My husband is a runner, and I am definitely not a runner (my Apple Watch sets my daily move goal to 150 calories...LOL). Since he always has to stop at any running store he sees, we ended up at The Treadmill today; where we were helped by a slender brunette lady who gave us SO MUCH helpful advice. Wish I got her name. I wear tennis shoes to work every day (and very minimal walking) and was thinking about trying a pair of on shoes. I asked for assistance with two pairs, and the lady gave me a heads up that one of the pairs I selected was only meant for very leisurely walking. I tried both pairs on, she had me stand to check the fit of the shoes, she analyzed the wear patterns on my existing shoes, AND she gave me tips on how to tie my shoes. I was honestly blown away by how helpful she was and am so excited for my new shoes! She also gave my husband tips on approaching his first marathon (he's currently training) and running trails/routes near us (we live in the San Jose/Santa Clara/Sunnyvale area). AND when she saw us grabbing socks, she recommended we check out the sale section first "unless you're partial to the colors you chose" (which he was). Husband said she was really helpful w her running advice. And as a non-runner, I appreciate her taking the time to explain how a shoe should fit, how to tie my laces, etc to someone like me. I didn't realize how cold it was in Carmel and being on a vacation with mostly summer attire, I needed to find some pants to wear so that we could walk on the beach. I stopped in to The Treadmill to see if I could find some yoga pants. It was pretty early in the morning so I was the only customer in the store. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a guy who pointed me in the right direction for pants. As I was browsing, he also mentioned that they had some yoga pants on sale that might work and brought me a pair. The sale ones were either too long or too tight, so I ended up purchasing a regular priced pair of pants (in a petite size, no hemming necessary!). My husband also went in to look at shoes, but didn't see anything quickly that was on sale so he didn't purchase anything. The staff was very friendly and helpful though, so I'd recommend if you're in the area and are in need of some athletic gear. read more

I used to love this place. My family and I have shopped here for years. However, I just had the most unpleasant experience that's going to make me drive out to REI for any outdoor gear. My mom bought me underwear for Christmas. This is really, really expensive underwear that's billed as "indestructible" by The Treadmill staff. I wore and washed it once and one of the pairs ripped after the first wash. Indestructible underwear? When I asked if I could return or exchange it, a very unpleasant older women with short grey hair snapped at me that this was my fault and there's no way I can return it. It's my problem not theirs that the $35/pair underwear that's washer safe ripped after one wash. They were completely unwilling to come to any resolution. Sorry, but you just lost a family's business to REI where prices are cheaper, gear is better, staff is more knowledgeable, and return policy's aren't ridiculous. read more

Typical boutique running store, with top tier products. Don't come here if you're looking for Nike, Adidas, or other generic brands. Customer service is exceptional. They analyze your foot type, stride, and match you with the best fitting shoe, not just for comfort, but for arch type, form correction, etc. Prices aren't that bad, about $100-$120. Won't be going to sports authority for athletic shoes anymore that's for sure. read more

I went to the Treadmill to pick up a new pair of Merrill boots. The woman who helped me was exceptional! I should have asked her name (thin, darker complexion with wavy black hair) but forgot to do so. When I asked for her assistance and gave her my size she glanced at my current shoes and correctly suggested I try a "wide" size. Happily, she laced up the new boots and fitted them to my feet. She showed me a trick with the laces that runners use to get a snug tight fit. Wow, what a difference! I was prepared to pay more for the hiking boots, because you know it is Carmel retail. I was pleasantly surprised with the price point. Easily the best customer service I have experienced in recent memory. Thank you very much. read more

I am pretty new to shopping at this location and I recently had to shop for someone else who could not go in for sizing, etc... while I was on the phone with them... Kimberly was already pulling items.. in less than 15 minutes she had 2 outfits, and shoes ready to go... they ended up fitting the person Perfectly!!! Even though I had only personally shopped at this store a couple of times prior - they treated me like an old friend who had been shopping there for years! I can't Thank them enough. I myself have recently purchased some leggings from them.... they were a little over my Normal budget.... After doing a little research online and figuring out that I wanted the Merrell Circuit MJ Breeze in Black instead of the Vibram Five Fingers Performa Jane I walked into Treadmill for the second time last month. My first visit a young laid back lady who was a seasonal worker and she seemed very knowledgeable with the products and answered every question I had especially about the strange Vibram Five Fingers that I was inquiring about. I went back a week later and had to ask for assistance to buy the shoes that I wanted. The gentleman told me to try them on even though I knew I was going to buy them which was fine but was not really there during my visit, meaning he wasn't there to give me one on one assistance from the beginning until the end. He was drifting with his eyes, ears and didn't look at me directly once. I felt like I wasn't a local and that I was just a tourist swinging by for a one and only buy. Strange as I've heard great things about this place and my friends frequent pretty often. Bummer. I guess I will just buy shoes online like I was before. read more

