What a quaint local spot! Many people recommended this to my family as a must-try mom and pop stop. In a small building near the hospital, there is menu signage outside as well as an outdoor pickup window. Inside, you will find a fast moving, cafeteria-esque line where you can order your soup, dessert, breads, sandwiches, and a drink cup (self-serve soda and tea around the corner). The decor is country cozy with lots of knick knacks and antiques displayed as well as lots of Oak Ridge-specific historical signage. The soups are homemade and hot and the breads huge and so dang soft! We didn't try the desserts but better believe that's on the list for next time. My husband ordered the fiesta chicken, I tried the red skin potato, and we split a cheese bread. We moved down the order line and everything was stacked on our trays, which we were handed upon payment at the end of the line. Hubby liked his soup and I liked the consistency of mine. Both just really needed some salt and seasonings. The cheese bread was amazing. Looking forward to trying some of the other breads, along with a sandwich and some of the chili with fritos and cheese (heck yes!). I ordered a sick friend veggie soup and a white roll, which was well-packaged and she really enjoyed the taste of all.

As my prior reviews have noted, this is one of the oldest restaurants in Oak Ridge. An institution in itself. That said, the quality of the soup and service has declined in recent times. It's okay. But, the quality could be much better. Still, I think everyone should check out Soup Kitchen (at least once) if you're in Oak Ridge because it's so quirky.

I think this will be my new lunch location in Oak Ridge! There were plenty of customers ordering to-go meals and dining in...the employees kept the lining moving and made the process easy to order. I was expecting my food to take a while considering the meals ahead of me, but it was fast and super hot! The food was delicious and my husband loved his Reuben sandwich.

Best soup in town! I hadn't been to the Soup kitchen since before the pandemic. I forgot how good it is. If you want a variety of great soup choices, a cool vintage environment , great breads, and desserts, PLEASE visit the Soup Kitchen. It's like a little museum.

Reuben and cajun red beans

Cozy little kitchen, with about a dozen soups and sandwiches. Price for a full sammie and bowl of soup with drink and chips, is about $9. I had cajun red beans, with lots of beans, rice, and meats. My sammie was a Reuben which was a bit different than the normal, but on great bread with a delicious kraut and sauce. My wife had potato cheddar, with nice size chunks of potato. She also got a philly which she really liked. Drinks were coca cola products, tea, coffee, water, milk. We didnt try their fresh breads which looked fabulous. My wife got a slice of cake with nuts on top. Only negative thing I will mention is that a near by customer who waited too long for their sandwich till their soup was cold. She reminded staff several times and settled for a sammie different from what she ordered just to eat. Also parking seems limited. Food is tasty...stop by.

Clearly I was late to the party and the early birds knew what was up. Respect. Did we panic? Absolutely not. We pivoted like seasoned donut professionals and started with two dozen glazed holes. That's right. TWO. DOZEN. Most didn't make it home. "We'll just have one" turned into "wait, how many are left?" Then came the full dozen assortment: *Custard filled - dangerously good *Cream filled - no regrets *Chocolate cake - classic, solid, dependable *Glazed - because you can't not And then... the Strawberry Glazed Let me tell you about that Strawberry Glazed. BAM. Sooooo good. Like, pause-the-conversation good. Like, "why did we only get one?" good. They also have breakfast sandwiches if you're pretending to be responsible. Plenty of seating inside, so you can sit there and question your life choices while eating donut number four. The service was friendly, quick, and didn't judge our order size (at least not out loud). If you live nearby, what are you waiting for? If you don't live nearby, it's worth the drive. Just apparently get there before 9:13 if you want Chocolate Holes. Learn from my mistakes.

They serve coffee, drinks, and homemade desserts such as cupcakes, custom cakes, brownies, thumbprint cookies, quick-style fudge, chocolate suckers, and a few other sweets and treats. There are several tables inside to sit down and relax while eating too. It's a quaint little place with lots of potential... Now, for my review based on my own personal experience. (If I could give them five stars for honesty alone, I would.) Upon entering, the display was completely empty - nothing inside. As I was later told (here comes the honesty information), Tuesday is the day in which they have very limited product. They bake each Wednesday. If I understood correctly, maybe they bake on Friday too? That, I'm not certain about...but the owner said the best day to visit is on Wednesday. They are fully stocked, and fresh products and multiple flavors abound. While the display was 100 percent empty on the Tuesday that I visited, they did have a few remaining cupcakes leftover at a reduced rate (half-price). Normally, classic cupcakes are $2.00 each, while the specialty flavors are $2.50 each. (Note: Most small, handheld edibles appeared to be a few dollars each as well.) I decided to try a chocolate cupcake with buttercream frosting and chocolate sprinkles for half-price, while the owner offered to frost a fresh red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing for regular price. She did warn me that the freshness would be noticeable, and she was right. She gets major kudos for her honesty! I can only give three stars, though, because the flavor was not that impressive either. That's just my opinion, however. I would only ever purchase anything with cream cheese Icing from here again, definitely not the buttercream icing for me. Feel free to go in for a sweet treat and a cup of coffee. Just go in on a Wednesday or Thursday if you prefer a larger variety that is fresher than the half-price leftovers. I might suggest smaller batches of product per day or every other day rather than 1-2 large batches per week only. Maybe this is just growing pains. Best Wishes to this new family-owned business to work through the kinks of just opening!

They clearly are making the Tennessee Twist their signature (a fun waffle cone with orange and pineapple soft serve, twisted and topped with orange and white sprinkles). In general, I love the combo of hard scoop ice cream in really fun flavors and several soft serve options. They said they always have a few dairy-free ice creams and a sorbet, too...awesome for my lactose intollerant kiddo. The friendly staff helped us at the counter by the ice cream and then pointed around the counter corner to the topping station. It wasn't super clear when we first arrived, but every single ice cream comes with a topping (and syrups, whipped cream, and cherry), The only upcharges are the fancy cones, float creation, size upgrades, or additional toppings. The service was great and the bright and colorful vibes inside were fun. We really appreciated the kid play area, too. We all enjoyed our ice cream. My son got dairy free and couldn't tell the difference, I had soft serve and it was creamy and delish (not icy like some versions), and the rest of my fam had various hand scooped flavors that they loved. It was admittedly pricey (we paid over $30 for 5 of us), but worth it to keep a fun mom and pop place thriving.

Apparently, this spot has even been shown on several TV and news features for their famous cannolis. I believe it. But the signature treat here is actually the merri-mac tea cake which has been around since the bakery was founded, apparently. It's basically a shortbread cookie with fondant. I can't say that I loved it. I think it would be much better without so much fondant. I scraped it off then scarfed it down. The owner just completed renovations and is working on the second floor now. If you have some time, peruse the pics on the wall and take in the history. The frosted brownies are huge--but very disappointed in it....very hard, like stale hard !! The Apple fritter has chunks of Apple's in them, would be much better warmed up. There are cookies, brownies, cupcakes, single cake and cheesecake slices and full size cheesecakes for sale. My favorites are the oatmeal sammie and the PB cheesecake. I normally avoid sugar cookies but their version with the sanding sugar is too notch! We definitely prefer the storefront, as the items are super fresh and I love that they carry the single servings. Whenever we are downtown for work, this is our stop. When you get something from the Kroger Magpie's selection, it will either be a full size cheesecake or a sampler box of cookies or bars/brownies. It is hit or miss as to how fresh the items are here. This location now refrigerates the sammies, too, which seems to dry them out quickly. Bummer. From either location, we definitely prefer the cheesecakes, pies, and cookies to the actual cake. Either way, support this local gem!
