Nice service. Attentive yet usually no pressure. Many styles of shoes, almost all of them are comfortable. I come here for dress shoes for work (Munro) and sneakers (new balance) although I didn't see any sneakers today. I also like their line of Stonefly shoes. When I got my Munros and they didn't fit exactly, the manager put in inserts that made it perfect. They also have nice socks. Come here to browse and try shoes on. The Walk Shop is a North Berkeley institution that tends toward the expensive side, although they have a good selection of mostly high quality shoes. I have shopped there happily for many years, even though their prices can be rather high. However, the last time I went there, it seems to have declined, with the emphasis being on quick sales and ensuring that returns are difficult. My sense is that they, like many other stores, are suffering from the economics of the pandemic and are not getting much traffic into the store. I do think they should rethink their strategy so they don't lose customers once this plague ends. read more

I suggest you don't shop at The Walk Shop in Berkeley. I spent $150 on a pair of shoes, wore them one time when something spilled on them leaving an ugly stain. I went back to the store to explain this to the manager and asked him to help me; he sneered at me and said he couldn't do anything about the stain because it was my fault; he told me to take the shoes to a shoe repair shop at my own expense. He was condescending and raised his voice to embarrass me in front of the other employees and customers. His attitude toward me was disdainful; I felt sickened and humiliated. I did some research; I called the shoemaker and found out this particular shoe needed to be "treated" before wear, either by the store or the consumer and that the salesman should have advised me this when I made the purchase. I also went to another store carrying the same shoe and spoke to the manager who said, "after we sell this shoe, we treat it for the customer." I received good customer service at the Walk Shop's competitor and purchased two pairs of sandals spending $250.00. Too bad Walk Shop manager; your sarcastic, demeaning demeanor drove me away after one visit; you will never receive a good referral and the only recommendation you will receive is that people shouldn't shop in your store. read more

