If you like coffee that will make your hair stand on end, this may be the place to get your fix. If you like coffee with a more subtle flavor profile that doesn't include burnt as a tasting note, then perhaps you should search elsewhere. I fall into the latter camp and did not enjoy the coffee here. The breakfast sandwich was messy, hearty, and good. They were out of croissants by mid-to-late morning, so I had it on a cheddar scone. Lovely outdoor area with numerous cozy nooks to perch among the plants and birds, and also quite a bit of seating inside. Obviously a very popular spot amongst the locals. read more

I have cupped their coffee beans on numerous occasions and not once did I get excited. All were over roasted almost black like charcoal. On their website they list some single origin with some exciting profiles and then it appears they go and decline the cupper of the experience by blending it and then roasting to oblivion. Take some of the great single origins you have, like the Ugandan or the Ethiopian from Oromia and light roast it and sell as single origin instead of blending the uniqueness out of it. Nelson is situated in a region of B.C. many consider to be a paradise. However, it is not because of the coffee. read more

Cute hipster cafe w a relaxed ambiance and plenty of seating. They have benches in a zen garden outside but it was drizzling so we sat inside. There seemed to always be a line for ordering but it moved quickly. The cashier was friendly and kindly answered my question about the menu (fyi, a canadiano is a cup of coffee w two espresso shots!). We got a 12 oz breve (CAN$3.75), 12 oz dandelion latte ($2.50), a breakfast sandwich on a kaiser bun ($6.25), and a breakfast sandwich on a bagel ($7.25). The sammies had a thick steamed egg and a slice of tomato which were good but the breads were nothing special, kind of tasteless. The breve was typical but the dandelion latte just tasted like milk w a hint of earthiness. The cafe is definitely worth visiting if you plan on lounging around and chatting with a friend, but not necessarily the best in town for just grabbing a quick bite. read more

We love this coffee! Their latte is AHhhhMazing! They roast their own beans and it is amazing. They have organic roasted coffee. Their beans are sold locally in Nelson, BC and in select stores. Their coffee shop is cozy, open, airy, and has seating indoors and outdoors. We tried the salmon bagel, turkey chili, and turkey panini-all very great choices. read more

Absolutely lovely garden area. Pretty good pastries. If you are looking for third wave coffee, look elsewhere. Beans are severely over roasted, almost to Starbucks level. Preparation of cappuccino and cortado were poor with over aerated foam and poor aesthetics. Taste was just tolerable. read more

All sorts of beverages besides coffee - I enjoyed the spicy chai latte with almond milk (although it wasn't too spicy. A little more spice would have been good). Food was great, the coffee was good as well - it is on the stronger/darker roast side of the coffee taste Spectrum . Had a great tasting smoked Salmon bagel with cream cheese, Capers and onions. Everything was off to the side so it let Me make it as I saw fit. The latte was excellent, and the triple berry muffin was absolutely Loaded with berries - chock full of them. Came back and had an iced Latte and I love that the ice cubes are frozen drip coffee cubes. No diluted flavour when it melts! Nice decor and a beautiful patio and garden. I think the building itself is a converted house, so it genuinely has a homey feel to it. It's in the vibrant downtown area of Nelson, which is already a picturesque town. read more

This is one af the sweetest coffee shops Ive been to in a while. What a delight. I had an iced chai oat latte. Pretty good! The best aspect of this cafe is the fantastic gardens and landscaping outside. The beautiful designed crescent moon benches allow for your own private space to sit and read and enjoy.. while still being in the company of others who are also enjoying their garden space. Fantastic design. I would love to see something like this in Vancouver. I spent an hour lounging with my book.. I look forward to my next visit to Nelson in the fall. This would be my go-to cafe except at times there are a very long lines. read more

This place was busy every single day that we were in Nelson! Like the line was out the door, constantly, no matter weekdays or on the weekend. Luckily, the staff are super competent and efficiently manage the line so that the wait is not as long as it would seem. The coffee here is fantastic, regardless of what you are looking to get, I really enjoyed the Americano. They sell bulk coffee in half pound or full pound packages, try the Messy Room! The ambiance is generally humming and a little bit louder than most coffee shops, the seating is comfortable but limited based on the volume of people but the design of the lounge is beautiful and they have outdoor seating as well. Pro Tip: The breakfast sandwiches that they serve are incredible! read more

Ugh, how the mighty have fallen! I have to admit, I have been an Oso Negro fanboy since my first visit ... 13 years ago. I love their coffee and have bought their beans from a local store in Calgary for years. I've raved about the beans, and the cafe. Alas, I can no longer rave about the cafe. It has lost its vibe. Sure, the coffee is pretty decent. Sure, the food is pretty decent. Sure, the staff are pretty friendly. But .... the lineups, nowhere to sit, the average pour for my Americano, and just overall the space is tired and in need of a reno. My allegiance is still there for their beans but I'll go to the place down the hill from now on as they WANTED and APPRECIATED my business. read more

Nelson = Oso Negro Coffee for me and the big guy. We spent two weeks in Nelson a while back and enjoyed this coffee immensely. We met the owner and chatted about life in Nelson, the culture, and coffee roasting. We visited the Roaster, in a separate location up on the hill. The quality of this coffee ranks the highest in BC. up there with Kicking Horse in our books. There are only a few in those high ranks with a slot or two for the yet undiscovered. The cafe is a wonderful spot, it's everything you'd never expect to find in this small town. Oso Negro coffee can be found at the following locations here in Vancouver: Strong's Market, Mainly Organics, Drive Organics, and perhaps a few other select Organic food stores. Try it when you have the chance. If you are traveling, be sure and stop in to the cafe and buy a bag of the freshest stuff and enjoy Nelson. One of the best little towns in Canada. read more

This groovy cafe is worth the short detour off Nelson's main drag. Truly fantastic coffee, delicious baked goods, and enough interesting menu items (and whole bean coffee) to make it an option any time of day. We had actually picked up a bag of the beans at the local supermarket for a lodge trip not realizing it was Nelson's local roaster. The beans were excellent, enough so that we sought this place out on our way back from Powder Creek. Admittedly we didn't stick around long enough to comment on the local flora and fauna, but it appears to be a prime people watching location, if that's what you're into. read more

Talk about having a following. Oso has that and then some. Everywhere you go in Nelson, you are sure to find their beans. And they have a very nice cafe. Friendly staff. A cool vibe to the place. Prices are reasonable, food as well as coffee. The only 'but' is that they kick you off of their Wi-Fi after 30 mins. I was in town on business and wanted somewhere to chill for a couple hours and 'Get out. Squatters.' Figuratively, not literally. There is a separate cabinet of gluten-free goodies - which I really appreciated. The coffee is really good, and the baked goods are amazing. This spot was recommended by locals I met on the hill after a great day of snowboarding. Decor is comfy, service was friendly and helpful, drip coffee was delicious. My buddy tried a dandelion coffee alternative, and he said it was good. I also sampled the chocolate zucchini bread and the pumpkin chocolate chip bread. Both really flavorful and not too sweet. After trying this spot in town, I was up in the mountains doing a heliboarding adventure for a few days, and they used oso negro beans to make the coffee each morning.
