In town for the weekend and I am really glad I stopped in for breakfast at this eclectic spot. Located inside a library, yes a library! It had a really robust menu with lots of reasonably priced add on options. They specialize in spatzle so I of course had to try the Vienna Scramble with sourdough toast and homemade jam. It was a big portion and super tasty. The staff were friendly and the food came out so fast! I peeked at all the other orders coming out and the eggs Bennies looked pretty tasty if that's your thing. Definitely recommend stopping in. It's well priced, big portions, lots of options and a cute atmosphere. read more

Aside from the hair in my eggs, there was also a puddle of grease covering my breakfast plate. Clearly they didn't drain the bacon. I had to get up and grab an extra plate to move my food over to a clean plate. But my eggs and toast were soaking in grease and everything tasted like grease. And not the good kind of bacon grease either. This tasted like deep fryer grease. Did they deep fry my bacon? It was gross. They acknowledged the issue and apologized, but then charged me for everything. Not even a discount. Fair enough I guess. But by taking my $7 from me they lost a long time customer. I've been going here for over 30 years, but I guess these new owners don't care enough to keep people happy. So now here I am, telling all my family and friends; "don't bother going to The Vienna Cafe, I had a terrible experience and they didn't seem to care". Too bad. It was a small issue, easily solved; offer me a new breakfast or take it off my bill. Hope my $7 was worth it, Vienna Cafe. read more

This café is situated in Packrat Annie's used book store. Excellent service and great prices. Lots of items to choose from no matter what your diet. I had the eggs and had a choice of 3 kinds of bread. Server brought me peanut butter and grape jelly for my toast! Hot tea was replenished without asking. Oh dear. This is a weird restaurant. I loved the used bookstore setting and the rustic decor, but the service staff were too personal, the clientele too loud and the food too full of cholesterol. We got here just after they opened at 10am on Sunday morning, and got one of the last tables. The ambient music seemed to be a 18-minute space-rock jam session, courtesy of the turntable at the attached book/record shop. Our server told an agitated woman next to us, who was upset we were attended to before her: "OK, let's not panic" (she promptly left, muttering under her breath). I can't fault a cafe that serves great food with great service at a reasonable price. I had the 3 egg omelette with several fillings and noticed that other patrons ordered the same meal. The sole server served a steady supply of customers in a most cordial and efficient manner. This is definitely a great place to go for breakfast. read more

We often come to The Vienna for breakfast on the weekend. Omelette special on Saturday and Benny special on Sunday are decently priced. We love the selection of Benny's on Sunday, and that's what's had us coming back. Recently the food has not been as good, poached eggs are always very hard for the Benny's, hollandaise is under seasoned and thin. The menu used to be really good, with more selection. I'd love to see it become better with the smaller menu. read more

I so want to like the Vienna Cafe; it has a great location, casual ambience and it's a nice place for a group to meet. But the food is hit and miss, i have had bones in my chicken salad sandwich TWICE with no concern or offer to make it right in any way. by owner. In fact he seemed disgruntled that Ii was complaining. On another occasion I had a very strange 3 egg omelette configuration, with the very dry, overcooked egg mixture being folded over with the scant undercooked fillings scattered on the top with a slight drizzle of cheese. i had to really look for the cheese. It felt like they were in a hurry. The staff is also hit and miss, there are some sweet girls but they all seem a bit harried and uncertain. I have enjoyed the smoked salmon on cream cheese bagel but they are still pretty stingy with their offerings. If i have to go i stick to tea which they haven't messed up yet. Please try harder to be the cafe you could be if only you cared a bit more. read more

Is it a bad thing when you are in a cafe but it feels as though you are in a hippie's rumpus room from 1978? I don't know if it's a "bad" thing, but I do not actively seek the "hippie rumpus room" ambience when craving a bold cappuccino or a quiet space in which to read and concentrate. I don't really mind The Vienna, but only because I view this space as a bookstore with a cafe, rather than a coffeeshop located incestuously close to an autonomous book shop. With plastic tablecloths, dirty blue carpeting, and an incohesive layout, the decor of this cafe does not reflect the goods that they serve. Their coffee and baked goods are above average, but this is not a place that you would choose to spend a great deal of time in. You may sit down for a drink after buying a new book at the neighbour's shop (Packrat Annie's), but you would not select this business over Oso Negro or the Dominion Cafe, which is just across the road. read more

