My love and I were looking for a bite and a brew on a Saturday evening, so we wound up at The Sedgwick Stop, named appropriately as it's about a block away from the Brown Line Sedgwick station. It was not very busy when we were there, but apparently the place was packed for Tennessee Volunteers football game earlier that day. My burger and steak fries were good but not great. My love ordered a platter of three tacos and she said they were a bit spicy for her palate. I tried one and the taco was okay. Might be better off to stick with the drinks here. read more

This was definitely a dive bar. We came on a Tennessee alum night so it was pretty bumpin! Looking back I wish we had just gone for drinks. Beer was cold and service behind the bar was good. They didn't really have waiters to attend to tables so everything was behind the bar. I got some chicken tenders and I wasn't a huge fan. They were sort of tough and not very flavorful. My boyfriend's burger was better. It was just your classic, old Chicago dive bar which is just what you need sometimes! I think when the weather is nicer the place will be better with the outdoor area opened up. The music was a little too loud and it was hard to talk over it. The Sedgwick Stop is an Old Town gem that has yet to be plagued by all the Alderman-induced hogwash that has claimed the lives of numerous of other hotspots in the area. Trigger Warning open mic comedy is fantastic and is every Monday night at 10:30. My wife and I have been here numerous times and have a blast every time! I've always noticed this place when hopping on the brown line at Sedwick, and jumped on the opportunity to check it out when I noticed a Groupon deal. Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon for a snack, and it was pretty mellow and laid back. Our server was super friendly and had recommended the pork belly poutine to share between my friend and I. I'm still drooling over remember how tender and juicy the pork belly was. Instead of using traditional fries they used potato wedges which was also a nice touch. I've come to the Sedgwick Stop for a drink twice in the last few years, and enjoyed both of my visits here quite a bit! Most recently, I was inspired to come by on a sunny, 70-degree Sunday. I'd never experienced the Stop's patio, and figured this would be the best opportunity to do so. My boyfriend and I walked over after exploring the neighborhood a little, and were pleasantly surprised to see the patio was pretty empty around 3:15pm. We also noticed quite a few dogs on the patio, too. Woo! We walked through the front door and the bartender let us know that we could place our drink and food orders with him. Any food would be brought out to us since it'd take a few minutes to make. We each grabbed a beer and put in an order of wings, and kept our tab open while we found a table outside. Like I said, there were plenty of dogs, both passing by and on the actual patio, and a lot of open seats. We easily found a table and enjoyed the sunshine and our pints, and within a few minutes our wings were brought to us with a handful of napkins. My foodie friend and I decided to visit Chicago and explore the food scene. I stumbled upon a Groupon for this place and the menu instantly called our attention. Great flight selection. You can choose from beer, wine or whiskey. The beer flights are a great deal considering the quantity you get. The food was phenomenal! Their shrimp and grits was one of the most amazing things we've ever tried! Creamy, chest grits with Gouda cheese, tired with sauteed onions, mushrooms, shrimp and bacon. It was to die for! The hangover poutine with pork belly and scallions was a terrific appetizer and their tomato soup was delicious and creamy. The food was okay, but the experience was marred by the poor service. We arrived for lunch on Sunday- there were a couple customers at the bar while a group of women behind us finished paying, so there were really only a few tables our server had to tend to. After not bringing over enough menus, he then made a remark along the lines of "What, you thought I l left you out because you're black?, which was incredibly out of line. Past that, it took ten minutes for him to take our order, and another thirty for us to get one appetizer. One couple came in, and after waiting for fifteen minutes for anyone to come over and at least say hello, left. On to the food- the smoked gouda mac and cheese was really good, and my BBQ bacon burger was okay. The tempura fried bacon was disappointing, especially because the deep fried batter took away from the taste of the bacon, but it was a well cooked burger. At the end of the meal when we asked for separate checks, our server was visibly irritated by it- that's the first time that's ever happened to me in any restaurant. I probably won't come back unless I'm in the neighborhood, and even then, I'll think twice before I say yes. read more

