The buffet table
Melville P.

I can't tell you how excited my wife and I were to finally go here. We'd been seeing the pictures on social media of beautiful and interesting food. Based on those posts, we expected somewhat of an elevated experience. We couldn't have been more disappointed. We were there on a lunch buffet day. It was a health code nightmare. If no one got sick from that buffet food it was pure luck. Nothing was covered. The buffet table had no heat except lamps. The potatoes and green beans were cold. I didn't try the chicken. The temperatures were all off, generally stone cold. The Italian beef looked absolutely disgusting, red and dried out. The wedding soup was literally sitting on a table in a metal pan unheated. The iceberg salad sat on the same table also not cooled and the cups of ranch dressing sat unchilled and uncovered next to it. The pastas were both cold. The Alfredo was bland but the marinara was good. The pizza looked good and was hot, but I didn't like the texture or flavor. My wife thought it was average pizza. We had higher hopes for the BBQ platter since it was coming from the kitchen. It was simply ok. Despite waiting quite a while for the platter, it arrived lukewarm. Assuming BBQ is made ahead of time, heating it up correctly is about the only thing that needed to happen, yet it did not. The pulled pork and brisket were ok, nothing special. No dipping sauce was served for the brisket or turkey which was odd. The pulled pork was drizzled with sauce. I don't like turkey so I didn't eat it. We both agreed that the green beans side was by far the best food of the meal. The server came out of the kitchen with the meat platter, but stopped to scoop cold green beans from the buffet. I had to ask for them to be microwaved. After bringing the food temperature to staff attention, they only charged us half price for the buffet. The effort was appreciated, but they shouldn't have been serving anything from that buffet except the pizza. The place was clean, but they were clearly having staffing issues. Ambiance was a 3 out of 10. I had wanted to return another time to try a crab dish, but that is highly unlikely. The worst part was while waiting to pay my bill for a bad meal, I got to watch several beautiful pictures of amazing food pass by on the lobby tv screen that don't resemble anything I saw or ate here today. It literally looks like another restaurant's ads.

It's good to get good old southwestern Pennsylvania cuisine! Pierogies always rock!

While I grew up in the Mon Valley, it's been 4 years since I've visited. So happy to get good food that I grew up with. Nothing beats it! Very casual place and the staff was friendly and just excellent. I'm glad we stopped here for lunch

Thankful for Yelp for pointing us to a restaurant that we may never have heard of! Located in Monessen, this restaurant truly brings some light to the small town. The food was very good. The menu had a huge selection, everything from unique BBQ to seafood and pasta. The town of Monessen is pretty quiet, so we were surprised when we arrived and the restaurant was super busy, now we know why! This place is a great find. Everything from appetizer to entree was very good. We don't cook with salt at home, so I did find the food to be very salty (crab risotto and French onion soup specifically). I liked the option for BYOB. There was a corking fee of $7.50 for our table of two. We were overcharged for a soup on our bill so I will have to keep an eye out next time, I'm sure this was just a mistake. Food was a bit salty for my liking but ultimately it was very good and we would return for sure!

A BBQ treasure in Monessen. Very good food. Just right BBQ....not over smoked. Nice people. Super service. Clean surroundings. Do give is a try. Dennis

Hands down one of the best hidden treasures. If you haven't been definitely have to go. Brisket Alfredo and hot chicken Parmesan won't disappoint. Service was fantastic. Very family oriented and the owners are fantastic.

Great BBQ restaurant in Monessen, Pa. My first time here, I've always read good things about this place. And, now I know why. Food was tremendous!! A friendly wait staff, very good at their job. Starting off with an appetizer of Brisket Quesadillas. They were awesome! Crunchy shell, tender, juicy brisket, filled with Mac and cheese, and a cheesy, bbq sauce mixture for dipping, absolutely delicious! For my main meal, the Ultimate Beef and Cheddar burger. Half pound of Angus, juicy, perfectly cooked burger, topped with the juicy, tender brisket. I added bacon, and caramelized onions. It already comes with a cheesy, cheddar sauce, but I added my normal bbq sauce, and ranch dressing. This burger was killer, huge, messy, absolutely one of my absolute favorite burgers anywhere now. The Brisket was piled on, everything worked perfectly, a 5 star burger!!! A side of crispy fries rounded out an amazing burger experience. A new favorite place to eat now, I'll be a regular here. Family had the Cuban sandwich, they loved it. Everything is made in house, all of their sauces, the meats are smoked in house. 5 stars all the way!!

Went for breakfast with a friend and her son. Great family environment, I had the special they were running on a Sunday with a T-Bone steak, eggs with cheese, a bagel and grape fruit juice!! Steak was cooked just to my liking ( between rare and medium rare) Eggs were soft and fluffy like a cloud with soft delicate cheese. I also ordered a side of burnt brisket ends, cooked just right and hint of salt was perfect for flavor.

Update I have come for dinner and it was great. Everyone I was with seemed to really enjoy the BBQ/Italian concept. Staff and owner were so friendly, helpful, and welcoming to everyone who came. Here's a rundown of recommended food we had and were all delicious. Spicy seafood pasta Wedding soup Brisket Alfredo Queso with homemade chips Crabby fries Highly recommend anyone in the Mon Valley. BYOB if you wish because the owner doesn't want to raise his kids in a bar.

Wow, great food. I had the Jamaican jerk ravioli, and they were awesome. Others in my party had the chicken marsala and the chicken parm. They both said excellent food. The place was super very busy, and although our server forgot to bring out our soup and salad before the entrees, I am not going to punish the rating for it. Next time I'm back in the area, I'll love to try some other option.

