It's been awhile since I've come here but thought I'd write a review. The staff is very welcoming and friendly, almost like you are hanging out with family. They often have live bands that perform while you enjoy a huge shareable milkshake! The inside is art/plant galore. Parking is easy and the drinks are good. I would say they are a bit on the sweeter side but you are there to get something sweet so thats to be expected. All in all, picturesque drinks and fun vibes all around

I tried the Love Letter, and it was a decadent strawberry shake that was incredibly creamy and packed with flavor. It wasn't overly sweet, just rich, smooth, and perfectly balanced. The real surprise though? The grilled donut holes that came with it. They were warm, slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and honestly the perfect pairing with the shake. So good. I also took a sip of The Street and WOAH -- that one completely caught me off guard in the best way. The flavor was bold and unique and rich! Friendliest customer service as well! If you're craving a milkshake that feels more like a dessert experience than just a drink, this place is definitely worth checking out. Creative flavors, great textures, and a fun twist on classic shakes

The Straw is hands down my favorite dessert place in OC, especially since I have a dairy allergy. It's so hard to find dessert spots that offer dairy-free milkshake options, and The Straw does it perfectly. I am absolutely obsessed with The Love Letter, a strawberries & cream milkshake with powdered grilled donut bites. The name couldn't be more fitting since my boyfriend and I always share it haha. The workers here are so sweet and thoughtful too. They've even given us two straws before so we can share, which is such a small gesture but honestly still makes things feel special. The place itself has so much character too. There are fun little trinkets all around, and they even have a Yoda tucked in the corner, which just adds to the charm. Amazing dessert, allergy-friendly options, and genuinely kind staff. I'll never stop coming back!

LOVE THIS PLACE When my friend and I pulled up (private parking up close) we were shocked at how busy it was on a Tuesday Despite how busy it was and only one person working, Patrick still took the time to walk up to us while multitasking and greet us, asked if we had any questions, told us he has vegan substitutes and gave us the whole rundown on things (I can't stress enough that a milkshake place has vegan / dairy free options) they also have an option to add alcohol. Another bonus, they are a nut free environment for anyone who has severe allergies. The shakes we picked The love letter-strawberries & cream milkshake with powdered grilled donut bites. La Bella Donna -espresso milkshake with tiramisu inside (both were a solid 10 but I think I liked this one the most) There's also a popcorn machine inside. You serve yourself. It's next to a water cooler as well for free water and free popcorn. I even got sucked into playing the claw machine while I was there Patrick (the owner) seems to be very into the community. He serves local craft beer and while we were here he had a special limited edition milkshake inspired by the Play - shucked. Which is a musical playing in Costa Mesa Nov 11-23rd. The milkshake was called children of the corn These milkshakes were delicious! They did not have an ounce of artificial taste. They all tasted extremely fresh and real. None of that fake flavoring. And the thickness of these shakes! I can only imagine how good they are with the adding alcohol option The atmosphere was so cute. I really loved the milkshake bar set up. When I talked to Patrick and he mentioned he used to bartend, I could see where the inspiration for this came from and how he was great at small talk and customer service. You could pull up a chair and enjoy watching everything be made right in front of you. When I arrived there was a group of kids sitting at the milkshake bar and talking to Patrick about music. They were all talking about different bands and etc. I can't stress enough how great Patrick was They have a really nice fire pit. (It was stored inside during the day) That blew my mind for this hole in the wall milkshake place. I asked the owner when the fire pit comes out. He said on the weekends when it gets really packed. They also have games you can play (I saw a bunch of card games) So if you like to eat outside / or just meeting up with friends for a shake, this will entertain you for a while. They also have karaoke nights and other activities / events. I could go on forever about how great this place is. I'm going to have to come back in the name of science to try the alcohol add on to my shake lol 5 stars for Patrick the owner 5 stars for the atmosphere 5 stars for how delicious the shakes were 5 stars for having a bunch of vegan / dairy free and nut free accommodations

The fam and I love coming to The Straw. We don't get to come as often as we'd like. The milkshakes are crafted so well, the service is always great! The decor is unique and always fun! Always a great experience! Perfect place for a quick sweet treat (shakes, a scoop of ice cream, and/or an adult beverage), date night stop, or for fun!

