A total surprise after climbing a couple flights of stairs, this is a true hidden gem. The wines are all in-house, and on the dry end. So had a day odd work and decided to see what the wine scene was in the nati. Entered entrance to the skeleton root winery and made myself upstairs to a typical old city upstairs cincinnati building floor. Introduced myself to the establishment staff with situation (Coming back to the nati after 9 years and checking the scene). I was intrigued by the wine scene especially by the locals. The nati has a strong beer history. Long story short. They make their own wines based on their taste preference. Nothing wrong with that. Interestingly after a tasting of the offerings, I chose to get a bottle of the Hamilton white chardonnay wine. I paired with with pistachio lemon flat bread. I would consider that flat bread a dessert dish due to sweet and creamy nature. It paired nicely with the wine. So a 3 star. A place I would come back to. They had a outdoor area that was nice to enjoy wine and food versus the more evening appropriate easy speak / warehouse environment the bar was situated. This place is too cool, very moody atmosphere. We met friends there Saturday night and sadly had the whole place to ourselves. The bartender was awesome and hooked us up with two flights to share. Skelton Root is the definition of a hidden gem. If you don't know where you're going, you may miss it. It's located on the outskirts of OTR, and you go you a short flight of steps to get into the space. One of the things I like about The Skeleton Root is the open space. We came in with a larger party and they were long tables, but also plenty of space to move around. Their specialty is dry wines, but they have red, white, and orange wines. They source all of their grapes from Ohio and surrounding states. They also offered some specialty flight pairings for Valentine's Day, which were a hit with my group! They had two frozen wine drinks. In addition to their wine offerings they have small plates of cheese, bread, etc. that pair perfectly with the winery vibe. Service was friendly and helpful, giving us opportunists to try wine before we committed. Looking forward to my next trip to try out more wines! read more

I walked here so I didn't look out for parking but it looks like there is just street parking. NOT ADA it is up three flights of stairs. I did not see an elevator-but perhaps I missed it. Pretty big windows that let in lots of light. I got there at 5pm and it was just myself and two other people were there when I arrived. I only give 4 stars because I asked for a flight and had to ask questions for information for the wine when I would have expected them to explain and talk with me a bit more. Service was just mediocre. I was served but there I would have appreciated more information on the wines themselves especially because there were only three patrons in the whole building and the other two people were just chatting amongst themselves. Also he rung me up wrong for two things. I asked for a bottle of two different wines and he rang in about 10$+ for each bottle (20$ total overcharged). I read my receipts so I caught it before he paid but over all the customer service was underwhelming. I gave four stars because the wine was pretty good and the cheese board was set up nicely. Cheese could have been better but it was still tasty and on a pretty board. I didn't see if they had bathrooms and water is set out and easy to get. Again check your receipts before paying! And don't expect to have many questions answered on the wine itself but the wines are good the art on the labels and glasses is really nice! An artist that's on Instagram but I am not sure what his handle is. They have some wine stickers which are very nice. So the wine is tasty and so is the cheese. Came here last weekend and immediately fell in love with the open layout. It's women owned and the wine is made in house. The service was amazing. The girl at the counter even made the charcuterie board herself. The fig jam was my absolute favorite. We got wine flights with rosé, riesling and another I can't remember the name of that were tasty too. I don't like sweet wines and these were perfect as It was a nice dry. They offer tours as well once they're not busy, but we opted out. One last thing, I fell in love with the wine glasses. Such a cute design! read more

The Skeleton Root was our first stop in Cincinnati. When I'm traveling, I love to try different wineries. The outside is a bit deceiving, but don't let it fool you... the inside is gorgeous. The woman working the bar was so kind! I explained the types of wine I liked so she let me try the Chenin Blanc which is the wine I ended up choosing to have a glass of! I was a little disappointed that they don't do free sampling; instead, they request that you purchase a flight. Personally, I do not want to spend over $10 on a flight of wines that I may or may not like. I am accustomed to most wineries offering small tastes of 3-5 wines to ease the guest in making their decision. In saying this, the bartender was nice enough to let us try the Chenin Blanc, the Catawba, and the Rose slushie, but I felt too timid to ask to try other wines. I can, however, vouch for the Chenin Blanc... it tasted like a refreshing, crisp Chardonnay. Overall, we loved exploring the interior and lounging while drinking a glass of wine, but we do wish they would allow sampling! read more

