Usually like this restaurant. Go there every once in a while but was disappointed when they decided to back out of a program that they agreed to. Was happy to purchase some restaurant.com certificates for it and thought that I would be going there more often because of that but they put a sign up saying they were no longer honoring them. Gave us some story about the deal was not honored the way it was supposed to be but refused to honor the certificates. Although food was pretty good ando staff was friendly our dining experience was not good because of the unbusiness like attitude on their part. You would expect them to honor a deal that they had agreed to and if it didn't work out well for them to then no longer participate by no longer being a part of the offer, not by not honoring the already purchased deals. I can tell you the food here is definately good, the only things I can be nit-picky about is that the ribs have very little meat on the bone every time I order them. Although the ribs do have nice flavor, and a very tender texture, as if it had been slow-cooked for hours. We came here on Father's Day to take my dad out to lunch but unfortunately, they don't serve "lunch" on Sundays. Our waitress seemed like she didn't want to be there. Not that she was bad or anything, but she started off telling us that "Father's Day" is a holiday so kids don't eat free, I had to wave her down for drink refills, and I just didn't feel any pep in her step. On the plus side, the portions are very sizable here at The Spare Rib. You have to remember your meal comes with 2 sides and a salad. Throw in the bread at the beginning and that comes out to a lot of food! The food itself was just okay. I ordered the ribs and crab cake combo. The ribs were perfectly cooked and delicious. The crab cake was slightly overdone and the corn that came on the side was definitely on the mushy side. They must've left it sitting in water for a while. After we were done, we were given a small moist towelette that's probably enough to clean half a hand. For someone who just ate a rack of ribs, you'd think they would have something bigger and thicker like they give out at Friday's or something. Not bad if you are in the mood for ribs. I had half a rack of baby backs and BBQ chicken. I asked for white meat and waa served 2 plump pieces. The included salad was decent and I asked for balsamic vinegarette on the side which seemed to be an unusual request. Baked potato was just ok. The ribs were quite good and the coleslaw was enjoyable but I am happy to eat any kind of coleslaw. I was to meet my wife here for dinner. She is not a fan of BBQ so I had arrived ahead of her to see if they served items she would eat. I encountered a slight lapse in the initial reception but put it aside and sat down with my wife First let me say that the people there were truly nice to be served by. Anything I write after this is to let Management know that they have a problem. Kerry our server was top notch. The service after we were seated was excellent. We ordered Clams Casino to start. It took a while to get to us. Once at the table I was assaulted with a noxious odor coming from the clams. Being honest, the odor kind of turned my stomach. I resolved to try them as I am a foodie and know the sometimes an aroma does not represent the taste. I found the Clams to be not horrible but also not something to rave about. We sat and talked a while waiting for our main courses. Kerry did come out about 20 minutes before our food arrived to tell me that they replaced my order of Black Beans with Baked Beans. I was curious that if it took another 20 minutes for the food to arrive, why did they not correct my order and give me my Black beans? The other point is that it took just over an hour to be server our main dishes. When we entered the most of the tables were empty. My wife got the chicken fingers, baked potato, corn on the cob. I got the Steak Tidbits and Rib combo with Baked Beans, Broccoli. The Tidbits were OK but so very few of them. The Ribs, all but two of the ribs were almost without meat. The broccoli was without flavor and the Baked Beans were good for the first bite after that all I could taste was onion. The chicken Fingers batter somehow created large spikes which in certain moments made biting into them uncomfortable. The chicken fingers flavor was not appealing. The meat was grainy in texture. The baked potato was dry and without flavor. The corn was tasty. As in another location I reviewed the Service here was excellent. The food and time it took to be served...not so much. I hope to try going here once again sometime in the future and find that things have changed. 5 Stars for the Service, -3 for the rest of the experience. read more

