When you walk in, there is a giant cement staircase and plant wall that all just looks SUPER cool. I am pregnant and needed to use the elevator, so I had to walk through the building. I was able to see into several different makerspaces and watch people work with wood and 3D printing. Once upstairs for the event, I found myself in more of an office/large lobbies area with an event space sort of like a garage. It was the perfect location for this event and I was excited to get to check it out.

UC has been adding various types of makerspaces across​ the campus but they are piecemeal​ and of varying​ quality. I am a bit concerned​ about its distance from the main campus; I understand the UC is running out of room on the main campus, but I hope this is not an indication of a trend. They have done a good job of making it open to all, ​but I hope that it does not separate​ itself from the university. I can imagine a time in the near future where this area becomes like the ​medical campus for main campus students, a place where they rarely​ venture and is not really intended for them.

I was actually able to take a free tour here and learn about This place while on a parent Led 8th grade class graduation celebration for my oldest daughters class. Part of the celebration was to take a limo ride over to the NoCo area to take photos and selfies with the awesome public art scene. While walking around a worker From maker 13 stopped us and asked us if we wanted to come in and take a tour on This surprisingly chilly late April evening. The kids and parents all obliged and we really enjoyed the tour. The kids were very attentive and asked a lot of good questions about the program and got to witness some local artist perform their work and craft. The studio is basically a rent an office place for artists ranging from designers, computer techs, wood workers and other skills im not familiar with. They do offer summer program and things for youth to come in and work and have a space as well. While on the tour they did have some sodas and snacks for sell which all the hungry teenagers obliged in as well. Overall a very cool and unexpected trip and tour on the kids memorable and fun graduation day. I know for a fact that this tour was a highlight and memory for a lot of the parents and kids. So very cool of them to share their space and knowledge with all of us.

FirstBuild is owned by GE, but opens the space up to the public in the evenings and Saturday mornings. They post their upcoming classes on Facebook and on their website and signing up online is easy. Make sure to note the time and date of your class. I didn't receive any text or email reminders after the purchase confirmation. I've attended the Power Tools 101 and the Woodworking 101 classes. Prices for both were incredibly reasonable. Instructors for both were awesome. You can tell they care about the mission of helping people create and build things while using the equipment safely. Along with the power tools you can use in the co-working makerspace, there's a 3-D printer and laser cutter available. If you want to use the woodworking equipment outside of class time, you'll need to take their certification class. Everyone I met was super welcoming. Very Louisville Tool Library vibes. Highly recommend. FirstBuild is next to UofL's Belknap campus. They have designated parking spaces. I had zero issues finding spots near the door.

I'd only bought clay from a Ceramics Store or Michaels in the past, so a formal ceramics store was *~*InTiMiDaTiNg*~* (I'm not a real artist ya'll)!!! I'd taken some impromptu lessons in a makerspace with Wichita State University Ceramics Adjunct Prof. Susan DeWitt (and she was an invaluable & loving guide!!)-- but no critiqued or graded courses! Buckeye Ceramics Supply staff is knowledgeable, friendly (once they warm up to you ) and reliable! Susan Mahoney ( I was blessed with TWO SUE's in the god craft of Pottery) -- while she worked here was a graceful and warm representative; I love that having an account at Buckeye Ceramics helps me organize my inventory and track my firings (They call when a piece of artwork has an issue in the Kiln, or when your artwork successfully completes firing). They offer studio memberships at attractive and fair rates for a compared metro area. Seasonally they give away freebies as they clean out the glazes etc from the studio workshop/classroom. Hey Introverts! Since I've been a customer I've seen their stocking change to include small local/artisan made tools which I LOVE! For example: Dirty Girls Bats. Hopefully one day they'll have Garrity Tools, or Elan Transfers, Plum Island etc etc.. but you never know what you'll find unless you frequent! We potters are super lucky to have the Mayco factory and their storefront,Buckeye Ceramics, in our city! Lots of great classes and they bring well known artists in to teach workshops. There was a playdoh station, play house station, leprechaun trap art station, colored rice station, spin art and a sand station. And more! My kids totally loved it and stayed busy the whole time. We will definitely be coming back for another play time! The place was clean, the staff was helpful, bathroom was clean and the front part of the studio has a cute toy shop with lots of cute toys to choose from. The price was $20 per kid which I think is a decent price for the activities!

My son and I attended a birthday party at Create Studio this past weekend and had a great time!…read more There is plenty of meter parking around the area, and since it was the weekend it was free! The entrance to Create is a toy store and it looked like they had a lot of fun items- I will definitely be back when looking for kids gifts. We were welcomed by the owners through the lego rainbow to join the party. My son was immediately so excited about all the fun activities that were set up! There were 3 sensory/play bins, a play dough station, and an art station arranged with tons of supplies for the party-goers to paint a doughnut. My son is a year and a half so he was mainly into the sensory bins. There was also a giant "cake" set up with colored shaving cream "paint" so the attendees could decorate the cake. I was a little worried that my son was making such a mess being pretty young, but the owners were really chill about it and encouraged him to participate! We had a great experience and I would love to go back to Create!