Both my wife and I have bought shoes from this store. Each time for walking shoes. The staff is excellent in helping us chose shoes which work for our needs and problems. I was hurting my feet walking and my shoes were cheap ones. By upgrading to better shoes that support my feet, I no longer have those problems. My wife walks about four miles a day in addition to personal walking in the early mornings. She was hurting her feet also. She has bought three pair of shoes from them in the last six months for various needs and is happier and has reduced the pain she was having. The people here work with you until you are satisfied. Purchased packs, socks, shoes, Patagonia jackets from them in the past. The Younger girl greeted me at the door but the old bitter Gnome‍ lady with that Type-A personality there didn't say one word to me. Probably manager/owner?? In the past have seen Patagonia roller luggage, Duffel/backpacks there. I asked if they have any and she made it sound like they have never carried the product before. I clarified and said "actually I have seen them here before, in your store front window display and inside the store below your clothing racks." She then followed up with "oh-Ya..well they have not sold well in the past so we may not carry them again". The girl behind her was awesome trying to speak-but the Gnome‍ spoke over her. Younger staff needed. You will most/same products at REI. Go to the Treadmill and try on-then purchase online. Dude that's there that wears glasses, shorts, long sleeve athletic sweater is awesome!! I have just gotten back into running after a two year break. I made the mistake of pulling out my old running shoes to train for a half marathon. In the past month, I haven't been able to run without pain in my right arch, ankle and shin. I walked into The Treadmill and was helped right away. The woman who helped me looked at my feet while I was standing and also watched me walk and run before explaining to me what kind of shoes I need for my foot shape and running style. I tried on 3 pairs, and one pair was clearly the right shoe for me. The saleswoman took me outside and watched me run in them to make sure they worked. She also taught me a more secure way to tie my shoes and showed me some proper running socks that are much better than the cheap cotton socks I usually wear. Yesterday, I took my new sneakers out for a 4 mile run along Carmel beach and did not experience any pain or discomfort even though I ran on the road, sidewalk, and a dirt path. I didn't even notice my shoes! If you are a serious runner or are experiencing any pain or suffering from injuries, the Treadmill will offer expertise and individual attention you can't get at a big discount store. read more

The Treadmill is an awesome running store & the staff are exceptional! The Treadmill always stocks the latest in running gear and is known as the best running store on the Peninsula. The staff are very knowledgeable and provide recommendations based on your individual needs. The Merino running sweaters I have purchased from The Treadmill are exceptional and look as good as the first day I purchased them many years ago. My husband also loves the Boco running shoes he recently purchased from their store. There is a fun run and hike organized by The Treadmill each Saturday which is a great way to meet other people if you are new to the area or in need of motivation to get back into running. This place has a great selection of apparel. Oiselle, Prana, Patagonia, The North Face. I loved the brands! These are pricier brands and even the sale/clearance stuff was kind of pricey, but I think that's how it is in Carmel. The shoe selection was not huge, but decent. Also a good selection of running/hiking accessories. The lady who helped us was super-cool and helpful. I liked her a lot. My favorite store on the peninsula, hands down! I have been coming here for years to pick up gu, honeystinger cookies, and gear. I also have LOVED their free community events, group runs, classes, workshops, etc. Recently, I wanted to try on a different sort of running shoe than I usually get. Michael, the genius that he is, taught me that I needed to buy my shoes in narrow sizes and I've been buying them in the wrong size! This will definitely change things for me for the better and help reduce my chances of injury in the future now that I will buy shoes in the right size! I'm not on Yelp very often, and I'll be honest.... I'm only motivated to go on here if I have had a very good... or very bad experience. Unfortunately for this little "running" store, this is not a very good experience. I had never been in the store, and I had never heard anything about it, but I needed some running socks on my vacation to Big Sur. I was excited to find a running store on my way down the coast. Boy was I in for a surprise. I think I met one of the owners named Deborah. She was abrasive, rude, and insulting. She cared way more about the fact that her precious store had been there for 27 years, then helping me find what I was looking for. I suggest you don't visit this store anytime soon. read more

