This place gets more credit than it deserves. The whole concept of an underground club is cool but once you're really underground, there's nothing extremely special about it. The dance floor space is awkward and a bit uncomfortable with lounge tables strewn throughout the place. The crowd is usually comprised of older 20s and 30 year old working/business people...last time I went many were in suits. Just awful. I've been there once. But my review is more so about the bouncers and getting in. They will blatantly lie to your fave and say there's no more space or accepting table reservations only but you see some guy roll up with like 5 hot chicks and they all get in. Granted, the guy said me and my friend (girl) could get in but not my cousin (guy). Then there's this one aggressive bouncer who acts like he's a bouncer to the White House Wine mixer. This place is literally the biggest joke. Basically if you're not a tall hot blonde girl in a short dress you aren't getting in. My cousins and I literally waited in line for 40 minutes. The bouncers would ignore us, and if a tall white girl walked up she was immediately let in. My two cousins, both girls, asked to get in and for a second the rude and ignorant bouncers almost let them until they said they were with me and one of their boyfriends. He immediately shut us out. I believe his name was Nate. Whatever they were all rude. Over all, I would not think to come back here ever again and that's saying a lot considering I didn't even get past the doors. Rolled up with a large group - "there's a $3,000 minimum for your group to all get in." Respond "ok no thanks we'll go spend a bunch of money elsewhere." Doorman responds "no don't do that - guys are $20 women are free." Paid, get in, most of club is empty, every seat reserved and VIP. As everyone has already pointed out the worst part is the security walking around asking everyone to constantly move (like every 2-3 minutes). Terrible, terrible establishment. Nasty staff, and completely uninteresting space. Until it filled up it smelled like a bunch of urinal pucks too, so there's that. I heard a few people mention and recommend this club and how it may be difficult to get in! Went on a Saturday night l and although they weren't accepting anyone other than reservations with a group of 3 girls and 2 guys the bouncers let us in! If there was a huge long line we wouldn't have waited. The DJ that night was playing the best mixes from top 40, hip hop, trap, etc. definitely had a great time drinking and dancing. Security was also very nice. NBA players were in the house that night and it was super chill! The security walked us up to their area and it was a blast! People in general were friendly and just out to have a good time! Considering I got in almost instantly and had no problems I would recommend this place! It also helps that it was convenient and right next door to our hotel! Plus it was a nice way to experience Chicago nightlife! read more

Went here (or maybe I should say that we tried to) last night after the Roof at the Wit. I think it was after midnight. Nice that there was no specific line to wait in, just some ropes and a bunch of people hoping that their group satisfies the ratio requirement. And yes, the male to female ratio is a factor in getting in. You have more women than men with you and your chances of getting in sooner rather than later will increase. Unfortunately it does not matter if the women are ugly, high/drunk and annoying or look like hobbits or other short, small, odd magical folk. I think the magical folk argument applies to some of the men who are allowed in as well. I suppose if you bring the women you are good to go no matter how horrible your appearance is. But to be honest, some of these people resembled cartoon characters. It should be presumed that enforcement of a ratio in this manner would also be an enforcement of more attractive people getting in rather than hobbits but such a presumption is not applicable here. An underground employee named Kristy (who is in a losing battle with gravity) was forced to discipline one patron who kept insisting that her friends get in. It was thoroughly entertaining watching Kristy tell this pale girl who looked all wrong in her dress that she had no say as to who gets in. The girl counters with something to the effect of having two tables (or bottles, who knows) and Kristy continues to berate her as if the patron is a child. Definitely entertaining. Kristy also told Grant (a door guy with a clipboard) no more guys at one point... Another girl who is allowed past the ropes shoulder checked a girl that was not allowed in and then starts making fun of her. Again, very entertaining. And the people coming up to try and get their friends into the place was never ending. For waiting outside of a club I found it all thoroughly entertaining. I suppose it helps that I had a decent amount to drink before making it out to this place as well. After an hour we left without getting in - we knew we did not have the correct ratio to get in but some in our group insisted on trying regardless. Some people just don't listen... We are just going to buy a bottle next time and hope to avoid waiting too long. And yes, the ratio applies to table reservations as well... read more

it's a love/hate thing with UG - there have been times where i walk right in (depending on who i'm with or if i'm on the list) and times when i have sat out there for a while, while they ignore me. usually if i know i'm going there, i email the door guy to get on the list...and sometimes that works well. i have had great times here and then some so-so times - last week, i walked right in at 1am, no one was in line, and although it was pretty full downstairs, it wasn't like it use to be when it first opened. i like the spy/hideout theme...but when it's so dark, decor really doesn't matter. i met kanye and lupe at UG during lolla weekend and that was a definite highlight - and i heard that local DJs Flosstradamus are going to be their newest resident DJ for Saturday nights...so i'll def be back for some Floss' action! read more