Let me start out with I USED to love this place (management are you READING this??) I've been here around 10 times over the past 6 months. The beer selection was great and the food was outstanding. Service has always been a bit of an issue (they don't deal with busy times well). I was here for a couple of world cup games and the service definitely suffered. That said the food was so good I got over it. Fast forward to today....our food was a very simple order, two orders of chicken fingers and an order of fries. First off the food took an eternity. I seriously finished two beers in the time it took to cook our food. Dude are you killing the chicken back there??? To top it off they were NOT busy. There was ONE other table in the entire place. When the food arrived I was HORRIBLY dissapointed. Mind you I've eaten this exact thing before so I was expecting what I had received all of the other times I'd ordered this, 5 good sized, juicy, spicy chicken fingers. Not so much. What arrives is three tiny chicken fingers on a plate(for $8 no less, sides are extra people), and our "side" order of fries was about the same as a Mcdonald's child size order of fries on a tiny plate. Is there a potato shortage I haven't read about? Aside from the tiny portions the chicken fingers were way overcooked. So dry you had to drowned them in ranch to choke them down, and the ends were hard like they were either freezer burned or had been refried. Staff said the old chef left, I'd met him as when it was slower he'd walk around and see how everything was. This new guy walked by us about 5 times and never said boo even though it was totally dead. He must not have wanted to hear that he doesn't even know how to fry a chicken finger. Hell I can do that. I'd love to know where the old chef went to work so I can eat there. I certainly won't be back here. There are way better places in the hood to spend my money. This place has a really nice casual and comfortable vibe to it. Brought a friend to use a groupon here for a beer, wine, or whiskey flight and appetizer. Because it's only for 1 flight and a shared app, I'm not sure why the groupon requires two people, and it's awkward to share a flight of anything, but that was really my only complaint. My friend and I weren't in the mood to drink much anyway, so the red wine flight providing four tastings, giving us 2 tastings each worked out. The wines weren't my favorite, but I'm no connoisseur and drank them anyway. For our app, we ordered the mushroom and goat cheese quesadilla and were told it was small, so we ordered the plain chicken tenders as well. The quesadilla was quite flavorful and goat cheesy, which I love, and the chicken tenders were crisp and well-seasoned. This place has a great atmosphere and beer and selection. The owners and bartenders are very friendly (even if one of them is a Raiders fan - sad), which helps with the neighborhood bar vibe. I live in the old town neighborhood and have many different choices, but this one is one of my favs. Good music and sports viewing as well. On the plus side, the food is quite good. I ordered chicken wings with a side of onion rings, and both lived up to my expectations. The buffalo wings were just the right level of spicy, and there were enough onion rings for them to be its own meal. The location is also quite convenient, just a one-minute walk from the Sedgwick L stop. However, the quality of service leaves a lot to be desired. We waited for nearly an hour for our food, even though it was middle of the day on Saturday, and it wasn't anywhere close to crowded. It looked like there was only one guy manning the bar and taking food orders, so maybe that's why. It got so bad we asked for our check as soon as he finally brought out the food, since we were afraid we would be waiting another 30 minutes just to pay. My girlfriend and I went here after she got the Groupon for whiskey flights and food. It was great. The service was wonderful, I got to try some new bourbon, she tried some new beers. Our server was knowledgeable and helped us order some food to complement the drinks. We started with the pulled pork nachos to maximize the value from the Groupon. They were excellent. GET THE MEATLOAF. It was a meatloaf cupcake that we split. It had some green beans and mashed potatoes that I can't say enough good things about. Oh boy. This was my neighborhood bar for a while, and new ownership and management recently gutted the beer menu and straight up ruined a decent food selection. I would no longer suggest it, even if it was my hangout. Nachos are worse than what you get at movie theaters, beer was flat and despite being "craft " tasted like Miller. Things were served in paper boats, which leads me to think new ownership is so cheap they refuse to hire a dishwasher. Its sad to see new management mess up something that was good and simple. It's really unfortunate to visit a bar and your neighborhood and be treated so poorly. We met friends that had a table and had already ordered drinks. We ordered at the bar since our waitress didn't say anything to us for over 10 minutes. Anytime that we asked for anything we were met with such hostility and overall rudeness. When it came to get the check it only got worse. We waited at the bar for over 15 minutes and we're completely passed everytime. When I asked another waitress for our check she rudely grabbed it and slammed it down. As my guy was paying she clearly called us assholes. I've never experienced such hostility for no real reason. If she had wanted our direct service she should have gotten to us quicker especially since it wasn't that busy when we arrived. I gave 2 stars because the overall bar and place seem great. I'd love to give the stop another chance but it may be hard to look past this experience. read more

This spot oozes everything you hope for in a good neighborhood hole-in-the-wall type of spot. Good tap selection, price is right, and a slew of weeknight specials that keep the people coming in. Unfortunately one of the big draws, as I've interpreted, are the wings - and they just aren't so good. Attempt one was a dozen wings - the Asian Zing sauce was awesome, a good blend of flavors, the catch - wings were undercooked, like chewy with a dash of slime. The two other folks I dined with fell victim to the same chicken wing a la medium rare delivery. I sought redemption with a grilled cheese and tomato soup combo. Again we struck gold with the flavors in the tomato soup, but the grilled cheese was hardly melted and just cold in the middle. Would I come back for a couple Thursday IPAs, yes.
