If you like sweet teas and good old fashion hamburgers and fries then this place this is NOT the place for you . It's a hippie vibe and everything is made healthy and un sweetened.., We ate outside which was beautiful. I had the cheeseburger which was dry and the bun was falling apart. We showed up on opening day spring 2018. We enjoyed a very good lunch that included a sandwich and wrap. Both were extremely tasty. It was easy to tell they use quality ingredients and know how to put it all together. The interior has a modern feel with comfortable seating inside and patio seating outside. Wonderful atmosphere, amazing menu, beautifully delicious food and drinks. We sat outside on the lovely patio and enjoyed unique cocktails and sandwiches. I ordered a veggie panini with a sesame hemp seed pate and sweetie had a tempura salmon wrap. Incredible. Cocktails were made with homemade raspberry mint tea and tequila - and bigger blocked cubes. Makes such a difference. We weren't overly hungry so didn't order the burger and fries, but we saw them go by to other tables and they looked fabulous... exclamations from diners confirm. Had probly the best hamburger(Cowboy Burger) I've ever had in a restaurant. This is our first visit to Black Salt - lunch was so good I wanted to hang around and eat dinner there. Easily counted half a dozen items I wanted to try. This is high quality chef designed dining. Serving staff is friendly, professional, and attentive. Gorgeous patio setting loaded with plants, very serene. I will go out of my way to go back here. read more

Curly fries were delicious. Bratwurst sausage was sourced from Nelson. Caesar was not traditional so that was a miss for us. We had 3 of the 4 teas and she gave us a sample of the 4th. All good, but depends on your preferences. I liked the hibiscus one; one daughter liked the black tea; the younger one liked the lavender lemonade. Casual dining with a fine dining flare. The food presentation was skillful and pleasing. The meals were both tasty and inexpensive. A rare combination. The burgers were happily served bun free on a nice bed of bib lettuce, garnished with a fried onion spread, a house-made relish and ketchup. Nummy! I recommend the striploin burger. I would definitely be a regular if I lived in Crawford Bay. read more

My poor experience really had more to do with the service I received and not the food I was served. Here are some suggestions for management: 1* When a customer enters your establishment, greet them. Don't ignore them. My wife and I waited 10 mins at the door while at least 3 separate employees walked by us multiple times and ignored us. We finally stopped one and asked whether we should seat ourselves or not. That brings me to my next suggestion. 2* Inform your customers how you conduct business. Should they seat themselves or wait to be seated? Do the waiters/waitresses take orders from the tables or should customers order from the counter? After we sat ourselves, we waited another 10 mins for someone - anyone - to approach us. When that didn't happen, we got up and flagged down another employee. Turns out we should've ordered from the counter instead of waiting at the table. At least 2 other parties made our mistake, but both left the restaurant after being ignored instead of taking more time to inquire further. We almost joined them. 3* Wipe down your tables and provide utensils - without having to be asked by a customer to do so! While we were there, every table needed a wipe-down... and that was before any of the customers sat down at them. Of course, as you'd expect, we had to ask another employee for both. Regarding the food, it was pretty standard for that part of the world. It was fresh and light (lots of vegetables and simple dressings), but with weird combinations of ingredients (my wrap was stuffed with vegetables, cheese, a light dressing, and... a scrambled egg for the protein?) It was fine, but I don't think I'd order it again. read more

Since the yelp rating was low. I was not keen to go to this place. When I first asked a local, he suggested this place. But I didn't believe him. So I asked another local. When she also highly recommended it, I felt I should ignore yelp & go by the locals. I should say I was not just pleasantly surprised but blown away. This is definitely one of the best restaurants I have gone to. The food was not just creative but also phenomenal. Every ingredient was so fresh, you could literally taste the difference (except may be the crab dish). There was something classy (felt I am in San Francisco) about this place. Something you wouldn't expect in the middle of no-where. We were a group of 9 people with 3 tired kids. Our waitress was so nice & genuine, she took efforts to make our kids feel comfortable. Food is a five. We all had excellent meals - six of us - from grilled cheese with herb chicken, Pom frites, falafels to burgers to gazpacho and kale soups, and a beet salad. The service was extremely slow. It too over an hour and a half to get our meals. They were kind to bring an umbrella after about 45 minutes but for a table of six, the sun won out. Allow plenty of time as the food is well worth the wait. read more

But wait... there is something better than the food; this place has the best coffee in the Kootenays. Sure other places have good coffee shops but they just aren't in the same league. On July 22, we were at the door of the Black Salt Cafe. A sign indicated that the restaurant opened on that day at 10 a.m. . We waited till after 10 a.m. . The restaurant was still closed. I knocked repeatedly at the door. No response. Then, I peeked through the window to discover someone was walking up and down in the kitchen at the back. I knocked even harder. No one spoke. No one showed up. A contemptuous treatment of customers I would say. read more

Place has a lot of potential. Great atmosphere, food was very good but on the pricey side. Don't mind that for the fact that the service is horrible. If you care to wait 2 hrs for a couple of tapas and no one refilling drinks then this is the place for you. It's too bad because the food is good but just can't overlook the nonchalant attitude of the owner. Boccolino down the road or golf course had much better service and great food. Don't mind waiting and sipping a drink and relaxing on holidays but when you wait two hrs and they have given your food to another table there is no excuse. Too bad I wanted to give a great review. The day was very hot and we had quite a bit of driving ahead of us but after getting off the Kootenay Lake Free Ferry we both wanted something small. I asked for something that was cold and cold. The waitress said they had ice! Then she said they also had cold teas and other drinks, and cold soup; gazpacho. We sat on their patio which a very green-thumbed somebody furnished had with many beautiful flowering pots. The gazpacho was excellent and we found our hibiscus tea, sweet with a hint of cinnamon, to be refreshing. The staff was very friendly and the cafe pleasant. The town of Crawford Bay, although very small, seemed very art-y and would be fun to explore. read more

Best food on the entire East Shore of Kootenay Lake. Food is comparable to the great cafes in Nelson, or Vancouver, for that matter. Service can be a slow as they seem to be frequently short staffed. Worth the wait if you're not in a hurry - and you shouldn't be while soaking in the scenery and local artisans. read more

This "café" serves incredibly delicious food, of many types. We had a group of ten, went for dinner, and had kind of tapas' dishes that we all got a taste of. It was very good. Absolutely not what we expected to find in a little remote, po-dunk town, (sorry CB). Great food! Give a try. read more
