I came here for Halloween on Thursday, and I really liked it. They did a good job revamping the space to make it more upscale. I didn't necessarily feel like I was in an old dingy basement anymore, now it's more like a dark...nicer...basement? The bartenders and bouncers are REALLY nice, sort of shocking since it's one of the "most exclusive clubs", but all in all I would definitely come back here given that they actually let me in =) read more

Just attended a party at this shithole. Everything was fine until I put my napkin down on the bar in front of this old White man. He grabbed me by The collar and I thought he was kidding but he proceeded to scream in my face telling me not to put my dirty shit in front of him. My friend got in the middle and pulled me away and everything was fine. But it was still weird. So cut to us standing there while he kept looking at us. So my friend asked him if he had a problem and he said "no I wanna see what this faggot does." We were shocked. We started getting into it with him and he ended up walking away. This wasn't the worst part however. The worst part was that we went to almost every bouncer we could find in the building and told them what happened and how messed up it was and nobody did anything. My friend went up to one and told them the story and he said "ok calm down" and then went over to talk to him. We see them laughing and smiling together and then nothing happens. So we talk to the bouncer again and the bouncer gave us a bullshit response of "He said something different" and nothing happened. We talked to multiple employees to try and explain the situation and nobody did anything. The actual interaction was messed up, yes, but the fact that nobody did anything was worse. Notoriously disappointing. The Underground in Chicago, Illinois provides yet another exemplary case of squandered nightlife potential. Whereas the acclaimed establishments of Las Vegas and Miami (after which The Underground seems to be modeled) boast amenable staff and a satisfying experience, the personnel and ambiance here are best described as sinister and hostile, respectively. The first difficulty encountered precedes even stepping foot into the facility. Although claiming exquisite service and a lavish setting, the venue fails to arrange organized lines and prefers instead disorderly crowding around the entrance area. As such, expect several frustrating tries to reach the front of the entryway and yet more to obtain the attention of an employee. Should access within be permitted, do not be startled to receive bribes from doormen, being asked "to take care of my guy," or otherwise be threatened to return outside and "stay behind the rope." If it still sounds appealing to go inside and buy drinks, by all means do so- but in that case I should forward you the email address of a particular Nigerian banker whose scam you would consider also to deserve your money. read more

Worst most pretentious place ever. There's no one in the club at 1am on a Thursday, and we walk in with 15 industry professionals who work around the corner. We spend money, and we tip well. We walked out after 5 minutes because they got picky with our friend's clothing choice at the door. Don't go there, this club is in the last stage of its life cycle. The management needs to rethink their strategy because the place was way over staffed, and it's not a good look when your employees don't look busy. The dj was essentially playing stale hip hop (like 6 months old- not like good classic old.) There were only some Schaumburg chicks shaking their fake hair around. Don't go- ever. read more

Coming from NYC and getting stuck in Chicago because of a missed American Air connection flight couldn't have been better, if it weren't for The Underground. After a few hours of bar hopping, I drifted into this hot spot. Unlike NYC clubs, there was no attitude at the door and the bartenders remembered who I was. A big plus! Not to mention the music was off the hook and so were the women. I'm thoroughly impressed and will be back when I actually come to visit Chicago on purpose. read more

Underground is a fun place, especially after hours from 2 am onward. It's small and can get cramped but we have always found empty couch space to claim (even if not purchasing bottle service). The crowd is friendly and well dressed and each time I've been the DJ has played a GREAT mix of house, top 40, older favorites, remixes and more. Drink prices are as expected for a club in this area, not too expensive or cheap. If you are coming with men be prepared to a) buy bottle service b) come super early c) pay someone a very large "tip" at the front door d) be "someone" or know "someone". Cool place. This is definitely the HOT spot in Chicago where you can find A-listers partying with the rest. I understand some of the other people's bad or negative reviews but they have to understand that this place is a bit small and they can reach capacity very quickly, so my advice to those people is to get there early. I wanted to give them two stars, but since there was a line outside and they whisked me in front of everyone I have to add one star for that. Once you get inside though, the place is very small, cramped and has potential to be fun if it weren't for all the creepy old men lurking around. And when I say creepy, I really mean it. There was an older man who was in his late 40's, in a full on suit and tie, and a midget who came up and started groping me from behind. He was kicked out in 2 seconds (another point for the security/bouncers) but still.. who let him in?? Go here once and check out the scene.. you will see groups of 4-5 middle aged men standing around awkwardly in little circles, eyeing all the girls, while pretending to sway their heads to the beat. Overall an okay experience. Had I paid to get in, this review would be very different. My friend yelled to some guy she knew who worked there and he let us right in. (It was raining and there were a TON of people waiting ahead of us). Once in I did see some guy that everyone said played for the Bulls (very hot by the way). The music was okay, I really don't drink but a couple of guys did offer. Everyone says this place is beautiful people, but everyone was kind of sweaty and worn to me. Only downside is I guess the crowd is a little pretentious. I am biracial and if you don't have but length blonde hair and an eating disorder good luck on meeting a descent guy. Sometimes you are looking for an up-all-night, balls-to-the-wall, pretend-you-are-in-the-movie-adaptation-of-Entourage, type of Chicago experience. When you are, Underground is the place to be. You need to know somebody to get on the guest list. Once you do though, you are in for a great time. I was on the hospitality committee for a conference and we planned to have our event at this venue. When we got there, the bouncer was incredibly rude and unhelpful. He would answer questions with one word answers and was being incredibly dismissive and arrogant. Then when we got in we found out that not only were they not prepared for the event, but they stopped letting people in with the wristbands. We eventually had to move the event to another bar half way through the night, which completely ruined our party moods. The drinks were ridiculously expensive and you can't hear anything anyone is saying because the music is deafeningly loud. This place is horrible, avoid it like the plague. read more

