Fun venue - dive bar for the well heeled locals and visitors alike. It's a bar - no food is served. But drinks are strong. They have a full bar and the bartenders are old timers who know how to work the crowd. Drinks were served in plastic cups, no frills. Not cheesy, not pretentious, just a great venue for intimate shows. I think entire place fits 250 people. Bathrooms were clean and plenty of parking. We had a great night. read more

Profiling at its finest. Walked up they told us to pull and show our money the older white man in a suit jacket I guess he was the owner or manger is yelling $15 cash at the door.rude. Told one of us to have another form of ID bc they can tell an Iowa ID like everyone walks around with 2 forms of ID everywhere. They were rude. Soooo disappointing considering we dressed up for 90s night for our friends 30th to be treated like trash. The Stephen Talkhouse is s well known music venue on the east end of long island, in Amagansett, NY. The live music is awesome and the bartenders are very pleasant, taking great care of the customers. They have many great shows there, including The Stanton Anderson Band this past weekend. Would rate less than a 1 star if possible. Walked up with a group of 20 people for a friends 30th birthday- dressed up for a 90's themed night to celebrate. Bouncer immediately singled one friend out and stated his Iowa ID would not suffice to get in. Additionally, I assume the owner/manager was out front rudely stating "$15 cash when you get in the door" in a passive aggressive tone without making eye contact and "Go across the street to the ATM if you need cash". One friend pulled out cash to show them and they stated "Un-fold it and count it in front of me one at a time" - poor attitudes and a waste of an Uber trip from our Vrbo house. I came to the Stephen Talkhouse, a famous East End dive bar, in August, 2019, to see Rufus Wainwright perform there. Happily, we ran into Rufus, his husband Jörn Weisbrodt, and their daughter Viva Cohen on the sidewalk in front of the Talkhouse for a short chat. We were walking in opposite directions and stopped for a bit. It was a beautiful moment. When we went to the venue, we were happy to discover that because we bought our VIP tickets as soon as they went on sale, we had seats in the first row. I came here like three years ago and thought nothing of it. It was a very normal dive bar, wasn't too crowded, but had cool live music and a good staff. That was on a Wednesday. Long Island's BEST live music club. And they aren't kidding. This place has got to be the second best place on the entire island to catch a band. The only downside is that it is waaaay out there on the south fork - so you'll need to make a sleepover of it. Definitely worth the time and trip to see a band. read more

I sincerely hope the vibe in this place is better when there are live bands because what I witnessed on one of their "dj nights" was pretty ratchet. There were may be one of two more sophisticated looking patrons which appeared way overdressed for such a dive and then the others consisted of young kids who drank way too much, will dance to anything, followed by a yaking sesh in the bathroom. One girl could barely walk and was being escorted out by her friends. Where do I even start with the DJ? A friend said she knew the guy but I don't trust this friends judgement in music and let's say I trust it even less now. The set was poorly mixed, flow was all over the place and the final straw was he played "Macarena". Are we at a wedding? 1993 called, they said time to update your track selection buddy. To think, I paid a $5 cover charge to be subjected to this! They should have been paying ME to tolerate it. I didn't have fun here at all. The bartender was great and the only reason I gave the place two stars. Drinks were tasty, he prepared them quickly, good pour, he got the order right every time, and he was friendly. For the remainder of my visit I sat at the rear of the bar where the TV is located and watched the Olympics while my friends were off doing who knows what. read more

