Great experience overall! First of all, I went online and booked an appointment with Erica and I arrived 10min earlier. However, the parking lot was a bit busy and it took me a few minutes to find a parking spot. No issue, parked 5 feet from the store! As I walked in, my stylist was already available and greeted me very kindly. The room is full of light and very inviting. Eye modern but also cozy. It sends a very nice vibe! I explained to Erica what I'd like and what I'm looking for. She listened and did exactly what I wanted! No upselling or any other extra chargers. My number one thing I noticed is that she listen what was done before to my hair and acted accordingly to it. That is a talent. I'm not usually the type to write Yelp reviews, but I thought it was about time that I'd write one for Nichole. (Spoiler Alert: She's Awesome) I need to preface this with the fact that my hair is SUPER-thick Asian hair. In general, I have a hard time finding, trusting, and committing to a hair stylist that understands and knows how to work with my hair (because it is so much to work with). However, after my first appointment with Nichole for a simple toner + haircut, I had a feeling I would be seeing her again. Even though I went into that appointment not really knowing what to do with my hair, Nichole talked it through with me and I came home satisfied with a refreshed tone, and a tamed, thinned-out mane. Fast-forward a few months, and I had started considering a balayage again. Up until then, I had been following Nichole on Instagram and was always impressed by her work. After I finally figured out how I wanted my balayage done, I mustered up the courage to go through with it via Nichole. [ BEST DECISION EVER ] Nichole did a fantastic job on my color. (You will see in my photos). She managed to replicate my sample photo I found on the internet, and she styled it so cute! It was the most dramatic hair color transformation that I have undergone (nerve-wracking in itself) and I was so satisfied with the result. She is such a sweetheart, and was so easy to talk to throughout the entire session (which is important when you are sitting there for 3 hours+). Fast-forward to today, and my hair is totally grown out, and long and thick as ever. I am ready to chop it off, and better yet, I'm down for an undercut. An undercut! Who do I turn to for, yet, another dramatic hair chop for myself? NICHOLE! Coming to this decision after looking back at all of my other past haircuts, I realize that Nichole is the only one that I truly trust with cut, color and styling of my hair. If my work allowed it (and my self-confidence), I would trust her with so much more dramatic hair colors and styles. That is saying a lot to have so many qualities in one person. I have a balayage appt coming up later this month with her, and I am already looking forward to it. I'm so happy to have found her this year. She is such a gem and deserves so much praise! I have already recommended her to so many friends and coworkers, and now you, random yelper. TL;DR Nichole ROCKS. Don't hesitate to book with her if you can for all your hair needs. I've had my hair cut by many people but minh is hands down the best stylist yet. Ive gotten so many compliments on my hair cuts it's crazy. The other stylists are very good too. I can tell by the cool cuts I see every time I come in. The salon itself is minimally done. There isn't crazy loud techno music playing that's guaranteed to give you a raging Migraine by the time you leave. There's a simple selection of hair products that are very high quality. My hair hasn't felt this good in years and that's saying something. Lastly there aren't little kids running around screaming at the top of their monster little lungs. I personally loathe children and am loving the fact that this is an "adult" hair salon. Take your kids to Supercuts people!!!!! To sum up I recommend this salon and minh to ANYONE. read more

This review was difficult to write, because I think the reviews on yelp on how great the hair cuts and coloring are all accurate. I booked Swank Studio for a wedding, and this review is solely based on that. I booked my trial hair & makeup for the day before the wedding to save myself a trip because it wasn't near home for me. That was my main mistake. First, I'd say Swank gets a 5 for customer service. If I could do it over, I would just do the trial a month in advance and I would know then that I may want to try a vendor that suits my style better. Their style just didn't fit me, especially the makeup. But the communication was great in the months before the wedding, and they were so nice about letting me cancel the makeup after the trial. I felt really bad because the wedding was the next day and I know these ladies are booked way out in advance for hair appts. The problem with the makeup was it wasn't what I expected of wedding makeup with the layers of moisturizer, primer, foundation, concealer, etc. It was very basic, and much too colorful for me. Being Korean, I wanted that clean and soft look, with contouring around the nose, concealing of any freckles, brightening of the skin overall, accentuating the eyes without dark eyeshadow, makeup that would last hours through a wedding. However, seeing that I was not happy with the makeup they put on, the salon let me go ahead and cancel the makeup for the next day. I was able to book a vendor from LA to travel out the next day and give me the look I wanted, but I have to admit it was more than twice the price of this salon. The bridesmaids opted to do their own makeup. The hair stylists were totally professional and so sweet. I showed them a picture of what I wanted, and they gave me that. The only problem was the picture I showed them was for a girl with blonde hair, and I did not realize the side braids on brown hair would cause my scalp to show in rows along the side of my head, which is definitely not what I was going for. I didn't actually see this until I looked at the pictures from the side. Apparently my bridesmaids did, but by then, it was too late. I do wish it would have been pointed out at the time the hair was done, so we could do it over without the scalp showing so much. But again, if we had done the trial earlier, I would have caught this. The moral of the story is, if you book wedding hair & makeup, do your trial early!! read more

I found Mihn at another salon in nearby Carlsbad based on reviews of her expertise in working with Asian hair. I have a whole lot of Mexican hair and she can shape and style my hair into styles that have never seemed to work when done by other stylists. She takes her time and creates a masterpiece of a hair cut. I always leave her feeling like I have a whole new persona with my new hairstyle. I can't say enough about Nichole at The Swank Studio! I found her after scouring Yelp for reviews on wedding hair and make up. It was only my wedding reception (ceremony was out of state) so I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars to look good at a party, but of course I wanted to look done up. Nichole really excelled at doing that for me! She scheduled a consultation with me prior around my schedule which was awesome because I live out of state and was only coming into town 2 times prior to the big day. She really understood my vision and have suggestions that I ended up loving and implementing in my design for hair and make up. I don't wear make up too often and when I do, it's very natural (usually just mascara and eyeliner) so it was important that I look like myself on such a big day. Needless to say, it turned out awesome AND she even let me come back later on on the day of for a small touch up of make up and make sure my hair was holding up. We went down to la jolla and the beach for photos prior to the party so that really helped me look my best the entire day and she is a saint for offering that to me free of charge! I would recommend Nichole and the swank studio to any of my friends or brides to be for competitive pricing and awesome service! You don't have to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars to look and feel like a million bucks. She did my maid of honors hair and make up as well and it looked so good.
