I don't ever really eat fudge or taffy at home, but I turn into a fudge and taffy monster when I make my way to Northern Michigan. I was excited for all the taffy at Mackinac Island, but definitely got my fill of taffy the day before here at The Taffy Barrel. It was such a fun activity for our 3 kids to fill buckets with every kind of taffy possible. Pickle taffy? Yes, it exists...and it's kind of good. They each got a bag and I couldn't resist a bag for myself, which I've been munching on for days ever since. I also got some taffy at the Kilwins in Petoskey and have to say The Taffy Barrel wins when it comes to the best taffy in the area. Pricing aside, this place is a favorite. 5 stars go to places I want to (or do) visit every time I'm in an area. And I don't want to miss Taffy Barrel when I am in Charlevoix. It's so fun to plop each piece of taffy into the cute baskets. I often grab 3-4 pieces of each flavor that sounds good. The only bad part is when they spread them on the scale and I hear the high number that will go on my charge card. That said I'm happy to support them and glad they've stayed in business. The owner lady told me that a lady makes all the approximate 90 different flavors for her. All I can say is that lady needs to start franchising some taffy shops! Yes it's that great. When you come in, you pick up wooden pail and pick out whichever candy selection you want. After filling your pail to the brim, you bring the pail to the cashier and she weighs it. A great thing about small, beachtowns is their local candy stores. The Taffy Barrel is a perfect one. They only sell taffy, and they do it well. There are hundreds of flavors to pick from, with new ones being created monthly. The taffy is also chewy but not sticky, so no worries about finding a piece in your teeth two days later. I do not like this store. There's just something about it. I went there once when it had just opened and was really disappointed. Everything is really overpriced and they charge by the half pound for candy that you can get much cheaper at Olsen's, Rexall, Glen's, The Dollar Tree... And you can get MUCH better quality taffy at Murdick's Famous Fudge for just about the same price. The only thing I liked about this place is they have some old fashioned gum that can be hard to find, plus they have some cute novelty candies. The atmosphere is kinda cute as well. *UPDATE* I've been to several other stores just like this one and they're all the same and charge the same price. This one does have a really good variety of Jelly Bellies, which are delicious. read more

Lots of old style, hard to find candies sold by the half pound but the real draw is the scores of flavours of taffy, both classic and oddball. You can find delicious egg nog that tastes like the real thing, oddly satisfying maple bacon and an oh so classic tasting myriad of fruit flavoured taffies. I was really thankful that they gave me a cheat sheet at check-out. My sister-in-law loves taffy, so we went in to grab her a few flavours when we saw the barrels in the window. I was shocked to see all the other barrels further in. It's sort of like the Taffy Answer to Jelly Belly jelly beans, which they have too by the way. I love Murdick's taffy as well, and the Taffy Barrel's carried taffy doesn't surpass them for handcrafted flavour, for one thing Murdick's is a totally different type of taffy, but they number of choices is amazing. Taffy Barrel's taste is great and has a chewier, less creamy mouthfeel then Murdick's taffy, again- different type of taffy. That doesn't make the Barrel's worse or better, just different. I, personally, got some of both. A big bag for the sister in law and some for me too. Also, a lot of the specialty, old fashioned candies that I haven't seen in ages. Oh, and it should be mentioned. I was in there for a half an hour and was asked at least four times if I needed help by several different people. Awesome staff makes it a great place to be too. A very old fashioned candy store that sells many varieties of Taffy. The taffy is Very fresh and soft. We have enjoyed eating what we purchased. We weren't actually going to purchase anything but just wanted to see what was inside the store. There was a guy at the door that invited us in and explained to us a little of the store and how to make a purchase. We felt very welcomed and appreciated the customer service. read more

This is a definite favorite for the kids whenever we're in town. I'm not a huge taffy fan, but they have a large variety of non-taffy candies as well. Almost all of the candy is sold by weight - just grab a basket and start filling. The selection is half the fun! This candy shop is definitely worth a visit. read more

Fun place! Very clean, cute, and well worth a visit. I love the big swinging barn doors when you first enter. We were greeted right away by two friendly workers who explained that the candy was all the same price ($4.45 per half lb.) so we could fill up our basket however we'd like. We ended up with a little over a pound of salt water taffy by going through the store picking out 1 or 2 pieces of each flavor. I would definitely return on my next visit! read more

We bought $16 worth of assorted taffy flavors. About half of the pieces that we managed to eat were very hard. All of the flavors were very bland and we had a hard time telling what most of the flavors were. And when they say "salt water" they aren't joking, it's the saltiest taffy I have ever had. I would say we threw out 90% of what we bought. I would highly suggest trying before you fill a bag full and end up disappointed. read more

They see it everyday!!) Meanwhile, the "taffy-walkers" lazily stroll amongst CVX flowered streets, stepping large and working that taffy gold.... The taffy from here is fantastic, however was very disappointed that their website directed me to send them a text for offers. I did and received an offer for buy a pound and get a half pound free. I brought my sister from out of state here and she went to the store website and completed the direction stated 5 minutes before going into the store. She also received the same offer. When we began our checkout process, the clerk informed us they no longer accept that offer. We explained that we had just received this text offer before coming in the store. Wasn't sure I liked taffy until I tried a sample piece from the Taffy Barrel. Their taffy is super chewy and not at all sticky.
