I've lived here all my life, and this was my first time visiting The Slippery Mermaid. It has the best sushi on the Gulf Coast! The service was great, and since I wasn't sure what to order, my server recommended the chef's special. They asked about my preferences and what I didn't like, and everything was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this place to anyone who lives in Navarre, is passing through, or is visiting as a tourist and wants to avoid a tourist trap while still enjoying amazing food. After a long day of driving The Slippery Mermaid is exactly what the doctor called for! Pleasant service, great atmosphere, fantastic food! Jack waited on us, gave us some great tips on the menu, and absolute service with a smile! We started with the Mermaid Tails and Meso Soup, then had the Psycho Mermaid and Sexy Mermaid rolls, along with a Landlubber's Bowl for our non seafaring friend. Florida panhandle and sushi is always an interesting experience. On one hand, people love seafood, on the other hand, many still cringe at the thought of eating raw fish. As a result, the fish that does get caught is hardly ever caught or handled to be ready for sushi. And restaurants that do exist, like The Slippery Mermaid, make an effort to conceal the fish underneath rice and endless toppings as much as possible to avoid scaring their patrons. Slippery Mermaid rolls are a bit whacky. Most are topped with tons of ingredients, are massive and do not resemble a western sushi roll that one might find anywhere else. Perhaps that's a sushi roll Florida Style! Where the big improvement for Slippery Mermaid lies is in the quality of the fish. It's hard to pinpoint exactly why, but it's fairly flavorless. The salmon does not taste like salmon and neither does the tuna. Those deep, unique flavors just do not exist. On the plus side, they are well constructed and the rice is of good consistency. Adding a quality sake list would have been a really great addition to the restaurant. Where The Slippery Mermaid truly shines is the staff. Truly kind people working here, extremely attentive and simply amazing. The space is very busy, almost always. read more

As a native of Pittsburgh, I was thrilled to see that Slippery Mermaid just happened to be in Navarre where we were vacationing. We ordered 3 different rolls and all were quite good. The Pleaser had the right kick and was very filling. Only qualm was the "steak" inside. It looked (and tasted) fake. Otherwise, very good rolls and was on time for pick up! I love eating here, food is excellent and the service is always fast and friendly! Tonight I came in at 8:10 pm to dine and was told the wait would extend past the hours of operation. That's totally understandable, however we got our food to go and ate outside, no one came in after us and there were quite a few tables open. This was a weird experience since myself and others I know have frequented here around the same time and have never had this happen. This isn't New York sushi. And I know you'll say... honey you are not in NY but when close to ocean waters I think sushi will have an exceptional experience. I ordered take out and the rolls came in a styrofoam box. I was a little taken back and worried about it. All of the rolls I ordered were drench in sauce and completely took away from the roll itself. The rice was very soft and mushy and not firm. The plus is the fish was fresh. But I was a little disappointed on the over kill of the sauce. A light drizzle would have been a better experience. The staff was extremely pleasant and the food was ready very fast. Small little sushi restaurant in Navarre that i visited when i was in Florida this summer. We were part of a party of 7 - 3 adults and 4 kids. Unfortunately we had to sit outside cause there was not a place for us to sit inside. But they crammed 2 tables together outside for us to sit at. Food and service was pretty good. Kid ordered the sexy mermaid - which i think he only ordered cause of the name. LOL Kid said it was really strange, but not terrible. I ordered edamame and a poke bowl. Edamame is standard fare. Such a nice cozy place for sushi in Navarre! We love this place. We met a sweet guy named Poppy on the beach a few years back and he recommended this place. We've been coming ever since. When in Navarre, Slippery Mermaid for dinner. Everyone is always so friendly and welcoming. Our waiter this past weekend was so good to us. Very attentive and helpful with our order. Read to see why im giving low stars. Being gluten free with a gluten intolerance we were so happy to see the Slippery Mermaid takes pride to offer GF options on their menu. With that being said we ordered through DoorDash the GF options of sushi. Knowing that they carry GF soy sauce we looked everywhere on the menu for it but it was not there. They had every other sauce on the menu i.e. spicy mayo, Sriracha, garlic sauce (all at Xtra $1.00 charge,) but no GF soy sauce. So we called and specifically and asked for them to include it and the woman said they would. When we received our 63..00 order there was only regular soy sauce. So we called and they did not apologize only made it about the $1.00 charge for the sauce they would not receive. A frigging $1.00. So we had to eat our sushi with no soy sauce. Shame on them read more

We came on a road-trip from New Orleans to Navarre. This is definitely one of the best options when coming through here. The place was busy when we arrived, people waiting to be seated. We didn't wait long since there was only two of us. The vibes are great! Brittany the bartender was our server, she was so sweet and attentive. We eat alot of sushi in CA (where we're from) and we were not disappointed with the quality of rolls. The sexy mermaid was a fun choice, you won't regret it! The chefs roll was killer, nice little citrus on top, and a little sweet Thai sauce, but could be different every time someone orders it - so good and unique! The music was great. Just a very fun, light environment. Their unfiltered sake is great. read more

History

Established in 2009.

