This used to be my favorite place when visiting Venice beach but this last time was off. It was noon this Saturday, they said they were out of battered fish and if it was ok to sub breaded fish. I thought that was strange but regrettably said ok. Turns out it looked and tasted like store bought frozen breaded fish, the same goes for the shrimp. There won't be a next time for me but lesson learned. I added a star for the fries as they were excellent. Skip the Cole slaw though. read more

I looooove fish and chips and tartar sauce so definitely had to try this while I was at Venice beach. It's just a little window shop near a few other "restaurants" with a decent amount of small outdoor tables to eat at if you don't want to eat on the beach. Unfortunately when I went they were out of calamari so we just got the fish and chips. The fish is super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Also I really liked the cole slaw that came with it LOL. I like how you can customize the dish with different salts, dips, etc. Would come back for a quick bite if I was at the beach :) read more

Came here for fries, will come back for seafood! My boyfriend and I both agreed, these are the best fries we've ever had. We got them with garlic seasoning I believe and got to choose a couple yummy sauces to go with. We paired it with sandwiches from the spot on the corner but next time we'll just do our entire meal from here. The lady at the counter was laidback and helpful. If you are looking for a fresh and delicious fish and chip place, just go here. I have been to this place several times and have never been left disappointed. The location is just an outside bench and table, with a half open door where they take orders. Not much to see except the menu which lists a very concise and simple menu(besides the seasonings for the fries). The location is a bit hard to see, so keep an eye open for the menu on the wall. Their menu is relatively small with only fried fish, fried shrimp( a new addition), chips (fries), and a couple drinks/desserts. However, everything they cook is delicious and extremely fresh. Therefore you will wait around 5-15 minutes for your food, but oh is it worth it. Fish (5/5): I have yet to find a fish fried this perfectly. They use beer-battered Atlantic Cod and it is perfection. The outside is crisp, yet the inside is extremely moist and tender. This is the star of the plate and I have no complaints besides not having more. Fries (5/5): The fries are usually just a side at most fish and chip places, however this place makes it a core part of the meal. They have thick hand cut fries that can be seasoned any way you want! They have over 10 different seasonings that you can mix and match. My personal favorite is the fire-roasted garlic, fresh tangy lime, and wild jalapeno mixed. If you get the fish and chips plate you get a HEAPING mound of fries, so be prepared to share or to be in a food coma. Tarter Sauce (5/5): Just have to note that every time I get fish and chips I get two sides of tarter sauce because it pairs perfectly (obviously). I wish they would give 3 because I always run out before I finish the fish. Overall this place is amazing and well worth their high rating. Let me start by saying I'm from the East coast and I'm very picky and particular about my seafood. This tiny literal hole in the wall fish and chips place is one of the food highlights of my trip. Could I have come on a bad day? Wee Choppy is one place I've been meaning to try for a long time. Two international foods elude me here in The United States. The first is proper English Fish and Chips ... The second is a Greek Gyro. It is impossible to find a similar version of either. (Cod Mother Fish and Chips in Fisherman's Wharf SF is the best I've found ... Lobster Roll North in Wading River, NY is also close.) To cut to the chase the fresh fries here are among the best I've ever had. Hence the 3 stars. The fish sadly sucked. It was literally saturated with what tasted like olive oil. So much so that under the batter was a layer of yellow slick oil. The coating was incredibly crunchy and hard. It was almost hard to bite into. After a couple bites of the fish, I gave up and tossed it. Probably one of the worst I've had. Having said that, I'd come back here for the fries any day! They are not battered, hand cut from fresh potato's and seasoned fairly well with a choice of salts. You also get a few dipping sauce choices. I can't imagine coming to Venice Beach without getting an order of these. Skip the fish. The counter staff was apathetic to say the least. I was told each order is prepared to order and it would take 10 minutes to make ... There aren't many places to sit so I stood near the window. 15 minutes went by and I peeked my head in to see a box on the counter while the employees talked to a friend who stopped by. I asked if that was my order and they looked at the ticket and said 'yep.' and handed it to me. Who knows how long it was sitting there while they chatted. Overall I'd say the fish was 1 star, employee interaction was 1 star, location and lack of seating was 1 star. Fries were 5 stars. So I'll average it out generously at 3 stars. My sister and I came here today and had the best Gluten free fish and chippy's meal around. At first I approached the menu and thought it was a bit pricey for a Togo meal @$16.99. My sister said nehhh! Let's order. We each ordered the same meal. It came out ten minutes later. I opened the box and it was a few large portion of fish and a huge stack of what it looked to be home made chips. It was the best fish and chips I've ever had. First I tried in LA and I don't need to try anywhere new! I love this chippy seasoned to perfection flavorful fish, their sauces are unbelievable, chips are so flavorful crispy and somehow juicy at the same time.... this was magic in my mouth I love everything about this place I'll wait any amount of time for them. if the wee chippy is reading this, you should make your fish portion equal to your chip portion or EVEN like 3 or 4 pieces of fish instead of just 2. It's the best in LA for fish n chips. That's right, the whole of LA. I have tried them all. The only thing they re missing is mushy peas.

