What an interesting little place tucked away in The Belt downtown Detroit. It's not very big and could be easily missed, but it's an amazing stop nonetheless. It's an open air bar with unique decor located in an alley. How many times can you say you've gone someplace like that? And that it was enjoyable? Here's your chance! One thing I have found is that REAL bartenders are a dying breed. Kind of like the master barber. Most places you'll have your drink served to you by someone with a decent personality and a pedestrian knowledge of how to actually make good cocktails. The Skip is the complete opposite. I wish I would have gotten our bartenders name, because he was one of the most knowledgeable and skilled people behind the bar I have seen in a while. He was also training someone new and watching that process was nice to see. One master passing on the craft to a future master. This place is simply AWESOME, absolutely AWESOME! I stumbled upon this place on accident as I passed the decorated alley way. I was so surprised by how crowded this place have gotten. It had the picnic seatings on the outside with a lounge feel on the inside. I had their frozen coffee with alcohol (I can't believe that I forgot what it was called), but it was delicious! We also had a few beers before we left as well. Honestly, this place is such a hip place to be especially for the more younger crowds. I've been to the Skip a few times - I would say it's one of Detroit's most unique and fun bars. Out of the establishments in the alleyway, the Skip seems to be the center of attention. Their drinks are delicious - my favorite is a drink is a seasonal, warm drink in the winter time. I do think that their drink prices are a little overrated, but the drinks are good so I'll keep going back. Although it is fun to walk around in the summer and enjoy a drink, they also accommodate for the winter by keeping a heater at each table. The service is fast and friendly, and it's fun to hit this place in the center of Detroit. The one thing that I would like to change would be the bathroom situation. It seems they share the bathroom with the pizza place in the alley, and the bathroom gets messy quite easily. read more

It's a small place with not much seating. We had to wait about 15 minutes to enter. So that means standing outside in the cold since there isn't enough space to stand inside. So, you know, don't plan on spending the night there partying...that's just rude! Have a drink or two and let others enjoy the mini wonderland that it is. Unfortunately our server Cody did not make this experience special for us. It was really dark with little to no lighting in the bar when we found hair in our food. We politely called the server over and flashed our phone flash light so he could see it and his response was "we are good we don't need a flashlight for this" and after that comment was made he sent 2 different servers over to take care of us instead of him. Ok I haven't been here in a while but meant to write a review. This bar is great. It usually has a younger crowd with good energy, but It's a chill vibe and the drinks are delicious. I tried one of the frozen drinks and was impressed with the flavor and how strong it was. They have popcorn to snack on and nice outdoor heaters to keep the area warm even in cold weather. One word of warning, these drinks are STRONG. Like I had one drink and vomited into my own shirt on the ride home, so be careful...maybe don't wear an invaluable shirt. read more

