This review is long overdue, from a Saturday in 2018. We had table service at a swanky rooftop lounge for my bachelorette party, but we still wanted to dance after closing. The DJ suggested The Underground, and I will be FOREVER thankful. When we arrived, the line was horrendous. But we got lucky and didn't have to wait long. This establishment is absolutely racist. Me and a friend came tonight (both black working professional males 30+) because Google reviews showed it as the late night option. Got there stood in line behind 3 white males after a reasonable wait, when our turn came up they starting letting people in from a separate line for about 20 minutes before one guy came up to us and said "sorry fellas wristbands only". We overhead a south East Asian gentleman that looked to be the manger tell the guys don't let anyone in you don't like. This Is all based on a sober one time visit. The best description for this place is a bar area with a dance floor. Excellent to go out and take pictures, great scenery and aesthetic for those who like to go and create picture memories. Beverage services were quick from what I observed from those who were drinking. The bathrooms were in rough condition and are in a very inconvenient area in the establishment. As a dance club I do not recommend this place. The dance floor is a traffic area for those going to the bathroom, establishment workers, and bottle girls walking out. Many drinks are spilled on the floor so it is sticky, and sometimes slippery. Come here to drink, talk, take pics, not really the best dance experience compared to other establishments. read more

My friends and I made a bottle service reservation in January for APRIL! Months in advance. I communicated with their staff member Rosie quite a few times in those months leading up to the reservation. We traveled from out of state and had a group of 10. We booked a hotel right next to the club. Last night we get to the club and the bouncers let us know that there was a private event booked and all reservations were cancelled. I didn't receive a single text or phone call. I wasn't the only one that happened to. No one was told about this. We planned our trip around this. So disappointing. Like most exclusive clubs' Yelp pages, the bad reviews are often from people who didn't actually get to experience the club/business itself. Getting in often depends on the night - sometimes as a girl, you can walk right in, while other times, it'll be guest list only and you can't get in no matter how long you wait outside. To get in, fulfill as many of these as possible: 1) go early (~11pm or earlier) 2) have connections 3) get a table 4) be female 5) have a group of only females 6) dress extra nicely However, when you actually get in, the club itself is pretty amazing. Great music, attractive crowd, cool atmosphere. Bottle service here is amazing - the bottle girls are always standing nearby to pour your drinks the second you finish (also, they bring free cookies!), and you can store your jackets/purses under the seats. Although Underground is more fun/lavish with bottle service, I've always had fun even on nights without a table. Definitely recommend! read more

It's been a good five years since I've last visited Underground.....probably because I'm getting old and my joints can't handle it anymore (*tear*). I used to prefer clubs over bars/lounges back then, but my old lady self prefers bars/lounges over clubs now. Since this was for a friend's birthday, I made an exception. We came on a Saturday night a few minutes before 11:00 p.m. because it was free cover until then. Why is it free? Because it's so early that 10% of the club is occupied and as a result, you better believe eyes are on you if you're dancing! But hey, free is free. Here are the pros and cons of this club: PROS - Friendly staff (we got entry cards for a free guest for next time AND an employee even came up to us when we were standing by the dance floor and said we could sit down at one of the unreserved tables next to the DJ booth until it sold - value $1000+) - Decor and color scheme is nice (white tables and seats in a dark purple/blue lighting scheme) - Free cover before 11:00 p.m. - Two separate rooms depending on your mood (the other area is a little smaller, has a bar, different music playing and brighter lighting) CONS - As time progressed, I noticed the club had about 90% girls! Talk about uneven ratio of girls and guys. - Top 40's music with downtime, so it's not a consistent flow of good beats - Not a big area for dancing because the center of the main room is filled with tables and seats, and not many people dancing in the small dance area Overall, I think I'll stick to my bars and lounges. read more

Celeb sightings are always a plus, especially on a first visit (though it was after lolla, so I can't speak for every night). Although the Underground is small, cramped and crowded, it still feels exclusive. There aren't too many creepy guys or fat/ugly girls dressed like hookers inside (so be mindful of who you go with if you want to get in). Plus the guys are friendly without getting uninvitedly physical, which should be a given, but really this place has a classier crowd. The music is eclectic and always danceable, ranging from top-40s to old school hip-hop. Also, the illuminated maps on the wall make a cool decoration, fitting for the club's theme of wartime/world domination. The drinks are pricy ($10 for well drinks), but if you make nice with the bartenders, they will hook you up. Coat check is $3. There isn't anywhere to sit (except tables which are a 2 bottle minimum). But overall, the attractive and exciting personages is what gives this place its edge. read more

