All the ancestors are rolling around like who do it because the hot dogs served looked boiled, the triple bacon burger ordered was served with raw half cooked bacon & the burger meat the smelled spoiled. Took it back but with the no refund policy left me accepting another burger which was worse than the raw cooked bacon & spoiled meat. I feel funny about even writing this review, I mean, it's The Varsity. It's not going anywhere, and if you know then you know. It's more of a once-a-year guilty pleasure rather than a every other night type restaurant. You just appreciate it for what it is and move along. The main location downtown is where you get the full Varsity experience, especially if you go inside. There are pics along the wall of all the famous people (i.e. President's, singers, actors) that have stopped in. It's really a city landmark, and at least go to THAT one once in your lifetime. This location is an odd one-off situated back off the main road, but it has a legit drive-thru (as opposed to the drive up and park and yell into a carstall speaker at the main location). Deciding I would fully indulge on my cheat day, I came through and thought they were permanently closed down. There are random cones throughout the parking lot, no one is inside (COVID) and the lights were off. I was just deciding to go elsewhere when I saw a car pull in to the drive-thru. Apparently they are just working out of the small area near the drive-thru and the parking lot is just really poorly lit. I ordered a few chili dogs, onion rings and a Frosted Orange. I asked the order taker if I could get ketchup on the chili dogs, she goes "you want it on ALL of them?!?" like I had just asked her to put maple syrup on not one hotdog but 3 of them. I said "yea is that okay?!?" Get to the window, the box is nice and tidy (the original location hands you a grease stained box with half the food disassembled), missing the onion rings. When I pointed this out, she gruffly handed me some. So again, this being The Varsity, my expectations were already not great. And they met those expectations. read more

I have been passing through Atlanta and wanting to try one of The Varsity locations for years. I finally got my chance this week, and while I wasn't blown away, there are some good things happening here. You step out of your car and into the past when you visit The Varsity. It's a nostalgic flashback to a time when most things, including food, were much more simple. However, one look at the prices and you are immediately catapulted back into 2019 where two plain dogs will run you around $10 and a can of The Varsity's chili will cost you almost $5 to take home to try on your own dogs. I went with the slaw dog, a cheese burger, and a chocolate shake. The chocolate shake was easily the highlight of the meal, with the the hot dog and burger both being decent. The bun on the burger seemed to be toasted, and was especially good. Other than that, the food was overall very average. Small tip: the menu is very literal, so spend some time looking it over before ordering. I.e., a slaw dog only has slaw, a cheeseburger only has cheese, etc. I don't usually comment on bathroom sanitation but thought it was worth mentioning the bathroom was pretty nasty. But hey, you don't really step into the Wayback Machine for immaculate bathrooms and gourmet food, do ya? No, you're looking for a unique experience with a greasy side of nostalgia, and The Varsity definitely delivers on that front. read more