Stephen's Talkhouse is a unique venue for live music in the Hamptons. Divey yes but where else can you see great acts up close these days? Weeknights are best if you don't like crowds. I usually spring for reserved "VIP"seats up front to ensure that I don't have to stand all night. Last night half the crowd got up and danced together during Rusted Root! Went here a couple times this summer with some friends while on vacation in East Hampton and had ridiculously fun nights every time. They get awesome bands/artists to perform ranging from a wide variety of genres. However, if you're looking for the real fun, go on a karaoke night and be both amazed with some people that get on stage and absolutely kill it, and thoroughly entertained by others that put on a whole performance singing their hearts out to Crazy Rap by Afroman with 100+ people singing along. Besides that, the space itself is super cool, well decorated, and pretty spacious with billiards and an outdoor bar. They serve your normal bar drinks and, take this as you will, the bartenders seem to have heavy hands. I'm not sure how lively it is outside of the summer but I'm sure it's still a great time. Saw JohnnySwinnin late Sept '19. Words can't describe. I've met the stones, who & the boss. Hate to say it but this was BETTER. The Talkhouse is an icon but it's dated. The bar is lame, but it all works - so long as the talent is exceptional, which JohnnySwim is.... Abner made it spectacular by starting off with ANNIE which is not on their live play.list. This is the greatest bar in America. Thats, right. The greatest bar in America. I have so many things to say about The Talkhouse, that this review won't even do it justice. I have been coming here for many years, and I genuinely love this place. It's not just a bar. It's not just a music venue. It's one of those magical places where everything is so perfect and special, it transcends any rating system, review site, and even if I told you all the stories I have from here, it wouldn't do it justice. The staff: Larry, Phil, James, EJ, Nick, Colin, Steve... legends, good guys, amazing bartenders, funny, cool as hell and make you feel like you are at Cheers. They make you feel like you are at home. They make you feel like you are a friend and more than just a customer. Everyone wishes they had that bartender who knows them, knows their drink, makes them feel like this is "their place", and they belong here...these are those guys. This is the greatest staff known to man. Period. The Music: Yellowman, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, Bon Jovi, fucking Roger Waters!!!, Collie Budz, KRS ONE, Slick Rick, The Pharcyde,....the list goes on and on - look at their lineup! This is A BAR. You are hearing internationally know STARS...IN A BAR!!! It doesn't get any better than this folks. No cheesy cover bands here. Only the best. The Scene: All walks of life to the highest degree. Many places claim to have a "mixed crowd" or something to that effect. This place really does. Fishermen mingle with billionaires. Celebrities chug beers with locals. Beautiful women (and not so beautiful women), pretty young things, cougars, models, investment bankers, landscapers. One thing they all have in common is they all are having a great time at a great place listentng to great music. The place itself: Don't like the band in the main room? Go out back to the regular bar area and listen to some music at the bar. Need a smoke or some fresh air? Head outside to the giant outdoor area (also with a bar). this place has it all. Even the bathrooms are awesome! All in all, even as gushing as this review is, as I said at the beginning, this doesn't do it justice. I think its safe to say that I've been to my fair share of bars. So this joint was a trip and a half. We had dinner at another local restaurant, and the owner of the restaurant sent us here - he texted the owner and told him we were coming and to hook us up with the cover, and then gave us the guys number. Which was really nice of him to do. Wasn't too sure what we were expecting, and when we go there things were a little confused because the cover was 30 bucks, the place was m-o-b-b-e-d and the owner legit was arguing outside with some dude that tossed a cigarette at him. After some debate...we went in. Dropped the cover to 10 a head, which is do-able. I think there was some big band there that evening, cause it doesn't seem like the cover is always 30 beans, but whatevs. I saw the drunkest, drunkest people i've ever seen in my entire life. And it was hiiiiiiiiiiiilarious. Legit, hilarious. One dude was stretching himself out and doing the running man, one cat was congo lining around the bar in a Hawaiian shirt, there was a guy in a helmet (just in case he falls) and a dude in a mullet wig. That's just the tip of the iceberg. i gotta say though, some people in the area are entitled d-bags. Not fist pumping d-bags, but "I'm going to walk through you because I'm loaded" d-bags. Once you start droppin your shoulder and tossin elbows...par-tay time. drinks were a little pricey - but the bartenders were heavy handed so it was worth it. And if you're a chic, chances are the bartenders will give you free drinks. Unless that's just me. I went home tipsy, sweaty from dancin, dirty from the dive bar floor, and laughin my cookies off. tips: -bring cash, they charge your credit or debit card 100 bucks for opening a tab that holds for 72 hours -don't be scared to elbow the pretentious -if you don't like crowds, stay home -yous gonna get hot and sweaty and the people around you will be hot and sweaty -the fellas here wear plaid shirts, suckers or cargo shorts, flips, and have hairy chests with two buttons too many undone -you WILL get groped, but its harmless and they're easily dissuaded -cops EVERYWHERE waiting to hand out DUIS - DD or cab it -the bouncers were the ish. They let me cool off in their nook, scooped up the wobbly when they were about to puke, quashed any problems before you even noticed if there were ever a place to go see bromances and white people trying to dance, this is it. After living out here for the last 12 years, I can say this is the definitive Hamptons "nightclub" even if it has a sort of trailer-park charm to it. It's dank, dark, reeks of beer, and WAY OVERPRICED in the summer, it's the one place that bands big and small come to play when the 1% are visiting. Lots of beer choices, loud music and a healthy meat market make it the place to go for singles. Any given night, you will find older men looking for a date, young girls looking for free drinks, people on dates and generally everyone having a good time. I think what turned me off was that they were charging $100 for a show last summer that really, in a joint like this, should have cost $25 at most. That's the Hamptons, I guess. But still, the only true dive bar in the Hamptons that hails as the best place for live music. read more

I have been going to shows here for well over twenty years and have seen great artists here-too many to mention. Since COVID restrictions have been lifted and live music is back my husband and I have been to two shows at the Talkhouse, Dawes and Low Cut Connie. In both cases the sound engineering was just abysmal. The music was deafeningly loud, you couldn't hear any lyrics, you couldn't tell instruments one from the other. Dawes complained about the "medieval" amps. I won't go to another show here. Too bad. It used to be a good place to hear music. read more