I've had The Skeleton Root bookmarked for almost a year. Been wanting to check this place for quite sometime and finally got to pay visit on a Saturday afternoon. You walk in and have to take the stairs. Three flights of steps and you are there. Once you are there you will be impressed with the gorgeous decor! I love the seating, set up (very spacious) and beautiful natural lighting coming through the windows. The gentleman that was assisting us was very patient and knowledgeable on the wines. We were so impressed with the list that we wanted to do two flights: White Wine Flight $10.00 -Northern Libertys White -Chenin Blanc (my fave, buttery at the finish, very good with cheese) -Sauvignon X Semillon Red Wine Flight $13.00 -Northern Libertys Red -Cabernet Sauvignon (second fave, bold and with a great back bone) -Lady Hamilton Blend (my fave! Very smooth) With our flights we enjoyed an cheese tray for $15.00. You get three types of cheese (all local), bread, jam spread, honey fig, and pickles okras. So delicious! Would highly recommend this! After we finished our flights, we wanted to sample the Reisling and Orange Skin Pinot Gris. Both were excellent! We decided to end the afternoon with a glass of wine. I got Lady Hamilton Blend since it was my favorite and my Mr got the Teays Red Blend. We enjoyed the wines so much that we wanted to take bottle home. Ended up purchasing Teays Red Blend- Dry Fruit forward, ripe strawberries aromatics, and shuttle tannins. While we were sipping our wines, we wanted to explore the winery. Towards the back (you go through the wine making area) is an outdoor deck which is in a garage with plenty of seating including a couch. Ooooooo this cute!!! Living in downtown Cincy for the past year and half, I've always wanted to visit Skeleton Root. I never had the chance for some reason but finally last Saturday was the day! And boy, I have been missing out for a year on this place. Plenty of free street parking (a huge plus for Over the Rhine), you enter into the doors and immediately go upstairs. Once upstairs, you enter into a super cute loft looking lounge and bar where there's plenty of seating and friendly bartenders ready to take care of you. But wait, there's more! You notice a sign that says "Patio is open" heck yeah! It's the social distance way, after all. We order our drinks (two frosè please lol) and search for the patio. The Patio: Come to find out, it's kinda hidden... not sure on purpose? PRO TIP: You actually walk through the "Employees Only/Emergency Exit" door. You then go past some wine barrels while thinking to yourself, "Yeah, I'm definitely NOT supposed to be here!" But you must keep going!! I've driven by a few times but never stopped to check it out. I was happily surprised to make it up the top of the stairs to such an open space. The red sofas and chill vibe was exactly what I was looking for at that moment. They were closing early to host a rehearsal dinner, so maybe that's why it was so chill. Really neat area in OTR. The place is open and speak easy feel, but also great for groups to hang out together at! Wine here is incredible, and the atmosphere is even better. I can't describe a better place to be on a chilly fall or winter evening - they have warm lights, comfy seating, big tables, and huuuge windows to watch OTR go by all around you. It's on the second floor, so you can see quite a bit of the surrounding neighborhood and the streetcar, etc. It's really a beautiful location even though nothing else is really around it. When you think Cincinnati, wine usually isn't one of the first words that comes to mind, right? Well, I'd say Skeleton Root is putting it's "root down" in efforts to change that. Making great wine, working to create vineyards to the Cincinnati area, and doing it all in a very relaxed, casual atmosphere. I first heard about the place right here on Yelp, and after reading a bit on it, my lady and I decided to check it out. We ascended the stairway to a very open, lavish yet laid back bar area, with plenty of comfortable seating. In an area behind the bar, you can see where they age all their tasty wines in the barrels. Walk towards the outdoor seating in the back and you'll pass by where the wine itself is made. They have a very cool outdoor/patio area too. The bartender greeted us and showed us the options for drinks and food, which there was a good amount of both. We opted for the white flight (Northern Liberties White, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon x Semillon Blend), the red flight (Northern Liberties Red, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Lady Hamilton Red), along with a cheese tray (Three different cheeses along with artisan bread, pickled okra, fig drizzled with honey, and unsweetened strawberry preserves. All locally sourced.). We were really impressed by all the wines, especially the Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Lady Hamilton blend. The cheese tray was excellent with it too. We even opted for a couple more glasses of wine after we were done with it all (I got the Teays Red Blend and she got the Lady Hamilton Blend). We even bought a bottle of the Teays to go. Skeleton Root is really putting its root down and helping make Cincinnati a wine destination on top of being a craft beer one. Besides, man cannot live on beer alone, so wine it up a little. The Skeleton Root winery is helping bring wine making back to the Cincinnati area. Once a robust winemaking region, Cincinnati is no longer know for wine. While The Skeleton Root does not grow their own grapes, they do source them from parts of Ohio, Virginia, and California. Their wine is crafted and aged in house. If you aren't sure about the wine you are considering ordering, ask for a sample. At The Skeleton Root, they are proud of the wines they create. They are happy to discuss wine with patrons, and even introduce you to something new. Most of their wines are on the dry side. Dry wines are not usually my thing. They are happy to help you pair wine with the light bites they offer. Staff is knowledgeable without being pretentious. Closed bottles may also be purchased for carry out. Skeleton Roots is much larger then it seems when first entering. There is seating in the front, and the bar area. Don't think that's where skeleton roots ends. If you keep going back passed the production area, there is a wine garden that is open seasonally. Through the back of that, there is also a patio that is open seasonally. They are working on making separate access to the wine garden and patio. That way those areas will still be open when the front area is rented out for private parties. Decor is rich and inviting. It is both upscale and laid back. Near the entrance, there is a selection of board games that may be played while visiting. Unlike much of OTR, free parking is available on the street. read more

