Very Tasty Pies My wife and I both like their pies very much. Their breakfast sandwiches are good as well. I am especially fond of the coconut cream and my wife likes the chocolate chiffon. Very tasty and fattening of course. read more

The pies here are the best I've ever had and the crusts are amazing. Cookies and bars always great but don't skip the excellent soups and sandwiches. read more

Cow Puddles! That is all, as a southern girl these cookies are heaven! This small town spot, services the citizens of Middleburg and beyond, they offer a variety of cookies, but they're best known for those puddles. When offering do yourself a favor and order more than one, we ordered one and had to return to the shop for more. read more

Horrible Horrible customer service!! Wish they hired people with respect for ALL their customers. Very bad experience and don't care how good their stuff tastes (we didn't try anything because the lady was SO rude) would never go back and waste my money there. read more

Love the sandwiches but the service stinks. I've been there many times and have never once seen the staff smile. EVER. It makes the atmosphere uncomfortable. read more

If you're a cookie lover and anywhere near Middleburg, you will absolutely want to stop here. Cookies were normal-sized (i.e. not the size of a dinner plate; as much as I love a good cookie, I certainly don't need one that large!) and inexpensive - 70 cents a piece, if I recall correctly. I tried three and the only one I was disappointed in was the molasses spice (definitely not enough spice or flavor). And I kind of regret not sampling the sandwich cookie - two chocolate chip cookies held together with buttercream frosting. Can we say genius?! read more

I've stopped here several times during trips to Middleburg, and it is by far my favorite. They have lots of tasty baked goods and there's always more I want to try. I think the best is the smore bar. read more

After reading the reviews here, we stopped to pick up a sampling of their cookies. Our favorite, by far, were the cow puddles--gross name for a delicious cookie. A close second were the okie dokies. The lemon bars were nothing special (not very lemon-y). I know other reviewers liked the mutton buttons, but we found the shortbread to be rather dry and crumbly and skimpy on the filling. We joked about the running theme in the comments regarding the service being without a smile, so we took that as a challenge to try to get one of them to crack...no luck! You'd think if you worked here with all the delicious smells, you might think about smiling once in a while! read more

Funny; I didn't think much of the no-smile service when I went here for the first time last weekend, but after reading many of the other reviews; you're right...nobody cracked a smile and the line was long. BUT...the cherry pie and chocolate milkshake we left with were mmmm, mmmm good! read more

Omg the pie..okay, truthfully, I've yet to make it into The Upper Crust. More truthfully.. we are low-carb eaters so this isn't a place we will be frequenting. However! Our super-nice new neighbors Larry & Dianna gave us a pie from The Upper Crust and oh my, it was to die for. I don't even like pies, as a rule, I always hate pie crust. This crust though.. oh, so flaky and yet somehow dense. I don't know what makes it special, but it is. We ate the whole pie!! And, remember, we supposedly don't eat sweets. I think it was the strawberry-rhubarb (95% sure), but maybe it was just heaven in a pie, who knows... I've been to the Upper Crust multiple times now - the pies are still delicious. I would say, however, that when it comes to the cookies/bars they are just okay to me. I've baked from scratch a lot over the years, and whatever recipes they're using seem like they could use improvement. I'd still recommend it for the pies though! read more

A horrible bakery. I think all these good reviews are wriiten by people who are not being objective about the quality of the pastry and food. They are so wowed by the rural setting, the charming porch swing, the cutesy pie names for things...etc... They gave us a chicken cutlet sandwhich with DARK MEAT! Slimy, sour, dried out old dark leg or thigh meat, made into a cutlet for the sandwhich. YUK! Then they charged almost $7 bucks, and wouldn't refund us, even though we didn't eat it. They were nasty, snooty and rude. Told us we shoud've ordered the white meat cutlet. I've never seen a dark meat cutlet anywhere else!! Cookies are over salted and oily. I'm not sure they're baking in real butter and good shortening. I wonder if they use any real butter at all. I'd like to ask them. Pies are heavy and leaden. In fact, everything is heavy. Nothing is flaky at all. Everything tastes like it was made with an eye to the budget, cheap, cheap cheap tasting, like bad brands at a discount food store. One more Middleburg expensive eaterie, with bad product, hidden behind lots of cute country charm. I think people should judge the food product itself, and not be so wowed by a few farms and silos, and a few colonial buildings made into very expensive tourist businesses it's a con. NOTE: This owner is big on sharing his political and social views on society. I agree with his views, and I'm part of his same belief system. I only mention this, becasue I don't want anyone to think that my very poor review of the food, is based on sour grapes over his politics. read more

