We popped into Main Street Diner on a recommendation, and wow -- it was by far one of the best diners we've ever eaten at. They have an incredible Greek-inspired menu, and everything we tried was outstanding. I ordered the Santorini Shawarma Stack featuring a shawarma-spiced lamb burger with sweet pickled onions, the diner's tabouli, Greek yogurt tzatziki, house-made hummus, dill pickles, crisp leaf lettuce, and a sweet & savoury Middle Eastern chutney on a locally baked bun -- paired with the Greek salad. Absolutely phenomenal. My mom had the fish sandwich with a side of buffalo fries, and we also shared the buffalo chicken fries -- everything was really, really good. Huge shoutout to Lawrence, our waiter, and Eryn, our server -- both were incredibly kind, attentive, and welcoming. Eryn never stopped checking on us, kept our waters filled, and had the best smile. Lawrence even made us a hot chocolate with whipped cream, which was hands down the best hot chocolate in town. The service is excellent, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and this is one of the best places to stop in while visiting Nelson. Noon to 12:30 is a perfect time to go -- it does get busy during the lunch rush, but it is 100% worth the wait. There are lots of great menu options, and we will definitely be back. A cute, cozy restaurant with a super friendly owner, who also happens to be the talented chef! A surprise Greek twist to the menu really hit the spot for our group. Watch what you order. We used to go here often and were very happy. A one piece fish and chips came with coleslaw and a good portion on fries. Now you get a bit of fries and fish on a small plate for about the same price the full one piece meal was before. They lost a long time customer. read more

Went for dinner in Nelson after a very long drive from Calgary. We were in a daze from driving all day and after checking into the hotel, wandered out onto the Main Street. Warning for those travelling thru Nelson: most things in the downtown area are closed early on Sunday evenings. We stumbled upon the Main Street Diner and initially I was overwhelmed and skeptical over the menu bc it is massive! A lot of Greek food and then a ton of fish and chips items, a bunch of lamb items (yes Green style) and a bunch of burgers - a pretty mixed bag. Both of us decided to go with Greek dishes in the end and could not have been happier. I had the Delphinian pita wrap - soft Greek pita with veg, feta, and chicken. Their tzaziki is absolutely to die for.. I actually dreamt of this wrap last night. I upgraded to house salad which had the best pickled cabbage/raisin mixture on it - so good! Kelly had the Athenian burger which was mile high with tzaziki and Greek veg - also enjoyed! I wish I had more time in Nelson bc I would go back! One more thing; sit on the patio if you can bc the resto is kind of bland.... the service is AWESOME - servers really friendly! read more

This is our new favorite restauant in Nelson. The leg of lamb is moist and flavorful. No mint sauce or mango chutney needed. We could come eat lamb every evening. We were here for lunch today as well. The food is excellent. I had the chicken rice aoup and my husband had the spanakopita with tzatziki which is a yummy Greek yogurt sauce. Great find! Waiter was really nice and the ambiance was good. We walked in and it seemed pretty empty for 8pm in a Friday. I had the lamb burger which was AWESOME, a little messy but he brought extra napkins so all was good. A little spendy but worth it ! Kids has a Greek salad (all fresh ingredients even in January) and one had the fish and chips. The fish was large fillets and the breading was light and flavorful. CAUTION TO VEGETARIANS!!! I'd been eating at the Main Street Diner for years - I don't eat meat (nor does my family) so my favourite was the veggie burger and fries. Imagine my shock and dismay when someone told me that all of their deep-fried food (fries included) is cooked in beef lard. Yes, beef lard in 2018. I contacted the restaurant to question this and they did confirm that this is indeed the case. I was very upset and said that they should make this clear on the menu - I'll bet I'm not the only one who ate their fries unaware they were also eating meat (and what about those with religious food restrictions??). Management seemed totally unapologetic and unconcerned about this, saying they had 'never hid this fact' and assumed that anyone with dietary restrictions would ask the waiter if the food was cooked this way. I would say NOT stating this on the menu is in fact, less than forthright and in this day and age no one would assume that a restaurant would still be cooking this way, particularly with the negative health implications of lard. Main Street Diner, be honest, and put this on your menus - inform your customers!!!! read more