Bottle service everywhere which I find annoying, even if we do get it for free. I had a BLAST at Underground! I'm from NY and came to Chicago for the weekend, and unexpectedly found myself at a fashion show being held at Underground. Maybe having an 'in' with the show and maybe having a ton of beautiful people everywhere helped my opinion develop of the club, but there is NO denying the great music that was playing. Big props to the DJ there that night. And to me, anywhere I go in terms of clubs, as long as the music and the people are good, thats all that matters. The only weak thing I noticed about the place was the layout. The bars are in 2 corners of the place (on the same side of the wall) which definitely creates a bottleneck, but it wasn't too much of a problem if you patiently maneuvered through it. read more

I've been going to the underground for three years now and have to give this place credit for one thing: it's the best club in Chicago. Now that monicker comes with a lot of good and bad. The good is that is that club continues to try and redefine the club experience in Chicago and on a good nite it's hard to find a place that comes close to replicating how much fun you will have. That being said the club has slowed down in providing the same explosive nites that it provided years ago. However it's still better than it's competitors such as Cuvee. I sympathize with the frustration expressed by some about not being let in and what not. The truth is you have to have the expectation you're not getting in at 12:30 when there is a huge line and a packed house unless you know someone. Even then it could be a long shot. Secondly, don't show up at the door with an army of guys. It won't work for you, ever. Lastly, dress the part. It may seem ridiculous but don't show up in a t-shirt or polo shirt with tennis shoes on and be mad because no one is paying attention to you at the door. My recommendation is to show up as a group of four to six with 50:50 ratio (or better). If you really want to get in and you don't know anyone, show up earlier like 11:30 and you or odds will be better. I known a few door people and despite the comments they aren't all that bad. You just can't expect them to let in your massive group at peak hours when there numerous other groups like yours at the door. read more

I don't understand why this place didn't get better ratings! Maybe cause I'm a tourist and don't know of any better spots, but my girls and I definitely had a great time here. Yeah we had to pay a $10 cover on a Saturday night, but for the hip hop music and attractive crowd it was definitely worth it. I've been here one too many times since I have friends who are regular frequenters and would have to say that I'd be okay with never returning. Don't get me wrong, I've definitely had some fun wild nights here, but it's just not my cup of tea anymore post-college. If you're at a stage in your life where you're looking for crazy late nights patrolling for some club honeys, this place is definitely for you. If that is the case, I would recommend either getting a table, coming early or with a lot of girlfriends, or knowing the bouncers because the line can be an atrociously long wait. I went for a private event which translates to free drinks and hor d'oeuvres. I thought the staff would be really snobby and un-helpful because it was a free event and tips are always poor in those situations. Not only were they nice, but they were all beautiful people; people that you don't see in Chicago (sorry to say) on a regular basis. The decor was a little cheesey/industrial and there were too many tables and not enough places to stand and talk--we had access to tables but I'm sure this place makes their money with bottle service. I'd give it five stars for my experience, but I've tried to go in the past, and the doormen have always been pretty rude and hierarchical about who and who did not get to come in--all for a place that wasn't THAT amazing. read more

2 of our guy friends walked in about 45 seconds before us (2 girls). When we got up to the entrance we were denied entry because they "require reservations". Our 2 friends did not have any kind of reservations. We stepped to the side for about 10 minutes then I walked back up & asked "do you really require reservations to enter?" to a different gentleman. He responded "yea" so I said "that's weird because 2 of my guy friends just got in without reservations" & his response was "yea that's how it works. You'll have to ask the main people- I'm just security. We have a dress code". Which I thought was weird because we were both dressed nicely, but it was raining so our hair was wet from the walk there. Neither of us looked horrible at all- & actually the guys that entered before us were just in jeans & t-shirts.
