But I also feel…read morelike I need to add a little bit of background info about why I feel the way I do so here goes nothing. At the peak of my fitness over a decade ago, I was part of a now-defunct fitness group called SacTown FitClub that had a community and vibes like no other. Our workouts were mostly plyometrics based metabolic conditioning at different parks before they eventually got a warehouse space with a bit of equipment. Ever since they closed, I had a huge void in my life and I've been bouncing around different gyms and even trying different types of martial arts. I was trying to chase that high because for me it wasn't just about the gym and having equipment, I was looking for a community and workouts like FitClub had. Fast forward to October 2024. At this point I've been powerlifting with a small group of buddies for a couple years, but I'd grown bored with it and I needed a spark. I had been considering diving back into CrossFit for around a year now(I had a very very brief stint at Kaiwai around 2017 or 2018) but anxiety trying new things with new people kept me from taking the leap and coming back after all this time. I even messaged the owner of another box and scheduled a day to come in but I got cold feet and backed out. Then after talking to one of my powerlifting buddies who wanted to try out CrossFit, we decided to check out CrossFit Kaiwai. It helped that I remembered the owner Jaws being very friendly and accommodating back in 2017-18, and he was exactly the same when I messaged him in October to let him know we wanted to try a class before potentially signing up. We attended a 5:30pm Wednesday night class that Jaws instructed and the struggle was real, but never were we expected to do more than what our fitness level and abilities allowed. Jaws was very encouraging and insightful, giving us substitutions or modifications for any movements we were unable to do. If I'm being honest, it was freakin tough but I always enjoyed the challenge that metabolic conditioning brought, especially in a group setting. I was sold on that 1 class and signed up right away and started with just 1 class a week because I already had a powerlifting split of 4 days a week. Fast forward to present day. I've cut the powerlifting to 1-2 days a week if that, because I'm at Kaiwai 5 days a week. I didn't just fill the void I had, my cup is now overflowing. I didn't just find a community, I gained a family and I'm doing workouts I love to do(ngl, I'm also doing ones I hate lol). Every single day is a new challenge, and every workout complete is rewarding. I love that here you never suffer alone, you get to suffer with a bunch of friends lol. There's never a shortage of coaches or buddies hyping you up during the workout when it feels like your mind is working against you, having you ready to give up on yourself. I even switched from 5:30pm workouts to 5am workouts. Who tf in their right mind does a 5am workout, especially before work?! If you told me a year ago that I'd be doing 5am workouts before work, I would tell you you're out of your goddamn mind. But this is what Kaiwai and all the beautiful people that encompass this place do. It took some time but I'm starting to get the results I've wanted for myself for so many years now. I'm feeling better and better about myself and I'm regaining my confidence. This is supposed to be my home away from home but in some ways, it feels like my true home. On my hardest days, I know I can come here and leave feeling lighter. When I'm sick and miss some days, I'll get texts asking where or how I am and I feel missed. I'm absolutely blessed I get to be a part of this place and my heart is always full from the friendships I have gained. I hope more people come along and get to experience all that I have felt, because I love this place and all the people in it more than I can put into words.

Unlike other gym classes, where all the students are doing the same exercises, each class is tailored to each individual goals. I followed Jonathan's instructions, did the workouts he told me to do, finished a bulk and a cut phase and I couldn't be happier with the results! '17 to March '18 and in that time SERIOUS DAMAGE was done to my spine. I had to have many consultations with my doctor and even a spinal surgeon due to the excruciating pain that I have been in day to day. I had to be lifted out of bed in the morning and lowered into the seating position. I was a healthy 26 year old before I let the trainer here wreck my back. I told him I was in pain during a set of 10 sets of 10 reps of deadlifts that he PRESSURED ME INTO DOING and he ignored me and went back to looking at his phone. Fast forward 2 months and I've been complaining about the same pain the whole time and he continues to take my money to train me, even though the FIRST DOCTOR I see tells me to take time off from training. Hmmmm, it seems like the trainer was much more interested in draining my wallet, not improving my health. He's a scammer and unprofessional and he will tell you about his degrees and how he cares about fitness but it's all BS. See all their nice new equipment? They buy it by training people who have no business doing the kinds of exercises they recommend. Confirmed by my spinal surgeon. BUYER BEWARE

I hate saying anything bad, and I'm not trying to talk trash, just the truth…read more I joined in the hopes of have access to gym equipment but to be closer to home and avoid the yuckiness of the larger corporate gyms. My first problem: I could not get a hold of anyone. Ever. I tried calling four times. I left two voice mails. I emailed them. And I never got a reply. I actually got super annoyed the I tried contacting them for a month and no one got back to me so one day after work I just walked in. Equally annoying was one of owners feigning surprise saying "Oh, that's weird! We never got any messages!" So I join anyways, because it's basically the same price as 24Hour, but closer to home. And it seemed like it would be great. The facility is tiny but is NICE. But after a few times I realized the downfall in this as well...........I was hardly ever able to use any equipment because when ever I was there, they were using them with their personal training clients. I mean, that's the point of the gym, but .......why take non-personal training clients if they can't use the equipment? I was basically relegated to using the treadmill most of the time. So that was a bummer to realize. After a month, I realized I was not going to be able to work out at the level I wanted to, and decided to quit. The owners had both told me that they had a 30-day trial period to see if I liked it, and after that, they required a 30 day notice to quit. I called on the 31st day to quit. On the 31st day, and, I might add, in that time they closed for a vacation day one of those days. But anyways.........I called to say I as quitting (the same number on their website I'd tried to call and never gotten any call back) and they called me back IMMEDIATELY to say "Oh sorry you're leaving AND WE'RE CHARGING YOU $50 for your 30 days notice!" I called back to say "Hey......I quit on the 31st day......can you cut me some slack? You said you offered a 30-day trial period." And, of course, no return call. Overall, I feel like they kind of use clients like me to supplement their personal training clients. This gym should really be ONLY for their personal training because it's just not available enough for folks like me who just want to come in and work out a four or five days a week. And apparently they only return your phone calls to say "Hey, we are taking your money". Nice facility, if a bit small. But not worth it if you are serious about working out.

Answer: Urban Fitness does - it's only the most awesome place ever to work out! Hubby and I have been working out here for a couple of years now and wouldn't want to go anywhere else. It's all been said before so I don't need to sound like a broken record in my review. UF wouldn't be the right fit for everyone, but if all you need in your gym is a great midtown location, well-maintained equipment, optional personal training, other spa-like services, ultra clean with THE MOST FRIENDLY OWNERS & CLIENTS, then this might be your new forever gym.