I grew up in Middleburg and have lived in the Turks and Caicos Islands for the last 14 years. It is always my first stop when "coming home". Great croissants, baked goods, and the pies ( esp. the Rhubarb )...OMG, maybe its better for my waistline I don't live there anymore! It's family owned by great people, who have shown the community a lot of love over the years. I love this place!!! read more

Been here 6 times in the last 2 weeks. Great baked goods all around . Best scone in the world and I had a bacon egg and cheese croissant another time. I highly recommend this place for a quick stop in treat or for breakfast. A fun little whole in the wall. Just wished they opened at 7 so I could stop by àlmost every morning. read more

I've been here a few times, and the service is consistently horrible. No matter how good an establishment's food may be, if the service is bad, I'm just not a fan. Not once have I received kind or courteous treatment here. read more

The only reason we don't stop in here when we are in Middleburg is if it's closed! We haven't had anything bad here yet, and we've been coming for years and years. Their cow puddle cookies are absolutely delicious! I'm also a fan of their chicken salad sandwich and my husband LOVES the ham and cheese croissant. It has the ham and cheese inside and the croissant is always flakey and buttery. Their Jimmy cake is my dad's favorite; a vanilla cake with caramel icing. The seating there is limited, but that's one of the draws to this small local bakery. The staff is always friendly too. Make sure to bring cash though! If you forget there is an ATM in the Safeway across the street. read more

My wife and I decided to take a half day getaway to Middleburg, VA. So I looked on Yelp to get a heads up on a few places we might want to grab lunch. After walking around for a bit and checking out the other restaurants or deli's---we decided to come back to the Upper Crust bakery because we just wanted a sandwhich and some Cookies! I had the BBQ Pork Sandwhich, I believe was like $5.50. It was Awesome!!!!......it just came on a white round hard roll, but it came with "homemade" coleslaw on it that was great. I was actually very amazed at how great it tasted----considering this was known as a BAKERY!.......my wife had a Turkey with Acocado on wheat bread. She said it was Ok---the tomatoes were not great and it was just Ok. She really wanted my BBQ Pork Sandwhich!!......so of course, I let her try some. We decided to eat on the patio out back......what a great place to eat and chill out. It was totally shaded with about 6 to 8 tables, which each had a BIG umbrella. This place is basically and "old house", which is very cool, and so the back yard was turned into a very nice quiet patio area. (Actually, there is a Sign posted that says to 'turn your cell phone OFF). Now thats nice...... On our way out, I had to of course try the cookies since so many people on Yelp raved about them. So, I tried a chocolate chip, Molasses, and a couple of Cow Puddles. Forget ALL other cookies, the only one you need to buy is the COW PUDDLE cookie. That thing is MONEY!.......Its one of those thin, chewy butterscotch and almond cookies. I took one bite of the others and they weren't that great "to me". My wife got the LEMON MERINGUE pie, which was great!!! Note: They only accepted CASH or CHECK when we went, so hit up the ATM before you go. We will definitely go back to this place. The fact that Middleburg is only like a 35 min. drive from Reston, straight out RT. 50 West is awesome. I highly recommend this place to anyone! read more

Walking around this cute little town Middleburg, we decided to walk in here because, who doesn't like baked goods? We ordered two cookies (lame I know) but holy smokes was it good. They have your normal cookies and stuff you wouldn't normally see at a bakery. Walking in here is like walking into an old home and everything is most certainly baked on premises. Beware, they only take cash so no plastic here! read more

Yum! The best damn cookies in Middleburg. Maybe even the whole surrounding area, though I haven't been everywhere. I love this little bakery for everything they've got. read more

This is a fun place to visit in Middleburg. I purchased several pastries and pies over the holidays and all of them where enjoyed. The staff was friendly and I was surprised to find the sandwiches and other goodies they offer. read more

Their prices really are not that inexpensive. Also the croissant was delicious, but the sausage roll was just mediocre at best. Very crowded and the servers are not very friendly. read more

