Our group got a surfboard of 9 rolls and every roll was delicious!! Try one of the rolls with steak in it. It's such a fun twist and it's like surf n turf on sushi! We got the Steeler Pleaser, and just yes. It was fantastic with great heat! The pineapple mojito is just perfect to complement both the fresh food and the vibe of the restaurant. I understand there are risks with that outdoors, but it was excessive. There were bees and small flies/mosquitos swarming the area. From the second you walk in, the decor is adorable and sets the tone for your meal. We had a larger group, and they accommodated us at a table in the back. The server was so attentive and continuously checked in on us. We all tried different rolls, and there were no complaints! Everything was fresh, delicious, and served pretty quickly. I used to really love slippery mermaid but we just went again after a while and I was unfortunately left a bit disappointed. Our service was subpar, we asked for a modification on a roll and it was incorrect despite being printed on the receipt, and the food was just okay. Also it was quite cold in the restaurant and we were not near the door. Slippery mermaid has a very unique sushi menu including a lot of cooked sushi rolls including chicken and steak options. Not your typical sushi and it is a bit pricey, but is maybe worth visiting if you've never been. Maybe I just get sushi too often now and prefer regular over these more creative options, but I really do think it's gone downhill a bit with the service and overall quality of our last visit. read more

Regardless of our professional hockey captain's whereabouts, slippery mermaid is solid sushi in Pittsburgh, which is a nice treat. Since we don't have regular ocean access in Pittsburgh, sometimes seafood can be concerning, but this food is great. It's upscale so it's going to cost a bit, including kids meals which are above $10. They also have wine on tap and tropical cocktails. I appreciate how the business has changed over the years. Previously if you wanted takeout you struggled to get it the same day. They have a new online ordering system with a lot more availability. I'm not going to lie, there were some reviews of this place that made us a little weary to stop in for our first visit, but I'm glad we did. The vibe of the restaurant is wonderful, especially coupled with their cocktail and beer offerings (good on you for carrying Kona beer). If someone recommends this sushi restaurant to you in Pittsburgh, don't trust their taste buds. The mermaid wasn't the only slippery thing about our experience at this establishment last night. My boyfriend and I decided to give this casual spot a try after hearing positive reviews -- a decision we quickly regretted. We were seated promptly, but it took nearly 10 minutes before anyone took our drink order. From there, things only got worse. Our food -- just two rolls and the chef's sashimi -- took 40 minutes to arrive. When it finally did, the sashimi was inedible. The tuna tasted overwhelmingly fishy, the salmon was poorly cut, and the yellowtail looked questionable -- almost spoiled. Despite the untouched sashimi plate sitting in front of us, our server never checked in to ask how things were. We only saw him again when we flagged him down for the check. The Beetlejuice roll we ordered was missing the wasabi tobiko listed on the menu, and one piece contained a mystery chunk that turned out to be a piece of lemon -- rind and all. What was supposed to be a quick, easy dinner turned into an hour-and-a-half ordeal. Between the slow service, the missing ingredients, and the quality of the fish, I can confidently say this was one of the worst sushi experiences I've had in the Pittsburgh area. Both the food and the service were unacceptable. Management seriously needs to reevaluate how this place is being run. read more

Please see my attached photos for the menu in February 2024. Customers may dine in, get takeout, or order catering. This restaurant appeared to have only nine tables total, so when my husband and I arrived after 4 PM on a Saturday, we had to wait 30 minutes for a table to become available. We used our phone cameras and a barcode on the table to access the menu. After 10 minutes, our waitress approached us and took our order. After 35 minutes, the waitress brought out our foods. I ate the Summertime roll (salmon) and the Crab roll. My husband ate the Triton's Tuna roll and the Bucco roll (seared steak!), and he drank an unsweetened tea. Each sushi entree consisted of eight pieces and tasted fresh and flavorful. My husband commented multiple times that he had not previously seen steak sushi at other restaurants, and he appreciated the opportunity to eat steak sushi here. We went here with some friends recently who were craving sushi. We'd never been, but this was a place they had been wanting to try, so we were happy to come along for the ride. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great experience--just meaning that the sushi was not that great and therefore felt overpriced. The rice seemed old/dried out and the rolls were small. I wish I remembered what we got--so many of them had mermaid in the name so when I just went back to look at the menu I couldn't be certain about what I got...basically, it's not awful sushi, I've just had better for the price point! Sushi is sub par. They are really the only spot in the suburbs west of the city to get sushi so you're kind of locked in to one option here. I have eaten take out here as well as dined in for both lunch and dinner on multiple occasions. There is nothing too special in regard to quality of the food or the dine in experience. Service is consistently slow. The inside of the restaurant smells like what reminds me of a sports bar or college bar. It always smells of bleach/cleaner and stale beer. I stopped here for lunch recently when I was in the area for work. The restaurant has a fun and relaxed vibe with interesting and unique names for their sushi rolls. I ordered the "crazy mermaid" which was really just a shrimp tempura roll. It seemed like most of their specialty rolls included cream cheese, which I know is popular in American sushi, but not something I was accustomed to. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked in my shrimp tempura roll. It was not an overwhelming amount and it offered a nice richness and depth of flavor. My only complaint would be the service, which took longer than expected for a total of 3 rolls and a side of edamame. The restaurant did not seem to be busy, so I didn't expect to wait 25 minutes for our meal. Many of them with rather catchy names like Psycho Mermaid, Angry Pirate, Sassy Mermaid, &, etc. I had their Sunshine composed of yellowfin tuna, avocado, salmon, and fish roe. The total bill was 217.80 including a 20% tip my generous husband gave them. Didn't check bags, was ripped off more than half the sushi we paid for. No attention to detail at all for such a large order. Asked that they keep sushi separated since we have a shrimp allergy. Were assured it would be. Daughter had reaction. You can't call because no one answers the phone. "manager" did text my husband and said he would take care of it, currently isn't so I'm disputing the charge with AMEX. Food was great. All of the staff were high schoolers in leggings and acted like we were inconveniencing them. I'm referring to the hostess especially.
