My family and I were visiting Marin to do some fun Halloween/pumpkin pictures last Saturday. On our way back, we wanted to pick up a carbon steel pan, some sauces, and clothes for our camping trip. Some of the staff were kind, some were awkward, but there were two specific ones that completely rubbed me the wrong way. When I found the pan I wanted to purchase, I placed it under our baby stroller, with the handle still sticking out, clearly showing I intend to purchase it. As I was headed towards the cashier line, there was an employee almost eyeing me and walking behind me as if I was going to steal the pan. Made me feel uncomfortable, and I felt inappropriately profiled. The next distasteful reaction was the cashier. He looked at me with a lot of aggression, and malice. Again, it was uncomfortable. I was under the impression that Marin was suppose to be safer and welcoming. I felt the total opposite. The REIs I usually go to "redwood city, Fremont, Sac" all very and extremely friendly. Maybe this store can learn a thing or two from them. read more

Stopped in here and checked out around 10 min to closing with 1 full price jacket and two discounted items and had the most bizarre, hostile experience checking out with Kevin. I mentioned I had thought the two discounted items may have been 50% off and wanted to check because I might not get them, and was told everything is as listed and things could have been up to 50%. I said okay fine I'll go ahead and get the items, but his behavior was so dismissive after that to the point where I even apologized for potentially coming off as rude. I've worked customer service jobs and feel bad for coming in late, but he didn't even respond to this and just dropped my items in front of me when I paid. I was wondering if it was just me who had a weird experience so I went on Yelp, where I see mainly POC saying they've had less a than amazing time here. I'm half Hispanic, so take that as you will! Wish I didn't come before closing cause I certainly would've immediately returned my (expensive) purchase. read more

REI continues to be top notch when it comes to customer service. I got a flat on my bike while I was on the road and I needed it fixed right away. I know bike shops are always backlogged with service requests, so I feared it would take days and I would be stranded and have to take an Uber home. Nope. Amazing and wonderful Ben dropped what he was doing and fixed my flat with a smile. I was in and out in minutes. His courtesy, knowledge and willingness to help was clearly apparent. He saved the day. He made a very bad situation into a pleasant experience for me. I'm grateful REI supports that kind of costumer service, and quite honestly, it's what I've come to expect from REI. Very friendly staff, it is much smaller than the other REI in Minneapolis. I'm used to easy access from the highway and ample parking. There are other stores next by which makes shopping in this area fun. They have basic selection of bicycles and their shoe collection is not as huge as the ones in Minneapolis. It has you covered for your basic camping. read more

The service at REI was great. In an age of automation, customer service often lacks warmth. The manager of REI Marina chatted with me about the items I was buying along with the hooded puffy jacket blanket. When he realized I was buying for a homeless woman I encountered in the ER that day, he immediately identified with my experience and quickly pulled a large bag of handwarmers to gift me to give her and others I help. I definitely needed some human kindness that day and was touched that it would be a random stranger managing our REI. read more

Came by since the Tesla chargers were in their parking lot and had time to spare. I was able to find myself an item that was $100 and went to the register to pay for it. The guy at the register name Kevin helped us and asked us about the REI membership. He did his spill and we didn't want to interrupt him while he was still doing so, we waited for him to be done. We told him we weren't interested. Not the friendliest person, clearly us saying no or the color of our skin made him feel that it was okay to give us the stink eye and gave us our receipt and pushed my item to me rather than hand it over to me. Was it rude? Yes. I thought it was just me but I walked out with my husband and asked him how that conversation went and clearly he felt the same. Did I walk back in? Yes. Did I return it? Yes. Can I spend my hard earned money elsewhere? Most definitely. read more

My coworker suggested I look here for a wide brimmed hat-I have only been here twice, today being the second time. They have an amazing selection of outdoor gear; socks for days! I found my hat and up to the register. The gal who rung me up was nice, apparently the pin pad doesn't work correctly. I inserted my card twice, it said error, I swiped it and it said insert it... I'm a little annoyed then she tells me "oh you have to do it 3 times and then you can swipe it, it's not working right today." Ok, how about A. Fix the pin pad B. Use a different register (they have at least 4 I saw) C. Tell the customer the pin pad is malfunctioning? For what the stuff costs here they can afford a new pin pad. read more

