The business changed hands and it's every bit as good. The ice cream is great as is the service.

We were in the public parking lot across the street and noticed the 'soft serve sign" and naturally had to check them out! Very friendly staff, quick service, delisous soft serve and fun atmosphere! 4 standard flavors that you can twist and lots of different sundaes and shakes We will stop in again My rating rationale +1 Service +1 Food~Taste/flavor/quality +1 Presentation +1 Atmosphere/vibe +1 Value read more

Decided to stop by Gruto's on a whim. I was already full and not sure how I would finish some ice cream. I had never seen a banana soft serve, so I had to give it a try. Upon entering, there was a family of several waiting for their treats. Everything that was called out sounded more and more delicious. The staff was super cheerful and greeted everyone with such joy. Based on this alone, I would come back!!! Now on to the taste...this cone was amazing! The banana flavor was shocking as it was more of a vanilla looking flavor but tasted like a true banana. Now that I think about it, this as a shake would be dynamic! The cone was super fresh and the sprinkles were plentiful. There are a few chairs inside, but more for waiting. Now I imagine you could enjoy your treat inside, but it's a nice area to walk around. It's really a small space with a huge joy factor. Their menu is actually huge...from real scoops of cookie dough, to ice cream sundaes. Someone did order a sugar cone, so they may have waffle cones, but I did not see or smell any. My phone died with this photo of my cone, so I could not capture more. Give them a try and let me know what you think. You will not be disappointed if soft serve is your thing!! read more

Gruto's Soft Serve - Chocolate ice cream with chocolate sprinkles. - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Purcellville, Virginia

Gruto's Ice Cream is the same space as The Chocolate Palette. During the summer they serve ice cream, and during the winter fancy hot chocolate. Walking inside had me a bit confused, am I in Luisiana? They had it all sat up like a very excited college kid who had just been accepted to LSU. This is unexpected! It's a totally different vibe from The Chocolate Palette. That's all fine as long as the ice cream delivers! I got banana chocolate twist. They only had around four other flavors. It looked like it had come from a machine, which usually isn't good sign of quality ice cream. I'm sorry to say, this wasn't good at all. The banana flavor was completely non existent and the chocolate was very, very faint. I kept eating it, hoping to discover the hidden banana flavor, but no such luck. This actually got tossed because it was that bad. If you're in Purcellville and are looking for quality ice cream, skip over Gruto's. read more

This was exactly I was looking for. Old school soft serve ice cream. It was very good and delicious. Limited on flavors. About 10 people can sit inside. It's fun to visit here and have a good burger next door and walk some shops or go to the distillery across the street. read more

SOFT-SERVE ICE CREAM / PURCELLVILLE, VA / DESSERT TO-GO / 07/25/20 +The Black Raspberry and Vanilla Twist was pretty good. +The Whoopie Pie Sundae (6.25) was pretty good, as well. +They use the Square POS platform, which is cool because you can have your receipt emailed and not have to waste paper. -No loyalty rewards program. -The soft chocolate cookies tasted a little stale or 'airy'; I noticed them being removed from a take-out plastic container. -A takeout window would be better versus turning the knob and walking inside a small room. Soft serve ice cream always has a soft spot in my heart. If you're in the Purcellville area, go grab a small cone or two! This is definitely by far one of the best soft serve ice cream in not just Loudoun County but Virginia. The staff is friendly and both shops are small but ice cream is easy to eat without a table. I always gravitate towards the Raspberry Vanilla twist. This is the perfect combination. The Raspberry is out of this world. I haven't tried too many of the other flavors but this is because I love the Raspberry I can't get myself to get something else. My wife does go for the banana and chocolate twist which reminds her of the banana fudge bomb pop in a soft serve format. If you're nearby, definitely worth checking this place out! read more

the ice cream is good I've been having it since I was little but the service is terrible. I ordered a cone with cookie dough and they did give me it but my sister told me the cookie dough is at the bottom so I ate to the bottom and discovered they forgot it probably because while I was ordering the lady at the desk looks at the other side of the room and when I told them they forgot it they didn't even apologize and give me my order. read more

You know what I'm a big custard over ice cream fan so I didn't have high hopes, but it's actually really good, it's nice ice cream not icy you know like bad soft serve can be. Of course I don't like the price so I won't be here often. But maybe once a year. Kids serving are nice and it's a real small place, better to take to go read more

A Purcellville staple - we enjoy going to Gruto's and walking around town with our ice cream. Love the NOLA vibe inside. No seating inside - it's tiny! Outside is limited to one bench so just know that you need to buy it for the road or enjoy walking around the quaint town while eating your sweet treat. There are a few shops close by to browse or window shop and a few restaurants if you wanted to dine then head there for dessert. read more

The best soft serve ever. 10/10, it was creamy, fresh, and quick. The inside was small, but cozy. Again, the best, EVER.

