This is a post-purchase review. I went into the store a few months ago to find some hiking shoes in my extraordinary wonen's size--11.5 AA. I didn't know what set apart hiking shoes apart from my running New Balance, and neither did the shoe salesmen at Nordstrom's. So the helpful gal at The Treadmill made it her mission to fit me. She sent me home with a pair to wear around the house. They did work, and I went back the next day to tell her. She pointed out that New Balance's pointy toe was wrong for my foot. Who knew? I thought if I bought a well known & respected brand, they coudn't possibly be wrong for my foot. She's the expert. The shoes she selected for me was an unusual brand I hadn't heard of. Something like an Australian guy who opened his business in London, or vice versa. Anyway, I still was unsure they'd work, but having walked 5 miles per day for a few months, they work! And the biggest test--I took them on vacation last week to NYC. Walked all day, every day, and the only day my fleet gave me any trouble was when I wore sandals instead of these miracle shoes. All three travel companions, who also wore athletic shoes each day, cut our days shorter than I wanted to, and they all whined about their feet. Not me--I had plenty of mileage left in my feet each evening. It was those athletic shoes! I now realize the shoes are a marvel and a miracle. I've never been on vacation and did not have sore feet at the end of each day. I am so sold on this store, I'm bringing my husband back to see if she has a solution for his sore feet (bunions!) and I'm going to buy a back-up pair of my miracle shoes. Just in case. Consumer's Report magazine suggested that serious runners should go into a mom&pop store to get the specialized attention of an expert. That's exactly what I got and I am now a Treadmill loyal customer for life. read more

AMAZING! Kim and Kimberly were both two of the most helpful, friendly, down to earth, honest people I have ever met in retail sales. I just purchased some of the cutest and most comfortable clothing and shoes for a trip to Europe. Kimberly was even honest with me about a pair of pants that were not right for me in the sweetest of ways and I appreciate that soooo much. It's rare to find customer service like this, especially these days. If Treadmill has something I need or can order it for me, I have vowed to not purchase these things online. My husband heard great reviews about this place, so while we were in the area we decided to check it out. We walked it, and were immediately welcomed - despite it being 5 minutes before closing time! I bought a pair of capris and a sports bra, and despite it being so close to closing they were very helpful and encouraged me to take my time. They still give 20% off for military as well. Staff is super helpful. I couldn't remember which shoe I'd bought the time before and The Treadmill staff quickly looked it up on the computer. Staff pulled out that shoe but also offered a wide variety of alternatives. After trying them all out, I actually ended up buying a cheaper shoe that fit better. Also, great military discount. Happy customer since 2012. The sales staff really make you feel like friends, and they remarkably remember their customers shoe brands & styles. The shoe sales team are real runners themselves and have had marathon and/or trail running experience. Instead of carrying several shoe model from 2 or 3 specific brand lines, they carry a few models from a large variety of shoe brands focusing on the diversity of foot sizes, structures, and problematic areas, as well as minimal vs maximal support. The owners also put on running clinics, group runs, and support local running community events. As an Ironman triathlete & Ultra trail runner, my shoe needs vary. If you don't take care of your feet, you can't run, race, nor walk well. read more

I love coming to the treadmill for expert shoe advice from real runners. They are super active in their community by hosting group runs and group rides on the weekends and they even have a Tri Club! Often times they have a shoe company providing demo shoes at their group runs so you can really test a shoe before buying it! read more

There was a pair of Mizuno WaveRiders I wanted to try on. 3 customers were being helped by exactly 3 employees; I waited as long as I could, but had to leave. I was disappointed I didn't get to try them on as Mizuno's can be hard to find. read more

Worst customer service I've ever experienced. The salesman never acknowledged me until I had to say something and another customer who noticed it also said something. He didn't want to help me until the other customer was done (she went out and tested the shoes for about five minutes) . He just sat there waiting for her while I sat patiently waiting. There inventory is very limited. I guess it's expected from someone who probably makes minimum wage. read more

I have a very complex foot. Too wide at the front, to narrow in the heel, one leg longer than the other and fallen arches. So I have always thought that uncomfortable runnning was my lot in life. I recently was on holiday in Carmel and went to the Treadmill to get a new pair of shoes. There I realized a few things; 1) Good customer service still exists 2) I know nothing about what I really need in a shoe. 3) I am not a lost cause! The man I worked with was super knowledgeable. he kept checking and re-checking my foot, how I stand, how I run. In the end, I found a pair that held my foot in place! A miracle! Shortly after I ran a race in them and had no blistering - a first. I am thrilled with the service I got and my new shoes. I should also mention that I got great Nike running pants there that make me look way thinner than I am - a plus! read more

For anyone who is seeking above and beyond customer service, excellent product and stocking, and a full user experience, you need to go check out The Treadmill. My friend and I are both active duty Army who are in the area for an assignment and being heavy into fitness we were looking for a place that had a good supply of equipment, specifically for this visit, a crossfit style workout/weightlifting shoe. We had been to all of the big box stores in the area, including a privately owned running shoe store and had no lucky finding the shoe i was looking for. Of course i didn't expect to find the shoe in those locations primarily but i received standard service in all of the locations like foot locker and the nike store. We asked around and were given the name "The Treadmill". We through it into google and found the store in a really nice location near carmel valley. When we entered the store we were immediately greeted warmly and openly, asking what we needed and pointing us in the direction of the shoes i had asked about, which to our surprise, they had. What i loved is that the employee, Michelle, immediately stopped what she was doing to direct me and make sure i felt welcome. This is where it gets great, Michelle, not being occupied with any other customer at the time, went and got the shoe that i had requested and sat down in front of me, untied my shoe and began prepping the new shoe for me to put it on. She held the shoe out and put the shoe on my foot for me, testing to see if it fit properly. It did, and she laced it up for me. All the time remaining so nice and completely aware of customer service, no fake feeling at all. She then told me that ALL ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY RECEIVES 20% OFF OF EVERYTHING, ANYTIME, unless the product is already marked down. however, as military, this is incredible, and very much appreciated. I got a few other things while in the store, and was just completely impressed with the continuous attention to detail to customer specific questions and product inquiries. I absolutely recommend this store to ANYONE, especially military members in the area looking for high quality product for fitness, running specifically, or general apparel, brands like UnderArmor, nike, rebok, and patagonia. loved it overall, won't go anywhere else after this experience. read more