The Slippery Mermaid Sushi Bar is a casual sushi restaurant located in the heart of Navarre, one half mile, east of Navarre Beach Bridge. The orginal building that was on this commercial site was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan, and in its place we constructed a Florida Cracker Style Cottage that houses Navarre's first authentic sushi bar. It is the only sushi bar in the area with a waterfront view and outside deck for dining. Our cottage is situated in the proposed "Heart of Navarre Town Center", along busy Hwy 98. We are lucky to enjoy the balmy breezes from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Santa Rosa Sound, not to mention the magnificent view. In the evening, the skyline of Navarre Beach lights up to offer a magical display of twinkling lights...again, what a view!

Meet the Manager: Ricki L.

The Slippery Mermaid is not your ordinary sushi bar. Opened in 2009 by Karen Hineman, “The Slipp” has taken sushi to new heights. Ricki Lawson (Karen’s daughter) and Chad Lawson manage The Slipp “South” while Ricki’s younger brother manages the other location. When Karen opened The Slipp she trained with chefs at universal studios, and carefully sourced ingredients and products to create a unique experience. Over the years her children have elevated the menu by creating new recipes and continuing to update with food trends. As we come into our 10th year of business, we have remodeled and will continue to grow with our loving supportive community.

This fresh Makimono Cucumber Wrap Roll with krab, shrimp and avocado in a citrus vinaigrette was INCREDIBLE! On our last visit I enjoyed the Kawaii Roll. I have to come to the defense of my friends at The Slippery Mermaid Sushi Bar. I do not personally know the owner (although I did walk in on her cleaning the baseboards of the bathroom, and I thought "wow, couldn't she just hire someone to do that?" but her employees explained that she was a bit OCD when it came to the cleanliness of the restaurant), but I do know the staff as I have been frequenting the place since it opened. Always, I am greeted, and treated like a VIP. The food is exceptional and continues to evolve as they add new items to the menu. I get up in arms when someone writes a stupid review disparaging a business (see Erin K. who seems to believe she is sushi critic extraordinaire) and feel the need to address the unflattering comment with regard to the staff, décor, and general malicious comments made seemingly because they are not of Asian descent. Here is a small business that is thriving, built during bad economic times, surviving an oil spill, and forging ahead when so many others are failing. They are a legitimate business, paying legitimate taxes, and adhere to legitimate hiring practices...and no; they are not "Japanese people" as the aforementioned "stupid" review stated. At the Slippery Mermaid it seems they support our local community and offer employment to our local college students, military and their wives, either as servers, dishwashers, or chefs. Good for them for training erstwhile young people, or displaced military wives that are motivated to learn a new skill. Sometimes folks can be a bit short sited. You do not have to sharpen your knives by the river for the head sushi master for 10 years, nor train five years to make rice to be an excellent sushi chef. It is all smoke and mirrors, as apparent by the creative and downright delicious sushi rolls at The Slippery Mermaid. I am appalled that in 2013,being from California and having lived in Japan (again referencing the "stupid" review), that someone would not be more enlightened and diversified to consider that a person can be trained in a culinary skill and execute said skill successfully using the utmost in cutting edge technology in the aide of their craft. I am certain that my Japanese friends (oh, by the way they like to be called Asians now) would get a chuckle out of the review portraying them as the only people able to make palatable sushi. The owner responded and I applaud her diplomacy. She did not have to share the resumes of her employees or justify her operation of the restaurant. As far as her business participation, it is my observation that she oversees the process. She has such a formidable staff, as well as a daughter that is very talented in her own right, so all that is left for her to do is make sure they have the inventory to operate, and the bills are paid. With regard to the decor, it is my guess that it was designed to be different than your typical black and red, geisha flags, bouncing happy cat bobble head...sushi bar! We showed up around 2:30, so the place was not busy at all. Maybe 2 other tables were sat. We are locals and have tried many sushi spots, but this one was by far the most disappointing in the food quality. Who in their right minds puts rice kripsies cereal on top of a sushi roll??? We ordered a salad with ginger dressing. The dressing was so full of carrots, it was just a chunky mess that did not resemble dressing in any way, shape or form. The salad itself was also loaded with carrots to the point of being comical. We also ordered the Chef roll (lets the sushi "chef" create his own special roll) and were very disappointed with what was pretty much just cooked salmon and cream cheese wrapped in rice with some raw salmon on top. No real effort to make anything special there, and it was very pricey for what was received. I was tempted to write a Google review, but after reading far too many snarky and just downright rude responses from the owner, I decided Yelp would be the way to go. If your customers are so unhappy with their experience that they choose to take time out of their day to write a review, why in the world would you make the situation worse by responding to each negative review in such an accusatory manner? Are you truly more worried about your bruised ego than addressing the very real issues your unhappy customers brought to light? Think about how you are presenting yourself and your establishment! I would give this restaurant zero stars if I could. Terrible service & food. Service: walked in, seated and not seen for several minutes. waiter came, we gave our entire order (drinks, app, and dinner) ... 5 min later, waiter brings app but no drinks (mind you we only ordered sodas and water). 15-20 min later, STILL no drinks yet we see our waiter just hanging around .... (again, mind you they are not even busy at this time). We had to ask another waitress to get our waiter because we STILL didn't have our drinks. At that point we expected the waiter to arrive promptly and apologize - NOPE. He still took another 10 min to arrive and just awkwardly stared at the table. We ended up throwing a few dollars on the table and walked out. It was that terrible. Waiter was also very awkward which is not something we usually would even mention, but this was worth mentioning. On to the food: Have been there several times, as we keep wanting to give this place a chance. First off, how is a sushi restaurant out of miso soup?? Next, rolls are very sloppy, but I guess thats a given since its kids making the rolls versus traditional Japanese chefs. Many rolls not even available because they do not have the ingredients available. PS - they advertise creative sushi, in my opinion, just because you add steak or bacon to your rolls, does NOT make it creative. SERVICE AND FOOD = TERRIBLE! Don't waste your time! read more

