The food and ambience is still good however..... the extremely small fine print on the menu and NOT mentioned by the staff (until you get the bill and ask) states: menu prices subject to change . So that $18 bangers and mash is charged at $22 without any warning. The $10 quesadilla appetizer becomes a $14 main entree when fries are added without the waitress clarifying which you want. Fries are not eaten and returned but still charged to you for the extra $4. So your meal Is suddenly $8 more without you ever being consulted until the check arrives. Bad business. I absolutely love this place. Went for some drinks for a birthday celebration and stumbled upon Woodhull Tavern. Best accident I've ever made! It was packed so we sat at the bar. The bar top is clean and the decor is awesome. I ordered a Makers Mark, followed by a Guinness draught, while my girlfriend had a SOTB and Moscow Mule. She enjoyed the cocktails while we made small talk with the staff. We were lucky enough to get there before the kitchen closed and decided to indulge in some food. My lady and I shared the poutine. Those Crispy fries, beef gravy, and nuggets of cheese made me feel like a king. It's everything your alcohol-laden stomach could need! My buddies got the Woodhull Tavern burger to feast on. Delicious food and great service in a cozy pub atmosphere. We ordered a variety of appetizers and each one was done really well and set up expectations for the main meal. The Owner Frank popped out of the kitchen and suggested the beef stew served in an Italian bread bowl, as it was new to the offerings. We ordered one of those as well as the Jack Daniel's burger. This was our first visit. The service was very good. We had an early dinner, only table eating. I had the fish and chips. It was pretty darn good. My husband had a burger. Both thought the fries were excellent. My only comment is that my drink was missing the cherry. It would have been five stars with that cherry on top. read more

We just moved into the area, looking for somewhere to go. Pretty happy that we found it. Everyone seems to know each other, it does not come off as a place where you would feel uncomfortable. All of the bartenders and hostess for the night were all super friendly. Ordered some food which came out quick and were up to bar food standards. We ordered fried shrimp and fish and chips. My wife loni & I bothe love a good drink made right and good food.. the very first time we went in the owner frank was quick to make sure we felt at home and he made my wife a hand made margaritas. Anybody can buy the pre-made but not that night.. we both had some food & we were plenty surprised how good the food was.. we all need a bar like this in our neighborhood.. This is not just pub food made by a cook, you can tell this is homemade with fresh ingredients, from a chef who loves what he does. Good and consistent pubs in the Commack area are not easy to find. Woodhull is a winner. Friendly folks, nice bit upscale atmosphere and great food. We went for our first time this week. The place is cute but extremely small and for a tavern, it is too brightly lit. We came for dinner and yes, the menu is limited, but we were able to find plenty to eat. The prices were reasonable and my husband enjoyed the half-priced Happy Hour drinks. Since it was only two of us, we sat at the high tops on extremely wobbly stools. My muscles ached from just trying to stay balanced. I even switched stools at one point, but it wasn't any better. The food itself was fine, but the onion puree/relish on the chicken burger was absolutely delicious. The fries were not that great, deep fried frozen crinkle cuts, mostly stubs. Besides swapping out the fries, the menu should be tweaked to include beer battered onion rings. While there, we saw they were setting up for nightly music, perhaps that might draw a crowd. When we were there at dinnertime, the clientele consisted of two families, us, and several senior citizens that were seated at the bar. read more

After all the reviews of the food being great , i had to try. I brought my 2 friends from the area in on this Thursday night. Upon walking in , the outside said Ladies night. As I walked in , the bar had open mic night. After working all day from early morning till 8:30 pm I was not in the mood for amateur night at the Apollo! Mostly unprofessional novices practicing music and songs. The food that a few people raved about was at best mediocre to say the least. Someone at the next table recommended the crab cakes which we had and weren't on the menu. I had a steak sandwich and we also gad the chicken tenders. Just average bar food. One star is generous because I can't get over the prices of a drink at this establishment. I ordered a martini for $12 (which is typical) but my husband ordered a Captain and Ginger Ale (which we were told after the bartender had put ice in a glass and looked for the Captain) that she was out of Captain. My husband then ordered a Bullet Bourbon on the rocks. The bartender used the jigger to measure out one shot over the ice she originally intended to use for a MIXED DRINK and charged us $14! Hidden Gem that's a great little find. And what you might find surprising is... it's the food that continues to impress! It's not what you would expect from a bar or bar food. I mean it is bar food.. but elevated and done with exceptional execution. LoL. Triple-E I have had burgers. Delicious. Seasoned just right served at the right temp and came with a mountain of fries! The Crispy Short Ribs were WOW Good! Crab Cakes... these did not come out of a freezer and were quite good. Here is what surprised me. The Lobster Rolls! They come two ways. Hot with drawn butter and Chilled with a light herbed mayo. So I ordered them both and... They receive the designation 'these maybe have been the best Lobster Rolls I've had in a long time'. I know. A boastful claim. But at only $18 a pop. How can you go wrong. In the words of Han Solo - "she may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts". Woodhull is quite charming inside as well. Ok, I know there's no such thing as a 5 star pub. But if there were, this is it. First, the interior is warm, cozy and authentic. Almost like stepping back in time (I found out that the Woodhull was the name of the very first tavern in Commack). Fantastic old world bar along with intricately carved chairs in the dining area give this tavern a unique ambiance for Long Island. Second, the food is absolutely outstanding. I mean outstanding not just for a gastropub, but compared to any restaurant. We have been twice and both times blown away by how good the food is. I've had the pulled pork sandwich and last week the tavern dog. Best hot dog I have ever eaten. Sounds nuts, but the dog was out of this world (it's actually 2 dogs grilled and stuffed with your choice of items and then combined in a single roll and served with fries. Btw, the sweet potato fries they serve with the burger melt were bang on too). My wife had the burger melt as did our friends. Everyone was raving. This is a must stop place for any food lover. It's an absolute must for anyone looking for a tavern with a great menu. We have been searching for the right local place for us for years (see previous reviews). We have finally found it.