Poor customer service. I went in 3/13 to buy another pair of shoes in blue. I thought I had purchased the blue in September but it turned out to be olive green. The blue was out of stock. I was told it would take up to 3 weeks before the special order would arrive. I explained that I was going on a trip at the end of the month. I was not going to order if I was not guaranteed it would arrive before the end of the month. I was assured over and over that the shoes would arrive but to be safe, they always say 3 weeks. I had my daughter call on 3/20 because I was driving past Berkeley. I was hoping that by some miracle the shoes would be in. I could not call because I was numb from the dentist. My daughter told me she was told," Do not call back. We will call you when the shoes arrive." Rude. Today, 3/28, I call because I have not heard anything and my husband offered to stop on his way home from work. The sales clerk said," just a minute I have to check on something. I will call you back." When he called back, he said,"I am sorry those shoes have been discontinued. I looked in the back. I even called Dansko. They told me the color is discontinued. A new blue will come at the middle of next month." To which I replied,"And when was I going to be notified of this?" He hemmed and hawed and replied," we go through the binder periodically." To which I told him when I placed the order, I explained that I was going on a trip. I explained that I needed the shoes before the end of the month. You are just telling me NOW that I am not going to get them. He offered a full refund or I could come to the store to choose another pair. When I asked when I would get my money back, I was told the accountant was on vacation until next week. He could have the owner write a check on Monday and I could come pick it up. My mom, the world's foremost connoisseur of comfort shoes, digs this store. Sometimes when she shops here I come along, not because I like The Walk Shop's shoes, but because I like Peet's coffee and there is a Peet's next door, and if I am nice and patient and humor her as she agonizes over a pair of patent leather Birkenstocks, she will buy me a soy latte and a vegan ginger cookie. Nonetheless, I make it perfectly clear to my mother that, while I drink soy lattes and eat vegan cookies, I retired my Birks the day Jerry Garcia died. And even in my dirtiest, hippiest days, I've never, ever worn Tevas. Say what you will about Birkenstocks, but Tevas are the footwear equivalent to the band Phish. Bottom line: I don't do the ugly comfort shoe thing anymore. Of course, there is an exception to every rule. Some time ago, on one of these Walk Shop visits with mom, I spotted a unique pair of Dansko clogs. They were black suede with a colorful patterned material not unlike African kente cloth sewn onto the front of the shoe. My mother encouraged me to try them on, reminding me, as she often does, that if I don't start wearing more sensible footwear, I will end up with a Morton's neuroma. Or at the very least, a bad bunion problem. So I tried them on. So comfy. And cute...right? Right? *looks down at shoes* Anyway, I fell for them. Sure, I don't wear *that* kind of footwear usually, but something about them seemed acceptable. I told myself they were fabulously bohemian chic, and brought them up to the register where I asked the saleswoman to toss the unorthopedically correct but oh-so-hot Michael Kors platforms I'd been wearing earlier into a shopping bag. I wore the Dansko clogs home. I wore those clogs almost every day for a while. Sure, they were technically "comfort shoes", but they were made with that funky unique print. I kept telling myself that I looked fabulously bohemian. It was my mantra. *inhale* IamfabulouslybohemianIamfabulouslybohemianIamfabulouslybohemian. *exhale* Like an older, twinless, more-ethnic, less-anorexic Mary Kate Olson, if you will. I don't normally write reviews, if you look at my history, you'll see it's been years since I wrote a review and the majority of them are positive at that. I have to say, all the negative reviews posted here are accurate. Selena, the sales woman who helped me today, was incredibly rude. I leave next week for Japan and I need a good pair of walking shoes. She dropped me for the next customer and scolded me repeatedly because I was putting shoes back in their boxes and/or taking too long to decide between styles. At one point she said, "Just leave them! Put them down! And can you please tell me what you want so I don't have to keep going in the back? It's extra work." I spent a large amount on shoes today, nearly $400; but I'm so nonplussed by her treatment, I'm taking the shoes back tomorrow and buying the shoes from Zappos instead. It would be nice to shop locally, but I honestly don't want to give the store any money after the way she treated me and the best way to speak up is to vote with my pocketbook. It's a shame, I like a lot of their shoes and would've been a loyal customer, but the level of rudeness really is untenable. I appreciate a respectful attitude in salespeople. The fancy clothing shop a few doors down, mentioned in other reviews, also carry shoes and although their selection is small, they have nice salespeople. I am always in search of good comfortable shoes. I visited the store on a Saturday morning, and they were quite busy. They have quite a few selections for women casual and a few for women work. The salesman who helped me was extremely pushy. He would yell (literally) "Yes, that is perfect on you" for every pair of shoes that I tried on. It got quite embarrassing and annoying after a while. He was very pushy. One pair of dress shoes was not a good fit: narrow width and little long for me. I mentioned it to him, but he insisted that they will "mold to my feet". He guarantees it. I ended up buying 3 pairs of shoes from them: 1 dressy and 2 casual. Now that it has been many months, the dress shoe ($200) did not mold to my feet. So, I'm walking around with this pair of shoe almost falling off from my feet every time I take a step. :-( I will not go back there again. read more

I have recently started walking and starting experiencing pain because of my feet flat. I did some research online and discovered that I needed motion control shoes. I made a special trip to Berkeley to The Walk Shop because I hoped they would be helpful in getting me a proper shoe and would have a good selection. However, when I got to the store it was difficult to get someone to help me and when I did find someone, he laughed at me when I said I needed motion control shoes and asked me if I had got a "doctor's opinion" (umm I think I know better than you about my feet). Then he showed me the only pair of motion control shoes they had in the store. I went in here looking for some boots, but I have size 6.5 WW feet and I use prescription orthotics, so I need shoes with removable footbeds. Though this store claims to cater to customers of all different sizes, they apparently only had one pair of short boots in my size, and a pair of taller boots in size 7 WW, which ended up being both too long and too narrow. I know this because the salesperson went back and grabbed the boots without even asking me what style I liked. He was pushy and I tried them on anyway, and when I said I didn't like them, he was very happy to put them away quickly so he could complete a sale with another customer--only, my orthotics were still inside the boots! I would love to support local businesses, but the lack of sizes and the terrible service during this visit only reminded me why I started buying shoes online. read more