Cinnamon Roll French Toast. A sweet treat breakfast for sure. Very tasty.

Fantastic food at Steel Plate, the Smokestack is amazing!! Only reason for lower rating is the parking situation and tiny dining room

Long time customer of Caporella's, dating back to their days in Perryopolis…read more My wife and I dined this week at dinner time for the first time in a few years, it will probably be our last. The menu is the same, massive menu with a list of perhaps 10 different specials. Immediately a red flag, you can't have that many freshly prepared items for a dinner service and have most of it be frozen food service products or pre-made and frozen ahead of time. The bread they give, while hot and warm, is undoubtedly a food service product that isn't real bread, it can't be, and that's an easy one. My wife found a hair baked into her stuffed shrimp, and i ordered chicken Marsala and had to choose a side "pasta, fries, baked potatoes, etc", which is odd. Pair the dish with sides to make it interesting. It just felt lazy and boring, very much turning into a boomer restaurant where the deal is "big portions" and not "th highest quality and vibrant food we can make". The food was good, not great, and for the price tag I'd have expected fresh, all natural, ingredient shining food, but what we got was hot, mediocre flavor wise, and food that has low self esteem. Not to mention our salad lettuce was legitimately brown wilted, very visible from the plater/server prospective, but they sent it out anyway. This may be the reason both my wife and I's guts were wrenching all night, as it was the only common thing we ate. I wish this all weren't true, I love this building and my history with the restaurant, but never again. If you want fresh, from scratch, from fresh REAL ingredients with an amazing menu, check our Jaffre's Tuscan Table in Mt Pleasant, you will not be disappointed. Even my wife said that we need to hit up Tuscan Table to cleanse us from Caporellas. I wish them the best, but we're breaking up.

We have tried many times over the years to get to the new location, but it is so difficult. Especially when you have kids and family events, and have to plan two weeks ahead in order to get them to give a reservation. Be forewarned, make a reservation! You cannot just decide to go to dinner one night and choose Caporella's....at least we've never been able to. For our visit this time, we really liked the location. It is definitely beautiful. Our service was good, as well, while we were there. It was just the wife and I with our youngest, since she was a last minute add-on to our planned date night, and the server was great with her. Food wise, some things impressed, some did not. I do not feel the quality of what I had this time matched the stellar experiences I used to have at the old location. The price tag on few things, as well, didn't measure up. Let me explain. For appetizers: The Beans and Greens were still literally the BEST I have ever had in my life. Their version still stands for what I measure all others against. The Cheese Logs were good albeit crazy for the price, and breading was super heavy on them. For Soups: We had to try the French Onion Soup, as we always do anywhere. It was..eh. Reminded me of a beef vegetable soup with some onions thrown in. There was no depth to it like a stellar FOS would have. It reminded me of something that was just thrown together really quickly. For Dinners: I had the Chicken Parm. Chicken was good, but I really did not like the spaghetti sauce. I'm picky, and it probably is just "me". I don't like tomato-y canned tasting acidic marinara. The wife had their version of a Chicken Piccata, her usual go to, and hated it. She took it home, and I ate it for lunch the next day. It was very sour. Daughter had gnocchi, and liked it. For Desserts: A spumoni, which was great, and a Tiramisu. HATED THAT. I was under the impression it was going to be Tiramisu....not a dry as a bone tiramisu-flavored cake. Was the first time you would hear me say I was very thankful for getting such a small piece. Would NOT get again. Overall, I am not sure if I will be going out of my way to go back again for anything other than those Beans n' Greens. They really are amazing. But, for anything else, the price tag and what we received this time was not going to draw us back again vs. other options in the area, compounded with how difficult it is for us to get there with the reservation-must-have. It's good, but not THAT good.

We started our evening with Manhattans and the very sweet, tart, expensive cherry really topped them off. The dipping oil for the bread loaf was really good, with just the right amount of balsamic vinegar, mmmm. My husband and I shared a Caesar salad. Plenty of shaved Parmesan cheese, anchovies added to the Caesar taste. Portion was nice, but the lettuce was a bit dry. We could have asked for more dressing . Anyway, let me get to my Red Wine Braised Pork Ragu over gnocchi. I will be headed back just for this. I was in a big hurry to eat, and didn't take a picture. There was enough for three servings, covered with red , delicious sauce that was filled with the most tender pork, and covered with sprinkled Parmesan cheese. All this over gnocchi. Oh my goodness!!!!!!! Our table had two orders of Cacio E Pepe, creamy Romano cheese and black pepper sauce, similar to American alfredo, tossed with fettuccine noodles. My husband added blackened chicken. He felt the chicken was very good, but according to his definition of Cacio e Pepe, his dinner was just a little too creamy, although delicious. While leaving, my husband mentioned to the bar tender, a young lady, how good our drinks were. Her face lit up and you could tell she takes pride in her work. Thank you for a very nice evening.

We were very disappointed in the seat we were given, A very small round table in a corner with 2 leather style chairs, cigar bar type seats. My husband and I were very uncomfortable and didn't speak up because they were busy. After we were seated our waitress took our drink order and brought out our bread with no plates or silverware, we had to ask for them. At least we can say the food was very good, but not good enough for a return. I want to be comfortable when I got to a restaurant and especially where I am celebrating something special. The place needs to remove this table and replace it with a regular table and pay more attention when people make notes when making a reservation. Because I this I just cannot give it more that 3 stars.

I ordered the breaded zucchini as an appetizer and a meal. There were four pieces. But they are stuffed with goat cheese, and it just felt too rich.