The shrimp and chips were fantastic, especially the chips which I could not stop eating after my first bite! The meal comes with what seems like a MOUNTAIN of chips which is great. The batter on the fish & chips on the other hand did not have as much flavor as I was expecting and relied heavily on the malt vinegar & sauces to give it any sort of saltiness. They have a number of options and you basically customize your meal by choosing which condiments and rubs come with your seafood. I opted for a seafood combo for $18.50 and got their fish and calamari. Very generous portions, and perfectly cut and seasoned fries. My only qualm is that a few times during the pandemic, they've been inconsistent with their hours and have not been receptive to phone calls, even when they said they were open (the storefront was closed). Wowzers this is good fish and chips. Just enough batter so you are getting mostly fish. The fish is crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked, not wet or greasy at all. The homemade sauces we had, chipoltle mayo and tartar sauce were both excellent. The hand cut fresh fries were awesome and also cooked perfect. It's fresh so the wait is about 15 minutes but it's worth it . Parking sucks close, there is a lot two short blocks down but my wife dropped me off and hung out in the side alley while I waited and it worked for us. read more

After reading about the Wee Chippy in LA Weekly, I wondered why I hadn't discovered this place sooner. Decent eating options on the Venice Beach Boardwalk are kind of far and few between despite there being a plethora of them - most are pretty mediocre. Wee Chippy makes only one thing - fish and chips (although you can order ala carte). Their fish is made with real Atlantic Cod (many other places use frozen or inferior fish), and is breaded to perfection. they also have a decent french fry and truffle fry but in the fry department I've had better...although Wee Chippy's is more than acceptable. Prices are very reasonable - don't quote me on this but two pieces of fish and fries are $12 - and so much more authentic and tasty than many other places, some of which cost the same or more. If you're thinking about Fish and chips on the Venice Beach boardwalk, don't even think of going anywhere else. one gripe - they need more seating! read more

I came here during the CicLaVia event, cycled from Culver City to Venice Beach, hungry for some seafood. I am so glad I came across this hidden gem. I didn't even bust out my phone to Yelp a place! Their menu is simple and only offer a few options, however, I was sort of overwhelmed by the amount of flavor options they have for your chips. I asked them what they recommend. I remember one being the garlic and the other being rosemary. Since I know what garlic chips would taste like, I decided to order mine with rosemary seasoning. I didn't think the rosemary seasoning was overpowering at all and their chips are super delicious, fresh, and crispy. The fish was amazing as well. It was light and crispy. A little splash of lemon juice with some tartar sauce makes it so perfect. Writing this review and thinking about how delicious it was is making my mouth water. read more

Tried the Calamari, Fish and SHRIMP. Shrimp was my favorite, calamari pretty good/standard. Fish was fine as well but by the shape and thickness of it looked as if we're prepackaged from a company and not fresh, which was a little disappointing considering it's right on the ocean. Still good though. I got a good taste of everything and to my dismay.... I found a brown medium length HAIR in the to go box. You know, it happens. We're HUMANS we have hair... they all looked like very clean people and the inside was very tidy as well so having already filled up... I was going to give the rest of the fish to my dog. Guess what. Walking around Venice Beach can be overwhelming with the amount of options readily available to treat your taste buds, so it's easy to miss this place. However, take a chance and find it. I'm big on fish n chips, so I had to give this place a shot. They have some a frames making some big claims, so I had to put it to the test; no regrets. Their fries are pretty good. Their fish is also not bad. I ordered the fish n chips combo and it filled me up quickly. You can choose different flavor/seasonings on your fries, so play around with the flavors and post the results because I'm still curious and want to try more. Awhile back, The Wee Chippy was featured on a Yelp email I received which featured restaurants serving fish and chips. Ever since then, I've bookmarked The Wee Chippy even though parking in Venice is torture. The restaurant is very modest in that you walk up to the half door/window and order. The guy working was very friendly and outgoing. I tried the fish and chips with the organic ketchup and tartar sauce. Of course, they forgot the cole slaw which was supposed to be included. The fish had a nice, crunchy coating and the fries were plentiful and very good with the skin still on. Although overall the fish and chips were good, I don't think I'd make a special trip here and deal with the tough parking situation and tourists. read more