I rebuke any negative review of this place! My 79 year old aunt told me about this store and my mother bought a pair of shoes here, then I went and purchased 2 pairs of shoes. I raved about it so much that my cousin came and got her a pair too! Each of us have serious foot issues and we received individualized, expert advice and service, and are all so happy as a result! I have post tibial dysfunction and have not been able to exercise in a few years. After I purchased my shoes and told them about my problem feet I got a pair of Hokas and dansko and have started walking and exercising and feeling amazing! Everyone is so talented, friendly and truly passionate about YOUR feet. With everyone purchasing things online and sales representatives being so ill-informed about what they're selling, this place is so refreshing! Like many customers, I'd had very poor customer or client-care service the many times I'd walked into the Walk Shop. Four times out of five, I've been COMPLETELY ignored by the sales staff while I looked for some type of shoe or other. (Completely ignored, that is, while I seemed to see salespeople virtually descend on other potential customers....) But the other day I decided to paste on my stiff upper lip and go purchase a pair of La Canadienne boots that I'd seen--really needed a pair of boots that would work in the rain but still look professional, not cutesy UCal-legiate. So I told my husband that I'd go brave The Walk Shop, and I walked off. Got to the place. Did about ten minutes of very localized, intent browsing (comparing one pair of La Canadiennes to another) without a single salesperson coming up to me or even, it would seem, noticing. Tried to catch the eye of one or two of them (who were not helping other customers) but they were relating to each other in a way that closed me out. Then two women walked into the shop and, from deep in the back of the store, one of the salesmen made a beeline for them and asked if he could help them. When told that they were "just browsing," he began to return to the back of the store, passing me by for the second time. I hailed him with a "But you can help ME!" Perhaps being helped by him was worse than being ignored. He was unbelievably aggressive in "selling" the shoe, almost yelling at me as though I were hearing challenged or stupid. I concretized my stiff upper lip because I really needed the boots. Finally, I bought them ($350.00 with tax) with no joy or satisfaction whatsoever and left. When I got home, just a few blocks away, I felt so icky. Not only did I part with $350.00, but did so after being so "disappeared" by the store, rendered so invisible. What was funny was that I'd presaged the particular experience before I went. I don't know if I was ignored because I'm Filipina (the two women who entered the store sometime after I did were Caucasian) or if I didn't look rich enough to serve (although I was wearing my Patagucci down jacket and Sanita Mary Janes) or what. (The salesman who flew to help the two women was Filipino himself... but maybe I reminded him of his maid back in the Philippines.) Needless to say, twelve hours later, I brought the boots back. I asked for a refund and then gave the manager feedback on why I returned them. To his credit--and the only reason I'm giving the store any stars at all--he listened respectfully to what I had to say (he hadn't been there the night before), was not the least bit defensive, and said he was appreciative of my feedback. I would give HIM five stars. He also gave me his business card on which he scrawled a "15% off" discount on any pair of shoes for my use if I ever decided to visit the store again. (Not sure I would, actually.) Fun fact? After I'd taken the shoes back and got my $350.00 back, I went online on a lark. Found the same boots on Amazon for $157.00 LESS! read more

This comfy shoe store has a broad array of styles for men and women for casual and work purposes. I've purchased shoes for myself and my dad here before. The one thing that has been consistent is that the service can be a bit aloof. The advice that is given isn't consistent either. It's as if their staff has one or two knowledgeable folks who aren't the friendliest, a few others who know how to retrieve shoes but aren't friendly or knowledgeable, and one (yes one) who is friendly but looks as if she'd rather be getting a root canal. That being said, they have the best selection of Pikolinos in the Bay Area. Know what you want when you go in, be prepared to be ignored or rushed, and fork over a good amount of dinero. One word to the wise: check to see if Elmwood Village Shoes has the pair you're looking for. They tend to be cheaper and the service is a lot warmer. read more

