My first trip ever to The Walk Shop was a week ago. I walked in and told the salesperson that I had just been diagnosed with metatarsalgia. She said, "we can help," and they did. A couple of months ago I purchased a very expensive pair of walking shoes as was recommended by one of the employees there (very nice young man) I had recently been diagnosed with Plantar Fasciitis and needed some shoes that would help me at work because I am in the field at work most days. After trying on several pair, the Brooks brand seem to work the best. It was also recommended that I invest in a pair of insoles to help since I am told I have flat feet. Well I tried these shoes and with or without the insoles, they make my foot hurt even more. Today I decided to give them one more try and absolutely No Success. While wearing these today in the field, my back began to hurt and my foot as well. When I got back to my office and switched to my Skechers work shoes, my foot feels 100 times better. Its a little upsetting because I dont think I can return them since its been a couple of months. So Im just out of almost $200 for a pair of shoes that are doing nothing for my foot/feet. I have purchased other shoes at this company that were not for work and I love them so I dont want to give a bad review because I have had a good experience with The Walk Shop. Love this place! Women owned and very personable. I have bought shoes there in the past year and they fit wonderfully. I wanted sandals that were supportive and look great. At this point all I wear are Hoka shoes. The person who helped me brought out three sandals that felt so good. I bought 2. Then I went back looking for a nice closed toe shoes and she found two that fit me . I don't have any pain when I walk in any of them for a long time. She also suggested I wear an insert that was different from the Superfeet inserts that I'm used to. They were great. The people are great! Well, well, well...a response to a review written 9mos ago -- a review that I stand by to this day. I believe the salesperson understood the concept of *durable* which is why these particular boots were chosen. The seams literally split within 6mos of purchase. Indeed, I should have taken them back, but the boots lived in another state; the salesperson was adamant -at the time- about their 14-day return policy; and I was utterly disgusted. Dear delightful and overpriced shoe store, I simply delight in you. Here I have found the most beautiful leather booties the world has ever seen. They are supple & soft and fit my feet perfectly. Granted, at $250 a pop, I can only afford one pair per decade, but wow. Really, just wow. Dear everyone else, The Walk Shop is a local institution in North Berkeley. They offer sandals, ankle booties, boots, and walking shoes of all shapes and sizes. They aren't cheap but they are worth it. As one store employee said to me, "shoes are an investment in your health." I don't know that I'd word it quite that strongly, but these shoes are definitely an investment in something!! This time it's to praise the quality of the shoes The Walk Shop offers. I have many shoes from your store and I'm ALWAYS pleased! Two days ago, I realized I have a trip coming up and needed a new pair of comfortable black, semi-dress shoes. The only store I even considered going to was The Walk Shop! Once I arrived, in less than 10 minutes, I selected several different options, tried them on in my size, made a decision and was done with my purchase. Turns out I needed them for an event yesterday, too, and ended up having to do ALOT of unexpected walking and tons of going up and down stairs. NO PROBLEM!! My legs weren't even tired and I'm almost 67 years old! The right shoes make ALL the difference! And I swear that your prices have barely increased in the last few years. Even if I'd paid more, they are worth every penny! A GREAT value for an excellent look and comfort! I'll be back! read more

I used to love this store- started coming here in 2014 when I worked around the corner, and have been a more frequent visitor for the past 6 months when I moved to the East Bay. The staff is so helpful and attentive, and it is nice to find great quality shoes that actually fit (the staff know to measure your feet, give recommendations, etc.). So why am I giving this place one star? The ownership. I came in with shoes that were about a month old, that I have worn maybe 5 times total. I actually have two other pairs from this exact brand that I bought here and wore. However, these shoes are bright yellow. I bought them on a whim because they were cute. What a mistake. After the 5 wears, I noticed that the suede around the toe was peeling off. Also, I noticed that the shoes were actually too narrow for me, the other Rieker shoes fit better for some reason. So, I came into the store. Staff was helpful as usual- so helpful one gentleman called the owner on a Sunday (I am leaving abroad for a month) and asked if we could just do store credit or exchange the shoes. The owner refused, citing that the shoes were worn and nothing could be done. I try to be a proponent of small business, but this is one case that sucks. I paid over $100 for shoes I can't wear. If I were at Macy's or REI, they would have refunded me. It's not much, and my continued purchases show that I will be a loyal customer. Not here. The poor staff had their hands tied, and the owner refused to help me. Now I'm heading to Japan with a pair of unusable shoes. Oh well. You can't win them all, and these guys will never be winning my business again. I guess I'll just do what most of my millennial generation is doing- trying shoes on in store and buying them online. read more