Great venue for events!!! Wine is nice too. Been to Skeleton Root solely for events so far; a holiday party, pure barre class, and a Yelp Elite event. It is a bit off the beaten path (aka further north) from things in OTR, but this is definitely going to be an up and coming area in the near future as development spreads. I would probably not come here of my own volition or to just mingle, however the interior or beautiful, quiet, and spacious. I even learned that they have a back room and an outdoor patio! read more

Came him to kick off a birthday weekend celebration with friends. We knew we'd have a big group so we tried emailing to inquire about reserving space. After about 2 emails we stopped hearing back but we decided to show up anyways. It's quiet. The bartenders are friendly. The wine choices are freaking delicious. We were able to make space for our group and everyone sat pretty comfortably. They close at 11 so this was a great pre-game/jump off spot if you're planning to head out. This space is amazing. You go upstairs and it's all open and nicely decorated. We were there when it was very empty which meant we could really enjoy the comfortable furniture and the pleasant bartender. While we were there we did wine flights of red and white- there are only three each flight, which is less than you are likely used to. I had the whites and I really enjoyed them. They tended towards crisp rather than overly sweet. My partner had reds, and they were jammy, but I wasn't overly enthused with them, really. They were okay, but not brilliant. We had the lemon pistachio flatbread and that was -nirvana- so I highly recommend giving that a shot. Also while we were there someone brought a dog, so that is always A+. Really nice experience, and I love their logo. Don't know if I'd go out of my way to go back, but I'd be happy to get the chance to if in the area. read more

Awesome to have a winery right in OTR! This spacious venue is located a couple blocks north of Findlay market. I recommend to get here by car, there is street parking nearby. They've put a lot of thought into the furnishing and details to make it a welcoming and relaxing space. The staff is very friendly too. They serve wines by the glass or bottle. Along with wines, they also serve beer and small dishes. I had their cheese board, which had three local cheeses, pickled fiddlehead ferns, strawberry preserves, sundried tomato, and bread. They also allow you to bring food in. Highly recommend to stop by after work or on a weekend. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I prefer a full-bodied red wine and the wines they offer are a little light for my taste. But, would definitely go there again! My friend Tina and I stopped by Skeleton Root yesterday. The winery is in on the northern edge of Over the Rhine on McMicken street, you enter ifrom the street and walk up a flight of stairs to the cool open historical space. There's plenty of street parking right on McMicken. I enjoyed a white flight and she ordered a red flight so we could try a variety of their wines. I enjoyed the Rose and Northern Liberties white while my friend loved the Northern Liberties Red. Service was friendly, but she was only server in the space, at times we had to wait for the next pour in our flight. Love the Michael Wilson photo of vines over cool red leather couch in the space. They feature artwork from local artists and it changes on a monthly basis and all is for sale. I love Skeleton Root! I came here once for a Yelp event and now on a few rainy winter evenings with my partner, and I can't get enough. So freaking cozy. Small apartment dwellers: this space is your home-away-from-home. With cozy couches and long tables for working, it's kind of like my dream industrial-space living room. See also: dog-friendly patio! The wine is great; no silly fruity Ohio/Kentucky wines. Just solid, predominately dry wines made with both local and (thank god...) non-local grapes. The staff are all super knowledgable about their wines, and the glass prices are reasonable. We haven't tried any food yet, but soon! They have nice little charcuterie plates and other locally-made bites. The comments about the "bad" location are absolutely strange. This place is literally two blocks from Rhinegeist/Sartre and the streetcar, three blocks from Findlay Market, and right next-door to Schwartz's Point and Essen. Basically, Skeleton Root is literally *just* right off this main North-of-Liberty "drag," which means parking is easy and the vibes are chill. If you have a delicate constitution and have never seen a piece of trash on the ground or someone smoking outside their apartment on the street, I suppose don't come here :). read more

So this new winery has opened in OTR. Yes, it's a real winery. Not just a wine bar. Kate, the winemaker, is awesome and very passionate about the grapes that are used for the wines here. And oh my gosh, the wines, not the typical Ohio Valley sweet wines. The wines that Kate and her partner are making here are freaking fantastic. They source their wine grapes from local growers, as well as Washington state. And they do a great job creating here. My husband and I did a full flight to sample everything. After that we decided which varietal we wanted to drink. The Petite Sirah is fantastic. I also enjoyed the Chenin Blanc. Actually, we didn't taste a single wine that we didn't like and enjoy.