UPDATE, August 2009: So I reluctantly go back, only because I didn't want to drive and take the time to go to one of the other high-end shoe shops in the area. So I did end up buying a pair of sandals. And then, like a fool, checked prices online when I got back. I don't expect shop-retailers to be cheaper than online, and I do want to shop local, but I was surprised to see that Walk Shop was priced higher even than the manufacturer's SRP, and needless to say $30 to $50 higher than online. Shop around, especially if you want warm and fuzzy customer service, as this place gives off a really unfriendly hurry-up-and-buy-it already vibe. Every time I put on my pair of expensive Walk Shop shoes I remember the unctuous guy who sold them to me and the store's unwillingness to admit to selling me a pair of ill-fitting footwear. They tried to repair the problem by rebuilding part of the top, but that didn't help, and when I called the shoe manufacturer they said they were horrified that the Walk Shop would just go ahead and start reconstructing their product without checking with them first. I know I should have fought harder over a pair of $160 shoes, but I confess I just didn't have the time or energy. And the salesman could not have been less concerned. I think I got the dud there, as the other reviews suggest that the staff is knowledgeable, if not exactly customer friendly. read more

OK, I admit it - I'm writing a 5* review to balance out some of the negative reviews, because I really don't get the "pushy salesperson" comments. I've popped in here to check out the inventory for years and bought several pair of shoes during that time. In nearly every visit, a salesperson has greeted me within a few moments and asked if they could help. That's not pushy, that's good service! If I was just browsing, and said so, they said something like "Let me know if I can help" and walked away. If I was looking for something specific, or I browsed & saw something I wanted to try, I could easily get their attention. The last pair I bought, I wasn't sure about, and the salesperson said I could take it home & return it within a week if I didn't want it. Again, not pushy, that's good business! (I kept the shoes). The shoes: comfy and well-made is their stock. You can walk in their shoes. The Walk Shop. Not The Look Cool While You're Dancing Until Your Feet Hurt Shop. That said, I DO like my shoes to look somewhat fashionable and unique, and I like the edgy, European look - they have it. $20 ABOVE MANUFACTURER'S LIST PRICE I bought a pair of casual hiking boots from the Walk Shop for $175, then checked online when I got home and found out that THEY LISTED FOR $155 and were available for around $90. Plus, the sales lady was making stuff up about how hiking boots work. She seemed a little desperate for me to buy the boots. I'm thinking they get leaned on hard by the boss/owner/whatever. I won't be going back. THE OWNER'S REPLY, BELOW, IS CRAP He's saying the big, bad Internet is undercutting poor, rent-paying retail stores like his and claiming that they follow mfgr's suggested list prices. BULL. The boots I bought were priced $20 ABOVE LIST. Manufacturer's list gives retailers plenty of room for discounts, and charging full list price pretty much guarantees a profit. The Walk Shop got away with gouging its customers for years. Now that the Web has made it easy to compare prices, the jig is up. Don't listen to the crap about great service, either; the sales people here are jerks, and they don't know anything special about fitting shoes that any other shoe store's people don't know. Back when I was a wee young thing, my mother used to buy her shoes here. Because of this, I always assumed I'd need to reach a certain age before shopping here. Well, turns out I reached that age, and my feet can no longer handle crapy shoes. As many have noted, this place does not stock trendy heels, but they do have an amazing selection of really cute and incredibly comfortable shoes. I came in looking for sandals and heels that I could wear all day (I walk a lot for work) that wouldn't make me look like a grandmother and came out with two great pairs. The gentlemen that helped me was a delight! He was incredibly patient, sat with me and put the shoes on for me (I know this might seem odd to some people, but this is how it used to be in small shoe stores everywhere, and I like the personal touch), and seemed to have excellent knowledge about the shoes. He was able to suggest things I wouldn't have thought of that fit much better than what I had picked out. Their shoes aren't cheap, but they are beautiful and well made, and I would much rather support these folks than Zappos or Nordstrom. read more

