread throughout the whole facility. Not to mention an indoor track as well. Free weights are located all around the building and the staff is really great on keeping them racked so you're not running around looking for dumbbells. They have a variety of fitness classes (all free) as well as small group classes for a small fee. The one thing I will say is that during the first few weeks of the semester it tends to be a little crowded, but they offer a swarm tracker on their website that lets you know how busy it is. I've always had great experiences at The Well. The staff is always friendly and will try to accommodate all of your needs. read more

The Well is pretty awesome! They have everything a gym is suppose to have, the only thing they dont have here is a swimming pool, steam room, and sauna. Other than that they have rock climbing, equipment w television, racket ball rooms, and indoor track. You can rent your sport equipments such as rackets, basketball, and rock climbing shoes. The fact that it's still brand new, it's really clean and sanitary. I love the fact that they provide towels for you and also you get to set your own codes for lockers. The Well is the perfect all-in-one (well almost) stop! The work out area is two stories and is pretty spacious. The upstairs is mainly the cardio area w/ an indoor track and various fitness classrooms. Downstairs, of the work out area, has the weight lifting area, rock climbing area, as well as two large basketball courts. The one thing I dislike now is that you have to check out & in towels that you borrow from the Well, but that's because some skanks had to ruin it for us all by stealing them from The Well. The student health center looks 10 times better than now than in the old building. Everything is pretty much state-of-the-art and the staff is very helpful & welcoming. read more

I forgot how it feels to be an overly privileged and self righteous college student... ...damn, I miss those days! This review is for their 5K Sac State run (don't quote me on the exact title of the run). I didn't actually step one foot into this highly-rated "well"! My first mishap was with the packet pick-up. Obviously catering toward the college crowd, however this run is open to all members of the local community - so TW hours are quite limited for those who work - even worse, commuters! So as I was having the Bestest pick up the packet, we ran into some issues. The snarky little college girl was very rude and un-helpful in every way. She was hard to work with and when we did what she asked, she still refused to help... Needless to say...a call was placed to the manager who promptly took care of my packet-pick up, with a second trip back to TW. Twice in one day, I was definitely irritated that I made the Bestest have to revisit this place again - lo siento Krystle R.! As for the actual run, the only issue that stands out which is a HUGE issue in my mind - is there were NO MILE MARKERS! Seriously...its about the 4th time they've hosted this run (again, don't quote me on this), but you'd think by now they'd have gotten that down. In case you didn't see the bagillion signs, Muscle Milk was definitely a sponsor. This was the most branded run I've been too...signage at almost every half mile. I'm okay with that, especially since you got a free sample after the run! Free parking was a plus, even though it was at the top of the garage. It's free, so I can't really complain. Also, a fairly inexpensive 5K, when compared to the others that happen during the year. I love, love, love that it was a mid-weekday, evening 5K - definitely spicing up my work week :) Not-so-FUN run...but at least it was exercise! The Well is one of the best gyms I have been to. It tends to get pretty busy because all of Sacramento State goes here, but all the machines are up to date and it is pretty spacious with something to do for everyone. They offer free fitness classes for students, small group classes for $6, and personal training. I personally love the small group classes, the personal trainers know what they're doing and they know how to make you feel welcome. I'm surprised more people don't utilize them. We have competed at this site for many years now, we were BLESSED when Sac State and The Well opened their arms to the Special Olympics community. My Husband and I coach teams for SONC/WPA, and The Well has been the home of our Regional Basketball tournament for the past several years. This weekend event is in March very year, and we will be here THIS weekend! The basketball courts are AMAZING! I love teaching our athletes about the recycled materials used, including the sunflower shells used in the walls! Such a visual stunner! The staff here is AMAZING! We are well treated by these amazing Sac State students (Go Hornets! We have TWO!) As a coach AND parent of special needs adults, we have ALWAYS received the utmost in INCLUSIVE treatment! I only use this gym because it comes out of my pockets through paying for tuition. The only place I've worked out at is in the cardio room. Their machines are easy to use and always clean. It's never been crowded to the point where I didn't have a machine to work on. Everyone is always minding their own business. The layout of the gym is nice. There's a track indoors and outdoors. Indoors is right above the basketball court so that's cool. There's a rock climbing wall, racquetball rooms (rent equipment near the desk after checking in w/ CSUS ID or fingerprint), and two floors of machines. The lockers are always almost full in the locker rooms so there are smaller ones outside of the locker rooms. You can bring in one guest a semester for free. I believe it's $10 each time after for the guest. read more