Well, it's kind of hard to review this venue when I have yet to set foot inside. But in any case I tried rolling up to the spot with my wingman Mike a couple times in the summer of 2008 (awesome times let me tell ya, he got us kicked out of many a club that summer lol!). We'd always roll out after a cheap pre-game session at Mike's Streeterville condo facing the lake. The first time we tried entering The Underground, it was a bit late in the night, the line wasn't going anywhere (there were nothing but other frustrated sausages in the line), and we gave up quick. The 2nd time we attempted to go in, one of the bouncers was an African-American gentleman with dreadlocks. My friend Mike yelled out from a distance "YO RASTAMAN!!!", and needless to say, we were denied admission for the night. But something tells me we weren't going to get in anyway. At least Mike made our denial a little bit entertaining. And what's this Mike character up to these days you might ask? Well, he now lives away from the bright lights & BS of the city and lives a Tarzan-like existence in Hawaii. I'm still in the Chicago area. I was able to go for a "media only" event last week. I had fun. There really isn't too much to say though.... It's a little reminiscent of NORAD from War Games, or kind of like CTU from 24 the show in that it has huge world maps on the walls the look like computer screens. The staff was nice, the bar was adequate. It's just not that big yet. Harry's was much larger, but they will be opening more space in the future. I went on a Thursday night, but I can see the weekend being pretty busy. I know some other friends that were on a list and went last week. Two other girls showed up that are never turned away if you know what I mean, and they weren't allowed in b/c they weren't on the list. So... needless to say, they're pretty strict right now. Very impressed with this place. I never trust Club ratings because the people who can't get in, write bad reviews. Personally I respect a club that keeps the garbage out. Let's just say the bouncers have rubbed me and every single one of my friends wrong in the past year we've lived in Chicago. Not a great business plan for success. Do not go here if u want to meet genuine people that aren't on ego trips, much better clubs that don't show preferential treatment constantly. Was told guest list only and reservations, which was fine but waited to say hi to a friend from out of town. I can't even imagine how horrifying the experience at Underground be for those who "don't know someone". They charge ridiculous amount of money to get in, and they choose who will or will not pay and how much that will be (this decision is solely made by the over-sized bouncer at the door, and our recent visit was $30 per person at 2:30am)- a little bit outrages for after hours. On the top of it the service is extremely rude and the place gets overcrowded. NEVER AGAIN! read more

Don't let previous reviews fool you. The renovated underground is a beautiful space with beautiful people. Yes it is tough to get in. That is part of the whole experience of going to a top Chicago hit spot. The staff is always super nice and accommodating (which is a big plus as the club scene can be so pretentious) and everyone is really really really ridiculously good looking. Bouncers are rude & disrespectful to woman. They have serious entitlement issues and should realize they are bouncers at a night club NOT guarding the president of the United States. On the other hand, the music is good and very classy crowd. It is also diverse. Drinks are pricey & it gets really crowded. Dress to impress is an under statement because there is so chance you are getting into this pretentious lounge if you are not good looking and well dressed. Never wanted to give even a full star for this place. The most messed up place in entire city. This is not the only club in Chicago. They asked us to send details of all people wanting entry and still did not guarantee the entrance. Wasted 30 minutes on the call and did not let me know the exact procedure to get in. It is better to stay at home and spend a night in rather than wasting hours negotiating with the manager. The manager demanded $150 per head for a guaranteed entrance. Went for a friend's bachelorette party last night. We got there at 10pm, first ones there for the night. We also had a table with bottle service. The drinks were great, not too weak, not too strong...the service girls definitely made sure our glasses stayed full. Music was pretty good too. I've read the reviews here on Yelp from people of color as well as from someone I personally know in regards to either being turned away at the door or treated unfairly in the club...so as a black girl myself (and the only black girl in my group), I was nervous about what may or may not happen during night. I had absolutely no problem getting in the door, and the bouncers inside the club were super nice and respectable. I had an amazing time there. Even when the table service time was up for my group and we were asked to move for the next party to come in, we were not yelled at or push aside by any means. Now this isn't to say that there aren't any bad apples in the bunch, nor am I trying to discredit the stories of those who unfortunately had bad experiences, because I have had these types of things happen to me at other establishments. All I can say is the Underground is not all bad, and for those who may want to check it out, please don't be afraid to do so (as with everything else in life). read more

This club has been known to attract all sorts of Chicago sports figures from D. Rose to Patrick Kane. Which is great for Underground but bad for the guests wanting to enter on any night that professional athletes decide to party there, have heard many stories of being denied entry. Used to love this place and would go Fri/Sat or both. Lets just say they got a lot of my hard earned money. Planned my late night b day there. Knew a friend that was a "host" through another friend and he made quite a few promises that he didn't. He told us (2 girls) that if we brought 8-10 girls we would get a complimentary bottle and a table all night. Of course we agreed on one condition- please let some of my guy friends in as well. I didn't think this would be a difficult request seeing as most people want to be with all their friends on their b day. We arrived at the bar and the "host" who made all the promises didn't pull through. Us girls showed up decked out and ready to party and no table and no celebratory champagne. We confronted the "host" and asked what was up and he said he had no idea what we were talking about (PS he called my friend on her cell phone to ask her if we wanted this) He then left to do whatever hosts do at UG and came back and said he would get us shots.. Ya we never saw those either. I feel bad for any dude that has ever paid 20 bucks to get in or was given a hard time to get into this place. I also feel bad for all of those people who plan to have a fun b day gathering at this place and it ends up to be 20 girls because they wont let your guy friends in. Most Disappointing Experience Ever! Honestly, a professional establishment should pride itself on consistency and class however, this place grossly lacks on both. It reeks of incompetence with untrained door handlers, so called promoters. Martin, the kid by the entrance has no sense of who to let in and not. Ignore the BS reviews below, you can dress nice all you want, and get there as early as you want; as long as you are not a "friend" or an associate of the dude by the entrance or the one watching through the cameras, you are completely ignored and told to buy a table as a gentleman when the inside is completely empty. Not only that, the décor inside is cheaply made and drinks are overpriced. I visited this establishment when I was in Chicago for a work conference and it was sad to see so many professionals who wanted to have a good time and dressed appropriately turned back over arbitrary rules. While other kids with ball caps and t-shirts were allowed through. This is the epitome of the ultimate dog and pony show and it needs to go out of business fast.
