We buy a surprisingly large amount of squid ink ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Spanish Table has an endless variety of goods, ranging from food, to wine, to cookware (peep the industrial-size paella pans in the back). Items are rotated out regularly-- we like to pop in and ask about what's new. Staff are lovely and eager answer questions. Kind of heavy on upselling at times. A while back I came to this idea that I needed black squid ink for a pasta dish that I wanted to make. I looked long and hard for it within my area but couldn't find it. I was just about to pull the trigger on purchasing through Amazon but fortunately I just threw black squid ink inside the google search bar and The Spanish Table popped up. I was in disbelief that a place so close to my employment had this and when I told my foodie group they were excited and asked if I could possibly buy a bunch for them. They had medium sized bottles to packets of smaller amounts. The smaller packets were perfect for my recipe since I knew it would be hard to use up a whole container. I walked there but there is a good amount of street parking. It's near the corner of University and San Pablo so it's quick to drive by it if you're not paying attention. They had an amazing supply of paella pans and other ingredients that you could think of. There was a few cook books, a few freezers in the back for frozen items, and some knickknacks. I don't want to assume that the cashier was the owner but she was very friendly. read more

When I got to the store my bag with all the ingredients was there waiting for me. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and even helped me select a few other items. But besides the store, what really impressed me is The Spanish Table recipe for Paella. OMG! I made it on the grill and it turned out great! This recipe is legit! I went today for some Christmas gifts and left with a whole bunch of items, everything from carrot and sweet potato jam to made in Spain potato chips, and cookies and sardines. Extremely unprofessional business! I bought a few bottles of wine on their website and later the same day got a phone call from the store that the price was wrong. It was listed at $45/bottle on their site(what I paid) and now they wanted me to pay $75/bottle! That was really strange, but even if it was a mistake, a good business will honor the price they have on their website. The store is terrific for all goods and cooking equipment for anything Spanish. I bought a lot of products from them for a large paella dinner and asked if I could return things if I did not end up using them. They indicated I could but to do it quickly and do not wait as they have had some issues in the past. When I attempted to return a few items within the same week I purchased them I was told they would not allow returns for ANY FOOD ITEMS. They would only take returns on cooking equipment. I was shocked as they have no signs up anywhere in the store indicating this policy. I had all my original receipts and some of the stuff I was returning I could appreciate their concerns BUT when they would not even take the Bomba rice and I asked for an explanation it became very clear to me they had no valid reason. They just don't want any returns and I suspect it is a money issue. I politely asked why they do not post this policy and they had no explanation. So if you are in doubt then buy less than you think you will need. read more