The Well offers great health services besides just the gym. I especially like the counseling services that they provide! I tried a few different counseling groups and a personal therapist. As a counseling grad student, I am learning a lot by just being the client. I am impressed by how compassionate and knowledgeable they are. I definitely would advise CSUS students to go visit some time because you pay for it in your tuition! read more

Not going to lie, the wait on squats and deadlifts can get pretty intense. Come early in the morning if you want to work on that booty. Equipment here are pretty good. Students are nice. A lot of activities to participate in. Not much to complain or write home about. Come and get fit. read more

Soooo... I might need like 360 sac state students who would like to be my friend, and allow me to be their one-time guest to this fabulous facility they refer to as THE Well. Why? Because this school gym is crackin'! It's not one of those boring school gyms where machines are broken, weights are disorganized, small, gotta wait your turn, (or in my case-24 hr fitness). Its two stories, indoor track, basketball, volley ball, soccer, weights, cycling, yoga, rock climbing, cardio, etc. they got it all. Well, minus a sauna/steam room and a pool. This place is amazing. I have a membership at 24hour Fitness and I go to the newly remodeled Super Sport in the Downtown mall, and they've got nothing on The Well. This place is well stocked with equipment and there's always plenty going on with classes and intramural sports. The best thing is the the fee to join is comparable to other gyms, but the facility is amazing. This really only works if you go to Sac State though, otherwise you have to purchase a parking permit which will run you about $140 for 4 months. Plus, unlike 24, there's only one of them. On the plus side, if you're going to CSUS the gym membership is included and you can check out things like rackets for racquetball - plus they have a rock wall that is 2 stories tall, which is a cool bonus. Another, obvious, but hidden benefit to going to The Well at Sac State is the scenery :) As a gym, if you can get there, you should go. I've even been wondering if there's a way to put my 24 membership on hold. I wouldn't want to cancel the membership though, because if you're not in class, going to The Well just doesn't make sense. Update: I still give it 5 stars, but I just wanted to identify some improvements - how minor they might be - that could be made. I've got a 40 inch waist and the towels don't fit around me, awkward. The showers have a button that has to be pushed 30 times throughout the course of a shower to keep it on, so I've been using the handicap stalls, which both have broken shower heads. Also, I like to do 28 minutes on an elliptical machine and there is a TV on every single one and flat screens - let's chock it up to: too much a a good thing. I end up staring at a blank, black screen or looking around, or over it to the other flat screens. Most disturbing, there are never any lockers available and about 10% are broken. More lockers are needed. I think they really underestimated how many people would be utilizing such a great resource. read more

What! The running and elliptical machines have individual fans in them... I never knew such contraption could exist! Really impressed with all the amenities of Sac State's gym such as: - nifty, accessible, "no locker" lockers - machines have "counters" to count your reps - the fans in the running machinese - basically all the gym equipment you can think of (or so it seems) - rock climbing wall (that is free!) Being a very casual gymmer, I was thoroughly wowwed by all the cool features this gym offers. I thought UCD's gym was pretty good... but Sac State's gym definitely beats that! Downside... I'm not a Sac State student so I won't be able to return whenever I want, but current students can bring in one guest for free/semester. Thank goodness I have two sibs going there right now! It's a great still kinda new facility. They have great and plentiful variety of cardio machines. That room is huge! The staff keeps everything clean. The place itself feels roomy and not some stuffy old gym. Most of the friendly staff are students so good experience for them. I do only come here during summer break so it's not super crazy busy and I have access to all the cardio machines and weights as I need to. read more