This store took many Covid precautions, such as a limited amount of customers allowed in the shoe try on area; this and their employees' attentiveness to social distancing made me feel very safe. Marc in particular was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and helped me so much! I was looking for my first pair of hiking boots and I was able to tell Marc that I had no idea what I needed and they were able to help me find the perfect pair. Marc not only took the time to listen to my needs and recommend boots based on them, but they also explained what features would benefit me and why. My husband and I entered REI, with the intention of asking a LOT of questions about Tepui tents, not necessarily purchasing one right away. However; the folks inside were were extremely friendly helpful and directed us to Nicholas who spent about 1.5 hours with us! He answered all of our questions and if he didn't have the answer off the top of his head, he asked another associate or researched to find us the answer. Absolutely outstanding customer service! They not only had one but went out of their way to help with everything from logistics to physical attachment. I remember this brick building looming up in front of us on a beat-up block with pretty much nothing else around it. My then boyfriend was a camping and climbing enthusiast, and wanted to join this thing called Recreational Equipment, Inc. I tagged along, leaving my VW Minivan on the iffy city street of Washington, DC. The brick building turned out to be a big warehouse, with camping and sports goods casually displayed on top of the boxes they came in, looking like any true warehouse store you've ever been to. But the goods were top of the line, and at that time, only available by catalogue. We regarded the treasure trove on offer, and selected light weight back packs, foam to sleep on, featherweight sleeping bags, and dehydrated food for our "2-lb" packing trip, where our entire pack could not weigh more than two pounds. A collapsible cook stove and pans filled out our gear. My very first pair of Vibram-soled hiking and climbing boots with steel shanks came from this store, and lasted a good 20 years, including trekking all over Europe. More than the shopping experience, I joined my first co-op, and have sought out REI for camping and sports equipment ever since. The entire family joined the Arcadia store near LA, and has enjoyed the discounts and emails for that shop. There is also a great store on the Rockville Pike, in Rockville, Maryland, where I found my steel belted messenger bag to hold my passport, and camping gear that could double as travel goods. (Tiny bottles for shampoo, and a heat infuser for coffee). The Marina store called my name. It did so in emails, enticing me to travel up to the new shopping area near Monterey State College, one of the newest in the CA state system. The store is new and spacious, and laid out in the same way as the Arcadia store. It is in a new shopping mall in Marina, CA, and there is plenty of parking. The store is often busy, and as other Yelpers have noted, there frequently are no staff members to help customers, and the check out staff is too cool to pitch in. The one advantage of this is that it gives you plenty of time to browse, and compare prices with the different brands of gear. Since we are on email, we usually come in for the sales and for gifts. We found a great KUHL jacket for my husband on sale, and came in to inspect it. Sold on the jacket itself, we ultimately had to order on line since they did not have his size. I found a great cycling jacket on sale since I had time to poke around in the back of the store. There is a great variety here, and you can pre-shop online to home in on what you want. I do wish they had a couple more chairs to sit on, since we tend to wander around and try on many items. read more

This was finally my first time inside an REI store. The selection is great for outdoor adventures. Some stores may vary on what they carry. This one has cycling department, camping, hiking, back packing for example. I was helped out by a gentleman named Steve, he was very helpful. Excellent customer service. The store itself was very clean, friendly customers, great selection of items inventory. I signed up to be a lifetime REI member ($20 one time fee) you get 10% off future purchasees. Looking forward to visiting other REI store located throughout California and other states. read more