The Main Street Diner is a very nice comfortable place good for bringing the family. I order the boring burger i added ketchup and bacon. The bacon was not to flavourful and was quite crispy and hurt my teeth the patty was quite dry but the actual taste (ignoring the texture) was amazing and left my tongue happy! I had fond memories of visiting here a couple of years ago so I was really looking forward to eating here again. Unfortunately it didn't live up the hype I had created. Working in Nelson for the week and decided to stop by here for dinner. Ordered the roasted lamb leg dinner as well as a side of fish (deep fried minus the fries). The meal came with a choice of soup or salad and I opted for the soup which happened to be cream of mushroom. Soup turned out to be medium sized and came nice and hot. The soup was rich, creamy and had a good amount of mushrooms and onions. Overall it was soul-warmingly delicious. Next came the side of fish which I ordered as an after thought. The waiter had mentioned that the fish and chips was by far the most popular item in the house and I was curious to see what all the fuss was about. The piece that I got resembled a corn dog and to my surprise reminded my of a deep fried banana that one can get from a Thai restaurant for dessert. The texture of the fish was firm and I was not disapointed. Last came the roasted lamb leg. This included several slices of lamb (I was expecting the whole leg) served with Greek rice, roasted potatoes and grilled veggies. On first glance I was afraid that the lamb would be tough but it turned out to be tender. The waiter brought over both mango chutney as well as mint sauce to go with the lamb (mango chutney takes the cake). Service was great and my water was constantly refilled. Overall, the meal was a great experience. The menu at this place is extensive and includes both diner classics as well as many Greek dishes. I've been to a handful of restaurants in town during my 5 day stint here and I have to say this meal was one of the best. I would definitely come back and recommended this place to others. We got married in Vancouver and our photographer suggested we drive through Nelson on our way through and visit Main Street Diner. She said they had the best baked potato poutine in the world. We made sure to stop on our way through and she was right, the best baked potato poutine in the world! It wasn't a traditional poutine with gravy and cheese curds, but was some sort of amazing deliciousness that was gone in three seconds flat! My partner and I were on a road trip to Nelson and Ainsworth last week and went to the Main St Diner for a burger. Someone recommended the Main St Diner as the best burger in town. My partner and I shared cheeseburger deluxe and the lamb burger. Both were great! We liked that the beef burger was served medium. The patty was tender and flavourful. The name of this restaurant doesn't give it justice because they serve the most delicious Greek food. I ordered a cotopita with a caeser salad and my hubby ordered the lamb kefta burger with fries. My cotopita (chicken, mushrooms in a phyllo pastry) melted in my mouth. Hubby enjoyed his burger too. Portions are large and filling. Would love to come back to try their lamb dinner. After reading some of the previous reviews and seeing all of the 4 and 5 star ratings, I decided to give this place a try. The first thing I'd like to get out of the way is that if I could rate the service and hospitality of this place separately, I would give the server 10 stars out of 5. She did an excellent job! Now on to the ambiance. It's a diner so the atmosphere is your typical diner. The restaurant is well lit, clean, and the atmosphere casual and great for all ages. I found the wood on the table and chairs a bit sticky to the touch. This may be primarily due to the varnish in the humid temperatures as opposed to cleanliness. You have the option of sitting inside our out on their patio side walk. The menu variety was good and as reviews had stated, there were a lot of Greek style dishes on the Dinner special menu. One of the meals we ordered included their house soup. At first sip, it seemed okay, but began to grow on me. The soup was a cream of mushroom. It was full of fresh sliced mushrooms which really made this dish. The serving size was extremely generous. We also ordered the Grilled Chicken Caesar. The presentation was good (actually in all of their dishes as well as portion sizes). The flavour of the Caesar salad was good but they probably could have used less dressing. The chicken along the side was grilled well but because the edges were thinner, they were a bit dry. The leg of lamb dish we ordered had great presentation. In comparison to Greek food back at home, we found the lamb portion sizes to be much smaller. The variety of flavorful sides that come with the dish, round out the "fill factor" so you will definitely leave full. Was very surprised that the deep fried seasoned potato wedges were raw as it crunched when bitten into. Unfortunately all pieces were undercooked on the serving we had. We saw another table order fish and chips which looked pretty good. I had seen reviews on these and perhaps will order the next time around. We were later told that the restaurant was called a Fish and Chip place in the past. I gather they may have retained the dish they had specialised in the past (not sure). All in all my first dinner (or diner) experience since returning back to Nelson was good. The food overall was good and the service was excellent. The price/value ratio seemed a bit high for the type of food on the plate (when I compare this to home base) but am assuming this to be relative to the other restaurants in the city (will find out as I discover more places here to compare. I would consider going back to try out other dishes on the menu , perhaps the fish next time. Compared to our Steveston Village (Richmond BC) favorites, it is in tough competition in the Fish and Chip as well as Greek food category. I would say if you are in for a place offering variety on the menu, you may want to check the Main Street Diner. read more