Delicious shakes! Patrick never disappoints me with his creativity when it comes to making his shakes! Great presentation and tasty mixtures!

Been going here since they first opened and it's amazing every time. Cute little spot, and Patrick the owner is always coming up with new shakes and happy to recommend something to you with enthusiasm. Rest of the staff over the years were also enthusiastic about making something tasty. My personal favorite is the Mr Grey, which is an earl grey shake with a cup of hot tea.

A cute, ambient milkshake shop! They have items where they collab with locals, and this time, there were two special milkshakes they were promoting. I ended up just getting the classic "Street." You can never go wrong with a Cookie Monster flavor The gentleman who served us was bright and welcoming. The milkshake itself was yummy! The consistency was good, not too thick, not too thin. The sweetness level was a good amount as well. Goldilocks would be very satisfied if she was looking for a milkshake and not porridge lol I would love to come back to try their other flavors as well!! They also have a cute little popcorn machine where you can help yourself to and some little claw machines with cute stuffies (some Sanrio things as well!) Overall, great experience, I definitely recommend for anyone looking for unique but not too crazy milkshakes!

I think the owner is the one who took our order because he was very friendly and knowledgeable. We got the donkey Kong and the Glamp-fire. I got mine dairy free and I couldn't even tell!! Really good presentation and the taste hit the spot! The place is clean and seems like a chill spot to hang out at. We'd come back.

Such a cute little place!! Takes their decor seriously- it transports you! So many incredible milkshake options and silly personalities made for such a unique and quirky space. I got The Bear milkshake, and was more than full afterwards. Played a little cornhole and claw machines with some free popcorn. Felt like a spot in an 80's movie!

Delicious milkshakes! The owner was so nice. He had lactaid pills - so no excuse not to come here and try milkshakes!! The place was decorated nicely. Had a piano, and open karaoke on Fridays. The owner was super friendly, ready to answer any questions and really provided a nice environment. They had some games available for people to play if they wanted to.

Super cool little milkshake spot. They have games and live music. On Friday nights, it looks like they have karaoke too. Victoria helped take my order. She welcomed me in and I asked for reccs since it was my first time. She said exactly what I was thinking - donkey Kong milkshake - banana + chocolate chip w/ cannoli. She even told me how to enjoy the milkshake!

One random Thursday night I realize it's time for a sweet drink. Milkshakes were on my radar and I randomly found this place. It's a cute vintage-like look to the whole vibe! I ended up with "the street" milkshake which was an Oreo shake with cookie dough topping. Do not underestimate the size of these milkshakes because they are filling! And the toppings are meant to dip into the shake. There might be a decent wait for the drink, but it'll be worth it. The drinks may take longer because of how long it takes to get the right amount of ingredients blended to perfection. Also, milkshakes have a thick texture so it can honesty just take a little. But check it out if you're in the mood for a sweet drink! We'll be back!

Some of the great decor that sparks great convo!

The Straw: Modern Milkshakes Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - The Straw: Modern Milkshakes

Are the dairy free vegan options just the milkshake base or do they also have whipped cream/toppings?

The whipped cream is vegan, but some of the other toppings can't be made vegan. But if you ask they'll tell you witch.

What is the milk/base used for the vegan shakes?

    It's coconut milk

Are the food options ever returning?

    Yeah. This week!!!! Finally !!!

Do all the milkshakes come in the glasses? Or is it just the alcoholic ones?

All shakes come in glasses if you dine in

Is there any gluten free options?

Yes, you can customize your milkshake to your preference

Is it dairy and gluten free?

They have dairy free options. I don't know about gf.

What kind of milk is the dairy free option?