WOW, I was so blown away the first time I stepped foot in the Well. I knew that Sac State was about to open up a state of the art new facility, which made me less upset about transferring there (I transferred in Fall 2010 when The Well just opened up) instead of UC Davis. I have only gone a few times during the school year, but this year I am going to start going consistently now that I have been back to my healthy/fitness lifestyle and working out regularly. My sister and dad were former members of the Gold's Gym in Elk Grove and when they invited me there, I was AMAZED of all the equipment and classes. Needless to say, The Well trumps Gold's Gym 2000%. The facilities are TOP NOTCH AND CLEAN!!! I usually use the elliptical here. There are a wide variety of cardio equipment, weight machines, etc. but I am a VERY happy camper after finding out that they also have kettlebells. I LOVE KETTLEBELLS!!!! Kettlebells are just starting to get recognition in the US and very few gyms have them, so seeing them there got me very excited. I get faster results and feel stronger, sexier and leaner using kettlebells than I do with dumbells and weight machines. I have tried yoga and pilates classes here, and I definitely want to get back into that when school starts. And come here after class to run the indoor track, do the elliptical, or kettlebells. They have a wide array of group fitness classes, or you can play tennis or racquetball or whatever. There is also a huge rock wall (the biggest rock wall in the CSU system) that I definitely want to try sometime. If you are a student at Sac State, take advantage while you can! This is a perfect way to sneak in exercise between classes, work, activities, etc. Just be careful that you don't ruin your workout with the Yogurt Cafe in the corner. I still maintain that The Well is a great facility for Sac State students, there are just a few things I wish they would improve on. 1. The check-in process. It seems like even though I do have a membership, I go to scan my finger when I walk in and I always have to wait for them to manually check me in with the computer. I don't know if it's a glitch in the system, but I've come here a total of 3 times in the past couple of weeks and the same problem happens every time. 2. The weights area. I love the machines that are offered, it just sucks that there's only one of each kind so when it gets busy you have to wait a while to get through your round of machines, depending on how many people want to use the same ones. Kind of a bummer. 3. The locker rooms. I think the locker rooms are awesome, but I feel this is the one area of The Well that they could have designed a little better. I have no problems with the shower or bathroom area, it's the locker area. For the number of students that attend Sac State (which is A LOT), you would think that they would have doubled the size of the locker rooms. Getting a locker is kind of a hassle because a lot of the time, they're all occupied and you have to wait for someone to come in and leave. I also wish that the locking system was manual instead of digital. I do appreciate that I don't have to bring my own lock, but sometimes the locking mechanism can be a little faulty. And a lot of them are broken and need to be repaired. I still love The Well and come here now and then, but I still prefer to do my weights at 24 Hour Fitness instead of here simply because it gets too crowded. read more

