Our property includes a huge field for leisure and picnic activities that ends with a short path through the woods and down to a beautiful Torch Lake public access. Want to know more about the buildings?
Our main building, the Country Store (Eastport Inn) was built in 1860 and was originally located in Eastport. The Eastport Inn served as a stagecoach stop in its early days. Purchased in 1957 by Mary Louise Morse, the general store was brought across (and fell through) a frozen Torch Lake. Rebuilt with a deck off the side for guest to rest, the Country Store now serves as an authentic general store complete with a huge variety of old school candy and chocolates.
Honey House: the original store continues to offer a wide variety of gifts including Minnetonka Moccasins, Torch Lake and Northern Michigan clothing, hats, as well as jewelry.
Jam Kitchen: our onsite kitchen is known for our Famous Cherry Butter and Kream Mustard which we have been making since we started. It doesn’t stop there, we make all sorts of other goodies such as Cherry BBQ Sauce and Cherry Salsa. In addition, we are famous for our old school donuts, made fresh daily!
History
Established in 1945.
The Brownwood Acres Shops are historic landmark known for creating lasting memories and satisfying taste buds.
In 1938, at the tender age of 7, Mary Lou began selling her grandparent Honey at a roadside stand on East Torch Lake Drive. In 1945, due to WWII, sugar rations made it hard to find sweet treats . Using the honey they produced, her grandmother (Granny Brown) decided to offer her family recipes to the local community. Soon, she added onto the building in 1951, and the Honey House was born. A must stop gift shop full of Torch Lake clothing and apparel, authentic moccasins, jewelry, and so much more!
With an love for old buildings, Mary Louis decided to rescue an old Stage coach stop from the other side of the lake. Built in 1860, the Country Store was brought across (and fell through) a frozen Torch Lake in 1957. Still an authentic general store, this building is packed with old school candy, jarred goods, bulk chocolates, bagged goods, and more.
Meet the Manager: Jordan and Weston D.
Jordan and Weston are fifth generation Brown Family members who run operations at the Brownwood Acres Shops. The brothers (2/5 boys) grew up across the street. At that time their father made Brownwood Acres Famous Jams, Jellies and Mustards in the basement! Now with operations handed down to the boys (a third son Reilly helps during the summer) the fifth generation continues at Brownwood Acres.
Any given day a visit could result in seeing Jordan or Weston making fresh Donuts, Hand-Stirring a batch of Mustard, maintaining the grounds, or just conversing with patrons turned friends.