Gruto's is our go-to ice cream spot from March thru October! I once had someone tell me "but it's just soft serve"..... Um, no... it's so much more! And then that person tried it and has been converted to a full-on Gruto's mega-fan! They have chocolate, vanilla, black raspberry and banana as their base flavors (which you can get in a twist of course). But they have a great list of sundae options... (the Fluffer Nutter is my favorite!). The ice cream is creamy and sweet. Our daughters ask to go there a few times a week! On a warm summer evening the line can get a bit long, but the staff inside do their best to crank out orders. And it is worth the wait! The "kids" size is a generous portion on its own so if you go with someone with a smaller appetite, I would recommend that over the "small." And definitely don't skip the whipped cream and cherry! read more

My daughter and I went to Gruto's in Purcellville on Monday night. I witnessed 3 things that, if I was the owner/manager, I would want to know about. There were 3 teenage girls working at the time. When we first arrived and were waiting in line to order, they were talking about a manager with whom they had complaints about. After that, a customer was questioning about what he was charged. He ordered a small, but noticed that the price for the large was the same amount and he wanted to know why. The girls couldn't really answer him very well and so he said he would rather have a large if it was the same price. They gave him a large but when he stepped outside to eat his ice cream, they started talking about him in a negative way. Finally, after my daughter ordered and she was eating her ice cream outside, I had to go back in to get napkins and one of the teenage girls was telling a teenaged boy customer that he didn't have to pay for his ice cream. Of course, I just heard one small piece of the conversation and it could have been on the up-and-up, but the perception was that they were giving ice cream away for free to friends. I think it's great when I see teens working in town. It seems, though, that they need training on what is proper to discuss within ear shot of customers. read more

Sooo disappointed. This spot has been on our list for a while. Today was the day. We each got chocolate banana soft serve. It was tasteless, not creamy, and expensive for a tiny soft serve. Bummer. Was hopeful. I never add reviews unless something is really good or really bad. Unfortunately, this is a disappointment read more

We absolutely love this place and follow them on social media for the day they'll be open for the season. There aren't many places in the area to get true soft serve so we come here a lot! They don't change the ice cream flavors, so your favorite will always be there, which for me, is banana! They are a small joint (literally 6 people can fit in the building) but it's always served quick and with a smile. My husband's favorite is the Elvis (banana ice cream with peanut butter and fluff) and I stick with my favorite banana in a cone! They use square, so you can use a credit card too! read more

So, it might have been because we had ordered the wrong item, but I wasn't too impressed by this place. We had gotten the Saturday special, the apple crisp with vanilla soft serve. The apple crisp was more like apple pie with an incredibly small portion size and not a whole lot of apple filling. Tne vanilla soft serve was ok, but I didn't think it was much better than any other place. Other people in my party had ordered the soft serve cones, which they enjoyed, so those might be a better bet. read more

My kids always beg to stop here but I take them to McDonalds instead. Why? Because even Mickey D's has better soft serve than the swill they serve at Grutos! Let me sum this up for you in two words - OVERPRICED and OVERRATED! I have no idea how anyone can rate this place five stars, maybe they are the same tastebudless folks who frequent Anthony's? I don't know but the ice cream is indeed awful! My only hope is that once Sweet Frog opens, Grutos will close and we can fill that space with something tasty! After posting this review the owner felt the need to respond so obviously I touched a nerve. Thanks for referring me to as "uneducated". I am not btw. Also, YELP is not quite an "anonymous internet review". You can see who I am and you can see my other reviews. If you disagree, fine but I write honest reviews and call it like it is. Just because someone else patronizes the place who owns an ice cream shop means nothing. Each to his own but I still say the ice cream, even if it is made from the finest products, is awful. read more

Holy moly - this is the best soft serve I've ever had. After my wife and I ate at Magnolia's we hunted for something sweet to fulfill her prego cravings. Yes, that's right. You try get in the way of a pregnant woman's sweet craving. See what happens! This place was just down the street, and what a cute place it was! Keep in mind, I do NOT have a sweet tooth. So, when i say I really enjoyed this, it means a lot. Its creamy, not runny, but not too thick, and it sweet but not too sweet. You taste the flavor, not the sugar. We had the black raspberry and that was absolutely amazing! It was so good, we turned around after we got to our car to get another one! That's how good it was. Also, service is 10/10. Friendly and incredibly awesome. She really brightened our day! Maybe thats why the soft serve tastes so good? Made with love! :D read more

Gruto's Soft Serve - the menu of the restaurant - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Purcellville, Virginia

Amazing soft serve ice cream that I will always go to if I have the opportunity. And things of that nature.