I have eaten here many times, and I have always had a good meal. Along with the Hume, this is always one of our go-to places when we're not in the mood for a Kootenay adventure and just want to eat at a place that we know is consistently good (albeit not very exciting). Although I tend to gravitate toward burgers and melts, the greek specialties and salads are also very good. Service is about average (I.e., good by Nelson standards), and the bare walls are a bit stark (Spartan?), but the Main Street Diner will never disappoint. read more

Ate here while on a mini-holiday with my husband, who went to high-school in Nelson. I ordered a cup of the Manhattan clam chowder. While delicious, the portion size was ridiculously small, and not worth $6. I had the small order of fish-and-chips as my entree, which was quite good. I keep reading about the fish and chips but the menu says cod and I prefer halibut. When the server was at a later table she said that halibut was also available (+). I was drawn to the burgers. They serve beef, chicken, veggie and lamb burgers. One seemed especially cool, with a side of calamari (as well as fries), but the burger only had cheese! I was more interested in their pepper and cream cheese or blue cheese so I asked about sub's. They do it all the time (++) - but most sub the Greek burger. Not a problem at all! They also have soon great local beer on tap. Now to the food. The calamari was crisp, lightly battered and cooked perfectly. The burger was delicious and the fries were good too. I love the diner! They have been pumping out great food for as long as I can remember. It's one of the places in town that you know you are going to get a great meal if you go. Service is always fast and friendly. Don't go if you are on a diet and it isn't "fine" dining, but it's the place to be for a quick casual meal that isn't going to empty the pockets. On a recent visit to Nelson, my woman and another family local to Nelson decided to eat at this location. we were most certainly not impressed. The service was below mediocre. The waitress came at the beginning to get our order and did not show up again, not even to fill up the drinks. Someone else actually brought us our food and filled our drinks was the waitress was chatting up front. Its not even like the place was busy, but she seemed very enthralled with talking to a gentleman about her age at the front of the restaurant. I understand friends or relationships can be pleasant at the workplace but when it prevents the job to be done... then it becomes a bit of a problem in my opinion. The food itself was all-right, nothing too fancy for the price. I had the Spanakopita with tzatziki sauce, which after being told by the waitress that It would be filling and satisfying, I ended up with 2 tiny little triangles and a bowl of sauce which ended up being 10-12 bucks. My woman ordered fries which were quite bland and not all that crispy. The decor was quite good but the service ruined the ambiance for me. I've been here twice and both times, I ordered fish&chips. On my first visit, I had cod. The chips were good but the fish was too greasy and thick batter was gluey.
