    Ordering window on winter's afternoon
    Meghan G.

On a cold weekday, I decided to head to the Soupery to satiate a craving for chicken noodle. The location is wonderfully walkable if you work in downtown Portsmouth. Service was quick, friendly, and helpful when they ran out of the full amount of one ordered soup. My officemate and I traded bites and all the kinds we ordered were delicious and had that great homemade quality. Not much to say about ambiance because there's an ordering window and that's it! You won't have to stand in the cold long!

Had the cajun sweet potato and chicken soup with a classic grilled cheese. This meal completely hit the spot I'm so happy I came here. If you blink you'll miss it. There's no super obvious outdoor seating but the juicery next door is the same owner and you can sit there inside or outside. The soup felt super wholesome and clean. I'm extremely satisfied. :)

Outstanding jammin' bacon grilled cheese sandwich and two alarm chili! Had sandwich first at Durham location and came back for more!

    Yum.

So, I went to The Soupery hoping to nosh on a grilled cheese and soup. I was lucky enough to walk in 15 minutes before closie, which happened to be 3 pm on this day. They had a note posted on the door, that they were closing that early for a staff meeting. Strangely, it wasn't the only busniness I noticed in town with notes like that. I think I found the restaurant from the town map they gave me at my hotel. I am a sucker for an amazing grilled cheese, so with my mid afternoon hunger in hand, I set out to find this little hole in the wall. And that it is: a hole in the wall! Teeny, tiny. There is a tiny counter against the wall, with a few stools squeeed in, but for the most part, it seems to be a place best suited for grabbing your food and going elsewhere to enjoy it. Very small and cramped, Can't say that the service was friendly, or in any way engaging, unfortunately. I did notice a "help wanted" sign seeking "energetic" people, so it seems the owner realizes how important being helpful/friendly is. Hopefully, The Soupery will have some luck soon finding at least one energetic, friendly worker. Not that the girl working there was rude, or slow...just kind of bored to be there, you know? I understand where she's coming from, but you still have to try to seem more interested. Unfortunately, they only had 2 or 3 soup choices...doesn't seem like much for a restaurant called "The Soupery". Nothing floated my boat, so I skipped the soup and went just with the grilled cheese. It was delicious. YUM I would have loved a Diet Coke with it, but they don't carry any sodas, so I drank nothing. That grilled cheese was a 5*, but considering everything else, I must give a lower rating.

    Small hole-in-the-wall soup kitchen.

Visited this last summer and am finally getting around to writing a review. This teeny-tiny place has nice choices of delicious veggie/vegan soups available. Worth a visit. Once you get your soup, find a nice with a view of the harbor to enjoy it as you really can't "dine-in.

**November 2025: Saturday Afternoon Visit**…read more My friend and I had been eating pretty heavy food for the past couple of meals, so I decided to pick something a little lighter for lunch. The photos from Laney and Lu looked really refreshing so I was excited to try their offerings. PARKING: They're located inside a town center/maybe apartment complex? so there were many spots to park DINNIG: Experience: You order at the counter and they'll bring out your food. The space is very clean and modern looking, though you do need to bus your own tray. They have an area where you can also serve yourself cups of water. FOOD: The salads/grain bowls looked really impressive and were served in flat bowls. I ordered the following since they seemed to use many local Vermont and New Hampshire ingredient's -Delicata Squash Toast (SEASONAL): Local goat cheese, delicata squash, pickled mustard seed, microgreens, chili oil, pomegranate seeds on a Juniper Cottage Sourdough made in Newmarket, NH ($14) - This seasonal toast really surprised me. It was perfectly toasted but had enough bounce to hold all the toppings. The goat cheese really paired nicely with the squash and the pomegranate seeds gave each bite a nice brightness do it. This was fantastic. -Blissful Chakra: Spinach, mixed greens, kale, carrot, beet, purple cabbage, red and yellow pepper, cherry tomato, red onion, pepitas, green goddess dressing ($14) -This was very light and the cheery tomatoes tasted really juicy. The green goddess dressing is pretty light so I think if I were to get this again I would add the cilantro hummus (+$3) to make the salad more substantial -Seasonal Sipping Broth (SEASONAL): vegetable trimmings, greens, herbs, reishi mushroom, ginger, nutritional yeast, olive oil, jalapeño, coconut amino, spices ($6 small) - It was served pipping hot which is perfect, but it tasted a little bitter to me. SUMMARY: I really like the healthy options here and that they use many local ingredients. It's a non-meat option for health conscious foodies. That toast was bomb and if I come back I would definitely want to get another order of that or other toast combinations.

My choice was "Waffle Be Here Forever" which was an apple Belgian waffle, topped with fried apples, blueberry granola, whipped cream, and caramel. it was soooooo good and I'd definitely order it again. Also from the Noah Kahan menu, we ordered pumpkin pancakes, which were so fluffy and flavorful. Another win on the menu! Decor in the Friendly Toast is really fun with the walls collaged with nostalgic art. I also liked the Busyhead Project Community wall towards the back of the restaurant which featured written reflections on mental health prompts that were then posted on the wall.

Cava is a very intimate dining experience with a warm comfortable indoor and outdoor seating option. We (parents and a toddler) arrived hungry after driving two hours and had a hard time getting his attention at times. We arrived before 6pm on a Friday but still there was a wait. Once we were seated, the server was pretty prompt and really friendly, though generally service was somewhat slow with a wait for food. We were waiting almost an hour for entrees and about to change our order to to-go because of stress with our exhausted toddler, but of course that's when the food arrived. We had to shovel it in and leave. The food was the most disappointing part. The chips are clearly not homemade. The salsa didn't have much flavor, and the guacamole was a huge letdown. It had a dull green color and very "slop" style texture (think sour cream texture, not chunky like real guac) that all pointed to store bought / not fresh. I had the chicken enchiladas, and the sides of rice (so salty) and beans (very soupy) brought down an already undesirable dish. The enchiladas were cooked nicely but far too cheesy. The green sauce was nearly tasteless, the red sauce is what made it all edible. Wouldn't ever really come back here. I wish I could say something more positive!

This place has gone seriously downhill…read more What used to feel fresh and made-to-order now feels lazy and low-quality. The guacamole was shockingly bad squishy, overly processed, and nothing like the fresh guac they used to make in front of you. The chips tasted like they came straight out of a grocery store bag, which is pretty unacceptable considering how good they used to be. My partner's pork belly taco was almost inedible. It was tough, dry, and bizarrely similar to overcooked chicken with a gristly texture...definitely not pork belly. We ended up leaving most of it behind. We came back specifically for the mushroom taco we'd loved before, and it was a huge disappointment. Instead of something thoughtful or flavorful, it was just a massive pile of chopped fake meat with no seasoning and no balance. The vegan avocado taco was just as bad basically a bland grilled slice of avocado with zero effort put into it. Honestly, it feels like the kitchen has completely given up. The only saving grace was the bar, the bartenders were great and the margaritas were genuinely excellent. That's the only reason this isn't a 1-star review.
