I was a fairly competitive athlete as a youth but after high school for me (and I imagine many young athletes like me), the focus on exercise really became weight loss because I wasn't playing a game or practicing for anything, and had never really been all that outdoorsy or athletic beyond softball. The only reason for me to do something physical became to lose weight / keep weight off. This mentality doesn't really work, or didn't really work for me, and I had not felt like I had my weight under control since high school. I think this mentality is ultimately problematic for a lot of reasons, but I think the biggest reason is that it is unsustainable. You burn out because you are not really enjoying what you are doing, and you are not connecting the physical exertion to anything more than a superficial goal. Body Tribe really changed my mentality and I feel like with the new perspective I have that I will never fall into an inactive rut again. I started going there when my friend Courtney became a training intern. I had been working out at 24 Hour Fitness a lot for about 3 months and had lost about 10 pounds by doing mainly cardio. I was feeling pretty happy with myself because I was being quite diligent and feeling good, even running a couple miles a week, but I knew I needed to step it up a notch. On my first workout at Body Tribe I was blown away by how different it was than any other workout I had done. Crossfit is a lot of plyometrics and activities that feel natural to actually working or doing manual labor. Now, that may not sound completely desirable but ultimately it makes more sense for building strength and working out all aspects of your body, rather than isolating one muscle. When you are done working out, you feel like you actually built something. I believe that "something" is your spirit. Everyone that works there is amazing, and they all have a different style. My body is completely different than it has ever been. I am strong enough to run 5 miles now, and went from a size 12 to a 6, not even losing that much weight but building muscle. More than anything though, I don't look at the gym as a chore anymore. I genuinely enjoy the challenges Body Tribe presents to me. If you have a New Year's Resolution to change your body or maybe your just curious, you should really check them out. They have really reasonable rates and terms, and lots of introductory workshops / new member orientations.

I absolutely LOVE that they have an open gym membership, although I do highly recommend either joining their classes or getting paired with one of their trainers. I joined as an open gym member and decided to enhance my program by teaming up with a personal coach/trainer and I couldn't be happier. And if you can't do either of the above, they offer workshops on Saturdays to train you in various lifts. Formerly known as Body Tribe Fitness, this place now operates under the name Health Works. Don't fret, it still offers the same warm & inviting community atmosphere as before, along with your essential olympic / powerlifting equipment. This is a place for those who believe in strength conditioning and working towards overall wellness and fitness. Most people who attend this gym are well versed in the language of weight lifting, kinesthetics, and physiology, so it's safe to say that you will be in good hands if you enter as a novice. And although their open gym hours are not available in the early mornings and weekends, they are VERY accommodating of your schedule. I've attended classes by both Alex and Jalen; they're both awesome and add their own flair to each class. The group is a good mix ranging from beginners, and ppl who have been working out for years. No matter your fitness level, anyone can do the workouts and leave feeling good. Coach Jalen once said, "The workouts aren't hard, just intense." I completely agree. Because anyone can do the exercises, but the difficulty level is completely up to you (until the coaches get on you that you're making it look too easy lol). I've never sweated or worked out so hard in my life. During each class, I counted down the minutes until the torture would end. I hated lifting weights the most. I should've bought a set of my own 5 lb. weights for class. Workouts are never boring because they always change it up. Even though I hated working out, I loved how great I felt afterward. The building is pretty much a warehouse setting. There are several big fans hanging on the wall that help you cool down. The floor was a bit dirty. Every time I laid my mat down, a layer of dust would fly up. All the equipment you need is there including jump ropes, dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls, resistance bands, and gliders. Sarai, the owner, sends email fairly often. Emails contain menus, workout tips, deals, and much more. Now that boot camp is over, I hope I can motivate myself to work out... Excuse me while I go pig out and take a nap.

"Join us at the 5am class!" they said.. I responded, "WHAT?! That's the middle of the night!!!" After some contemplation, and no other convenient time, I started coming about 2-4 times per week.... and I LOVE IT! I go to sleep a little bit earlier at night, but start my day off with more energy and better attitude. The coaches, Torsten and Josh, are awesome! Inclusive atmosphere, all different levels of fitness, no pressure to perform harder than you're comfortable with -- but enough pressure to push your boundaries and encourage progress. I lost 18 lbs. in the first 2 months!! From 189lbs.- 171lbs.!! Ultimately significantly lowering my cholesterol. I don't even know who I am anymore!