Located in a library/book store, a nice little place to eat in Nelson, and its kid friendly! My hunny made me discover this really great location on a recent trip to Nelson. The food is delicious and the service is great. The ambiance is relaxed and friendly. There is a stand of treats where one can purchase goodies as they leave the establishment, and it is also the place to pay for your meal which makes it a very convenient stop. There are many options for food, from spatzle to Eggs Benedict. The price is very reasonable as well considering this restaurant only cooks from local organic products. one of the better features for families is a dedicated corner for children to play so as to leave their parents with a few precious minutes of kid-free food-enjoyment pleasure. This establishment also use a lot of recycled products for the napkins and packaging products so as to reduce their carbon footprint. I will most certainly return to this location as the freshness of the ingredients could literally be tasted in the cuisine. read more

Looking for breakfast and found this place by accident. It is literally built into a used book store. Ordered the all day breakfast ($6) with rye toast ($1.50). Food came fairly quickly. The breakfast was your no nonsense diner fare. 2 eggs, 3 strips of bacon, 4 slices of toast. Normal sized everything. Overall it got the job done. Asked for peanut butter, jam, ketchup and sriracha. The jam was chunky and wasn't what I would typical expect. I give this place 4 stars for the hippie vibe, convenience and cheap breakfast. One of my favourite places to dine and hang out. SPATZEL is amazinnnnng! Every type they make it great! The broccoli is to die for! Plus their breakfasts are always fresh and great! Staff is always casual in the most comfortable my way, smiling and inviting. Plus hot coffee and epic views. Used books and vinyl is always a good side dish to an amazing meal. Dining here was a strange experience. They were busy, as expected, for a Sunday morning. We waited by the "wait to be seated" sign for 5-ish minutes before a man walked over and directed us toward a table to sit at. The table was still dirty, but as soon as we started to sit down, a woman came over and scolded us for not waiting to be seated and told us to go back and wait by the door. So we waited another 5 minutes to be seated properly. Then once we sat, we waited 10 minutes to be greeted by our waitress, who had a very weird energy about her. We ordered our food, I ordered a scramble which was supposed to have ham, mushroom, and bell peppers. They forgot the bell peppers, and when I asked for them, they brought them out raw and cold. I mixed them in my scramble anyway, which made the whole thing a pretty unpleasant temperature, as it was not very warm to begin with. Mu husband ordered an extra order of potatoes, which never came. My friend ordered the goulash, which had so much paprika in it, it got stuck to the back of your throat. When it came time to pay, the servers couldn't figure out what we ordered, overcharged us, then undercharged, then made up a total for us to pay and could not provide us with any itemized receipt showing us why we were being charged what they were asking for. Overall, I would not come back. It was a lot of waiting and a lot of hassle for average, if not disappointing, food. read more

By far the best little breakfast in town! Yah the room is a little dated, but the coffee, fresh local greens, and yummy bennies, and decent portions more than make up for it. well, this used to be a go to, now it's a depends on which waitress is there ..... the usual gals are no longer there and a new team has been there since the summer...they haven't improved ..... in their service game or in their general attitude. There is nothing so unappealing as watching waitresses roll their eyes..... it's frustrating to watch tables get served twice by two different girls, watching the wait staff bring wrong bills out to tables... I'm hoping that with the winter coming, the usual staff will return to the mountains and help bring this place up to speed, or at least give the new wait staff some pointers on how to up their game read more

Big plates, whole/home cooking, and good service. My new go-to breakfast place in Nelson. Really enjoy the omelettes, made with your choices of fresh stuff (I like doing spinach, mushroom, white cheddar), served with pile of grill potatoes and toast. Drip coffee is fine, not gourmet but what you'd expect from a quality diner. Slightly better than average price, and a book store sharing the space - just perfect for me. read more
