I read all the hype about a smoke/vape shop that sells one of Vermont 's best burgers. I couldn't resist and ordered it thru Uber Eats for delivery. Ouch, I forget how much of an uncharted Uber adds to orders. They add $1-2 more per item, service fees and delivery fees depending on who you order from. So, my burger and fries that would cost $18-19 in person was almost $33 after delivery and tip. I ordered The Sizzler, half lb burger with bacon and cheese with a side of seasoned curly fries. The burger was overwhelming in size and tasted fresh. I had to save half for later. The fries tasted like they fried in old oil. Service is usually downright bad (a bunch of apparent employees appearing annoyed they have to look up from their phones to hand you an order) and oftentimes just rude (dismissive "I don't know" when asked about an order taking longer than a half hour). The excellent quality of ingredients would make up for this lackluster service....if the orders were consistently correct....or even consistently well-prepared. I freaking love this place. I only find myself in this neighborhood once or twice a year, and I always make a point to come to Shopping Bag. I always have my dog with me when I come on this particular trip, and I ordered her a plain hot dog with no bun and specified in the online order that it was for my dog so they would not put anything on it. They sent her own container with a special message for her, with her own hot dog all cut up, and some extra bacon to boot. How do you not love a place that is so AMAZING to a dog?!?! This place was a pleasant college-greasy-spoon surprise. The guys at the grill were gruff and efficient. The two burgers were made as requested with changes to the cheese and condiments handled correctly. Most of the customers seem to be neighborhood locals so if you're staying at a hotel during covid make sure to get any ketchup or utensils you may need. The hamburgers were large and very tasty. There were little neighboorhood kids like 8 feet away buying stuff like candy at the counter so I thought that was super uncool. You order at the main checkout counter and he enters your order into their computer system and it gets transferred across the room to the grill...that said, go to grill to look at menu and figure out what you want to order, then head to cashier counter behind you to give him your order and pay, then head back to the grill to get your grub. Easy. Nothing to it. Takes a bit of time to get your grub since it's made to order, but that ain't no thing. They do tenders, mozzarella sticks, hot dogs, wings, subs, fries, o rings...good prices and big servings! I'll come back, knowing full well in advance that I might see some people and hear some people I don't really want to. Strictly to go service here. Then - our first hint of how good the burgers were: the guys hard at work on the grill said it would be 15-20mins bc they were working on TEN burgers ahead of us. At 8pm on a Tuesday! So ok no problem, we wait, & watch people come in & out, picking up their orders and grabbing beer or other things from the liquor store. When our order came up, everything was blazing hot - especially those fries! Which are REALLY GOOD - lightly battered-crispy fries, perfectly very salty. The burgers felt like they weighed a couple pounds each & were so hefty, I couldn't bite the whole height of either one. The Sizzler was voted best burger in Vermont & it was DELISH. It tasted like a much better quality Big Mac. The Cowboy had a fat onion ring & bbq sauce & cheese. Yummy - but I liked the Sizzler better. Only after we ate half our (1/2 lb) burgers did we realize we could order a "mini" of any burger (1/4 lb each). So we have leftovers for tomorrow! The next time I came back here and tried to order the same thing I had ordered last time, they gave me a dark over-fried chicken patty, which made me sick. Not the chicken breast type sandwich from before. I gave them another chance and came back one more time and asked if I could get this type of chicken sandwich that I had ordered here previously, not the spongey circular chicken patty that they'd given me last time...and when I opened my sandwich after I left and it was another overcooked chicken patty. Everything about it different from the original sandwich I reviewed, even the oil they used on these last two smelled harsh, heavy, and extra greasy. The hype is real. This little grocery store has a grill inside where they cook up fast food, anything from hamburgers to chicken tenders to grilled cheese. But don't swipe left just yet - this isn't just any ole grill. The hamburgers and chicken sandwiches here are beyond delicious, probably one of the best in VT. The beef patties are thick and heavy and come stacked with a hefty dose of whatever toppings you pick. The chicken sandwiches are made grilled or crispy - with an option for spicy. No matter what you order, it'll be extremely filling.. and cheap. I think these huge burgers only ran me about $7. So why'd I knock off a star? The service - or rather the lack of. There's no reliable system in place to get the food to you. The food's made at the grill, your name is called once (and you better pray you're there to hear it), and if you don't scream back in acknowledgement, your food will be put on a rack which is behind the counter and out of sight. When you do arrive or realize you missed your name-call, you'll have to go around back to the grill and tap the grill-master on his shoulder - potentially throwing off his grilling mojo - and ask for your goods. IMO, I found this system to be amusing and got some laughs out of it but for you hangry people in a hurry, it may be... yeah. read more