A great store that focuses on the runner/hiker/walker in your life. They have friendly people to help you out and most of the salesmen are runners who can recommend the right shoe for you based on your needs. They carry quite a few brands, but I went there because they have the Montrail Continental Divide trail running shoe. Unfortunately, the shoe ran small, so they had to order a half size larger. I waited a week and received a call when they came in, but the 12.5's were also a little small. Here is where the knowledge of their staff came in. I thought the shoes felt comfortable enough and that even if they did end up being a little snug, I figured they would stretch out as I broke them in....like I've done with so many other pairs of shoes in the past. However, the salesman told me that trail running shoes should have a little extra room in the toe since the rough off-road terrain will make a big difference after a couple miles. They still let me take the shoes home for the night to wear around the house. After wearing them for several hours, I was convinced that I should go up another half size. I went back, ordered a size 13 (which I assumed would be huge since I normally wear a 12) and waited. They came about 4 days later and the fit was amazing. So my overall experience with the store was great. Plus, they give a 20% discount to military!! They also have a lot of outdoor apparel from Arc'Teryx, Patagonia, The North Face, and a couple of other high end brands. A lot of good running clothes for inclimate weather. The ONLY negative thing is that there is no refund policy, only store credit. I would highly recommend this store though! Update Oct 10, 2007: The rubber tread on the Montrail shoes I bought started to peel off the shoe after about a month and a half of use. I took them back to the store and showed them to a manager. I didn't have a receipt or anything, but I was in their database so they knew I bought the shoes from their store. They came out with a brand new pair, no questions asked, and exchanged them. This kind of great service will keep me shopping at this friendly store. read more

I visited the Treadmill store for the first time last week on my birthday! I did not know what to expect. I had in mind to try out something new for running shoes. I searched online and found that the store offered the Newton running shoes. I came to the store and Kimberley did such a wonderful work explaining the shoes and getting the right fit for me. Unfortunately they did not have the size of shoe that I fell in love with but Kimberley did such a great job by ordering them for me and 6 days later she calls and leaves a VM saying that the shoes arrived and would like me to come and see them. I went yesterday (Saturday) hoping to talk to her because she did such a great job on my first visit. She was busy with other customers. I came to the desk and asked for the shoes. The store was somewhat busy, so the man at the desk said I could try them outside which I did not see inconvenient to do so. I fell in love with the fit of the Newton Motion III! I bought them! I have to say that I was disappointed with the service of the man at the cash register. I had just purchased shoes for $174.99 plus taxes! When he completed my transaction he moved on to the next customer making me feel a bit uncomfortable. He did not even put my new bought shoes in a bag!!! Is like he did not care. I had to ask him for a bag for my new purchased shoes!!! Like really? How disappointing! Overall my experience at the first visit to the store was awesome! But my last visit not so good, poor customer service at the last visit! Cannot believe it! read more

I've only encountered friendly service at this place. At first they aren't necessarily attentive, but more because I think they want customers to browse without having salespeople in your face as you walk in the door. It was pretty busy for a Saturday morning so I perused the sales section before approaching one of the people for help. She was helping another customer so she pointed me to her colleague. I needed socks for my running shoes and walked out with two great pairs. I have to admit I love the 20% military discount and it is so significant that it's worth patronizing this place. I have never had a bad experience at a specialized running store, but certainly this was the best by far. Sophie was amazing. Truly amazing. I have been using the same brand/make/model (as they have evolved, of course) and for some reason, the last generation of that shoe did not do so well for me. As a matter of fact, I ended up getting injured (I am not blaming the shoe on its entirety, but partly). I experimented with a couple of running shoes, mostly for shorter runs, but now that I am running seriously and training for a marathon, I needed a good shoe that could withstand the increase in mileage. I explained my concerns to Sophie and she took the time to carefully choose a couple of pairs she thought would do well for me. We chose a shoe that I normally would not even considered. This is a post-purchase review. I went into the store a few months ago to find some hiking shoes in my extraordinary wonen's size--11.5 AA. I didn't know what set apart hiking shoes apart from my running New Balance, and neither did the shoe salesmen at Nordstrom's. So the helpful gal at The Treadmill made it her mission to fit me. She sent me home with a pair to wear around the house. They did work, and I went back the next day to tell her. She pointed out that New Balance's pointy toe was wrong for my foot. Who knew? I thought if I bought a well known & respected brand, they coudn't possibly be wrong for my foot. She's the expert. The shoes she selected for me was an unusual brand I hadn't heard of. Something like an Australian guy who opened his business in London, or vice versa. Anyway, I still was unsure they'd work, but having walked 5 miles per day for a few months, they work! And the biggest test--I took them on vacation last week to NYC. Walked all day, every day, and the only day my fleet gave me any trouble was when I wore sandals instead of these miracle shoes. All three travel companions, who also wore athletic shoes each day, cut our days shorter than I wanted to, and they all whined about their feet. Not me--I had plenty of mileage left in my feet each evening. It was those athletic shoes! I now realize the shoes are a marvel and a miracle. I've never been on vacation and did not have sore feet at the end of each day. I am so sold on this store, I'm bringing my husband back to see if she has a solution for his sore feet (bunions!) and I'm going to buy a back-up pair of my miracle shoes. Just in case. Consumer's Report magazine suggested that serious runners should go into a mom&pop store to get the specialized attention of an expert.