I believe its coconut milk :P

I'm a traditionalist. I would typically go for chocolate or coffee. Is this too modern for a simple girl like me?

I tried their la Bella Donna and it's rich but good! Mind you it is $7.50. But it does come with a slice of tiramisu :D but service is so slow or maybe it's just when I went :( still coming back tho haha

    Do they have boba?

Nope! I really would also agree and say they don't need boba. The flavors of the milkshakes are so unique they don't really need anything else in my opinion.

My first time here, but definitely not my last!…read more The Observatory is a fabulous venue in Santa Ana. Parking was easy for us as we'd purchased a pass and we arrived pretty early. The entrance process was licketty split - we carried everything in our pockets. Upon entering, there's a photo spot, merch off to the right, as well as a bar and outdoor seating. To the left of the entrance is a smaller room, this time used for vendors,, but I suspect could be a multi-use space as needed. Bathrooms - clean and well stocked throughout the night - are also this way. Up along a poster covered hallway, and into the concert area you go! There's the stage in the front and a bar in the back. It's GA here folks, but there's a balcony with seats above. We chose the first tier behind the dance floor as there's a standing bar/shelf that spans the railing which is great to lean on and space to put drinks down. The location was perfect for us - up high enough to see everything going on onstage, great view of the folks dancing, and again, offered a space for our drinks and a restful lean. The sound system and lighting effects were fantastic! The lighting perfectly fit the dark, moody, goth atmosphere while the music was as clean and powerful as you'd want. No muddy, echoy, indistinct sound here. And extra wonderful? A pumping AC that kept the packed house cool and fresh as everyone danced all night. Such a great concert and really, the perfect venue for it: intimate yet spacious enough for comfort. Really great venue!

I went to The Observatory to hear & to see Gimme Gimme Disco in The Constellation Room. This event…read morewas put on by events producer Burwoodland (aka Ethan Maccoby & Alex Badanes). Mark Cuban recently gave a bunch of money to Burwoodland, so I thought this event would be decent. I was wrong. Gimme Gimme Disco was a hot mess. I did not at all have a good time. A ticket to this event cost $27-$31 depending on time of purchase, & parking cost an additional $15. The price & location led me to believe Gimme Gimme would be a well organized event with a properly prepared DJ who prepared a professional level DJ set. Not so, & not at all. Random disco music played before the DJ started, & then when the DJ started, I cannot say the mixing or transitions from one song to another were much better than simply letting songs play out on Spotify or Pandora or cutting to commercial on the radio. I wanted to give the Gimme Gimme DJ (Julimuah?) the benefit of the doubt, so I stayed for awhile to listen to see if the mixing got any better. The Gimme Gimme DJ did no real mixing. Songs were blended in at random points. A song with a tempo of 100 was played immediately after a song with a tempo of 115. Songs were regularly cut mid vocal etc. The quality of DJing/music was not good enough to expect people to pay money to buy tickets. I'm incredulous that The Obseratory would book such a mediocre event/DJ/etc. Because the Observatory is a venue where professional musicians often play, there was a sound guy or engineer on the sound board. I asked him what was going on with the DJ. I mentioned she was not doing any mixing at all. He agreed, & then he added: "Yeah. DJ culture has changed so much though." I do not know whether this was an apologetic statement. It is hard not to read/construe the statement like a subpar excuse. After speaking with the sound guy, I opted to request a refund, & to leave immediately. I asked a security/door staff to connect me with a manager. The security personnel referred me to management. Here is the gist of my dialog with the manager: Self: The DJ for Gimme Gimme Disco is not mixing at all. Songs are simply being played end to end with little mixing, beatmatching, etc. The dancefloor stops between tracks. It is just really bad. Sorry. Management: I hear you. Unfortunately, the Observatory cannot refund your ticket. Gimme Gimme Disco rented The Constellation Room so it is their event; not ours. They rented the room for the night. Self: Okay. I understand. Could you please put me in touch with the people from Gimme Disco who booked The Constellation Room & planned the event? Management: They (Gimme Disco) have a website, etc. [The manager then proceeded to show me the contact us page of the Gimme Disco site]. I realize the manager might not have legitimately known who from Gimme Disco coordinated the event. However, the Observatory staff did not make much of an effort to connect me with anyone who might actually issue a refund. A contact us form on a website is usually a dead end. So the rental format of some events, such as the Gimme Disco event I briefly attended, allows The Observatory to make money without much, if any, responsibility/accountability, & getting in touch with anyone representing an event results in being forwarded to a FAQ or Contact Us page. Seems like a pretty ideal business structure for The Observatory & any themed event planners booking events. The Observatory makes money renting space; the event makes money too. Anyone who feels or was cheated out of their money is left with no one to direct their complaint to--unless a website Contact Us page counts as a person. I obviously did not risk eating any food or drinking anything at The Observatory. I feared the drinks might be as bad as the music, so I walked back to my car sober, & happy to no longer be inside such an indifferent, disappointing, unprofessional, & impersonal venue. I am legitimately stunned that an event put on by Burwoodland & all the deep pockets behind it could be so utterly lamentable. I want a full refund. An apology from The Observatory &/or The Gimme Disco people would not hurt either. People should not have to pay concert level prices for crappy DJing, & a dismal ambience. I reached out to Alex Badanes for a refund. He initially suggested that I would be issued or given a refund. I never ended up receiving a refund. Neither Alex nor anyone representing Burwoodland followed through after the first hollow mention of a refund. Fake talent, mediocre event, & false gestures are the norm for Burwoodland & its reps.