The Spare rib has been around for years. I returned after a decade or so absence. I was surprised by the quality of the food and the portions were excellent. I tried the baby back ribs along with the buffalo wings. Both were among the better choices available on long island. The side salad was excellent as well. The service was excellent and fast as well. Even though we live local we havent been here in several years because of bad experiences with the female manager who I'm not sure is there anymore. Had we seen her on this visit we would have walked out. She was that bad so hopefully she isnt still there. Anyway, decided to give it a try for lunch. Interior is nice and much like what I remember. Lunch special include potato chips. Seriously ? How about fries or a vegetable, not potato chips. That was the first thing I didnt like so didnt get a lunch special. Salad was standard, dressing was good. Tuscan chicken sandwich with mesclun salad, roasted peppers and onions was good though light on the chicken. Side of broccoli and BBQ potatoes was standard stuff. French dip was fine but strangely it costs $1 extra for cheese. I thought cheese was normal on a french dip. It was a good sandwich, side of carrots were OK and sweet potato fries were average though there was a charge of $1.99 extra for them which we didnt realize until we got the bill. It was listed on the menu but the server didnt mention it. Ended up being $19 for French dip and a soda. All in all the food was decent but the prices too high. Ended up $45 for lunch of two sandwiches and two sodas. Too much for the average quality of the food. Service was good and staff friendly. 3 Stars for Food & 4 Stars for Value - This local "chicken and ribs" spot has been a favorite in Commack for decades. The food is pretty good, but the portions are huge and the prices quite reasonable. A BBQ Chicken platter (1/2 chicken) with two sides and salad for $15.99. Baby back ribs (1/2 rack which is plenty) also with two sides and salad for $18.99. Throw in an appetizer or two "for the table" (great onion rings) and you have a great meal for about the same cost as your average diner. The only problem is the wait. I have to respectfully, but completely disagree with the few negative reviews on here, LOL. Spare Rib is one of the best values you will find on Long Island. Very large portions, reasonable prices, great food. Not going to get into the ribs, that's a given. I agree they may not be the "best" ribs, but they are damn tasty and you get a lot of them. Broasted Fried Chicken is amazing. Trust me. Even if you are not a fried chicken fan (I am not actually), it's incredible. They do a lot of mixed grill plates where you can combo various meats/ribs. I also like their chicken wings (they are fried, not traditional buffalo style) and the (blooming?) friend onion. It's a heart attack on a plate, but that's ok with me from time to time. In terms of service, they are good, but not the best. I attribute this mostly to the fast pace, as dinners/lunches are busy. I think if you compare what you get in terms of quality, quantity and price, Spare Rib is a great value. read more

I enjoyed this place when I use to come with family many years ago. Came here a few times recently, the service always seems rushed. Good portion, food selection and the food tastes good . Giving 2 stars because the waitress made a mistake on my crab cake combo. Told me to give one crab cake (out of 2)back. She actually had me take one crab cake off my plate , put it on my bread and butter dish (that I had used) and walked away with it. I was then left with wondering what was the plan with that crab cake - were they going to reuse it? Waste it and throw it away? Petty on her part, Ruined my appetite and not returning. 1st I want to say that Ashley our server was wonderful. No complaints at all about the service. 4 of us went here because we were looking for good ribs. We did not find them here. My fiancée ordered the wing and rib combo, wings came out under-fried and no sauce, we were also told they were out of the sides we both ordered with our meals as they were bringing our meals to the tables. My moms French onion soup had probably 1/2 an oz of cheese melted on top. I have not been to The Spare Rib in a few years so I decided to try it again and I loved it. They redecorated the place since I was last there and the place looks great. The food was very good and there was plenty of it for a reasonable price. The Drunken Pickles appetizer was outrageous - crispy with a delicious spicy dipping sauce. The loaded potato skins were also very good (huge portion size for an appetizer). I had a marinated burger - very juicy and tasty. This place feels like home to me. My family has been going here for over 10 years and they've never disappointed us. They're always friendly and accommodating. We always get takeout, though, so I can't speak on seating times, but it's most busy on Friday and Saturday nights. The fried chicken breasts are amazing, always cooked to perfection. They go great with their baked potatoes. The steak tidbits are awesome as well. And so is the TSR burger. You don't have to like ribs to like this place. In fact, we've never even tried the ribs. One of my favorite resteraunts. All of the food is good. Its a little expensive but its worth it. The bar is kind of small and gets crowded quickly. The whole front of the resteraunt gets crowded by the entrance. Its not so bad in the summer when you can wait outside until your table is ready but in the winter, its a little inconvenient. You also need to hope you get one of the tables in the back because being up front surrounded by the people still waiting to be seated isn't fun. read more