Personally the food here can be hit or miss for me. Some of the items, like the famous Cow Puddles and croissants are to die for, others I found sickly sweet and couldn't finish. It was a matter of finding what I like, but I've definitely made it a habit to stop by when I'm in town. A woman needs her carbs after all. I noticed a few other reviewers mention customer service, and some of the staff are more welcoming than others, but overall friendly enough in my opinion! read more

I can't even just describe how good their pies are. Please try as soon as possible! Whenever I get a chance to go to Middleburg, I try to make time to stop by The Upper Crust. The staff is very friendly and the food is very good too. Its often closed very early int he afternoon so I suggest trying for a brunch or lunch then take dessert to go. They also sell a variety of pastries, cookies, and confections. But... go for the pie. Trust me. read more

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Perfectly nuanced blend of flavors; not sugary sweet, just sweet from fruit and tart from rhubarb. Just delicious! The crust was perfect and I won't forget this pie and it replaces cherry pie as my favorite fruit pie. A co-worker brought a whole pie into work for a potluck and she generously gave me the rest. If I am ever in Middleburg I would stop by for other tasty treats and bring this pie home. Would I hesitate to ask said co-worker to pick this pie up for me? Probably, but I'd get over it and ask away! read more

Adorable local bakery with a good selection of fresh sandwiches and cookies. Sat out on the patio for lunch, however air conditioned seating is available. I will definitely be heading back for lunch and to pick up goodies again soon! A tucked away little treasure in Middleburg! TIP- they only take cash or check so be sure to bring one or the other. read more

Went there for the first time for some cow puddles...I was SOLD at first bite! It was so good! I will definitely come back again & again!

Been coming here since I was a little kid. I don't travel much down Route 50 but every chance I do Istop by the Upper Crust to pick up the delicious filled ham and cheese croissant, some cow puddles and snickerdoodles. Amazing homemade pies as well read more

Eclectic mix of food and drinks but all excellent. The cold brew coffee mixed with milk and vanilla is excellent. My son loves the organic burrito. read more

Great cookies and snack shop. Love everything about this place. The only complaint is that it is cash only and it seems that the tax rate always changes. I went in and bought 2 of the same cookie twice and each time paid a different price because the tax changes. read more

Fantastic chicken salad croissant sandwich! Loved this very pet-friendly place!

Best bakery around. I highly suggest going there for breakfast. Get the bacon, egg, and cheese croissant.

Small sandwiches and slow lines, but the pies are damn good and the cookie selection is not bad for a village shop.

Every single thing on the menu and in the pastry case is delicious. There are so many sandwiches and soups that it's hard to choose just one thing. If you are ever in need of a cake they make the most divine butter cream cakes. They have especially delicious chocolate chip, peanut butter, and molasses spice cookies. And I love their chicken salad on a croissant. As you can tell I could go on and on.... I am truly shocked at the two reviews that claim that they don't smile or are rude, I have only ever experienced the complete opposite. I always get a smile and a "Hi! Can I help you?". read more

What is there to say except it's the best bakery there is on the East Coast. Scott and his crew are the greatest.....don't touch the chocolate eclairs....that way there is more for me when I come in !!! read more

Awesome sandwiches!!! Even better cookies!! Can't beat the prices!! Will be back again soon!!

Good baking. Very bad service, no smile, no warmth. Why is it so hard to say hello and thank you? Just Rude.

We have been here several times. The sandwiches are very good. I have had the Chicken BLT several times and it. The chicken is perfect! We've also done the spicy chicken and the basic turkey and cheese. The cookies are delicious...the s'more bar is to die for and the pies are next on our list. I know people complain about the service but it's fine. You would think they'd be warmer...and the older woman we had the other day was welcoming. Certainly would never let that stop me from enjoying it! read more

I have family that sends me cookies from The Upper Crust all the way to me here in Texas. We love them.

My husband and I LOVE this place! It's an oasis in the land of the "one percent." The food is fantastic and the staff is lovely. We are Military and have eaten all over the world. Try it! You won't be sorry!!! The "grinch" ?... Is the NICEST person you will ever meet! Chicken salad on croissant is the Best!! Have never had a bad meal there. read more

Grabbed a quick bite here for breakfast pastries. Very fresh Danishes. Yummy! Also got a few cookies to go.

The pies alone are worth the trip here from here I live (1 hour). Any time I visit Middleburg, I have to pick one up!