It's in a really nice area of Costa Mesa close to a bunch of hotels, south coast plaza and some of the best restaurants. (So many options for you to pick from and have dinner before your show) The architecture of the building itself is really beautiful. I would say it's a little tucked in, because I am always in this area and have never seen it before. The ambiance inside is nice as well. It's extremely clean This place has a parking garage and valet. Unfortunately, we had no idea they had valet. So we just automatically parked in the parking garage. But they do have a little walk way that is extremely easy to get to the building from the garage The lines went extremely fast for getting into the building. There was no restrictions on handbag size. ( or at least they didn't say anything to me about it / could differ from show to show and who is performing) All I had to do was open my purse and walk through a metal detector. Everyone was so friendly Once we entered the building, there are tons of staff directing you where to go if you need help finding your section They do have stairs when you walk in, but they have elevators. I chose to walk up a few stairs and then take the elevator to get to our seats We had second floor box circle level seating. It was extremely easy to get to the seats and the lady who took us to our seats was extremely kind and helpful She also gave us the rules - No placing your handbag on the railing, no video or flash photography I can't stress enough, the importance of elevators and it being accessible. So 5 stars for that The bathrooms were very clean and had a great amount of bathroom stalls. So there was no line I only saw one very tiny stand where you could get refreshments. I handed her $20 and she repeated "$24". I told her I just gave you a $20 -she said no. I had just taken out $80 from their ATM so I know it wasn't in my wallet because I only had $60. I canceled the quesadilla And said screw it- paid her the extra $20. So basically $29 for 3 street tacos. And went in my way. She is sneaky. Probably gets away with this on buzzed dudes in the bar.

The lighting and the sound system was on point with other great venues. This was my first visit to the Tiki Bar. Parking is limited and I had to find street parking a couple blocks away but no issues there. Prices were great, some venues like to gouge you for drinks. $9 for well cocktails $5 for bottled beer. You can't beat that in most venues. Compared to HOB it was a steal and the same level of music and people. Smeller venue but great sound, great energy and great people. Prior reviews that said bright lights and bad drinks I did not experience that at all. The tiki vibe is admittingly lacking there's a sparse amount of tiki related decor but the tiki drink I got was great and strong and cheap! What more can you ask for. The crowd was great except they all scattered like cockroaches when the music ended LOL!
