Decided to stop by Gruto's on a whim. I was already full and not sure how I would finish some ice cream. I had never seen a banana soft serve, so I had to give it a try. Upon entering, there was a family of several waiting for their treats. Everything that was called out sounded more and more delicious. The staff was super cheerful and greeted everyone with such joy. Based on this alone, I would come back!!! Now on to the taste...this cone was amazing! The banana flavor was shocking as it was more of a vanilla looking flavor but tasted like a true banana. Now that I think about it, this as a shake would be dynamic! The cone was super fresh and the sprinkles were plentiful. There are a few chairs inside, but more for waiting. Now I imagine you could enjoy your treat inside, but it's a nice area to walk around. It's really a small space with a huge joy factor. Their menu is actually huge...from real scoops of cookie dough, to ice cream sundaes. Someone did order a sugar cone, so they may have waffle cones, but I did not see or smell any. Gruto's Ice Cream is the same space as The Chocolate Palette. During the summer they serve ice cream, and during the winter fancy hot chocolate. Walking inside had me a bit confused, am I in Luisiana? They had it all sat up like a very excited college kid who had just been accepted to LSU. This is unexpected! It's a totally different vibe from The Chocolate Palette. That's all fine as long as the ice cream delivers! I got banana chocolate twist. They only had around four other flavors. It looked like it had come from a machine, which usually isn't good sign of quality ice cream. I'm sorry to say, this wasn't good at all. The banana flavor was completely non existent and the chocolate was very, very faint. I kept eating it, hoping to discover the hidden banana flavor, but no such luck. This is definitely by far one of the best soft serve ice cream in not just Loudoun County but Virginia. The staff is friendly and both shops are small but ice cream is easy to eat without a table. I always gravitate towards the Raspberry Vanilla twist. This is the perfect combination. The Raspberry is out of this world. I haven't tried too many of the other flavors but this is because I love the Raspberry I can't get myself to get something else. Gruto's is our go-to ice cream spot from March thru October! I once had someone tell me "but it's just soft serve"..... Um, no... it's so much more! And then that person tried it and has been converted to a full-on Gruto's mega-fan! They have chocolate, vanilla, black raspberry and banana as their base flavors (which you can get in a twist of course). But they have a great list of sundae options... (the Fluffer Nutter is my favorite!). The ice cream is creamy and sweet. Our daughters ask to go there a few times a week! On a warm summer evening the line can get a bit long, but the staff inside do their best to crank out orders. And it is worth the wait! The "kids" size is a generous portion on its own so if you go with someone with a smaller appetite, I would recommend that over the "small." My daughter and I went to Gruto's in Purcellville on Monday night. I witnessed 3 things that, if I was the owner/manager, I would want to know about. There were 3 teenage girls working at the time. When we first arrived and were waiting in line to order, they were talking about a manager with whom they had complaints about. After that, a customer was questioning about what he was charged. He ordered a small, but noticed that the price for the large was the same amount and he wanted to know why. The girls couldn't really answer him very well and so he said he would rather have a large if it was the same price. They gave him a large but when he stepped outside to eat his ice cream, they started talking about him in a negative way. Finally, after my daughter ordered and she was eating her ice cream outside, I had to go back in to get napkins and one of the teenage girls was telling a teenaged boy customer that he didn't have to pay for his ice cream. Of course, I just heard one small piece of the conversation and it could have been on the up-and-up, but the perception was that they were giving ice cream away for free to friends. I think it's great when I see teens working in town. It seems, though, that they need training on what is proper to discuss within ear shot of customers. read more

We absolutely love this place and follow them on social media for the day they'll be open for the season. There aren't many places in the area to get true soft serve so we come here a lot! They don't change the ice cream flavors, so your favorite will always be there, which for me, is banana! They are a small joint (literally 6 people can fit in the building) but it's always served quick and with a smile. So, it might have been because we had ordered the wrong item, but I wasn't too impressed by this place. We had gotten the Saturday special, the apple crisp with vanilla soft serve. The apple crisp was more like apple pie with an incredibly small portion size and not a whole lot of apple filling. Tne vanilla soft serve was ok, but I didn't think it was much better than any other place. I'm sort of an ice cream freak- my father loved his bowl of ice cream every night and I caught the fever from him. I even worked at an ice cream shop as a teenager and would really like to get into the business myself some day, after I can retire from my real job. Grutos is very good- their soft serve flavors are for the most part very good, the chocolate and vanilla both taste very good and they have a nice variety. I especially like the chocolate, it was great in my opinion. One flavor that didn't hit the mark for me was the black raspberry- it actually tasted more like black cherry to me and since it was so pink, I think it might actually be black cherry. Black raspberry is more of a purple than pink and has a distinctive flavor- Grutos' version didn't have that flavor, not even close. I think they need to add hot fudge to their menu- this can be done with soft serve, it's okay if it melts a little. Hot fudge is just a staple that should be in every ice cream shop. The employees are incredibly nice and there is a definite positive vibe in the shop, which makes you want to come back more often. People who complained that they only accept cash should go back, credit cards are accepted now. If I lived in Purcellville I'd probably stop in at least twice a week. Good job Grutos! read more

After a long day of white river tubing and getting lost for a few hours between the 3 tri states (West Va, Maryland and Virginia) we finally made it to a local BBQ and then stumbled upon Grutos soft serve! My day went from okay to awesome with their soft serve ice cream. I got the black cherry because I normally go with strawberry flavored ice cream. And damn that was a good choice! We've been going to Gruto's for ice cream in downtown Purcellville for the last two summers, and I can't say enough good things. From the delicious ice cream to the fantastic, cheerful service we get there, this place is most certainly my family's favorite for dessert. We've stopped in numerous times after softball or football practice, only to run into teammates and have social time while sitting outside eating ice cream and watching the world go by. My 11 yr old son's favorite order is their famous "Triple Decker Belly Wrecker", which is three layers of ice cream and toppings in a huge cup: if you finish it you get your name up on the chalkboard inside. I think the last time we were in, you had to have finished four of them (over the course of the summer) to make the leaderboard. Growing up my grandmother used to make black raspberry ice cream. It was my favorite thing every year. It wasn't soft serve but it was delicious. When I discovered this gem a couple years back I was so excited. I LOVE their black raspberry so much. I get a pint to go for my family and to take to my mom too. While I can say that soft serve is not up there in my book with gelato or frozen custard, I do like Gruto's. And while my kids may miss putting 12 pounds of gummy bears on their yogurt at the bible beater yogurt joint, they still tout Gruto's as their favorite in town. I like to kick it old school and get a chocolate malt, my husband the root beer float. The only thing that would improve the place is perhaps an old fashioned soda fountain counter.