If you are attending Sac State, you MUST check out the WELL. Not only is it coming out of your pocket, but it's very beneficial and well worth your time! The utilities are well-maintained and the equipments are all new and high advanced in technology. The staff here are extremely friendly, they definitely know you if you come here almost every day! Since I've been a student at Sac State I've taken full advantage of The Well! It has so much to offer for what ever your active lifestyle may be. They have racks for power lifters, free weights, cable weights, rock climbing, indoor track, basketball, pools, racket ball, treadmills that are energy efficient, yoga rooms, and much more! I am mostly in the free weight and power lifting area of the gym. I use almost everything and enjoy the accessibility to all the weights and machines. They have a couple small sections dedicated to abs and stretching which are useful. It does get a little over crowded in certain hours of the day. I wish that the squat racks and power lifting racks could face the mirror so one can maintain and focus on form. I feel a little off balance when I'm not able to use a mirror. I feel that the University wasted money on the new technology of a full handprint scan before entering the gym... I personally feel that it's unnecessary for that type of security to enter a gym. There was the option of finger print or sliding your OneCard to gain access which was faster and efficient. This place is AWESOME! It literally has everything. Basketball court, rock climbing, machines, fitness classes, and much more! They have lockers throughout the whole place. The locker rooms are very spacious and new. There's someone always around to help out if you have questions. I like how there's a personal television at the Elliptical machines. It has WiFi. A little cafe place. You can study there, they have frozen yogurt, salads, and sandwiches. It has a health center which contains a pharmacy. You can get medicine at a cheaper price I believe. I love the well, but I wish they had other stuff like a pool and sauna. Some of the best features of the well is the large space and multiple basketball courts that are in the gym. There is always pick up games going on here on the first court, so roll through with your homies to run 5 on 5 full court. This place gets pretty packed around 5-7pm, but there is plenty of equipment and lots of alternative machines and free weights to go around. The well consists of two floors, the first lower floor is where the majority of the benches and free weights are, there is also a boxing equipment room where you can use a heavy punching bag. There is also a padded area where you are able to rock climb! On the lower floor you are also able to rent towels from the 2 desks and rent equipments such as basketballs, racquetball equipment, rock climbing stuff, etc. On the lower floor the majority of machines are found here, but you can also find some on the second floor. The second floor has a few raquetball rooms, a large indoor section above the basketball gym where you can run a few laps, and a section of the gym where there is lots of machines for cardio. They have the strider, elliptical, treadmill, stepmaster, cycles, etc. They also play music softly in the background so you can listen to that if you forgot your headphones at home. On the second floor there is also a hidden section where there is everything you need for a full body workout, this is behind the cycling room, and dance room. There is also more treadmills facing the basketball courts upstairs. The gym consists of a boys and girls locker room and a cabana room. There is also a room that is either used for soccer or for volleyball. The last things I want to mention is the well offers a place where you can purchase glasses, a health center for students on campus, a cooking class section, and a place to get some healthy food. Beautiful building promoting health and wellness! The student health center is here, a pharmacy (prices are generally much cheaper here than retail pharmacies like CVS), vision center (optometry), gym, and a nice healthy sandwich/salad/yogurt cafe. I will only comment on the Vision Center since I worked there. Vision Center: free eye exams for students/staff during the school year, co-pay during the summer if you're not taking classes. $20 for anything to do with getting contact lenses of ANY type (new fitting, re-fitting, evaluation/update current prescription). A steal compared to ANYWHERE else - even Costco is something like $80 for the simplest type of contact lens fitting. Book your appointments early because they fill up REALLY fast. There's a charge for not showing up to your appointment. Things are really digital too - you get your history form emailed to you and you fill it out online prior to coming in. You get email reminders of your appointments, and can cancel appointments online (but must make them in person or on the phone). Comprehensive exams are usually approximately 45 min with dilation. If you get contacts and the doctor needs you to return for a contact lens checkup, it usually takes less than 15 minutes to check them and get your prescription. We see and treat eye-related urgent care events too, like red eyes, bumps on eyelids, trauma, abrasions, foreign bodies, etc. This may slow down the schedule a tad, but everyone will still get full service! Pretty good selection of frames, a lot of eco-friendly frames as well as some fashionable Coach frames, etc. I think students have a 10% discount. Both glasses and contacts can be ordered through here and picked up here, but your prescription can be used anywhere, of course. read more

What's a 5 star review going to do when they'll never lose business as long as people go to Sac State? I used to never go to this place because say... I'm too lazy to walk that far from the Union in hot weather and/or change into workout clothes. But it's my final semester, now in graduate school and I guess I'm finally going to go here... It puts the gym at work to shame! They simply have every equipment imaginable and other paid private gym memberships I've had didn't even have all the equipment this gym has. You can ping from device to device and not get bored / run out of muscles to workout on in the ways you want to. Plus they have people always on the basketball courts to play with and they even provide equipment for whatever other sports you want to play. I could list everything they had and my enjoyment using them but it'd be lengthy... Also, the staff is really friendly and helpful! And they're remodeling/expanding it soon, so I will definitely be a proud alumni :) read more

