Disaster! Extremely unprofessional, especially the owner! I hope that by sharing this awful experience, no one else has the misfortune of using A+M Moving Company. Moving is stressful enough, and A+M made the experience absolutely horrible. I've moved at least 10 times in my life, and this was by far the worst experience I have ever had. I moved from downtown Manhattan to the Upper West Side. They estimated that my move would take four hours total, including the travel time from downtown. It took eight hours, costing twice as much, and everything that could go wrong, went wrong. For starters, they showed up 1 1/2 hours late, which pushed my move into another move in my building, so I had to share the service elevator, which significantly slowed things down. There were three guys on the job, and while one worked very diligently, the other two did a lot of standing around, not efficiently using time. Instead of wrapping furniture, they just stood in the hallway, waiting for the elevator, which was right across from my apartment. I was paying by the hour, so this was very frustrating. To make matters worse, they underestimated the amount of furniture and boxes I had (I was very specific about every piece of furniture I owned), so the truck was too small. It took an extra hour to load, in order to try to fit everything in. In doing so, the guys literally crammed things in, significantly scratching up the legs and front of my desk and dining table chairs, and ripping the plastic around my white couches, so they were stained in numerous places. Since the estimate was not properly done, there weren't enough blankets to wrap all of my furniture. They couldn't fit everything into the truck, so I had to take a $32 cab ride uptown with one of the guys and some of my things. An additional expense. Since the move out took so long, they didn't leave to drive uptown until 5pm - rush hour. The whole move was supposed to be done by 4pm. It took the truck TWO hours to get uptown. When they finally got uptown, they were tired and now working even less efficiently. One of the guys took a lot of breaks to talk on his cell phone, and they all took a break to eat chips. I helped them to move things into my new apartment in the hopes of speeding it up. I also went and got them a pizza. I then noticed that one of the doors on an expensive wine cabinet, was not closing. I showed it to one of the guys and his response was, 'well, we had to move it up four flights of stairs'. What? What type of moving company says that? To make matters worse, my sofas would not fit up the stairs of my new apartment so they needed to take them away to storage. I called the owner of the moving company, now 10pm at night, to negotiate a better rate for all of the wasted time, due to the company's incompetence. He said he would take an hour off the total price, plus an extra $20 (I felt he should pay for the cab ride, but he refused to fully compensate me). However, he did say that he would take my sofas away and put them in temporary storage for a month, at no cost to me. I thought this was fair. The next day, I called him to get the exact address of the storage unit and he was extremely rude to me on the phone, it was unbelievable. He said the move actually took 8 1/2 hours, not eight, and that I owed him another $60 - he said I cheated HIM, when he was the one who quoted me an eight hour move, after talking with his guys. He then said he would not store my sofas, as promised, and that I needed to get them out of there immediately. I could barely get a word in, and then he HUNG UP on me. Worried that I might never see my expensive sofas again, I arranged to pick them up a few days later. He told me to be at the storage unit by 6pm sharp. I was there at 5:45 - he didn't show up until 6:25. As we rode the elevator up to the storage unit, he started yelling at me again, saying I owed him $60. Then he said we couldn't use the dollies to move the sofas into the truck, and needed to go find our own. Need I remind you, that this is the OWNER of the moving company! He was one of the most unprofessional people I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. With so much competition in NYC, it's unbelievable that A+M Moving, especially the owner, could have no regard for customer service. read more