Great shoes, pushy and somewhat brusque salesperson. I am never convinced to buy something as a result of aggressive sales pressure; in this case, I bought the shoes despite the salesman's off-putting approach. As it turns out, these shoes are not as comfortable as I'd hoped. They hurt around the outsides. I called back to ask about this, and the salesperson did offer to try to help if I could come in, but I don't live nearby and won't be able to stop by soon. It's not that I expected a different outcome -- just a more empathetic and finessed approach from the sales associate. I bought a pair of Danskos here as a Christmas gift for my partner. She wears a size 12W, so I made sure before purchase that if the particular pair I chose didn't fit properly, that there was a decent selection of comparable shoes from which she could choose a replacement. The staff assured me there was, and I happily made my purchase. Well, they didn't fit, and back we went today. It turns out that a "decent selection" of shoes actually meant about five pairs in the whole store, and none of them in a pretty style or color similar to the ones I originally purchased. I appreciate the staff's willingness to accommodate me with the return, particularly as I'd misplaced the receipt; they re-generated it without issue, and gave me a full refund without questions. I understand that a small store can't be expected to carry every shoe in every size, particularly those that are on the outer edges of the spectrum, size-wise. However, I'm disappointed with the minimal options available, particularly when I'd asked that question specifically prior to purchase. I felt somewhat rushed along today when my partner was trying on the few pairs that did come in her size, and would have appreciated if the staff had made some recommendations about where else we might find a better selection, or what brands tend to make larger sizes. Once it became clear that nothing they had in stock was suitable, we were ushered to the register to complete the refund without delay. To paraphrase another reviewer here, a more empathetic and finessed approach would have made this experience easier to swallow. I've been buying my shoes from the Walk Shop for many years. I first went there because I had discovered that if I wanted comfortable, well-fitting shoes that could keep my feet happy I was going to need more sales knowledge than what could be found at Target or Payless Shoe Source. I'd bought cheap tennis shoes from these places and they'd literally rot off my feet after a few months! The Walk Shop had been recommended to me so I decided to check them out. I'd been warned about the prices, but I had a credit card and sore feet so I was ready! I explained my job activities to the clerk (7 to 13 hour days, 75-80% of which is spent walking or standing on a hardwood floor) and was recommended Ecco Walkers and SAS Time Outs. They fit like a dream! From the moment my tired bones slid inside, I felt like I was walking on clouds! I left a little deeper in debt, but very happy in the certain knowledge that though my psyche might be sore from dealing with a sometimes unappreciative public, at least my feet would always be happy. Four years later and it was time for another visit. However, this time I was hoping I could keep the cost down and still find a great fitting shoe from their wide selection. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a mistake. The main lesson I learned from the following story is: if you find something that works, don't mess with it! I explained my work situation again and my desire to keep the cost closer to $100 a pair (SAS Time Outs are ~ $180 a pair). The clerk recommended Clarks and they seemed to fit great, so I bought three pairs of them and a pair of Keens. However, the fit problems began the next day. The heel on the Clarks is not very deep and the insides are leather. The net effect was that even with the laces tight, my heels would slip up and down with each step, a very distracting and frustrating sensation! To make matters worse, the fabric of my sock was being pulled down and folded under my left heel, making the discomfort even worse. I thought perhaps it might be the socks, as they were a Target brand designed to fit a wide range of sizes and had always been a bit too big. They were also getting old and weren't so soft anymore. Time for new socks! The new ones (also bought at Target) were definitely an improvement as they were a much tighter fit and the fabric no longer folded under my heel, but the nagging up-and-down motion was still there! In addition, the insole of the shoe was made from leather and a soft kind of vinyl or plastic. I could feel the difference in how these two different materials compressed when I walked, and it STILL felt like there was something in my shoe! AAAH! The Walk Shop's return policy is within 7 days, in new condition, with receipt. I went back on the seventh day and politely but earnestly explained the difficulties I was having. They suggested tongue pads, which are oval-shaped adhesive cushioned pads that attach to the tongue to more firmly seat the heel in the back of the shoe. That seemed to solve the problem. However, when I tried them again at work the next day, the same up-and-down heel motion continued to dog me. I couldn't tie the laces any tighter without cutting off my circulation! Even though I'd exceeded the 7 day return policy, I went back a few days later with a bellyful of anxiety because I knew that these shoes just didn't fit me. I also knew that if they refused a refund or exchange, I'd be out of a substantial cash outlay that wouldn't be possible for quite some time! To my great relief, everything worked out beautifully! I brought all three pairs with me and again politely yet earnestly explained to Stu (the store manager) that even though everything had been tried, these shoes just didn't fit me. I requested to return them and apply the credit towards the SAS Time Outs which had worked so well in the past. Stu's exact words were: "I'd be glad to do whatever makes you happy." Now of course he knew that the money I'd already spent would stay in the store AND that I'd be spending a little more due to the higher cost of the Time Outs I was going to purchase. But why not?! After all, I'd asked nicely. I thanked Stu several times not only because I was going home satisfied, but because I also overheard that they had some work ahead of them to return the Clarks to saleable condition. I had an ok experience at the Walk shop. I have a very hard time finding shoes to fit my super thin feet (size 9). I found 2 pair that fit well...not really the colors I had hoped to get, but at least they fit.The sales person was talking so much trying to sale me the shoes, it never occurred to me to look more closely at each shoe. When I arrived home I discovered scratches and marks on one of the shoes......As nice as it is to have a Super Super helpful sales person, I would really prefer to put on and take off the shoes Myself. If I shop there again I will inspect the shoe at the register where I can see any imperfections. read more