I've only been to a couple other gyms and those ones are in small towns, so it is hard to compare The Well to those places. So far, this is one of the best gyms that I have been to. Of course, there can always be more improvements, but it has just about everything that I could need and want. Not to mention, I pay way too much money for tuition at Sacramento State so I try to take advantage of everything that I pay for. The Well is always pretty packed, but I highly recommend to never go around 6 pm. It is just unbearable. Half the people in there are just standing around just to wait for a machine or weight to be free for them to use. But if you make the right choice and go at a time where traffic hours are low, then your workout can fly by. There is a lot to offer here. Intramural sports, free weights, machine weights both upstairs and downstairs, an indoor track, cardio room, racquetball courts, basketball courts, volleyball/soccer courts, locker rooms, rooms with mirrors for various activities such as dance or yoga, a rock climbing wall, a boxing room, an equipment desk that lets you borrow balls, jump ropes, towels, etc, and more! The staff is pretty friendly and always quick to help you with your needs. If you get injured or sick, The Well also has a wellness center so you can get checked up there too. You can also get your flu shots there as well. Many meetings are also held here and even cooking demonstrations are held here at certain times. Unfortunately, The Well is not a 24 hour gym. It closes on weekdays at midnight, 10 on fridays and sundays, and 8 on saturdays. I guess since it is student staffed, some free time for them would be nice. It is also has restricted hours during break periods that reflect the school system. If you are a Sac State student and haven't been to The Well, you're wasting your money! Go! read more

Went to the well for the first time ever because my friend dragged me to workout with her. I usually like going to my local gym, 24 hour fitness but since it's apart of my tuition and I pay for The Well, might as we'll check it out once. It was so nice. It has just about everything! A running track, basketball court, racket ball rooms, rock climbing, locker rooms with locks so you don't have to bring your own, and you can check out towels. They also have a variety of different equipments. The one thing I don't like was how crowded it was. It was so crowded I had to wait for the machines I wanted to use. Sucked cause I felt like I spent an extra 30 mins there just waiting for machines to open up or weights or mats. Overall I think id come back once in a while, id probably stick with my gym though because at 24, it's not as busy and the classes are free. This gym compares to the ARC (Activities & Recreational Center) at UCD with state of the art machines, indoor track, racquetball courts, rock wall, etc., however there are definitely MORE cardio & weight lifting machines here...& MORE students working out of course. Super packed on weekday evenings. Pros: -Great place to workout because of all the great equipment available. -Wide range of workout rooms. -TVs in every room + on almost every machine. -Free if you're a student. -Affordable if you're alumni/not affiliated. -Great security barriers/gates at the front desk. Lol. (Must workout 5ever!) Including fingerprint scan. -Nice locker rooms/bathrooms. -Employees do routine checks of rooms. Cons: -Can be super packed in the afternoon & evening. -If you're a workout hermit like me, meaning you like to workout in your own little bubble or space, this isn't the place. -Can get humid and hot at times due to huge population all in one building. -Can't have your small workout sack/bag at the machine with you, if an employee sees, they'll come up and nicely ask if it can be put in a cubby on the sidewall. This place is great!! Everything is new. It has rock climbing, basketball courts, fitness classes, indoor track, plus much more! The Health Center is also in the Well. Now, you don't have to walk across campus to get there. It's more convenient now that it's in the Well. I'm currently taking fitness classes. I bought it for $68 which last for the whole semester and I can access all the classes. The Well has plenty of cardio machines. There's also showers and the lockers are accessed by codes and not by locks. The Well is far better than any gym/24hour fitness I've been to. read more