This place is amazing!! I don't think i've been to a small place and it taste this good. I got a Bacon Double Cheese Burger and it could use some work but it was still freakishly good. The place is clean, quiet, they serve quickly, and tastes good. It does have quite a small menu compared to other places but it still has the essentials: Hamburgers, hot dogs, and chili dogs. What'a ya have??! The Varsity is an Atlanta landmark, so it just feels weird to visit this location in Norcross. I been several times before in past years, but today I felt the need to review. Went thru the drive-thru and service was fast and my order was accurate. Food was fresh and hot. I ordered a Chili Slaw dog with fries-$6 (don't judge me). They give you so many of the hand cut fries, oooh they're hard to resist. The hot dog was the right combination of sweet with the slaw and bitter with the onions! I usually order a frosted orange and apple pie, but I was already on the verge of high blood pressure. I didn't want my blood sugar to go up too (JOKE). Lol They've gone up in price I feel like, but I was treating myself today. This location has stepped its service and food up since the last time I came. My stomach isn't going to appreciate what I did to it this evening. I don't know whether to give this place 1 star for being garbage or 5 stars for being some kind of nostalgic food from an era when we thought packaged ramen was okay to eat, Koolaid was okay to drink and Twinkie's weren't meant for space travel and defying spoilage. The onion rings were crispy, greasy, delicious and what every stoner in every legal weed state is dreaming of. The burger and chili with side onions was repulsive and delicious. Not sure how that works, but it does in this case. The hot dog with chili, cheese, slaw and side onions was the same, but that slaw tasted like it should have been cleaner. This place is drive thru only for the time being. The wait was reasonable and one thing I did like about this place is they are doing their meals in little boxes with pre packaged zip lock bag with ketchup, mustard, salt/pepper and napkins. The bottom of the box is lined with tin foil so the grease doesn't seep through. Very convenient packaging but 4 stars because the fries were pretty saugy and almost cold. This review is specifically about their dessert offerings while closed during the corona. This location had the drive throuh open only, and it was speedy enough. This being my first time in this local "institution", the wifey insisted on me trying the FO (Frosted Orange) drink. I wanted the fried pies so we got the peach and the cherry one. The pies were delicious. Definitively an upgrade over the other fast food chain offerings. Piping hot and and not industrial tasting. The FO was acceptable. Apparently it's orange soda with soft serve ice-cream, and it tastes like the inside of a creamsicle. It was refreshing. But the kid size serving was still too much after dinner and both pies. My wife and I have wanted to stop at the Varsity for months while we are relocating to the Atlanta area. We stopped at prime dinner hour and there was only 1 other couple with kids. A huge dining room with dozens of open tables was concerning. We ordered our food which was 2 hot dogs meal and a triple cheeseburger meal. The fries were thick handcut and undercooked and soggy. They had been sitting for a while as were the room temp onion rings. The hot dogs were like they were sitting in water for days, limp and mushy. The best part of the meal was the vanilla milkshake which was not as good as McDonalds. We ended up throwing away a half of the burger, the fries and the onion rings. I was starved and ate the dogs with the chili. The chili was good with a little heat. We should have kept driving to go to Mojito's down the street. I expected way more for 35.00, not pitching half the meal. For a place that has hot dogs and hamburgers amd onion ring and fries, they didn't even do the limited choices well. Ok if you were raised in Atlanta you should have been to the Varsity at some point in your life. If your a transplant and have moved to Atlanta, you must go at least once. I know, hot dogs and burgers... but, its more about the experience. For what I like to call a "grease fix" it's worth it. A little known menu item is pimento cheese sandwich (can't say I've ate it since I usually only eat homemade)... How do you come to ATL and not hit The Varisty? The dogs are the winner. My personal faves are the slaw dogs. Just a damn good combo. Onion rings super crispy and the burger was surprisingly good. This Varsity doesn't give you the feel like the big one downtown Atlanta but when you have the craving and it's in close proximity, might as well. From the greasy union rings to the bland beef hot dogs, you'll be satisfied. I live pretty close to here and the place isn't ever packed on my visits. I think I like the fact that everything is always close together in their boxes and the food is always hot. Plus, I know what I'm in for when I come here. The burgers aren't the best and their chicken is a tad bit dry, but the food does it's job and makes you want to work out for the next week to burn the calories. read more