For athletes there's running and swim gear, exercise and hiking equipment, an abundance of the latest shoes and just about anything available on Amazon. For the not yet athlete, there are the most stylish, colorful clothing, comfortable shoes, and do jiggers. When not working out on the trails with his customers and team mates, Chris is always at the store figuring our what's the best products for you and me. And his staff rates 5 stars too. The staff at The Treadmill will analyze your step relative to your needs and customize your footwear selection to support both. I was having problems with my ankle--it was starting to swell when I took longer walks due to an injury I had decades ago. Kim analyzed my step (had me walk back and forth multiple times) and selected a shoe for me. Bingo! I've had no ankle problems since. None. We bought $100 running shoes for our daughter; she wore them one time, they were too small. When we tried to return them sunday july 5, 2009 they said 'no returns'. I asked if we could instead get a discount on new ones(our daughter needed shoes!), they said no to that too. You are way better off buying online or at a store that has a better return policy. read more

Great store. These people know feet better than most podiatrists, and they work with many locals. They will analyze your feet, go over what's best for you, and are hands-down, some of the best service I've seen. BTW, I just read the two star review from "Diane" who wrote a review littered with "awesome service" and "so nice" and then apparently got into a snit because she didn't get a bag? You have to pay for bags in this area. Entitled much? Pretty tacky to give this superb small business a nasty mark from such a small issue. I was very impressed by my experience at Treadmill buying new shoes today. Michael, the associate who helped me, started out by looking at my feet both standing and sitting. He then asked questions about what I needed my shoes to be able to do. He then bought out different brands and styles that were appropriate for my feet. I tried each on and was even encouraged to walk outside if I wanted. The pair I ended up with felt like they were made for my feet. Since I bought a pair of Newtons, I even have 30 days to return them if I change my mind. I will definitely be returning to this store and recommending them as well. read more

Every year, the Treadmill does this very cool thing where they put a coupon for a free pair of socks in the registration bag of all the Big Sur marathon event participants, good through race weekend. It's one of those win-win deals b/c it brings people to their store to redeem them and people like free stuff (or at least I do). Granted, the socks are "irregular" for one reason or another, but honestly, I have never found them to be anything but very comfy and a wonderful addition to my workout socks. With such good sock karma, I've really wanted to support Treadmill, but unfortunately their prices are in line with other stores in the Crossroads shopping center: tourist town high. There's some great brands and occasionally a sales rack with some borderline-reasonably priced items, but have never found anything in a small size and too many high price tags to scour through looking for a hidden treasure. Still, I thank Treadmill for their socks, irregular and all, and I'll be back, if nothing else for my irregular regular freebie. read more

Fantastic customer service. I normally just buy my running shoes at whatever place I happen to be in, I never specifically shop in a running store. I had heard how good Treadmill was, but I finally found out recently it's all true. They are amazing, they took perhaps 30 min just to personally help me pick the shoes, try them on, let me jog around, analyzed my gait, discussed my running patters, etc. It was awesome. and they have a military discount. Very inconsiderate people. I called ahead to this store looking for a very particular shoe. They did not have have them in stock, but took my name and number down with the promise to call when their next shipment came in. When they called, I said I would be in the next day. The Treadmill is a great store! The staff was very professional and friendly. I was traveling on business and had a weekend in the Carmel area, with nothing in my suitcase but business clothes. I needed to be fully equipped to hit the great trails. Michelle was very helpful and professional. I was eager to get out and moving and really liked the first shoes she recommended. I wanted to buy them immediately. But she insisted on the perfect fit for my foot shape and shape changes that would occur during running. We tried on a few more styles and each felt better, and finally the last pair was the best fit. They were a size larger than I would normally wear but ended up being the way to go. Within an hour I was out running Point Lobos and my feet couldn't have been happier. Later, I ran some more verticle and mixed terrain on trails further south, and I think the larger shoe size probably saved my toes, especially on the steep descents. Thanks Michelle for pointing out the sales rack also - the shorts and fleece top were perfect for the cool spring air. Finally, the tips on "local" parking saved me a few bucks at the trail and the Canery Row Brew house you recommended for dinner was great. I burgers with brie on them were especially tasty! Every time I go to Treadmill I am greeted right away and the staff has always been helpful. Until I found the right style of running shoe for my feet, the staff didn't mind letting me try on several different pairs of shoes. They even encouraged me to run around the shopping center to really test the shoes out. A couple of times they even let me return shoes because I wasn't completely happy with them. I also really like the great quality clothes they have, which are for different activities, not just running. When I went on a trip to the Rocky Mountains this past summer, a friend recommended that I get a drink powder to prevent altitude sickness, the only place to get it within a 60 mile radius was The Treadmill! Most importantly it is nice to see the shop involved in many community activities! read more