Apparently this is where all the people from New York and the rest of the East Coast comes when they're visiting the Hamptons, but if you're looking for a classy place to chill and have some drinks outside, do NOT come here. This place is filled with just-turned-21 undergrads who are reveling in their ability to drink in public, and not gracefully either. A fight broke out inside and the bouncers were barely interested to break it apart. The one redeeming factor is the band that plays on the weekend. My $30 went to them, and was for the most part worth it, but I didn't even get an opportunity to hear them really because the fight started next to me and as a short person, I didn't want to continue being trampled on. read more

4.4 Very pricey, very cool spot. I am one of the cheapest people I know, but I will pay the $20 cover charge and $8 for beers. Huge place. Many different areas. They get a lot of cool bands. And everyone in there is there to have a good time. The best time to go is on a random weeknight in july or august. This might the year it gets too crazy and crowded and wacky with jagoffs. My advice is: 1. get drunk before you go, the drinks are very expensive 2. Make friends in amagansette, east hampton, or montauk, because this place is waaay out there, and there's very few, very expensive cabs. 3. Dress like a surfer or a city deusche, or a city deusche dressing like a surfer. There are all kinds of girls who will faun over you. 4. Explore the whole place while you're there. Went there yesterday (beginning of the off-season) so I offer a unique perspective. Only 2 beers (Brooklyn Lager and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale) on tap but drafts were only $5 each. Very friendly vibe, dim inside lighting so I prefer the outside area. Took me a while to realize that the black swinging door near the bathroom leads to another bar area, (and not an employees-only area as it looks!), which I call the "naked room"-lots of interesting pictures of nude people on the walls! read more

This is a shitty dive bar with terrible live music. I was charged $40 over my bill + tip on a Saturday night. I bought 4 drinks totaling $54, left a $11.00 tip and was charged $101.00. When I called to ask why I was overcharged, they told me that every person that opens a tab is charged a $101.00 authorization fee. They claimed to have signs up "everywhere"--none of which were obviously placed to me; even if this is the case, a hospitable establishment would verbally notify every patron that opens a tab that it would charge them a $101.00 authorization fee when they open a tab. I am disappointed with the lack of communication, transparency, and the truly rude phone call I received to explain this fee. In any case, this is bar is not worth going to for overpriced liquor where you get to listen to ugly middle aged wannabe musicians sing terrible OAR covers. ‍ read more

I was underwhelmed. I went on a Friday night, no bands, just karaoke. It was not at all busy, and after waiting about 20 minutes at the bar to be approached by the bartender (who looked right at me a few times), and it not happening, I began to put on my coat to leave. After seeing this, the guy behind the bar stopped doing shots with his friends and came over to see what I wanted. He was wasted. Completely gone, like, I couldn't understand a single word he said. I managed to get a drink from him and he would not accept payment. Alright, your loss. He was nice enough, but completely smashed. The karaoke was just awful. I know it isn't fair to blame the place for the people in there, but you should know that this place attracts a local crowd of total losers. I saw a handful of drunk people, barely able to stand, let alone remember the words to Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters," leave and get into a car and drive to the next bar. I will say, I would check out a band playing there as I'm sure the scene is much different. Also, they have some really cool decorations and an old school cigarette vending machine I was digging. I have have going the Talkhouse for many years and seen countless awesome shows. I have never had any issues at all. The staff always great and having a disability problem since 2007 The Talkhouse has GONE OUT OF THEIR WAY for me so that I can enjoy a show. Saying it is a dive, it is a classic place with such great history and it is that character that makes it outstanding. I now drive One hour to get there, at one time I drove 2 hours in traffic sometimes several times a week from Oakdale after work with many (younger) employees and all left with a great memory of history! If you want to hear live music in the Hamptons, Talkhouse is your spot. Keep in mind that the vibe here is completely different in the summer compared to the off season (most of the reviews here seem to be from summer visitors). Weekend nights in June/July/August can get pretty crazy with a LONG line down the block. I find it much more enjoyable to visit Talkhouse without the summer crowds. If you happen to find yourself in the Hamptons on Halloween weekend, this is a great spot where you're guaranteed to have a good time. My favorite regular band is Hello Brooklyn - they play at Talkhouse at least once a month and have a fun lineup of pop cover songs. I've always found the bartenders, bouncers, and other staff to be friendly and welcoming, as long as you treat them nicely and with respect. read more

I went on a random Wednesday night during July at around 10ish paid a $5 cover and had a great time. The crowd is completely diverse everyone from the age of 21-60 goes there and very casual dress. Drinks are the usual Hampton standard about $10 for a mixed drink, have no idea about the beers. And the bar tenders do buy back! You can't go wrong here. read more

Went to this amazing spot on Long Island last Saturday to see Keifer Sutherland perform. Got there early for the show so we decided to have a couple of local Montauk brews before the show. We definitely made the right choice. Got to meet some of the amazing staff of Stephen Talkhouse and listen to some great stories of this famous place. The staff were beyond nice and a big shoutout to Dan and Tammy for taking such good care of us. Definitely plan on going back there again. read more