The best soft serve ice cream I've ever had. Ever. EVER. I'm not exaggerating, here. Why? Because it really was the best ever. It was so good that I had to walk back after I finished my one cone and grab another, bigger one. Most soft serve ice cream either comes too sweet, too icy/runny, or too custard-like. In the game of goldilocks in the world of soft serve, Gruto's served the one that's juuuuuuuuust right. How right? Just the right amount sweetness, and melts in your mouth in the milkiest way. Not watery, not custardy. The best part? The flavor. Oh man, that black raspberry swirled with vanilla is just so delightful and fresh. I couldn't resist another cone. Locals rave about Gruto's. If you happen to be passing by the town, stop by and grab a cone, or two (or three), or try out their shakes and other sweet delights on the menu. Trust me, you really won't be disappointed. read more

You can't go wrong with Gruto's. Their menu is solid and the ice cream is delicious.

I'm sort of an ice cream freak- my father loved his bowl of ice cream every night and I caught the fever from him. I even worked at an ice cream shop as a teenager and would really like to get into the business myself some day, after I can retire from my real job. Grutos is very good- their soft serve flavors are for the most part very good, the chocolate and vanilla both taste very good and they have a nice variety. I especially like the chocolate, it was great in my opinion. One flavor that didn't hit the mark for me was the black raspberry- it actually tasted more like black cherry to me and since it was so pink, I think it might actually be black cherry. Black raspberry is more of a purple than pink and has a distinctive flavor- Grutos' version didn't have that flavor, not even close. I think they need to add hot fudge to their menu- this can be done with soft serve, it's okay if it melts a little. Hot fudge is just a staple that should be in every ice cream shop. The employees are incredibly nice and there is a definite positive vibe in the shop, which makes you want to come back more often. People who complained that they only accept cash should go back, credit cards are accepted now. If I lived in Purcellville I'd probably stop in at least twice a week. Good job Grutos! read more

My husband and I just moved here recently and I got sick and had a horrible sore throat so I wanted Ice Cream. We passed by this place a few times so I finally asked to try it out. I have to say this is the best Soft Served Ice Cream ever! I love their Chocolate. It is a small place but the Ice Cream is awesome! They have a few different flavors and plenty of options for toppings, their Starbuck shake is super yummy. Gruto's is now officially our new Ice Cream shop, so if you are considering getting Ice Cream this summer I would look no further and stop right here, this is the place. FYI: They only accept cash, luckily the first time we stopped by we had cash on us. read more

We've been going to Gruto's for ice cream in downtown Purcellville for the last two summers, and I can't say enough good things. From the delicious ice cream to the fantastic, cheerful service we get there, this place is most certainly my family's favorite for dessert. We've stopped in numerous times after softball or football practice, only to run into teammates and have social time while sitting outside eating ice cream and watching the world go by. My 11 yr old son's favorite order is their famous "Triple Decker Belly Wrecker", which is three layers of ice cream and toppings in a huge cup: if you finish it you get your name up on the chalkboard inside. I think the last time we were in, you had to have finished four of them (over the course of the summer) to make the leaderboard. Big thumbs up from this Purcellville family (with four kids voting!) ~H. read more

After a long day of white river tubing and getting lost for a few hours between the 3 tri states (West Va, Maryland and Virginia) we finally made it to a local BBQ and then stumbled upon Grutos soft serve! My day went from okay to awesome with their soft serve ice cream. I got the black cherry because I normally go with strawberry flavored ice cream. And damn that was a good choice! The shop was nice and convenient with cute colored chairs outside to enjoy the scenery of the small local town. Might have to make another trip before it gets cold here in Virginia. read more

While I can say that soft serve is not up there in my book with gelato or frozen custard, I do like Gruto's. And while my kids may miss putting 12 pounds of gummy bears on their yogurt at the bible beater yogurt joint, they still tout Gruto's as their favorite in town. I like to kick it old school and get a chocolate malt, my husband the root beer float. The only thing that would improve the place is perhaps an old fashioned soda fountain counter. They have all of the product, with walk-up window service. As for some of the really negative reviews, I don't see how some can be so callous. Honestly, it's ice cream, how bad can it be? read more