I've been coming here for probably 20 years +. They have a good selection of shoes, and most notably an assortment for men. Most shoe stores have a paucity of quality and varied shoes for men which is disappointing. However, The Walk Shop carries a variety of quality and fashionable shoes for men. I purchased my first pair of Josef Seibel's here - perfect fit from the get go and they lasted more than 5 years. I've purchased many more pairs since. I also like the Pikolinos which are also of high quality and fashionable. Initially, the service was great and old fashion, meaning that they took the time to put the shoes on you correctly. Not like Footlocker and most other shoe stores where they just give give you the shoes for you to manage yourself getting them on. I appreciated the old fashion assistance and attention. That assistance and attention has been dropping off as of late, mainly from the younger sales people - a disappointment. Otherwise, the selection has remained great. read more

I bought THE perfect pair of Dansko shoes that I intended to use for my August trip to Amsterdam, Zurich and Geneva (for a 5-day dog show!). I wanted something that did not scream AMERICAN TOURIST. The shoes I bought are black, easy to put on and take off with firm soles and good arch support. I loved them so much I bought another pair. Little did I know then that I would have to cancel the trip and instead wear them for the past 3+ weeks for hospital visits, marching up and down hallways, looking for the cafeteria, etc. I come home exhausted every BUT my feet don't hurt! i grew up a few blocks from this place and came back the other day to look for a pair of flat-heeled boots that fit my slim calves. I have been searching far and wide for over a year and couldn't find anything that wasn't baggy around my legs and didn't have a heel. Destiny greeted me and helped me try on a pair of Remonte boots. They fit perfectly and my year long search is over! She was very friendly and helpful and knows her shoes. This store isn't cheap but definitely quality over quantity. I'd rather invest in a nice pair that will last and buy from a small business than buy cheap stuff online. Their selection is mostly walking shoes, like the name suggests. He has extreme edema problems with his feet & it's hard to get him from Castro Valley to Berkeley. Julian asked me to send him some photos of my father's feet and said he'd get back to me. Shortly after I emailed him he responded with a lengthy well thought out email. He took the time to help me with my problem, supplying me with different suggestions, places knowing I'd probably purchase shoes online or somewhere else. Who takes the time to do that anymore? I usually don't like to write bad reviews because it's people's livelihood. But when we went there to purchase a pair of shoes for my daughter we were first ignored. Once we were finally tended to, my daughter pointed at a damage to one side of a shoe. The lady who works for the shop took the pair back with box. She came back a few minutes with a box at the cashier. She started registering the shoe for payment. My daughter opened the box and noticed that it was the same pair with the slightly damaged one. Obviously we walked out. These people don't seem to be desperate, but their act was utterly dishonest. read more

