I entered this store with a goal of purchasing well-fitting walking shoes for a two week vacation that will involve lots of daily walking. I had the pleasure of meeting and receiving assistance from Brian. He is very knowledgeable and low key. For the first time, I had my feet scanned and he recommended the New Balance 960s. They fit great. They fit even better with insoles; Brian explained the benefits of swapping out insoles while traveling. Then I saw a cute pair of Dansko closed toe sandals. Tried those and they were perfect. And then I bought a Baggallini cross-body purse. Got a big discount on the purse, a discount for buying the insoles, and a great price on both pairs of shoes. This store has a small but purposeful selection. I really enjoyed my first visit and will be back! read more

My second time trying to shop here after a negative experience several years ago. I thought I'd give it another shot. I showed up on a Monday around 1:45 pm to look at shoes and there was a note on the door that said "out to lunch, back at 3 pm". I saw a couple people standing inside so I waved to them to see what was up. A young woman peeked her head out to let me know she was going on lunch, but she was extremely rude to me unfortunately. She suggested I hang out in the area and come back in an hour, but I just left and went back home. Partly because it's located on a super crowded street with a bunch of college kids, fast food chains, and smoke shops, but also because the employee was so rude I didn't want to work with her. They lost a potential customer that day. If you business closes in the middle of open hours for an hour plus lunch, why not list that in your hours online? It might save people from wasting their time. read more

A podiatrist suggested I go to Beck's to get some shoes and insoles to better support my feet/arches, and I was so pleasantly surprised by the assistance I received there. Victoriya was clearly very knowledgeable and helped me find everything I needed. I felt that she had genuine compassion for my situation and investment in getting proper support for my feet. I made my first visit to a Beck's this week, to the Berkeley store. I was frankly flabbergasted by the level of knowledge and the service I received from the asst manager, Victoria. She was really paying attention to the fit of each of the half-dozen lightweight shoes and clogs she suggested based on my feedback and her careful measurements, and the cool scanning tool she had me stand on at the outset (featured in their ads), and made impressively astute observations based on what she could see as I tried them on and walked around in them while she watched, triggering additional suggestions for shoes to try on. Victoria is the best! I went into Becks because I was looking for personalized support in choosing the right fit for my dream shoes, the Boston clogs. Birkenstock fitting is very different from any other shoe, and if this is your first pair, you definitely want some professional help. Prior to Becks, I went to some bigger stores, but I didn't get much assistance and was still unsure about the size I needed. I chose Becks because it gave me the impression of being a locally owned shop that really knows its business and can help with the fit. That impression turned out to be absolutely true. I was greeted by Victoria, who analyzed my feet thoroughly, noted the areas where I needed more support, and, since I was set on the shoes I wanted, helped me find the right size. When I came into the store, I was deciding between EU sizes 42 and 43, but the scanner showed that I was actually between 43 and 44. Victoria pointed out that the 44 fit me better based on the way I walk, and that's something I would never have figured out myself. If not for her, I would have ended up with the wrong size and years of potential discomfort. When I tried on the size Victoria suggested, I was surprised by how big the number seemed, but I immediately felt the difference in the fit. As another customer noted, Victoria really knows what she's doing. I was very pleased with the experience and will definitely come back for the next pair of shoes I have in mind for fall. In fact, we even got a pair for my partner, who was hesitant to try anything other than his Nike Dunks. Thanks to Victoria's recommendations, we were able to find a great fit for him too. Brian is incredible. I was there on a busy Friday, and it was truly both impressive and entertaining to watch him work. I learned so much about breaking in doc martens, the importance of insoles and quality socks, and shoe-fit in general. A few groups were there for basically the same reason, and at one point it felt like a super interactive "class" on shoes! He was on fire, and sold a lot of products. I was the last one left in the store and did not mind at all because it was so interesting and entertaining. Give this man a raise, he is the reason I would come back to Beck's for my future shoe needs! Put another way, I've never experienced such attention and nuance when finding the right fit. I was referred to Beck's Shoes by my podiatrist. We walked in and Brian took great care of us. After scanning and measuring my feet, he was able to provide the arch supports I needed, not only for my sneakers, but also for my dress boots. There was zero sales pressure as he was just looking to help make walking easier. While there he just casually asked my husband if he needed foot supports too. We decided to get his foot scanned as well, and found out he also had high arches and would probably benefit from support, which in the end was true. Although we visited the Berkeley store only because the San Francisco one's foot scanner was out of commission for a while, we would easily go back to Brian if in the area. I have very very wide feet and a host of other foot related problems. Beck shoes advertise that they have 4E wide shoes...THEY DON'T! They sold me D wide shoes when I need 4 E width. This is a review for Brian, not so much the store itself. If I wanted to buy shoes without any assistance I'd shop online. I went into Beck's shoes because I needed someone to direct me for the perfect fit and wanted customer service. This is exactly what I recieved. Brian is knowledgeable and has the perfect laid back approach to sells that I so deeply appreciate in today's age of "just buy it, if it doesn't work return it". Thanks for sharing your expertise and your patience! For the Beck's store itself, it seems that their supply of shoes are low and sell out super fast. I'd pay more to shop locally and as far away from big chains as possible, I just wish Beck's inventory was stocked better. I will definately be back to shop with Brian, but will probably call ahead to make sure they have what I am needing. read more

Came in with my friend to buy hiking shoes and we were assisted right away by Brian, the store manager. He was very skilled in making sure we got the right measurements and a variety of options tailored for each of us to choose from. After buying the shoes and noticing a bit of discomfort, I came in again and was given some shoe paddings free of charge. I've been in three times this year. Each time the store is slammed and there is only one person working. Brian was amazing each time. He's super friendly but I can see how taxing it is to juggle all the customers. Honestly if there were more staff then I would give the store 5 stars. I went to Beck's looking for work boots. I have been in the construction industry for over 40 years and have always struggled with finding the right boots. I have unique issues. Brian was absolutely amazing. He listened to my personal issues, guided me through the process of finding the right choice for me. While I was in the store he took care of 4 other customers, all with the same attentiveness and patience. With no pressure. He even suggested a unique idea I had never considered. And I've been trying everything since I was a kid. I'm 61. I will no longer buy my boots on Amazon or any other shoe store. Brian deserves the highest rating possible. This is my first Yelp review. This review is for Brian. The guy is probably the best sales associate i have dealt with in some time. Customer service in America isn't dead when you visit Becks in Berkeley. It was a Saturday he was there alone and there were about five people in the store. He was extremely efficient in dealing with everyone and making each customer feel tended to. On top of that you never felt the stress he was under. Consistently smiling and staying calm. That being said the guy needs a hand but you wouldn't know it. Give this man a raise!