3.75 stars. So it does kinda suck that you can't eat at this place but don't let that or all the incredibly ridiculous comments about the clientele keep you from having a burger here. It's definitely well above standard and worth your time. It's true that at least one of the guys that works here isn't exactly the paragon of customer service. But whatever. If you can get over that, then you can focus your time on a good burger. I will say this. Skip the Cajun fries. It takes too long to find a spot to eat the burger so they will get cold. And cold fries generally suck. So for all those people who got to enjoy great fries, congrats. Don't take the risk. My fries totally sucked and it had everything to do with temperature. The burger was good even after a 23 minute wait between purchase and actual consumption. While I wasn't a fan of the well done meat, the meat itself was clearly fresh, and the toppings were rather divine. Also, this burger was huge. Was it the best burger I have eaten? Brother please. I'm from the Deep South. But was it something that could easily hold up in the South? Yes. This was a damn good burger. While I am admittedly curious about the Heady Topper cheese on one of their burgers, the Sizzler was definitely tasty. Whether you decide to be basic or fancy, Shopping Bag is a good choice for a solid all-American meal in Burlington. I give The Shopping Bag 5 stars for ambience, surprising me and for really awesome burgers. The Shopping Bag is a little "general store"-type place in the Old North End of Burlington. It's sort of the seedier part of town. Depending on where in the Old North End you're at, it's also the hipper part of town. The Shopping Bag on the inside looks like it was established in the 1950s and then never really changed or cleaned much. It's a place you would think most people stop in to get beer and ciggies and maybe a bag of chips. However, it's so much more than that. There is a deli in the back and to the right, just as you walk in (almost invisible of you're not looking for it or aware of its existence) is a section with chalkboard menus hanging over it where they make the burgers and assorted other sandwiches. Given the environs, your first inclination would probably be to not order any food made there. Pay no attention to your first inclination. The burgers are wonderful. Be aware that all burgers are 1/2 pound of meat unless you specify you want 1/4 pound (there was so much burger I ate half of mine for dinner and the rest for breakfast and lunch). Also be aware that you can't order your food at the food counter. You must first approach the cash register at the opposite side of the store front and order there, pay and then head over to pick up your food. The guy behind the food counter was sweet. He could tell I was a complete newbie. He asked me how I wanted my patty cooked, I said medium (I prefer medium rare, but when in doubt I go for more cooked than not). I had ordered the Sizzler, a burger with bacon, provolone, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions (I asked for no onions), catsup, mustard and mayo. It has one state awards as best burger in Vermont. It's very very good. Mine came out medium rare which I was happy about but not everyone might be. Maybe the guy behind the counter is psychic. Maybe not. The icing on the cake was the fact that located just in front of the burger making area, is an ice cream cooler and they had Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup ice cream. Especially meaningful because my boyfriend who has some bug of flu, had eaten straight from my B&J Peanut Butter Cup ice cream pint the day before and then put it back in the freezer. Since that pint was contaminated I had thrown it away and was still complaining about it. Can you say "Oh serendipitous day"? I probably won't go back to the Shopping Cart for a while because last night I ate so much burger and ice cream that I will probably avoid both for at least a few weeks. But the next time I have a burger craving, which I often do, you can be sure that is where I will go. I also like Blue Bird Tavern burgers but that's more of an expensive sit down meal that's not ideal for take out. I used to sometimes go to Five Guys but they screwed up my orders so many times (don't put onions on my burgers unless you want me to have a silent melt down) that I've vowed never to return :) read more