An interesting selection of drinks - or as Detroit likes to call them these days - craft cocktails. I went for the Rain Drop, which was the special the night I was there, and I was hooked. I enjoyed my time here. It was crowded when I arrived, this bar during the cold months don't allow a lot of room inside. I got to sit at a counter top but the heat lamp up above must of been directly above me because I got REALLY warm. I did get the Irish Coffee which was amazing, I can see me drinking quite a few of those easily. My husband got the G&T and said it was the best one he has ever had. We enjoyed ourselves but probably won't return until the weather gets better when there is more room or maybe during a not busy time period. We didn't make a reservations, but we lucked out and managed to get a table on the patio right before the evening rush started. The skip has a full bar with many drinks, beer, signature cocktails, and spiked slushes. the bartenders also know how to make any type of drink you want I had a very simple mojito this time. The mojito was excellent ice crushed mint leaves muddled very smooth. My sister and I used Yelp to find a place for outside seating. We came across The Skip and decided to check it out. It is tucked into an artsy alley. It is very small and cute. The frozen drinks are delicious. They look small, but they are plenty! It's a great stop if you're walking around downtown. My only complaint would be that it was a little stinky outside. The Skip is great. This last time we stopped in for the Christmas tiki themed bar, Beach Bum Barry's Sippin' Santa. They're a small space and last year it was super crowded and they took your phone number and texted you when a table was ready and had to wait outside a bit, but this year we got right in. However, we went around midnight after a concert so maybe the crowd had cleared out by then. The theming and decorations are great. Christmas meets Hawaiian beach party. Tiki grass and pink flamingos separated by Christmas nutcrackers. Lots of lights and offbeat rock and rap Christmas music was playing...one song sang "Merry mofo Christmas." There are seven tiki Christmas themed drinks on the menu all with accompanying pictures of the festive tiki mug that they are served in. I had the Sippin' Santa, which was rum, orange juice, Amaro and surprisingly gingerbread mix. I'd highly recommend it! It was very tasty and served in a cute surfin' Santa tiki mug. The Kris Kringle Colada, served in a coconut mug also looked good. They also have food. My friend ordered the Skip mix, which is basically Chex mix. It was served in a brown paper bag for $5 and she said it was tasty. They also serve two cookies for $5. Most cocktails are $12-$14 and if you love the mugs you can even purchase them for around $18. The Skip is becoming a holiday tradition with their festive fun theming. Loved the Hawaiian Christmas theme this year. Definitely stop in for a tiki cocktail before the holidays are over! Such a cool, unique place! I love love love the spot. Halfway down the alley ("The Belt", as it's apparently called), it's all open-air seating: half covered, half out in the alley. On our way to Standby, my husband and I noticed The Skip, the sister bar to Standby, located in the Belt. I was intrigued by the indoor/outdoor concept and would've stayed had it not been for the dreadful, rainy weather. We were told that there were heaters, but it unfortunately wasn't sufficient to combat the 45 degree air. We did take a lamb braised pita to go and oh-my-gosh, was it good. The lamb was super flavorful and succulent and balanced by the creamy sauce. I'd go back for that alone. It was definitely pricey for street food (one pita will run you $14) but it was delicious and tough to find anything quite like it. We def plan on going back during the summer when the weather is (hopefully) better so that we can get the full bar experience. Super fun, new bar in The Belt! Newly opened and situated next to the Standby, Skip Bar is fantastic. It's a completely outdoor bar with a few tables, standing bar area, and the bar itself. It opens out into the alley of the Belt Alley. Not sure what they plan on doing when winter comes, but they have heaters and are ready for it I suppose. For now in the summer, it was the perfect place to stop and have a drink. The drinks were cheap and delicious. I tried a gin drink made with passion fruit that was so fresh, tart and refreshing. This place is bangin'. I met up with coworkers here a couple weeks ago for happy hour, and I found a new favorite cocktail bar. The place is small as hell and is exposed to the elements alongside a parking garage. It has a really cool feel to it with Shepard Fairey work on the wall. The cocktails are bangin'. I've recently been on a mixed drink kick over beer and this place makes up some strong af, tasty af drinks at a reasonable price for being in Detroit -- especially during their happy hour. They have virtually no food available (I think they offered a curry of some sort and that was it), so know that ahead of time ... but the drinks are fantastic. read more

My boyfriend and I checked out The Skip for the holiday takeover bar during Christmas 2018. We arrived shortly after they opened, around 4:30 pm, and there was already a wait. The space is tiny! They texted us after about 30 minutes and we stood around waiting for a table for awhile. Servers kept asking if we wanted to order any drinks, but I was waiting for our table where I assumed we'd get a server. After standing around for awhile another server told us we could sit at the little flamingo tiki bar in the middle of the room so we checked in with the host and let her know. It was a bit confusing and chaotic in there so be prepared for that type of atmosphere! We ordered right away - the drinks are all tiki and/or holiday themed. I got the Blue Christmas (vodka, blue curacao, apricot brandy, lemon, and cream of coconut), and my boyfriend got the Mele Kalikimaka (gin, orange liqueur, lime, cranberry, allspice, and anise). The drinks come in fun glasses (which the door guy told us people like to steal, so my purse would be checked as we left), some of which are available for purchase. I loved the surfing Santa tumbler but it wasn't for sale. The Blue Christmas drink was perfect! It was tropical and coconutty and delicious. The blue color was great as well. The Mele Kalikimaka was not my favorite as it definitely has a strong black licorice flavor. Overall we had fun at the Skip but I liked Park Bar more. The decor is festive with but not really "tiki" (plastic flamingos and lots of tinsel garland). They were playing Home Alone on a big TV which was fun.