I had no idea so many interesting and compact items were available for backpacking. And they had great items for bike riders like GPS finders, gopro, and incredible lights. Well... so far, I have yet to have a positive experience at this location. They either hold the wrong item or I encounter staff who don't appear to understand retail consists of interacting with the customer and being pleasant is kind of required. I recently called to see if they had a product in store in my size. The guy who answered the phone sounded impatient that he had to help me, as if he was in some hurry. Hmmm... customer service is kind of his job and if it's not, he shouldn't answer the phone. Period. WTHeck! I guess I will fend for myself and make a stop in store this weekend. Upper management, please instill the values of being personable, competent, and friendly aka customer service with your selected staff. It really does make all the difference. I get into a little "analysis paralysis" sometime. Having said that, I had been searching for the proper type of bike rack for a 55 pound ebike for quite a while. I thought that the one REI had would be more expensive than what I could get at Amazon or other online retailers. This wasn't true. The REI store is in easy driving distance of home or work. So I went, picked up a heavy and bulky Thule bike rack for weekend installation on my car. When I opened the box, I saw with some trepidation that it was a "return item" and there was no hardware for the rack to attach to the car. In fact, the plastic bag for small items was torn open and empty. Inconvenienced and irritated, I called the store, spoke to Jared, and he took care of all the details, including checking to see if they had the proper rack in stock for me. Turned out they did not, so he authorized an upgraded bike rack just to keep a customer. Because of this exemplary care and service, I pledge my undying loyalty to REI. Thank you Jared, Freddie and other staff that helped me today. It is clear Jared is very engaged in making this a banner REI store, and I will be back. read more

went in tonight with my boyfriend, we are people of color. We were looking at hiking boots for about 10 minutes, with intent to buy, and were in need of some help deciding what to get. A (white) man walks into the same section and is messing around with the "try it out" rock. Immediately, a worker (blond, older, tall, curly haired woman) comes out, hugs him, and starts having small talk with him, as if they're friends. Maybe he's a regular, i don't know. I look in her direction and make eye contact with her, she continues with the small talk. I say "excuse me?" She glances over, and continues with her small talk. Maybe you guys need sensitivity training, maybe she was belligerent, i really dont know. But if you're going to be colorist in Marina of all places, you won't have many locals coming into your store. We used to come here for our hiking needs. Now we'll go to seaside for that. read more

I made the mistake of going here yesterday customer service was not poor it was non existent. I was greeted outside the door by a nice young man that explained the CV procedures then I walked in. I was looking for a particular shirt that the manufacturer said REI carried. I searched all the shirt racks and could not find it, I saw three sales women who avoided me like the plague all three seemed to be stocking. I was never able to find a sales person to assist me so I left. The young man at the door gave me a cheery goodbye I told him I could not get anyone to assist me so I left. Not nearly as cool as the one in Denver where you can enjoy a little rock climbing during your visit but sweet store and amazing customer service. But it is hard to shop here when you are a bargain shopper and enjoy finding the same exact item online for less. I mean I get off on that s*%#. The beanie that I wanted was nearly $50 and the long johns were $70. I love that they carry Kuhl for both men and women (my gentleman friend is a huge fan) but I was surprised to see their lack of size selection with their Marmot and Patagonia women's line. Perhaps the holidays wiped them out of a lot of stuff and different sizes and another thing that I'm not a fan of (I see other sports stores do this too) is that they will keep the "black" jacket at full price and place the same jacket in other colors on sale. Obvi, black is more desired therefore has more demand but still... They have a solid selection of snacks to take with you on your sport expeditions near the cash registers which was impressive. They sell Go Pros (which rock and you can film yourself or others while doing some pretty extreme things, my friends ski while holding them). beautiful pricey beach cruisers and fatty skis. On the flipside we learned that their used ski equipment sale is out of this world and people nearly camp outside to get it for some good deals. Sounds exciting. Honestly I drove here from Santa Cruz after a really horrible experience at Patagonia. I was honestly pleasantly surprised how helpful multiple staff members were! Two different customer sales reps helped me find the jacket I needed for a big trip I have coming up. The most awesome part was that they didn't actually have the size I needed but proceeded to look everything up for me, and send me info so that I could instantly order the jacket online. This was all so helpful as I also had my 4yr old niece with me! Quick and helpful for sure! The people at the cash registers were a little stand offish but given that everyone else was so friendly I'm giving this location 5 stars and will be returning for sure! read more