I was sad to hear he had retired. But Anne really provided excellent service today and she was patient with me as I looked and looked. Kind of a disappointing visit today. I have been buying my work shoes at this store for years. Why? I work on my feet, 8+ hours a day, and this store sells very quality shoes that are perfect for someone in my case. I have been needing to replace my work shoes so I decided to try and purchase a pair today. I go in and this nice lady asks me to let her know if I have any questions. From my peripheral vision, I could tell she was "waiting" for me to come up to her. That made me feel uncomfortable so I purposely waited until she walked away to go up to her. I knew exactly which shoe I wanted to try on. She comes back and tells me that they are out of stock in my size - suggests I try a size lower than the one I needed. I knew that it wouldn't work. There was another customer who was also disappointed they didn't have her shoe available either so she just walked out. Very disappointing experience. I went into The Walk Shop looking for dress yet comfortable shoes. I dealt with a lady that didn't even offer to size my feet and directed me to old folks shoes with velcro straps. Insulting to say the least. I went to THE COBBLERS in Hayward, huge difference, they were able to special order shoes to my satisfaction. I usually shop at Nordstrom for suits and dress shoes but their service lacks the maturity and expertise of The Cobblers. I am recovering from a severe injury of the mid-foot (called a Lisfranc injury -- Google it if you dare). I wanted to make sure I did my homework before coming to a store, so I asked a forum of others recovering from this condition what shoe they had found most effective, and I made a list for myself. At the first store I tried (before The Walk Shop), I explained my situation, and mentioned the two or three brands that had been recommended to me. The salesperson at that store was very helpful and patient, but ultimately did not have the shoes I needed in my size. I went home and called The Walk Shop and spoke with Mickey. I asked her whether they carried the exact model I had tried at the other store (but in my size), and she told me they did not, so I stupidly thanked her and ended the call. A moment later, it occurred to me that perhaps they might have a different model that was similar, so I immediately called back and Mickey answered once again. "Oh, I'm so glad you called back!" she said, "I actually have a few I would recommend for you that I'm really confident you'll like." She patiently told me the details (some of them were already on my list!), and I drove over to The Walk Shop about an hour later. Mickey was not immediately available when I walked in, and I was greeted by a different salesman (my receipt says his name was James -- I hope I have that right). A few seconds later Mickey joined us. She remembered me perfectly from our conversation, and told James: "Mr. Jacobson needs to see a [brand and model], [brand and model], and [brand and model], gray, in a size 10 1/2 Wide." I was impressed with how attentively she had listened to me on the phone, and with how comprehensively she remembered the details of our conversation an hour later. James brought out the shoes that Mickey had recommended and waited patiently while I tried them on. He answered all of my questions and was very cordial and professional. Ultimately, I took the ones that were Mickey's first recommendation, and which were most similar to what I had tried in the other store. Altogether, a very pleasant and rewarding experience! This was my first and only visit to The Walk Shop. After listening to their radio ad every morning for months, I decided it was time I paid them a visit. I was very disappointed with the lack of "personal" attention. After being greeted by the clerk, I explained my particular concerns regarding my inability to find comfortable shoes. Bunions, arthritis, flat feet and need for a wide toe-box shoe are some of my main issues. In turn the layout of the store was explained to me and I was left to explore the shoes on my own. No recommendations were made. After selecting a few styles I was told none of them came in a wide width (note, their ad specifically states they have shoes in "many" widths) I asked if any styles came in a wide width. The clerk said no not really and that manufactures were not providing shoes in wide widths. He then proceeded to show me a pair of SAS shoes, I declined. You don't get a second chance to make a first impression. This is certainly true for this store! After leaving The Walk Shop, I went to Footwear, etc. in Walnut Creek (formerly Walkabout) where I was met by a very friendly clerk. As with The Walk Shop clerk I explained my foot issues. Unlike the clerk in The Walk Shop, I was shown some very comfortable shoes that accommodated my feet and addressed all my issues. After trying on his recommendations, I purchased both boots and Mary Janes. I give the Footwear, etc. store 5-Stars!! I will be returning to them for my future shoe needs! read more

Twice now, I've researched shoes online before going on a trip, fretting over reviews and fit and the hassles of returning by mail. Twice now, I've worried about experiencing the break-in pains during travels. Both times, I decided to duck into the Walk Shop to see what they have, and I've walked out in shoes that didn't need to be broken in at all. The store and window display seem to cater to people "d'un certain age," and it takes a few moments to zero-in on shoes that meet the style needs of people who don't self-identify as comfort shoe wearers. But be patient. Talk to the knowledgeable staff, let them fit your foot, and you will walk out in comfort and style. This is not the store to find cute strappy heels for a night out, but it is the store to find shoes that you wear every day to walk a lot in an city. As for style? I still get compliments on a pair of boots bought there over two years later. I will save myself hours and go there first next time. read more