I bought a paella pan from here about 10 years ago and figured it was time to make some yummy paella. What inspired me was dining at La Marcha about a block away....I've only made it twice since owning my pan...first time was a fail...1/2 the rice didn't cook, with the other 1/2 being perfect....didn't make for pleasant eating...2nd time lacked flavor so i figure 3rd time has got to be the charm Bought most of the items i need..Valencia rice, saffron, paella mix (yes, I'm going this route this time!), chorizo, pimenton and some other items that just looked interesting. I needed some assistance on finding pimenton and the lady at the counter was helpful in presenting the options - sweet, spicy, smoky...who knew? The gentleman there was also helpful and let me smell the differences and assisted with any wine questions. I'll be honest, when i first walked in it was a little intimidating...no other customers, quickly greeted and then it felt like walking through a library. They have of fun and interesting items but wouldn't know what to make...it would be helpful if they had some recipe cards near some of the spices or products for inspirations. The Spanish Table--- Berkeley I bought a $35.00 bottle of sherry as a present for my husband, along with several other things at this lovely shop. However, the wine was undrinkable---gone sour. In case you're thinking I don't know sherry, not so. This was simply gone bad. So I took it back, with the receipt. The employee at the counter looked me in the eye and said, "We can't take it back. It's against the law in California to take back wine." Incredulous, but not wishing to argue I left and called the shop. The next employee said he would have to ask the manager. He called me later, asked if I was familiar with sherry, and told me I would need to return when the "wine manager" was there. So, to sum up my experience---I returned a bad bottle of wine, ready to taste in case of doubt. I had the receipt. Instead of apologizing and immediately replacing the bad wine with another bottle, I'm lied to, then told to return, as if there is any question that I had been sold a bad bottle of wine, for which I have the proof. I can say that as I entered the place, I was so excited to see familiar items that they were selling that I knew when I was vacationing in Spain! The Spaniard in me loves seeing some of my favorite products available so close to home--saffron, picos, arroz bomba, vermut, sherry, ventresca de bonito, jamon iberico de bellota, morcilla, y mas! The only downside is the pricing, especially knowing how super affordable a lot of this stuff is back in Spain. Then again, we ain't in Spain, so I understand the need to charge what they do. Import fees are no joke (I've looked into importing from Spain before) plus it's the Bay Area. I have no problem, and actually really enjoy, getting the goods here from time to time/in between trips to Spain and stuffing my suitcase with the classics (still need to find a way to bring back an entire leg of jamon iberico). I had heard about the Spanish Table from some customers at work who told me that this place had a pretty sweet selection of Spanish goods. I make my way out to the area once every couple months from the South Bay and added it to my to-do list for my next visit. Overall I thought the selection was pretty good, but could have absolutely been better. They had a decent amount of meats (multiple grades of jamon, chorizo, and morcilla), cheeses, wines, dried beans, dried lentils, pasta, canned fish (tuna, sardines, mussels, clams) and lots of the earthenware and paella pans. In additional it they also had paella broths (squid ink, seafood, and valencia types) which was great if you're looking to make a muy authentico paella and can't seem to find these anywhre else in the Bay Area. That being said I was really wondering where all the Spanish snacks were. There was a table full of turrone which was nice, but only one type of picos (disappointing) for $4.99, and hardly any other types of snacks or sodas (I was really hoping to get some Spanish lemonade for making tinto de verano). Overall I certainly appreciate what they do offer, but I would have liked to see even more Spanish goods. I was amazed at the entire store's inventory when coming during the Xmas season to purchase a few gifts: a nice bottle of Cava, and a Spanish cookbook (hat-tip to one of those discount engines).... I come here for the morcilla (blood sausage) and it never disappoints. Also the olives filled with anchovies and the chupa chups. Yes, I have strange tastes! This place is really cool and you can find almost everything Spanish and Portuguese that you have been craving since your last trip there. This place is very bad for your budget! You will find so many delicious Spanish foods, cookbooks, and WINE! They have a really fantastic selection of wines. If you want some special port - maybe for a gift or special occasion - this is THE place to buy port! During the right season, they also sell "pimientos de padron" - and I even found a really delicious vegan aoili in a nice glass jar that was on sale (got three jars!). Inexpensive saffron right by their cash register. You never have to be skimpy with your supply ever again. I don't know of any place that sells saffron this cheap. Well Yelp, we have a dilemma! We need to have ten stars so that I can rate this place correctly!!! I love the foods of Spain and this place has those key ingredients that are really hard to find. Key spices like the smoked paprika, Saffron, sea salts, Sofrito and olive oil from Spain and Portugal. If you like Tapas and enjoy making them at home, there are plenty of items to add to your offerings. They feature plenty of Spanish, Portuguese wines as well as bubbly Cavas/champagnes and desert wines! Plenty of cookware here from Spain, Portugal and Morocco! They also have cookies, candies and the famous toasted almonds from Spain! As many reviews mentioned, they have the free world supply of Paella pans ranging in size, coating and durability. Well worth the trip to just learn the differences. The sheep, goat and cow cheeses are rare and hard to find. The selection of Serrano Ham expands and contracts as they get shipments in and the word gets out that new packages are in stock. One of my favorites is the canned tuna that is just awesome. The one thing that I can only find here are the Piquillo peppers which are imported, fresh and just delicious. Ten stars for making these products available!!! The Fast and the Furious Director, Justin Lin, recently complained how Spain butchered rice with paella. I call BS. Paella is great if done right. It's different...sushi rice is different than onigiri rice, Biryani is different than Chinese rice, etc etc. Butchering it would be to imitate it and do a horrible imitation. Paella is no imitation. Found this shop rather unexpectedly. A nice reminder of a vacation that I have yet to throw a scrapbook together for. Brings me back to May and June 2007 when we trekked through various parts of Spain. Fantastic experience - not exactly life-changing, but definitely quite the impression. I would go back if I could, even with the language barrier. Looking ridiculous for several hours a day, every day for several weeks - all worth it. A rioja was purchased from the Spanish Table. Despite having bits of a cork floating around in it, it was the perfect wine to go with our Afghan feast. Reminded me of all the wine consumed during our 20-day trip. Will have to visit the shop again when I want to reminisce about Andalusia, or if I should ever feel the need to make tons of paella. Stopped by here yesterday as they were giving a cooking demonstration on how to make paella. They were generous enough to give out almost full-sized samples of the yummy stuff. If you want to learn how to make it, then this is the place to get your ingredients and your paella pan. They sell all sizes of pans from little tiny pans to huge 3 foot wide pans that you can cook out on a barbeque. They also sell all kinds of imported Spanish foods such as alioli, chorizo, hot chocolate, etc. There is nice little selection of Spanish and North African cookbooks and Spanish and Portuguese pottery and glassware. REVIEW FOR ONLINE PURCHASE There. Now that I've got that out of the way, I can't gush enough over the customer service skills at The Spanish Table. I bought 2 4-packs of Estrella Damm Daura, a gluten free beer that isn't available in Louisiana. It was a birthday present for my gluten intolerant brother. Truth be told, it was a two part operation. Ship the beer to me in Louisiana, then remove the labels from the outside and covertly ship it to Texas. Thanks to draconian alcohol laws, Spanish Table can't ship directly to Texas, so I planned on doing the dirty work myself. Eventually, the beers arrived, but upon inspection, a bottle was smashed in the bottom of the shipment. After some quick calls to UPS and Spanish Table, I had 8 more beers headed my way at no cost. And this time, they were practically clad in armor. Spanish Table went overboard on the packaging so nothing was going to break on round 2. Anyway, these guys stand behind their product and were a pleasure to work with. I can only assume their retail operation is equally awesome. Thanks! read more

If I had to throw together a fiesta - be it an informal tapas tasting to a full-blown paella for 150, this would be the ONLY place I'd need to swing by - it's like... a Gourmet Emporium that has the magical and gracious ability to absolve you of procrastinating... which I personally have needed on more than one occasion. I'm always complaining about Spanish wines being under-represented at wine stores. This store makes up for that, they have ONLY Spanish wines (well, there's some Portuguese wines as well...) They also have the REAL paprika powder and other basics for survival that are otherwise difficult to find. I try to stay away from this store, because I'm always tempted to buy one of those huge paellas* and the fire ring to go with it. But I don't want to spend so much money on something I know I'll use only once. Temptation is a funny thing. * Yes, the dish is named after the pan you cook it in.
