B&L Custard is a welcome change from the normal ice cream and frozen yogurt joints that you may be used to. They are located nearby to the highly rated Spelunker's in Front Royal. Well...one evening we decided to try the custard at both establishments, back to back, and rate them. My girl and I both agreed that the custard at B&L had a better taste and consistency. Certainly a very unofficial test, but both of us were adamant that B&L's custard was superior. So...if you want one of Spelunker's famous burgers and fries, absolutely go there...but stop at B&L for your custard dessert fix. Had to stop in the visitor's center in Front Royal to find the custard my wife and I so needed late in the afternoon after hours of driving through the mountains. They pointed us here just off 522 near the historic district. The parking is a little funky here and hard to describe. I can see chaos ensuing on a typical warm summer evening but we were here well before dusk and the only ones at that. The server was friendly and talkative as we approached the bright white trailer to place our order. We each got a cone, mine vanilla and my wife's swirl. She surprisingly didn't get her's dipped in chocolate. Pro tip: the small size is plenty big for most mortals. Our custard was satisfying and definitely hit the spot. They have some picnic tables and umbrellas to sit and enjoy your frozen delights while people watching others trying to get in and out of the narrow one way parking lot. Lastly, you might need some patience turning left out of there to get back to 522 but after a nice cone or shake you should be plenty chill to make it easy. read more

This is a great little stand with a significant variety of frozen custard. They have your classic soft serve with vanilla, chocolate, or swirl. The extra small is enough for me, so they give you a lot of frozen custard. One warning is that they only take cash. read more

Had a banana split from here which was pretty good. Wasn't as good as swirlies in Manassas but definitely satisfied my craving. They have some benches outside for seating. I assume this place gets busy during the summer months but today it was just me and the hubby. read more

I decided to stop by this place to grab a quick dessert and I was pleased at how good it was. I ordered a special sundae and it was really good. I was hoping it would be a bit bigger but I wasn't too upset it wasn't cause honestly I didn't even need to eat it. I'll be coming back for sure. They offered my dog a doggy ice cream and that was really nice of them. The lady who took my order was very nice and it came out very quickly. read more

I recently decided to give the stand another try after a few disappointed summers in a row. I am not sure if it is under new ownership or what but I was pleasantly surprised. This place is okay but leaves your mouth with an after taste that's not too good. I've been here with my children out of convince because the only other ice cream stand is on the other side of town. The amount of ice cream is good for the price. read more

Have been going here since they first opened and it used to be great! My family loved going. They changed the recipe or are using a different ice cream now and it is not good. It definitely does not taste like frozen custard or even good soft serve. The service was also awful - the sundae orders were not correct- and the lady taking the orders was rude. read more

Bill and Linda are awesome people and owners of these stands. There are two stands in town , one on South St , the other on 6th St. Great frozen custard , the prices are a little high on some of the sundae's though ! Overall they are neck and neck with Spelunker's for the best in town. read more

The ice cream is good but my cone was stale! The prices are higher than i would expect for the quality that you get but i suppose that can be forgiven. What cannot be forgiven is the attitude of the young lady that helped me! She seemed to not want to be there, she never smiled, very bland demeanor - just generally unhappy and didn't feel the need to disguise it. When working in customer service you must have a good attitude. I probably won't be returning. read more

I used to love B & L and have eaten here many times. I live in Gainesville, VA and stop here anytime I have been on I-81 and am coming home. Today was probably my last visit. I had a waffle cone with chocolate ice cream. The waffle cone was fine. The chocolate ice cream wss horrible. It had lots of dark brown/blabk flecks in it, which I have never gotten before and I always order chocolate. The chocolate soft serve was bitter and salty. My husband tried it and said the exact same thing. The vanilla pup cup we ordered for our dog had a "topping" on it. We have ordered pup cups at a dozen different places, and have NEVER gotten a topping. This topping was peanut butter, which our dog will not eat. The didn't ask, they just put it on. Very weird. I really don't think we will be back unless they go back to their original chocolate mix (which was excellent) for their soft serve. The people in front of us also sent back a "chocolate sundae" because the woman said the chocolate soft serve tasted "sour" so I guess the objectional taste wasn't just us! read more