Eating at The Varsity Gwinnett location after eating at the Downtown (original) location is like getting to that untouched, pristine country town in a post-apocalyptic world after fighting your way out of a major city infested by hordes of mindless zombies who want to claw you down and eat your brains. Except instead of brains, these zombies want to eat Pimento Cheeseburgers and Chili Slaw Dogs and Frosted Orange Drinks. And instead of a virus or parasite, these zombies are created by the Travel Channel. And instead of milling about because they're mindless undead, they're just mindless tourists. There's no need to scream or yell. There's no waiting in line for 30 minutes. There's no need to blast someone in the face with a double-barreled 12ga shotgun to get through the room. There's no need to shank anyone for a seat. Yet, when you eat here at the Gwinnett location, you realize that you in fact really are one of the mindless zombies. And the people at Gwinnett are normal. Normal in the sense that they have not ordered 6 Cheeseburgers and 4 Hot dogs, 4 orders of Onion Rings with a Frosted Orange Drink. Normal because they, unlike you, do not crave these things like a zombie craves brains. Normal, because they, unlike you, do not shovel food into your mouth like your zombie primary directive forces you to. But really, do you care? No. Because those delicious Onion Rings are about to enter your mouth, scooped in by both of your clawed hands at once, and all will be well with your zombie world. Nom nom nom. Here's what you need to know about The Varsity Gwinnett: FOOD: The food is exactly the same as it is at the other locations. Except for the Onion Rings. The Onion Rings are best here, imo. The Onion Rings are a unique recipe that I cannot figure out. They're soft inside, yet so crispy and crackling outside that the coating often breaks off in thin flakes when you pick them up. These are the best Onion Rings I've ever had. The Varsity food is basically Burgers and Hot Dogs, with a variety of toppings and cheeses you add to it. Choose your cheese (Pimento!), whether you want Chili or Slaw or both, if you want it with Lettuce, Onion and Tomato, and choose your drink. The menu looks huge and intimidating, but that's basically it. PARKING: Unlike the Downtown location, Gwinnett location has tons of parking. I've never, ever, seen this place full. There are probably 200 parking spaces here. It's very close to the I-85/ Jimmy Carter onramp/ offramp and very convenient to get to (about 1 block off). ORDERING: What'll ya have? Unlike the Downtown location, where you have to stand in that massive room with lines that can take 30 minutes to get through, the Gwinnett location has a lot of registers with only 1 or 2 people at each, or cashiers are standing around waiting for you. Seriously, its like going to an untouched town in a zombie apocalypse world. Order, they'll give you your food on a tray. Lead time is fast, about 5 minutes. SEATING: Again, unlike the Downtown location, seating is plentiful. I've never seen the place full. There are four main rooms, in each room maybe 10 people filling seating for 100. SERVICE: What'll ya have? That's about it. You get your food, sit down and eat it. ATMOSPHERE: The Varsity, strangely, except with very few people. For the record, the Gwinnett location scored a 99 at their last State Inspection. TV's playing in each of the rooms. Pretty quiet with no people eating there. COST: Cheap. As cheap as a couple of bucks for a meal. But I don't know, because every time I come here, I order enough food for 5 people for myself. VALUE: Always a great value. VERDICT: 4/5 - I literally come here every single time I visit Atlanta. For some reason though, like how Stadium food tastes good when you're at a game; but when you're just sitting around somewhere it doesn't taste as good, it just doesn't feel right eating The Varsity food here where you're not in the "real" location. I guess the atmosphere of the "real" location, no matter how much I hate everything about it, is part of why I love it so much. If you have a taste for burger/hotdog meals with the 50s and 60s diner feel, combine with modernized fast food join, The Varsity should be your spot. The original store has the mega drive-in, this one here does not, but still it offer the same taste throughout what is now a franchise in Atlanta. The food here is good and made to order; what makes The Varsity fun is the ordering process. "What'll ya have?! What'll ya have?!" The men and women shouts at you from behind the counter, and if you are not prepared and not down with the lingo, you might be holding up the regulars behind you. My recommendation: Combo #2 with a burger, a hotdog, onion rings instead of fries, and THE orange drink. Their chili is amazing. and the onion rings are freshly made, and you can tell because the breading is uneven but thin and crispy, something that look like it would come from your own kitchen. The reason I picked this location, as opposed to the main venue, is the comparatively lower foot traffic, which means I can get in, get my order, gorge myself properly and then take off on my way, all within 10-15 minutes. read more

I'd have drippy poo for days after authentic Atlanta Varsity. So the fries are amazing on a good day, but not everyday is a good day. On other days they're significantly over or undercooked. I do like the burgers. Again, less greasy than other locations. Prices seem to be ridiculous these days, though. I can get a bigger, better slaw dog from QT for $1.19. The Varsity is a classic and one of my favorites. I always opt for the glorified burger add cheese and bacon, order of fries, and drink. Frosty orange is a favorite that many enjoy and I did as a kid. Either splurge for the fries and onion rings or split 2 orders with another person. Adding a fried onion rings to the burger is amazing. My job catered a food truck once and that's where I first experienced this combo. They had fresh cut fries before those "other guys" and fried in canola oil. The Varsity is a Georgia classic. From the decor and the signature greeting, you won't experience anything like it. The both Atlanta and Norcross locations have rooms where you can watch tv or take in the scenery and people watch. An American experience for everyone. read more

Been some years since I have been to the Varsity and the first time at this satellite location. I had the chili dog and the chili dog with cheese and slaw. Both were very good! Better than I remembered. On a lark, I tried the chili cheese fries and they were a disappointment -- the fries were not crispy, and the cheese was not up to snuff. This is a classic Atlanta institution and the dogs are what this place is about. Good prices for the dogs. I used the drive-thru and the wait time was way too long -- they need to work on this! Fun fact about this restaurant: they sued a small mom and pop restaurant in Kannapolis, NC for having the word "varsity" in their name. They won, forcing a name change for a small town restaurant that had been open for nearly 30 years because they were getting better reviews, and we're nearly 5 hours away.