Several of my friends and colleagues recommended this place to me for fabulous sushi. I was skeptical as well, seeing that I just returned from duty in Japan, and being from California;(what qualifies us as the US sushi capital? The size of the Asian population???) but after eating here, I have returned time and again...and again. The sushi is beyond amazing. The staff is knowledgably, and if you can't choose from one of the many rolls they offer, then they have what they call a "chef's roll". Sometimes I just leave it up to them to decide and they never cease to surprise me. I cannot believe that anyone would criticize a place for not being Asian, or think that sushi would not be great because they are not "Japanese people" , or college age, as another review earlier in March stated. REALLY? The Slippery Mermaid is delightful, refreshing...friendly, knowledgeable, and CLEAN...and by far my friends and my favorite place to kick back and relax! AND the sushi is the best I have ever experienced. I do not think it matters where the chefs came from, or how old they are, you can tell from the restaurant that a lot of time, experience, and thought went into the operation, and apparently it is very successful. I went to the new location in Sewickley, and its not as advertised. Website said to look at ALL GREAT reviews... And most are right. This place is horrendous. The walls were puke green, chairs were shaky and the food was soggy cold and undercooked. I told the waiter that my plate was undercooked, but she didn't seem to care. Didn't offer me new food, didn't tell manager, did ABSOLUTELY nothing. Beware of this place. Owner doesn't know what she's doing. Doesn't train her staff correctly. My boyfriend and I were on a roadtrip and planned Navarre as a stop. We wanted...no, NEEDED to try the sushi. Slippery Mermaid had good reviews, we gave them a try. The service was young and polite, a little slow moving but it's a smaller sit down place so there's no need for fast pace! We ordered three rolls, Dragon Roll was amazing!! The toasted coconut was delicious too and I am not a fan of coconut. I can't recall the third but I remember it had spice to it and "Mermaid" was in the name. We decided to order more! Narimi was spot on-the prices are too. Not too shabby of a bill when we were finished-but wouldn't move here because we would be broke! ;-) Edamame was perfectly seasoned as well. Wow. I just witnessed the rudest treatment I have ever seen of a customer by an owner/chef. This woman makes the "Soup Nazi" look reasonable in comparison. Apparently, the waitress didn't know the menu, gave the customer wrong information, and the customer wound up with something she didn't want. The owner/chef still made her pay for the roll even though it was the waitress' fault. Here's the kicker: the owner told this lady that she didn't want customers like her. Pretty crappy attitude considering how ubiquitous sushi restaurants are and how many restaurants go out of business. read more

When visiting the panhandle, this place is a must! Don't let its size fool you, the Slippery Mermaid offers the best sushi I have ever had! Its decor is beautiful and fun, from its detailed wooden mermaid mounted on the wall, to the television screen fish tank, and to its air-conditioned patio, theres just so much to take in. And the hosts are good about greeting patrons upon entry. The server was okay. Drinks went dry a few times and ordering additional food was delayed here and there, but they were pleasant and when present they got the job done. My only comment about questionable process is this... like many other establishments, parties of six or more are charged an automatic 18% gratuity. This isn't the issue, the tip was on the bill, the server didn't mention anything. Ok fine, the notice is on the menu. Bet when the credit card slip came for signature, a tip was requested on the slip, with recommended amounts provided. No mention was made that the tip was included on the bill. A lot of folks might unknowingly "DOUBLE TIP." I think it's good practice to mention that patrons can augment the tip if they wish, but remind them that the tip was included. Overall, the experience was pretty good. I imagine we'll be back at some point.

We were sat in the party room since we had a large group. It took us a bit to get settled so I appreciated that the waiter was patient with us. Some of us did the $30 all you can eat and honestly when sushi places offer that I take advantage of it. Overall it's a good deal but the sashimi cuts are so small! Like 5 pieces would be an equivalent of two full size ones. The fried rice was hard and lacked flavor. The sushi wasn't bad either. Nothing really stood out but would probably go back