On Friday after my friends were let into The Underground Chicago I was last in line and stopped to have my ID further reviewed (a door man's prerogative). The door man said said "this isn't you, this is a black girl" to my darker complexion in the picture. I explained "I'm half black, sometimes I look lighter in the winter than in the summer and the DMV won't let me get a new photo." I smiled big to show him how I have the same exact smile in my photo. He handed it to another door guy for a second opinion. That man laughed out loud and handed it to a third man who handed it to another door guy and they all laughed in unison and said they would confiscate my ID. I stood in disbelief and insult and embarrassment at all the people watching. "I'm 30 years old and biracial" I protested standing outside in the 4 degree wind. I showed two credit cards with my name on it, offered to pull up my Facebook account, whatever they wanted. I was pushed outside of the line. I asked another door man to please check my ID with an authentication machine. When they came, it seems they also work with this racist establishment since instead of chastising the bouncer, they told the couple not to show their faces there never again or they'll be arrested. We said no, and they abused and assaulted my Arabic friend in the section. Anyone out of state; DO NOT COME. We will be perusing litigation. Horrible service. We were with a group of eight girls and multiple people in our group asked for a glass of tap water to drink between alcoholic beverages. We were told the only water we could get was $10 for a mini bottle. We told the bartender that establishments with a liquor license are required to provide free tap water upon request. A group of my girl friends got in no problem on a slow Thursday night; however, the security/bouncer decided that they were going to charge a cover fee for the two of my queer friends with no explanation. All six of us women decided to leave, and we watched several other straight presenting women walk in without being on any list or paying the cover charge while waiting for our uber. Not that it should matter, but we are all in our early twenties and were dressed as to be expected for club attendance. Brie our hostess had the best customer service I've seen in a long time! We came in for a bachelorette at 1am and had a reservation for a tiny corner table. The second she saw we were a bachelorette, she upgraded us and gave us the best service all night! Candles, signs, shots, everything! GIRLS STAY AWAY FROM HERE! My group came here and instead of the security guards looking out for women they were buying and putting roofies in mine and my friends drinks . One security guard after he roofied my friend was following her all over and getting handsy. One bouncer was sexual harassing me the entire night after I repeatedly denied him and said multiple times I have a boyfriend he still proceeded to get handsy and not take no for an answer. At one point the security guards weren't letting our boyfriends dance with or near us, like they were trying to keep us separate. It's not a safe place I do not recommend it! I have to say normally I hate going to clubs because I hate waiting outside. It was a bit of a wait but because it was raining the staff did a good job of getting me in quickly. The bartenders were awesome especially on a busy Friday night they still made sure we had everything we needed and we were just drinking at the bar. I met a few managers while at the bar and I think they do a great job making sure everything goes smoothly. The Dj was awesome. My girls and I spent the ENTIRE night dancing away .. service there was truly impressive... Last night I went there intending to get bottle service with a family member in town and our partners. When we got to the front the bouncer said, "party and bottles only" which was fine so we agreed. A few minutes later he said, "If you aren't Serbian you can't get in", which was another way to tell us they weren't letting people of color in. While waiting for an Uber, we watched them deny multiple groups of POC while proceeding to let every non-POC inside, even some wearing muddy cloth sneakers. CLUBIN N STYLE I am definitely not the new kid on the block when it comes to Chicago Nightlife. I've been to my share of dance clubs over the years and the newly remodeled Underground is amazing. I recently saw an article that listed it in the "Top 10 for Nightclubs" and I figured it was about time I finish my review. This place is classy and it starts at the street level. The door guys are courteous and nice to the guests who are all trying to get in. Some people are on the list and if you are lucky enough to get on that list then you will be whisked in quickly. Hey this is a nightclub and there are only so many spots for the cool kids. I just kept telling myself that I'm cool and crossed my fingers. Once you make it past the front door you will be taken into the Underground. I use to come here before the remodel and I always thought it was a little small. The new renovations really opened up the club. It is really comfortable. I could hardly believe it was the same space I had been to years ago. I had expressed interest about the remodel and was given a personal tour of the new space. How cool or dorky am I? I go to one of the hottest nightclubs and I'm walking around like Bob Villa on a home improvement show. I was impressed with how excited the manager was to show off their new digs. I needed to get my cool back on so I decided to hit the bar. I kept it simple just a vodka, soda & lemon. The glasses were gorgeous and the drinks were mixed perfectly. There is nothing worse then a soda and lemon drink. The bartenders were fast and really nice. I'm feeling cooler by the minute or maybe it's the ice. I'm not sure but I'm not looking back. I noticed that there were two rooms and each had there own styles of music. One was the dance all night and give me a red bull kind of room. I really wasn't there to get my dance on but appreciated the great energy in there. I moved into the lounge area which seemed more Old-School and that fits me to a T. Imagine a totally cool area to sit back, drink, chill and have desert. I have no idea how I ended up ordering desert but the very nice waitress told me about the amazing ice cream sandwich they make and that it was her favorite. It was a hot night and all I could think was if its that good then I need to be the judge of this. I also was given a table because I had desert coming. I am totally cool. Some people get a table because they order "Bottle Service" and I get a table because I order "Desert Service"! Look at me now. I'm living the high life. I must say that the ice cream sandwich was delicious. How could this night get any better? Oh yeah another drink. I was about to get up and walk over to the bar when the waitress said, "No you sit down I'll grab you another drink!" I think I can get use to this life. I really loved how service orientated the club was. I was starting to feel like one of those celebrities that everyone sees here. Maybe someone has mistaken me for Matt Damon or Randy Travis. Yeah I have gotten both of those several times in various airports. Or maybe they just treat everyone here like a VIP. I will have to come back to test that theory and I can hardly wait. I also learned a cool tip from the waitress who was trying to keep me around past my bed time. She told me that at 1am they bring out hot fresh cookies for free to everyone in the club.