I'm young and sort of grungy looking so I didn't expect to be taken seriously but the woman serving me was patient and informative. I got very pretty leather shoes that I loved (maybe too much). Months later I was rushing down the stairs for work, and I tripped. The combination of the angle of my shoe in the space between the stairs and the guava pastry in my hand resulted in my lurching forward. Sadly one shoe stayed behind. I had ripped one beautiful leather shoe. Months later I finally went back to the store with my torn worn out shoes. I was hoping they would fix them but they replaced them with a brand new pair FREE OF CHARGE. this does not happen normally! My sister bought me an $800 Michael Kors bag (insane but thoughtful). The zipper portion ripped a bit and this designer corporation refused to just fix it. The Walk Shop, in contrast, did not hesitate to replace my torn up shoes. I have a hard time finding comfortable shoes, but this place made it so easy. The salesperson Richard was amazingly helpful and friendly and helped me find exactly what I needed. He suggested shoes with good arch support and found me the right inserts to make them even better. They have a lot of different styles and really good brands. I purchased very expensive shoes from the Walk Shop. After one month of wearing the shoes (with minimal ware), not only did the inner lining fall out but there was a hole at the tip of the shoe. One month after my purchase, I took the shoes back expecting an exchange or return due to the poor quality of the shoes. I had no such luck, the manager told me that all he can do is shine the shoes for me... Not sure how shinning these shoes will fix the hole?!? He basically told me I was out of luck and there's nothing that can be done. With their high prices they should reconsider their policy. I will be making all future purchases at Nordstroms or other retailers that have a higher level of customer service. read more

Friendly, knowledgeable staff. This store carries a wide range of comfy yet stylish shoes: two of the brands I remember are Ecco and Birkenstock (ok, "stylish" is a stretch with Birk's). I got my absolute most favorite shoes here years ago, and if I didn't work near Nordstrom's in SF, I'd come here more often. Most men's shoes are in the $100 - $160 range. They don't have sales that I've seen, so you're paying list price. That's the only reason I give them four stars instead of five. read more

I was in this store last week and had a wonderful experience and had the best sales person; MIckey. This is not only an amazing store In terms of having all the best brands styles and sizes, but it is a reminder of when we were offered genuine service in days gone by. I haven't had someone actually put a shoe on me since I was a little girl and I have to tell you it felt wonderful to be so taken care of. Mickey must've brought out at least 10 pairs of shoes for me to try on and was cheerful and informative and helpful the entire time.
